North Shore Crime Cases was recorded live on October 10, 2024 at Off Cabot in Beverly, Mass. This bonus episode features questions from our audience in an open Q+A setting. Nothing was off limits. Episode: https://www.crimeofthetruestkind.com/post/ep74northshorecasesJoin us for a captivating journey through some of the North Shore of Massachusetts' most perplexing crime cases like that of Susan Taraskiewicz's unsolved murder and the person who found her body, the true gift that Colleen Ritzer, a dedicated math teacher at Danvers High, was to every student she touched, what stories have been told about missing Lynn boy Jesus de la Cruz, the impact of The Station Nightclub Fire, Wenham dermotologist, Richard Sharpe's history of family violence, the disappearance of Maura Murray 20 years ago and how searching for missing people has changed during that time, the tragic fate of Beryl Atherton, and the disturbing story of 16-year-old Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino, who was found dismembered along the Merrimack River in November 2016. A classmate from Lawrence High School was convicted in his case. We emphasize the essential role of community involvement in keeping these people and their stories alive, to push for justice for others like them by taking action to shed light on unresolved crimes and to advocate of the missing and murdered. The true crime genre carries with it a weighty responsibility and consideration must be paid to the families of crime victims. The converstation does not shy away from the ethical considerations involved, touching on the importance of compassion and respect when recounting real lives with the mission of empathetic storytelling. Host Anngelle Wood reaffirms her commitment to treating these stories with empathy and care. Happy Halloween B-oo's Crew! This Halloween we travel to Massachusetts to visit the worlds most notorious asylum, Danvers State Hospital! A Kirkbride building known as "The Kirkbride, The Witches Castle, Hell House on the Hill and The Castle on the Hill". There are many places that claim to be "The most haunted," but Danvers, being the inspiration for H.P Lovecraft's Arkham Sanitorium and then becoming the model for Arkham Asylum in Batmnan, seems to hold that title! Also known as the birthplace of the prefrontal lobotomy, Danvers was built to be a gentle care facility, but by the 1930's that would all change. Straightjackets, electroshock therapy, hydro therapy, lobotomies and many other "treatments" were used here....including the "Spread Eagle Therapy!"This is truly the house of horrors. SO get ready B-oo's Crew, because this one will have you re-thinking going to the hospital!Do you have a story you'd like read or played on the show? Are you interested in the history of the Salem witch trials of 1692? Do you wonder if you have a genealogical connection to any of the people involved in it? It's a unique distinction since not everyone in New England was involved. If you have an ancestor whom you can somehow connect to Salem Village of Danvers, you may have a witch trials connection. The town of Salem was not the exact location of the witch trials. Though the trials bear the town's name, they occurred in neighboring Salem village. Today, Salem Village is known as Danvers, and you will find several original buildings and sites associated with the trials there... What a CreepThe Salem Witch TrialsSeason 27, Episode 1The Salem Witch Trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions that took place in colonial Massachusetts from February 1692 to May 1693. These trials resulted in the execution of 20 individuals, most of whom were women, who were accused of practicing witchcraft. The hysteria began in the Puritan village of Salem, which is now present-day Danvers, but the panic quickly spread to other communities in the region. In this episode, we explore what life was like in Salem Village and examine the factors that led nearly 20% of its population to believe that they or their neighbors were involved in witchcraft. Slate Town is a small New York State Farm Brewery dedicated to brewing outstanding, small-batch beer using local, seasonal ingredients. Twisted Fate Brewing is a small Nano-brewery taproom in Danvers, Massachusetts managed by Head Brewer and Co-Owner David Pinette. Helping to run the business side of the brewery is David's wife Erica Tritta. Erica brings seventeen years of legal experience and running a small business to the ownership group. Co-Owner Bill McNamara is also a valuable member to the ownership group with his financial experience. And Co-Owner Kim McNamara brings her prior restaurant and mother of two experience to the brewery. Pinette studied business, with a concentration in accounting during his undergraduate studies at Bridgewater State University. David went on to work for some of the largest financial institutions in the world while doing investment and tax accounting. In 2010, David decided to leave the business world and make a jump to education, where in 2017 he received a Master's degree in education. Over seven years ago, David brewed his first batch of beer and fell in love with the process. Since that moment, David has worked on numerous recipe creations and perfecting the process of brewing beer. David is in charge of the general operation of the brewery. Erica Tritta, Esq., serves as counsel and operations director for the brewery. She has been practicing law in Massachusetts since 2007 as a sole practitioner at her own firm. In addition to practicing law, Erica served in a consultant role for 5 years for an international Massachusetts based quick service restaurant franchise. In her law practice, Erica works with families and individuals in Probate and Family Court and Juvenile Court. Happy spooky Wednesday, friends! This week is Kala's birthday episode! She celebrates by telling you all about the Danvers State Hospital in Danvers, Massachusetts. Once a psychiatric hospital in the late 1800s (with all the horrible history that goes along with that) it is now the site of luxury apartments. But would you want to pay top dollar to be surrounded by apparitions and disembodied screams? And Brittany gifts both Kala and you listeners with tales of the spooky activity in the Appalachian Mountains. Cryptids, spirits, and bears! Oh my! Don't go out for a midnight stroll out there, you may not come back.
IN THIS EPISODE: Mother Shipton was known for her prognostication skills – but she was even more well known for her grotesque appearance. So much so that she was nicknamed The York Witch, and the Devil's Daughter. But others have another name for her… hoax. (The Devil's Daughter) *** A family heirloom begins acting strange when a woman moves into her deceased grandmother's home. (I Moved Into My Dead Grandmother's House) *** Is it possible that ghosts, visions, and other paranormal experiences are not only real – but also good for your mental health? (Therapeutic Ghosts) *** After it closed, the old hospital site became a popular destination for thrill-seeking kids looking for the scare of a lifetime. Why does Danvers State Hospital rank among history's most infamous asylums? (The Infamy of Danvers State Hospital) *** Attend any amateur magic show and most assuredly you will hear a certain word at least once. Why do illusionists use this word? What does it mean – if anything? We'll look at the very interesting history behind the word “Abracadabra.” (Say The Magic Word)YOUTUBE CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS…00:00:00.000 = Title Story Preview and Show Open00:05:53.740 = The Devil's Daughter, Mother Shipton00:11:49.055 = I Moved Into My Dead Grandmother's House00:17:50.073 = The Infamy of Danvers State Hospital00:24:26.031 = Therapeutic Ghosts00:34:31.408 = Say The Magic Word00:40:27.963 = Show CloseSOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“Arkham's Dark Past” was written by Darren Marlar“I Moved Into My Dead Grandmother's House” by Kelsey for Your Ghost Stories: https://tinyurl.com/rjcvecr“The Devil's Daughter” by Marc Hartzman for Weird Historian: https://tinyurl.com/vp6vlo4“Therapeutic Ghosts” by Andreas Sommer for Aeon: https://tinyurl.com/r7xcv2v“The Infamy of Danvers State Hospital” by William DeLong for All That's Interesting: https://tinyurl.com/rd223yu“Say The Magic Word” from Ancient Origins: https://tinyurl.com/sl9nlzmWeird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library= = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. In 1692, claims of satanic rituals, ghosts, and seemingly “afflicted” children stirred puritanical imaginations, deepened by petty rifts between powerful families and rival congregations in Salem Village (now known as Danvers, Massachusetts). In response to the growing number of citizen complaints and imprisonments, Massachusetts Bay Colony Governor William Phips appointed a man with no legal training to preside over the trials. More than a dozen poor decisions and questionable verdicts later, townspeople became all too familiar with death sentences by hanging.
