We're back! After a few weeks off, we've returned to review the latest in the MCU: Captain Marvel.
Brie Larson (Short Term 12) and Samuel L. Jackson (Snakes on a Plane) headline a 1990s-set buddy-cop picture for Marvel Studios to introduce one of the most powerful superheroes in the MCU - Captain Marvel. The 21st entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the first female-centered Marvel Studios release and is is heavy on mid-1990s music cues, pagers, CD-roms, and slightly awkward computer-aided reverse aging technology.

This week we’re rocking out 90’s style, heading to far off fantasy lands like Blockbuster Video, and kicking some butt, all while discussing the latest entry to the MCU ‘Captain Marvel’. Captain Marvel is a 2019 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Carol Danvers. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the twenty-first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet also contributing to the screenplay. Brie Larson stars as Danvers, alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law. Set in 1995, the story follows Danvers as she becomes Captain Marvel after Earth is caught in the center of a galactic conflict between two alien worlds. Aaron and David review the 21st film in the MCU: Captain Marvel.
We're back for another spoiler free review as we look at the first big blockbuster of 2019 with the latest entry in the MCU Captain Marvel. Why is this movie just not that good? Is the criticism of it fair? Does Brie Larson give the most bland superhero performance we've ever seen? Does this make us appreciate Black Panther a lot more? Is it just a little too preachy in parts or does it send the message it's trying to send? Was this film rushed out too quickly? Why did Colin fall asleep in this movie? Is the cat the star of the film? Does the de-ageing look too bad in this film to appreciate? Who is good and who is bad in this film? Does the music work or is it too over the top? Is it trying to hard to be Guardians of the Galaxy? And can we walk out of this with anything positive to say? It's an interesting one that we are sure you'll be interested in so get to listening!★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
It's a special BONUS episode as The Retrograders recap the 21st entry into the MCU--Captain Marvel! Was this last-minute entry before the much anticipated Avengers: Endgame a worthy member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or does its photon blast burn up upon entry into our atmosphere? Fans of Marvel Comics MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) have been waiting for this Captain Marvel movie ever since the end credits of Avengers: Infinity War. When Nick Fury pulled out that paging device that displayed Captain Marvel's symbol the internet went crazy with fan theories. Fan theories and speculation are what helps ease the anticipation until the next movie, so that is not a bad thing. There was a lot of hype building up to Captain Marvel. The MCU had been taking heat for it's lack of screen time for it's female characters. DC proved there is enough demand for a strong female lead character when Wonder Woman did so well at the box office. Some backlash about Brie Larson's comments caused a huge online down-vote campaign against the movie. The audience rating on Rotten Tomato and the User rating on IMDB were both very low before the movie had even aired at one theater. Thankfully the movie going audience actually showed up to watch the highly anticipated film. Captain Marvel pulled in $20.7M on Thursday preview night, $62M Friday and is on pace for a $160M opening weekend. That is good enough to put it third for the month of March after Beauty and the Beast ($174.7M) and Batman v. Superman ($166M). Patrick and I really enjoyed Captain Marvel. There are lots of little references and cameos sprinkled throughout the movie. The most heartfelt is what is likely the last time Stan Lee will make his famous cameo. There is also a very touching homage to Stan Lee at the beginning of the movie. It is a nice gesture to thank the man who was without question the ambassador for comic books, regardless of the publisher. You don't need to take our word for how good the movie is. We asked members of the audience their thoughts on Captain Marvel. Everyone we talked to both on and off camera gave praise to the newest entry into the MCU. We are predicting a surge in Captain Marvel costumes at comic cons and especially during Halloween this year! If you haven't seen Captain Marvel yet, we highly recommend it. If you have watched it, let us know what your favorite part of the movie is in the comments.
