Welcome to a great two part series with comic book historian and writer, Kevin Garcia. Kevin joins the Smoke Circle to discuss American comic's great (roughly) 150 year history and how intertwined they are with the history of America itself. Through comic books, readers can see reflections of American policies, commonly held beliefs, attitudes about America's place in the world and how America views its citizens, and also, how that all changed over time. From children to adults, comics have been beloved by all ages and all peoples as readers see themselves reflected in the triumphs and tribulations of their heroes. *~*~*~*~*~* Get to know our guest, Kevin Garcia! https://kevingarciasite.wordpress.com/ Kevin's TikTok Kevin's Instagram *~*~*~*~* Further Reading and Resources for the Curious: American Comics: A History by Jeremy Dauber Superman Smashes the Klan by Gene Luen Yang (Author)  Gurihiru (Illustrator) Katie's Episode on The Creation of Superman Laurel's Episode on The Lavender Scare (McCarthyism, Communist Outing, Morality Codes) YouTube Video from Dr. Darren R. Welcome to the June Yancy Street Special: The Patsy Walker Hellcat Story! Why? Christopher Cantwell's Iron Man (2020) series has featured Patsy as a regular co-star, culminating in the two heroes starting a relationship, and Stark eventually proposing to Walker. Check out Iron Man #20 and Iron Man/Hellcat Annual #1 for how that turns out! Meanwhile, I can guarantee there's SOMETHING about comics in this podcast that will be new to you, so don't miss out! Patsy has been around since 1944, making her one of the oldest characters at Marvel Comics today, predating Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, and even the first Avengers team.  Of course, as she is another complex female comic book character, this patsy podcast comes with some serious warnings. Content Warnings: suicide, mental health, exploitation, narcissism, cheating, gaslighting, attempted sacrifice, etc. If you want to see the written list of KEYS 0:08:33, Recommended Reading, and Hellcat Aliases with their origins, check out the coinciding blog post on my site (no ads!), here. Also be sure to check out the Image Post that goes along with this episode, linked here. Patsy's Hellcat has been on a bunch of different teams through the decades, so that is covered at 0:16:09. An extensive look at Patsy's Friends and Allies 0:25:05, including family, features characters from her days under the Timely flag, as well as later in the main 616 universe, through to modern times. A short (ish) list of Patsy's Love Interests 0:50:30 and Enemies 0:56:23 follow, and you'll notice there is a LOT of crossover between those two lists.  Then it's on to her Powers 1:00:30, Costumes 1:03:48, and some fun Taglines and Quotes 1:14:08 from her vast comic history! Finally, I cover the Other Realities 1:16:41 Patsy appears in, including media like TV and Games.  At last, we reach Patsy's FULL HISTORY 1:23:02 including her Pre-Marvel 616 Comic History; Patsy coming to the main 616; Patsy as Hellcat, the Defender and Avenger; the changes of her life once she meets Daimon Hellstrom; and the modern history from Hellcat (2000) and on. I wrap this baby up with my final thoughts 1:51:15 on Patsy's tumultuous, extended history, summarizing all that she's come to represent and stand for, as further questions about her character that I'd like addressed in the future.  SOURCES Marvel Comics Marvel.Fandom.com wikipedia.com sensationalshegeek.weebly.com http://toonopedia.com/patsy.htm https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/PatsyWalkerAKAHellcat?from=ComicBook.Hellcat https://www.cbr.com/patsy-walker-timely-comics-archie-knockoff-debut/ https://screenrant.com/marvel-is-finally-taking-an-avengers-suicide-seriously/ https://gayleague.com/moondragon/ https://www.statueforum.com/showthread.php?t=7487 https://www.cbr.com/at-least-your-mom-isnt-patsy-walkers-mom/ https://www.cbr.com/marvel-comics-millie-model-tessie-typist-nellie-nurse-dolly-dill/   The Yancy Street Discord! https://discord.gg/aVXYYY7M  -ALL ABOUT CLEA: https://tinyurl.com/52jxu7yj -HISTORY OF MAGIK: https://tinyurl.com/5n7cmkxj -NEW!
