Send us a textThe Court of Lorenzo the Magnificent Part 4: Angelo Poliziano Born Agnolo Ambrogini in Montepulciano in 1454, Poliziano rose to intellectual supremacy in Laurentian Florence as the premier Humanist and poet of the Medici court. This episode exlpores his education, life, and works in vernacular Italian, namely his Stanze and l'Orfeo. Poliziano is inseparable from the larger history of the Medici court. His output is directly tied to Medici family. He was friends with Giuliano and witnessed his murder at the climax of the infamous Pazzi Conspiracy. He was loved by Lucrezia Tornabuoni, but greatly unfavorable in the eyes of Lorenzo's wife, Clarice Orsini. Then, he helped educate the young Michelangelo and even advised on subjects for his earliest works. This discussion looks at these relationships, ultimately arriving at the questionable circumstances of his premature death at the age of forty in 1494. Works Discussed, Michelangelo Buonarotti, Battle of the Centaurs, ca.  1492 https://www.casabuonarroti.it/en/museum/collections/michelangelos-works/battle-of-the-centaurs/Follow/Support/Watch: https://linktr.ee/italian_renaissance_podcast Get additional content by becoming a Patron: patreon.com/TheItalianRenaissancePodcast Support the show

Dazu Bibelworte. Sehr tröstliche November-Speise, dieses Seelenfutter.

In 1494 upon the expulsion of the Medici from Florence, Michelangelo Buonarotti left his native city for the Republic of Venice. His stay there was brief and mostly undocumented. Yet, close comparison of source material and stylistic analysis reveals that perhaps Michelangelo was more influenced by his time in Venice than previously considered. The master all'antica marble sculptor Tullio Lombardo had likely completed his masterpiece Adam the year before Michelangelo's arrival. Was the divine Michelangelo inspired by a Venetian Renaissance master before creating his own large-scale Bacchus, a marble nude figure modelled on antiquity? In this episode, we unpack the layers of influence that appear to manifest in Michelangelo's work as a potential result of Venetian influence. Instagram/Facebook: italian_renaissance_podcast Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/ItalianRenShopGet additional content by becoming a Patron: patreon.com/TheItalianRenaissancePodcast Support the show

Details, credits, errata: This week’s guest is the wonderful Alan Scherstuhl, whose incredible Studies in Crap column is one of the great works of 21st century journalism and can be read here. Alan suggested we watch Carl Reiner’s 1977 box office smash Oh, God!, starring John Denver as a schmoe and George Burns as God. It’s a really interesting artifact of the period if not a particularly good movie (Terri Garr, who is awesome in everything, is worth the price of admission), and it was hugely controversial largely because the title was a swear.1977 is a wild year in the movies—Star Wars, Saturday Night Fever, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Eraserhead, The Hills Have Eyes, Annie Hall, Smokey and the Bandit and Network all came out that year. This, believe it or not, made more money than most of those! It can be watched on the streaming service of your choice for a fee—the Redbox link is here. This movie is based on Avery Corman’s 1971 novel of the same name, and can be bought here. Our episode art for this week is Michelangelo Buonarotti’s The Creation of Adam, from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, a portrayal the film’s God ranks below John Denver’s appearance on The Dinah Shore Show, for reasons known only to Him.Our theme song is Louis Armstrong and His Hot 5’s Muskrat Ramble, made freely available by the Boston Public Library and audio engineering shop George Blood, LP through the Internet Archive. We continue our discussion of the architecture of Michelangelo Buonarotti with an exploration of two of his most important projects – the Laurentine Library, in which his sculptural understanding of form and mass is most powerful and disconcerting – and the Piazza del Campidoglio, an urban ensemble which would become a definitive reference for the idea of civic space. In between George extemporises for about 20 minutes on late medieval Italian history despite having done no research, and we dip into the memoirs of Benvenuto Cellini.
