The Superhero Show #626Fantastic Four: Super SkrullThe Superhero Show — Super SkrullThis week, The Superhero Show continues its coverage of the 1994 Fantastic Four animated series with Episode 1.07, “Super Skrull.” After the events of the previous Skrull storyline, the hosts dive into the arrival of one of the Fantastic Four's most iconic comic book enemies: Super Skrull. The episode brings back the shape-shifting alien threat with an upgraded weapon—a warrior capable of wielding all four of the Fantastic Four's powers at once. The hosts discuss the episode's plot, its connection to the missing Skrull episode that disappeared from modern streaming services, and whether Super Skrull lives up to his reputation as one of Marvel's most dangerous villains. As always, the conversation balances genuine comic book analysis with plenty of laughs at the wonderfully strange storytelling choices that only a 1990s superhero cartoon could deliver.Super Skrull: The Recap Disney+ Doesn't Want You to SeeThe hosts begin by discussing one of the episode's most unusual features: its lengthy recap of the previous Skrull storyline.Because the earlier Skrull episode has largely been absent from Disney+, modern viewers are put in the strange position of watching a recap for an episode they may never have actually seen. The hosts talk about how bizarre this experience is and how the recap almost feels like a hidden glimpse into a lost chapter of the series. This leads to a broader discussion about continuity in older cartoons and how streaming-era audiences sometimes encounter these shows very differently than their original viewers did.Super Skrull: All Four Powers in One VillainThe centerpiece of the episode is, of course, the introduction of Super Skrull himself. The hosts break down how the character is adapted from the comics and why the basic concept remains so effective. By combining the abilities of Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing into a single opponent, the episode instantly creates a threat that feels uniquely suited to challenge the entire team. They discuss how each power is utilized throughout the episode, which abilities translate best to animation, and whether the cartoon fully takes advantage of the character's incredible potential. The consensus? Even when the animation struggles to keep up with the concept, Super Skrull remains a fantastic comic-book idea.Super Skrull: Powered by the Skrull HomeworldOne of the more memorable aspects of the episode is the explanation for where Super Skrull's abilities come from. The hosts discuss the decision to have his powers amplified and maintained through energy transmitted from the Skrull homeworld. This creates a built-in weakness for the character while also reinforcing the larger scale of the Skrull Empire's involvement in the conflict.Naturally, the hosts have some fun poking at the comic-book logic involved, but they also acknowledge that it gives the story a clear objective beyond simply punching the villain until he stops moving.Super Skrull: Outsmarting the Ultimate EnemyAs the episode builds toward its conclusion, the Fantastic Four realize they cannot simply overpower an opponent who possesses all of their abilities. The hosts discuss how the team ultimately defeats Super Skrull through strategy and teamwork rather than brute force. This becomes one of the stronger elements of the episode, emphasizing the idea that what makes the Fantastic Four special is not their powers individually but how they work together as a family. The discussion also touches on whether the resolution feels earned and how it compares to other major villain defeats throughout the first season.Comic Book Weirdness at Its FinestThroughout the episode, the hosts repeatedly come back to what makes Super Skrull such an enjoyable piece of Marvel history. The character embodies everything great about Silver Age comic books: a simple premise, outrageous powers, and enough comic-book logic to create endless entertaining situations.Even when the episode struggles with pacing or storytelling, the sheer fun of watching the Fantastic Four face a villain who can do everything they can do keeps the hosts engaged.Final Thoughts — Super SkrullBy the end of Super Skrull, The Superhero Show finds itself discussing one of the strongest villain concepts the 1994 Fantastic Four series has introduced so far. Between the strange recap of a missing episode, the arrival of one of Marvel's most recognizable alien antagonists, and the creative challenge of facing a foe with all four Fantastic Four powers, the episode delivers exactly the kind of comic-book absurdity that makes this series so entertaining to revisit.Whether you're a longtime fan of the character or meeting him for the first time, Super Skrull proves why the Fantastic Four's rogues gallery remains one of Marvel's most imaginative. Are You a Research Nerd Who's Looking For More? Here are some links for all your research wants and needs!1994 Fantastic Four Animated SeriesRyan North's Fantastic FourJoin the discussions online! 1994 Fantastic Four Animated Series, Ryan North's Fantastic FourCatch Up On Past Episodes!Missed any of our past episodes? It's Marvel Monday and meet Marvel's most powerful hero! ABOUT CAPTAIN MARVEL Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR CAPTAIN MARVEL March 8, 2019 | Theatrical Release CAST & CREW OF CAPTAIN MARVEL Directors: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck Writers: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, Geneva Robertson-Dworet Cast: Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury BRAN'S MOVIE SYNOPSIS Carol Danvers is living her best amnesia life on the Kree homeworld of Hala under the name Vers. Got it? Good. She's got superpowers, cool space suits, and a mentor named Yon-Rogg who constantly tells her to stop feeling. The Kree government, which is basically run by a giant AI lady, insists that the evil shape-shifting Skrulls ruined her life and since Carol remembers absolutely nothing, so she just rolls with it. While on a mission to rescue a Kree spy, things immediately go sideways. The Skrulls capture Carol and start digging around in her memories, discovering that she used to be an Air Force pilot on Earth. Their leader Talos becomes very interested in a scientist named Dr. Wendy Lawson and a mysterious light-speed engine. Carol escapes before they get all the answers and crash-lands straight into a Blockbuster Video in 1995 Los Angeles. Her arrival gets the attention of a young Nick Fury, who still has two working eyes and spends most of this movie being confused. After a series of chases, explosions, and Skrulls impersonating anyone they want, Carol starts uncovering pieces of her past. She learns that she wasn't born on Hala at all—she was an Air Force pilot presumed dead after a crash years earlier. As Carol & Nick follow the breadcrumbs, she reconnects with her old friend Maria and Maria's daughter Monica, who are understandably shocked to discover their dead friend is actually a space superhero. Meanwhile, Talos finally reveals that the Skrulls aren't conquering villains at all—they're refugees looking for a home. Turns out the Kree may not have been entirely honest. The biggest bombshell comes when Carol remembers what really happened. Dr. Lawson was actually Mar-Vell, a Kree scientist secretly helping the Skrulls. Shes killed while taking control of an experimental energy source. Carol destroyed the engine to keep it from the Kree, absorbed its energy in the explosion, gained incredible powers, and then had her memories erased so the Kree could turn her into a weapon. The gang tracks down Mar-Vell's hidden space laboratory, where a bunch of Skrull refugees have been hiding. Unfortunately, Starforce shows up, the Kree try to reassert control, and Carol gets dragged before the Supreme Intelligence. She destroys the device limiting her powers and finally goes full Captain Marvel. What follows is a one-sided beatdown thanks to Captain marvel. With the Skrulls safe for the moment, Carol decides to head off into space to help them find a permanent home. Before leaving, she gives Fury a special pager for emergencies. Fury later loses his eye in an incident involving Goose - a cat who is actually an alien who is also holding the Tesseract in its tummy. Looking at Carol's old Air Force call sign, he lands on the perfect name: The Avengers Initiative. In the mid-credits scene, the pager goes off and Carol returns to Earth Watch the show on Youtube - www.deckthehallmark.com/youtubeInterested in advertising on the show? The Superhero Show #625Fantastic Four: Disney's Secret EpisodeThe Superhero Show — Disney's Secret EpisodeThis week, The Superhero Show tackles one of the most curious entries in the 1994 Fantastic Four animated series: “Incursion of the Skrulls,” better known among fans as Disney's Secret Episode. While the episode was once available alongside the rest of the series, it later disappeared from streaming platforms due to imagery that became unexpectedly sensitive following real-world events. The hosts discuss the episode's unusual history, its place within the series, and whether its reputation as the “missing episode” is more interesting than the episode itself.Along the way, they dive into shape-shifting aliens, increasingly absurd infiltration plans, and one of the strangest examples of Reed Richards being rewarded for... well, pretty much everything. In the second half of the show, the hosts continue their read-through of Ryan North's Fantastic Four with Issue #6, “A Shot in the Dark,” a story that showcases just how powerful Sue Storm really is—and why that realization starts making certain organizations very nervous.Disney's Secret Episode: The Skrulls Have ArrivedThe hosts begin with a breakdown of “Incursion of the Skrulls,” introducing the Fantastic Four's first encounter with Marvel's famous shape-shifting alien empire. They discuss how the episode portrays the Skrulls, from their constant scheming and internal rivalries to their often questionable decision-making. The conversation highlights how the cartoon leans heavily into the comedic side of the Skrulls while still presenting them as a genuine threat. The hosts especially enjoy examining the relationships between the various Skrull characters, whose constant bickering and incompetence frequently undermine their own invasion plans.Disney's Secret Episode: The Most Complicated Impersonation Plan EverOne of the biggest talking points of the episode is the wonderfully ridiculous central plot. After learning that the Skrulls plan to impersonate the Fantastic Four on Earth, the Fantastic Four decide to impersonate the Skrulls who are planning to impersonate them. The resulting layers of deception create a level of comic-book logic that the hosts find impossible not to love. They break down the increasingly convoluted disguises, mistaken identities, and absurd scenarios that emerge from this setup, arguing that it perfectly captures both the strengths and weaknesses of the 1994 series. It's silly, overcomplicated, and somehow incredibly entertaining.Disney's Secret Episode: Reed Richards, Hero of Literally EveryoneThe hosts also spend time discussing one of the episode's most amusing developments: Reed Richards somehow earning an astonishing amount of praise and recognition from the Skrulls.Whether through diplomacy, science, luck, or sheer protagonist energy, Reed repeatedly finds himself being celebrated by people who should technically be his enemies. The hosts joke about Reed's ability to stumble into honorary titles, medals, and accolades regardless of which planet he's standing on.This becomes a larger conversation about how the animated series often portrays Reed as the smartest and most respected person in every room—and occasionally every galaxy. The Episode That Quietly DisappearedNo discussion of Disney's Secret Episode would be complete without addressing its unusual streaming history.Without focusing too heavily on the specifics, the hosts discuss how certain scenes involving a recognizable New York skyline became far more sensitive after major historical events. As a result, the episode has largely remained absent from some modern streaming releases despite being a regular part of the original series. The conversation explores how older media can sometimes gain unexpected context years later and how that can affect preservation, distribution, and audience perception.Ryan North's Fantastic Four #6: A Shot in the DarkIn the second half of the episode, the hosts turn their attention to Ryan North's Fantastic Four #6, “A Shot in the Dark.”The issue follows the team as they attempt to stop a rapidly spreading algae that threatens to consume and destroy life on Earth. To prevent catastrophe, Sue Storm takes on an extraordinary responsibility: traveling into space and using her powers to reduce the sunlight reaching Earth long enough to stop the algae from growing. The hosts praise the issue for highlighting just how powerful Sue truly is. While Reed often receives the spotlight as the team's scientific genius, this story demonstrates that Sue may actually be one of the most formidable members of the Marvel Universe. The discussion becomes particularly interesting when Maria Hill and S.H.I.E.L.D. confront the team at the end of the issue. Realizing the full scale of Sue's abilities for perhaps the first time, they decide that someone capable of affecting the entire planet deserves much closer scrutiny. The hosts explore the fascinating ethical questions raised by the issue: What happens when a superhero becomes powerful enough to alter global systems? And who, if anyone, should be responsible for monitoring that power?Final Thoughts — Disney's Secret EpisodeBy the end of Disney's Secret Episode, The Superhero Show finds itself discussing one of the strangest chapters in Fantastic Four history. Between shape-shifting alien hijinks, increasingly ridiculous layers of impersonation, Reed Richards collecting yet another set of honors, and the episode's unusual streaming legacy, “Incursion of the Skrulls” proves to be far more memorable than anyone might expect.Combined with Ryan North's thoughtful exploration of Sue Storm's incredible power in Fantastic Four #6, the episode offers listeners a perfect blend of comic-book absurdity, historical curiosity, and superhero analysis as the hosts continue their exploration of Marvel's first family. The Marvel Cosmic has been thrown into upheaval following the events of the "Imperial" mini-series and its tie-ins. Major players such as Black Panther, the Hulk, Nova, and Star-Lord have been manipulated by some other major players in a war that threatens to change empires across the cosmos. We'll give our review and see what's coming next. Jay and Josh play a strategic game of Sharrat on Superhero Suite.
In an episode where they've never needed his bullshit X-Men knowledge more, Zammit's out sick. But never fear true believer as he's been replaced by our good friend Darcy Smith from Studio Folly! Who knows NOTHING about X-Men. He didn't even know Wolverine aka Logan aka James Howlett bones were coated in adamantium. You all better come for him in the comments. They didn't even mention the time after Wolverine got the adamantium ripped from his bones where he turned into a full on cave man, wore a bandana and had no nose. Nor do the mention the time of how he got his adamantium back. You see, at the time, and unbeknownst to the rest of the X-Men, Apocalypse had kidnapped (man-napped? mutant-napped?) Wolverine and pitted him up against Sabretooth (who had been enhanced with adamantium from the arms of the evil mutant Cyber (he had arms coated in adamantium)) to see who would become Death (one of the Horsemen of Apocalypse). Wolverine defeated Sabretooth believing that only bad would come out of Sabretooth becoming Death and so Apocalypse sucked off the adamantium from Sabretooth to give to Wolverine. Even his teeth were adamantium at this point, but that didn't last. He was then made to attack the X-Men and he was all wrapped up in a red headscarf thing and wielded a big scimitar for reasons that are unclear. Probably to hide the fact that no one was supposed to know he was Wolverine as there was another Wolverine on the team, but not like his clone or his son or his clone of a clone, this one was a Skrull (one of those shapeshifting aliens) who was pretending to be Wolverine for some reason that escapes me. Did Apocalypse put him on the team or was that just a sweet coincidence? This was during Apocalypse: The Twelve storyline, which was something that was teased for so long in the comics but ended up being just a terrible mess where Apocalypse wanted to get sucked off into the body of Nate Grey (an alternate reality and all powerful son of Jean Grey and Scott Summers who was kicking it sweet in the 616 universe who later went on to become a mutant shaman, then become a bit of everyone, then he made an alternate reality where sex was forbidden which makes sense as he was tricked by an evil Madelyne Pryor from a different alternate dimension to have sex, which is weird as Madelyne is a clone of Jean Grey, his mum) but Scott Summers pushed him out the way and took his spot, so Apocalypse ended up sucking off Cyclops and then they merged into one guy and then choofed off for a bit to finally come back to cheat on his wife. So you guys better come for them in the comments. Didn't even know their plane was called the Blackbird. At Terrificon, I moderated an unforgettable panel with four generations of Fantastic Four voices — Humberto Ramos, Walter Simonson, Steve Englehart, Chris Claremont, and C.B. Cebulski.Humberto Ramos, now illustrating Marvel's current Fantastic Four with writer Ryan North, shared how he's balancing the Kirby legacy with his energetic, modern style. He spoke about designing new adventures while keeping the Richards family's emotional core intact.Walter Simonson reflected on his late '80s run, when he boldly reshaped Reed Richards, experimented with the lineup, and injected the series with the same cosmic energy that defined his acclaimed Thor.Steve Englehart recalled his 1980s stories full of Skrull intrigue, soap-opera tension, and attempts to modernize the FF amid Marvel's editorial shifts.Chris Claremont, best known for X-Men, discussed his early 2000s tenure exploring Sue Richards' evolution as leader and giving fresh dimension to Ben Grimm's humanity.C.B. Cebulski, Marvel's Editor-in-Chief, rounded out the conversation by talking about the FF's place in Marvel's publishing future and the responsibility of shepherding “The World's Greatest Comic Magazine” in today's marketplace.Together, the panel offered candid stories, behind-the-scenes context, and a sweeping look at how the Fantastic Four has endured — and evolved — across decades of creators.
Welcome Back to Make Mine Multiverse City: A Marvel Podcast! Each episode we'll be looking at Marvel books, old and new! We discuss fun Marvel comics, Marvel news, Marvel history and, now, are putting the "mine" back into Make Mine Multiverse City. Make Mine Multiversity was a twice-monthly podcast that premiered on the first and third Friday of every month. Now we're shooting for monthly every fourth Friday. How's that for calling my shot? We've got a new format to go with the new schedule! Each month, Elias will be talking with a guest about a Marvel comic that's memorable to them. Sometimes this will be personally meaningful, sometimes it'll be "I read this a few months ago and it's still sticking around." I'm excited to see where it leads. This month, we're welcoming my good friend and former Chief Manager at Large (don't call him EIC) of Multiversity Comics, Brian Salvatore, to the podcast to read "Fantastic Four" #347-349, published in late 1990. It's the one about the skrulls. And the mole man. You know the one. Oh, and I think The Punisher shows up?I should also mention we totally beefed it while talking about legacy characters. How could we have left off Miles Morales?! He's the example of a legacy character with staying power (kinda. Sorta. 616 monkey-wrenches the whole thing.) In our defense...okay, there's no good defense besides "whoopsie."Next time, a couple familiar voices join us as we tie-in with "One World Under Doom" and talk "Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment." Reading along with us? You've got options! The best one is "Doctor Strange" Epic Collection, Vol. 8: Triumph and Torment.Elias can be found writing here at eliasrwrites.ghost.io. Brian can be found on Bluesky @brianneedsanap.bsky.social or hosting a podcast on the Distinguished Competition, TheDC3Cast. Our theme music is “Excelsior” by Carol Romo and our audio editor is me, Elias. If the episode is too quiet, blame him.The show is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, (Stitcher is apparently dead and buried) and other places so please subscribe!

Episode 75 - Murdock and Marvel: 2008 Part 2 2008 in the United States was a year of war and recession, leading to a bleak short-term outlook for Americans. Comics and comic book movies reflected that, but also gave fans a lot to enjoy, hopefully taking people's minds off social and economic issues they were facing. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2008. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #102-#112, Daredevil: Blood of the Tarantula #1, Avengers #36-37 and 39, World War Hulk: Aftersmash #1, Civil War Chronicles #5-6 and 8-12, What if? Civil War #1, Exiles #1, World War Hulk Aftersmash: Damage Control #1-3, Black Panther Annual #1, New Exiles #0, Ultimate Fantastic Four #52-53, Might Avengers #12 and 16, King Size Hulk #1, Eternals #1, New Avengers #42, Ultimate Origins #3, Wolverine #68, Age of Sentry #2, Secret Invasion #7, Secret Invasion: The Amazing Spider-Man #3, and Thunderbolts #125 Writing: Ed Brubaker (#102-106, 111-112) Brubaker and Greg Rucka (#107-110) Pencils: Michael Lark (#102-103, 107-112), Lark and Azaceta (#104-105), Paul Azaceta (#106), Clay Mann (#111) Inks: Stefano Gaudiano (#102, #105, #107-112) Gaudiano and Paul Azaceta (#103), Gaudiano and Tom Palmer (#104), Paul Azaceta (#106) The year begins with the parts 3 through 6 of the Without Fear storyline we talked about in 2007. Daredevil takes down Mr Fear but not before Matt Murdock and Milla Donvan's life is turned upside down. In May, we get a single story “Sympathy for the Devil” that bridges us to the next big story arch. In it we see Matt Murdock struggling to deal with everything that's happened to him and Milla. This interesting story will be our spotlight story for the year. Next, we get the 4-part “Cruel and Unusual” story arch in which Matt Murdock tries to help a death row inmate “Big Ben” Donovan who's unwilling to get help to stay his execution. Murdock can tell there's more going on here and Dakota North being assaulted, warned away from investigating Big Ben case by her father Samuel North and finally shot all seem to confirm that suspicion. After Dakota is shot, Matt decides to investigate the shooter and, after following the clues, realizes that there had been men watching his law office from the beginning. These men turn out to be federal agents, who explain why Donovan was framed. Apparently, the special units needed crime boss Eric Slaughter to watch over the docks, which is why they protected him. In the end, Matt speaks with Samuel J. North. North tells him how the special units crossed the line, that he didn't want his daughter caught in the crossfire, that they needed someone to blame, and Donovan fit the profile. Interestingly, this story was billed as a 5-part story that ended after 4. To finish out 2008, we get the return of Bullseye, well kind of. In a story titled “Lady Bullseye”, we see the Hand and their newest assassin – a woman who goes by the alias Lady Bullseye and was inspired by the original Bullseye who tore through the Yakuzi years before. Lady Bullseye frames Murdock for murder to keep him occupied (though he's arrested the morning after cheating on his wife Milla with Dakota North) while they go after Iron Fist (Danny Rand) and Black Tarantula (Carlos LaMuerto). North provides an alibi for Murdock so he gets released and upon returning home and upon returning home they find Black Tarantula hogtied and an old man rummaging through Matt's kitchen, who introduces himself as Master Izo and says Matt is going to help him destroy the Hand. Apparently now is an opportune time as the Hand is in chaos as factions are fighting for control after Elektra is revealed to be a Skrull. As the story progressed, we see that the Hand has a series of targets and eventually possesses Tarantula and White Tiger before a finally confrontation with Daredevil. It's then that Lady Bullseye reveals to Matt her true plan—she wants him to lead the Hand, and her efforts so far have not been to attack his friends and family, but rather to remove them as obstacles. Stunned, Matt strikes her. They fight again and she knocks him out, saying the Hand does not take no for an answer. Master Izo helps Matt up, and assumes he refused the Hand's offer; Matt says nothing. The story ends with Lord Hirochi, Lady Bullseye, Black Tarantula, and White Tiger board a plane to Spain, where Lady Bullseye says they will pursue Plan B. One side story in the Lady Bullseye story arch, is Milla Donovan's parents have checked her out of the hospital Matt's been visiting and are trying to keep him away from their daughter. In the Daredevil: Blood of the Tarantula one-shot, Daredevil helps Carlos LaMuerto face down his cousin, Luis, who is being backed up by his former gang from Argentina as they have arrived in New York to steal the power of the Black Tarantula and return it to its country of origin. It's the biggest event of the MCU that no one's talking about! Because no one really cares! When did James “Rhodey" Rhodes aka War Machine get taken over by a Skrull? The boys try to figure out the perfect time to nab the real Rhodes, try to figure out just when the invasion they kept oh so secret kicked off and try to figure out how Skrull work? It's confusing and badly presented in the TV show. From missed opportunities to clowns as a metaphor, we ensure that no stone (or gem (which Rhodes could have just grabbed (if he was a skrull at the time) as he was right there)) is left unturned trying to figure out when this feasibly could have happened. The answer won't surprise you. Or it might, as you didn't watch this garbage.Buy our terrible merch here and check out the Bad Brain Boys+ on our website or Apple Podcasts at apple.co/badbrainboys.
