In my MA thesis, I analyzed Baron d'Holbach's rhetorical strategies and his reliance on natural philosophy to construct a materialistic interpretation of mankind's physical origins and social development. From there, I developed a larger interest in perceptions of the human body as the mediator of social experiences. My research builds from questions posed by theories of embodiment and examines the ways in which relationships between humans in society were perceived to be channeled or stymied by corporeal properties. My dissertation explored how eighteenth-century writers employed the language and theories of physiology and medicine to map new foundations for society, especially in the burgeoning field of political economy and the "debate over luxury." Contemporaries used a new "corporeal vocabulary," based largely on sensationalism and theories of the nervous system, to address the growth of commerce and consumption of material goods and point toward both the degenerative and optimistic aspects of both. Since 2020, I've shifted gears to merge my academic historical interests with a lifetime of devotion to punk rock music. My new project asks when individuals listen to punk rock, what historical messages do they hear? Alongside that central question, I ask how punk lyrics appear when filtered through an historical lens. In what ways do punk musicians use history to sustain economic, environmental, political, racial, religious, social, and sexual critiques? How is the past given shape and meaning by punk lyrics? How visible, so to speak, are the historical elements? Essentially, what purpose does the past serve in punk music? Historical examination is not only central to how we define punk, and how punks define(d) themselves, but punk treatment of the past should be integrated into how we evaluate public consumption of history. They impart meaning to the past and challenge contemporary understandings of the past, present, and future. While punks do not create new knowledge, their music acts as an alternative historical epistemology that tracks alongside professional historians. They treat both the content of the past and the craft of History. I'm hoping to have a completed book manuscript on this topic by the summer of 2026: "Echoes of a Dreadful Past": Making Meaning of the Past through Punk Rock.

They reviewed the Hellraiser Revival game's Cenobite Collector's Edition, comparing it to the previous Leviathan edition and noting the lack of a signed Clive Barker print as a key difference. The hosts watched a new developer diary for the game, showcasing more detailed Cenobite animations and gameplay footage with Doug Bradley's voice work. They also discussed upcoming Hellraiser conventions including Mad Monster Party in Arizona and Days of the Dead events in Chicago and Atlanta, featuring several Cenobite actors. The podcast concluded with plans for their next book club discussion of "The Body Politic" from Books of Blood Volume 4 and a vote on which 1987 film to compare to Hellraiser. Hellraiser Developer Diary Discussion Ryan and José discussed technical issues with audio and video settings before planning to watch a developer diary video about Cenobytes and Pinhead from the Hellraiser series. José shared a link to a YouTube video and they briefly discussed its content, though Ryan only watched a 30-second preview due to the initial link issue. The conversation ended with Ryan asking about "Team French" but the question remained unclear due to audio issues. Nightbreed 4K Restoration Discussion José and Ryan discussed a new 4K restoration of the film Nightbreed, including both theatrical and director's cuts, with enhanced features like Dolby Vision HDR, new artwork, and a companion book. They reflected on previous collector's editions and debated whether physical media releases, including 4K, would continue to be relevant given the rise of digital formats. Both agreed that while digital media is growing, physical media will likely persist in some form, particularly for collectors and professionals in the film industry. Physical Media's Enduring Relevance José and Ryan discussed the ongoing relevance of physical media in the age of streaming services. They noted that while streaming has become popular, limitations in internet speeds and the temporary nature of licensed content on platforms like Netflix mean physical media will likely continue to have a place. They highlighted how streaming platforms have shifted focus toward producing their own content rather than licensing existing material, leading viewers to seek out older content on alternative platforms like YouTube. The conversation concluded with appreciation for companies like Arrow, Shout Factory, and Turbine Media that continue to produce physical media releases. Nightbreed 4K Release Discussion Ryan and José discussed a new Arrow Video 4K release of Nightbreed, comparing the UK and potential US versions. They noted that the UK release includes exclusive extras like behind-the-scenes footage and UK-specific content, though they were uncertain if these features would be included in the US version. The UK release is priced at 30 pounds, which Ryan and José considered a good deal, though they agreed to wait for the US release to potentially save money and see if it includes similar extras. Hellraiser Game Edition Comparisons José and Ryan discussed the differences between various editions of the Hellraiser Revival game, including the new Cenobite Collector's Edition priced at $199. They compared features between the Leviathan Edition and Cenobite Edition, noting that the Leviathan includes a hand-signed art print while the Cenobite edition features a Cenobite statue and other exclusive items. The discussion highlighted concerns about the long pre-order period, which has been ongoing for about a year since the last pre-order update in June 2025, and they noted that the new dev diary "Cenobytes" provides additional footage of Cenobites in the game. Hellraiser Revival Collector's Edition Discussion José and Ryan discussed a Hellraiser Revival Collector's Edition, which includes a Cenobite statue, puzzle box, enamel pins, and a digital soundtrack. They watched a dev diary video showcasing the game's features, including platforming elements and various Cenobite characters. The video highlighted the game's focus on grotesque scenes and jump scares, with Doug Bradley's involvement adding credibility to the project. José and Ryan noted the game's potential for a gradual descent into horror, similar to Big Trouble in Little China, and expressed hope for an upcoming release date announcement. Temple of the Killer Tiger Monkeys Ryan and José discussed the audio drama "Temple of the Killer Tiger Monkeys," which features original Cenobite actors including Doug Bradley, Simon Bamford, and Nicholas Vince. They agreed to create a future podcast episode about the series, potentially including an interview with Simon Banford. The conversation also covered Ghanaian movie posters, specifically a Hellraiser poster by artist Heavy J, which is now available for purchase through Deadly Prey Gallery. Finally, they mentioned upcoming Hellraiser and Nightbreed conventions featuring the Cenobite actors. Horror Conventions and Content Planning José and Ryan discussed upcoming horror conventions, including Mad Monster Party Arizona in July 2026 and Days of the Dead events in Chicago and Atlanta. They expressed interest in meeting Peter Atkins at the Chicago event in November 2026, with both planning to discuss time off work to attend. José also mentioned upcoming content plans, including a book club discussion of "The Body Politic" from Books of Blood Volume 4 and a vote on a 1987 movie to compete against Hellraiser. Horror Movies Discussion Ryan and José discussed various horror movies, including The Lost Boys, Prince of Darkness, The Gate, Bad Taste, Angel Heart, Beaks, and Iron Warrior. They shared their opinions on these films, with José expressing a preference for Bad Taste due to its chaotic nature. Ryan mentioned his interest in watching Prince of Darkness, The Gate, or Angel Heart again. They also briefly discussed actor Stephen Dorff's role in The Gate and his appearance in Blade. The conversation concluded with José mentioning Nicholas Vince's recent campaign for the Green Party in the UK elections. UK Elections and Media Discussion José and Ryan discussed recent local elections in the UK, with Ryan encouraging José to vote for Nicholas Vince in future elections. They then talked about editing a podcast episode, noting that while some parts like screen sharing would be easy to edit out, removing fillers like "ums" would be more time-consuming. The conversation concluded with a discussion about a Hellraiser script booklet, comparing different versions and discussing whether certain autographs were real or printed.

Today we celebrate this episode of the Faqs Project with 2 Milestones this is Episode 200 a great feat for this small but mighty Comic Book Podcast. Our Guests are Lloyd and Natosha Jones of Midnight Comics who are also celebrating 5 years as an Indie Comic Publisher as I've been a fan of their books since 2021's The Unbeloved. Midnight Comics currently has a Kickstarter live that is a 5 year Omnibus of all their works without leaving an ounce of their creativity out. Such titles as The Grey, Sol, The Unbeloved, Dogma, Last Day, Admoni, Raven's Omen and Powers that Be 9 titles/13 books are all included. We get a bit Nostalgic as we go back to Midnight Comics early beginnings and even as current as them tasked with a group of interns who have recently accomplished a Kickstarter campaign themselves. As Lloyd and Natosha would put it, as we continue to climb we have to pull those stating this journey up.A fabulous accomplishment for a Black Indie Comic Book Publisher as they say the best exercise is patience. Contemporaries have come and gone, but Midnight Comics with this Omnibus find a means to showcase their works all while building a fresh slate for the next 5 years.Written and created by Lloyd and Natosha JonesArtwork byOz EzeoguKucifer WilsonPanuTiger SalmonGabriel NissiKrazed KaiToluwalase Samuel

The discussion covered the two commentary tracks - one with director David Bruckner and another with effects team members Josh Russell and Sierra Spencer - exploring the film's production details, practical effects, and design elements including the puzzle box configurations created by Martin Emborg. The group examined the movie's technical aspects, including the loom mechanism, Cenobite designs, and location shooting in Serbia, while also discussing the film's connection to Clive Barker and its place within the Hellraiser franchise. They also reviewed the special features on the Blu-ray, including trailers for all Hellraiser movies and various featurettes about the production process.   Hellraiser 2022 Blu-ray Analysis The group discussed the Hellraiser 2022 4K Blu-ray release from Turbine Media, which was the first physical release in Ultra HD anywhere. They reviewed the German booklet included with some editions, which José had helped translate, and discussed the movie's production details including the puzzle box designs by Martin Emborg. The participants, including Ed and Nina Martinez, praised the David Bruckner commentary track and shared observations about the film's visual differences between streaming and Blu-ray versions. They also discussed Easter eggs in the film, including a Clive Barker print and a Johann Fusil painting, and explored the connection between the new Hellraiser film and David Goyer's previous work on "The Night House." Hellraiser Art Book Discussion The group discussed the creation of an art book for the Hellraiser film, with Ed expressing interest in helping produce it and noting that the Russells had previously shown interest in creating such a book. They discussed the film's commentary track, where David Bruckner revealed he hadn't watched the movie since completing it years ago. The conversation also covered potential extended scenes, particularly regarding the death of the lawyer character, though the group noted these scenes may not have been filmed. Film Commentary and Production Insights The group discussed commentary tracks for a film, particularly praising David Bruckner's commentary for being engaging without dead air. Ed shared details about creating a commentary track with Josh, Spencer, and Sierra Russell, noting that Nina helped coordinate it. They discussed the film's production, including abandoned subplots and design elements, such as the character Mask and a rejected bloodier design for Pinhead. Ed mentioned that photos of the alternative Pinhead design were available on their YouTube channel. Cenobites and Leviathan Tech Design The group discussed the design and creation of the Cenobites and Leviathan tech in a movie, focusing on specific details like the appearance of the Hellpriest, the materials used for the suits, and practical effects. They noted the challenges faced by actors wearing heavy silicone appliances and the adjustments made to makeup during filming. The conversation also touched on the aesthetic choices, such as the shininess of the Leviathan tech and the decision to move away from leather suits, though some participants expressed a preference for the traditional look. Hellraiser Production Effects Discussion The group discussed production details and creative decisions from a Hellraiser movie, focusing on practical effects and character transformations. They examined the choice to use a "hurdy-gurdy" instead of a loom, and discussed the practical mechanics of the device worn by Goran under his clothing. The conversation also covered the Faraday cage concept and its potential use as a protective barrier against Cenobites, noting how the film combined elements from Hellraiser 1 and 2 while incorporating significant practical effects including miniature sets for the labyrinth. Hellraiser Movie Bonus Features The group discussed the Hellraiser movie, focusing on the transformation scene and commentary tracks. They explored the bonus features on Disc 3, including trailers for various Hellraiser movies in both English and German. The conversation also touched on the creators' workshop space and their previous work on films like The Ritual and The Night House. The discussion concluded with a debate about the best way to watch movies, particularly atmospheric ones, with a preference for theater or high-quality home viewing over mobile devices. Unused Movie Concept Art Review The group discussed various aspects of a movie, including concerns about content and design choices. They examined unused concept art by Keith Thompson, including designs for Cenobites and other characters. The discussion covered details about specific character designs, transformations, and technical elements that were considered but not used in the final film. José shared images from Thompson's blog and explained some of the design decisions, while Ed and Ryan provided additional context and trivia about the film's production. Leviathan Concept Art Review José presented concept art designs for the film Leviathan, including detailed illustrations of Cenobites, the brother puppet, and the character Leviathan itself. He shared designs by both Keith Thompson and Peter Morbacher, noting that while Thompson's designs were ultimately used in the film, Morbacher's alternative concepts, such as a different version of Butterball and various Cenobite designs, were not implemented. The group discussed how some designs incorporated elements like skin capes and unique facial features, with Ed commenting on the use of CG in the film compared to previous projects with Doug Bradley. Hellraiser Design and Special Effects The group discussed the design and creation of the Hellraiser movie, focusing on the Cenobites and special effects. They explored how the writers approached the story, including early concepts and how they incorporated elements from Clive Barker's work while maintaining the film's unique tone. The discussion also covered the "Leviathan Tech" feature, which examined the mechanical torture devices worn by the Cenobites, and highlighted the challenges in bringing these designs to life, particularly for the Chatterer character.

fWotD Episode 3246: Loveday (1458) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 25 March 2026, is Loveday (1458).The Loveday of 1458 (also known as the Annunciation Loveday) was a ritualistic reconciliation between warring factions of the English nobility that took place at St Paul's Cathedral on 25 March 1458. Following the outbreak of the Wars of the Roses in 1455, it was the culmination of lengthy negotiations initiated by King Henry VI to resolve the lords' rivalries. English politics had become increasingly factional during his reign, and was exacerbated in 1453 when he became catatonic. This effectively left the government leaderless, and eventually the king's cousin, and at the time heir to the throne, Richard, Duke of York, was appointed protector during the king's illness. Alongside York were his allies from the politically and militarily powerful Neville family, led by Richard, Earl of Salisbury, and his eldest son, Richard, Earl of Warwick. When the king returned to health a year later, the protectorship ended but partisanship within the government did not.Supporters of King Henry and his wife, Queen Margaret, have been loosely called "Lancastrians", the king being head of the House of Lancaster, while the duke and his party are considered "Yorkists", after his title of Duke of York. By the 1450s, York felt increasingly excluded from government, and in May 1455—possibly fearing an ambush by his enemies—led an army against the King at the First Battle of St Albans. There, in what has been called more of a series of assassinations than a battle, the personal enemies of York and the Nevilles—the Duke of Somerset, the Earl of Northumberland, and Lord Clifford—perished. In 1458 the king attempted to unite his feuding nobles with a public display of friendship under the auspices of the Church at St Paul's Cathedral. Following much discussion and negotiation, and amid the presence of large, armed, noble retinues which almost led to another outbreak of war, a compromise was announced. To celebrate, a procession was held by all the major participants, who walked hand-in-hand from Westminster Palace to the cathedral. Queen Margaret was partnered with York, and other adversaries were paired off accordingly, and the sons of the dead Lancastrian lords took their fathers' places. Certain reparations were ordained, all by the Yorkist lords, who for their part accepted full responsibility for the Battle of St Albans. They were ordered to make payments to the dead lords' widows and sons, and masses were paid for the souls of all who had died. Contemporaries varied in their views of the accord. Some wrote verses expressing hope that it would lead to a new-found peace and prosperity; others were more pessimistic as to its value. In the long run, the king's Loveday and its agreements had no long-lasting benefit. Within a few months, petty violence between the lords had broken out again and, within the year, York and Lancaster faced each other at the Battle of Blore Heath. Historians debate who—if anyone—gained from the 1458 Loveday. On the one hand, the crown publicised its role as the ultimate court of appeal but, conversely, although the Yorkists were bound to pay large sums in compensation, this was done with money already owed by the government. Fundamentally, factional discord was highlighted on the public stage, and the war it was intended to prevent was only deferred. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:15 UTC on Wednesday, 25 March 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Loveday (1458) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Joanna.

They analyzed the painting's composition, colors, and techniques, considering whether it was truly a self-portrait or perhaps a character study. Don Bertram shared insights as an artist and collector, while José and Ryan explored themes of transformation and creativity. They also briefly discussed the 2022 Hellraiser movie release and its special features. The conversation concluded with plans to vote on future art pieces to analyze. Summary Clive Barker Self-Portrait Discussion The group discussed a self-portrait painting by Clive Barker from 2007, which was selected through a listener vote. José provided context about the painting, including its size (60x48 inches), medium (oil on canvas), and exhibition history at the Bert Green Gallery. The painting sold for $8,000 and was described as a beautiful character portrait. The discussion concluded with José inviting the participants to share their analysis of the portrait's style and emotional impact, though specific reactions were not captured in the transcript. Clive Barker Self-Portrait Discussion Don and Ryan discussed a large self-portrait by Clive Barker, noting its similarities to his "Abarat" style and comparing it to earlier works. Don expressed a preference for Barker's more cerebral images over this illustrative piece, suggesting the large size (4 by 5 feet) might be intended to command attention rather than being a traditional self-portrait. José proposed that the size creates a sense of confrontation and demands engagement, while Don speculated that the piece might originally have been intended for a different character in the Abarat series before being repurposed as a self-portrait. Clive Barker Painting Analysis Discussion The group discussed a painting that appears to depict Clive Barker, with José arguing it's a self-portrait while Don suggested it might be a portrait of another character. José analyzed the artistic elements, describing the symmetrical composition and expressionistic style with bold brushstrokes and flames as an aura rather than a setting. The discussion included comparisons to other Barker works and references to specific book editions, with Don suggesting the painting might be used as a dust jacket or limited edition book cover. Clive Barker Painting Interpretation Discussion The group discussed a painting of Clive Barker, interpreting the fire surrounding him as representing transformation, danger, or creative intensity. José and Ryan connected this to Barker's recurring theme of characters being forged or transformed through proximity to powerful or high-stakes events, while remaining intact. They noted the painting's medium of oils, which allows for layers and revisions similar to how people build their self-identity, and expressed interest in seeing a higher quality image of the painting. Gallery Exhibition Art Discussion The group discussed a painting that was part of a gallery exhibition called "New Paintings and Works on Paper" in 2007. They clarified that the $8,000 price listed on Phil and Sarah's website represents the original asking price rather than a confirmed sale price. José shared his screen to show other paintings from the same exhibition, including "She Waits" and "Voices of the Damned," which was possibly related to Barbie Wilde's book. The discussion also touched on other works by Aberet, including some black and white pieces and drawings. Clive Barker Self-Portrait Analysis The group discussed a self-portrait painting by Clive Barker, examining its artistic techniques and comparing it to other Barker self-portraits. They analyzed specific elements like the use of color, eye details, and the symbolic representation of a monster inside the artist's head. The conversation concluded with a brief discussion about the Hellraiser 2022 Blu-ray release, including its special features and the inclusion of one of Barker's paintings in the film, though it was covered with plastic and barely visible. AI Summary (News) Quick recap Ryan and José recorded episode 527 of their Clive Barker podcast, focusing on recent news updates about Hellraiser-related projects. José expressed concerns about the game's marketing as "very explicit" and questioned the focus on explicit content versus storytelling. Hellraiser Game Development Discussion José and Ryan discussed a Hellraiser game and its development, focusing on the challenges of depicting violence and sex in the game while staying true to the franchise's lore. José expressed optimism about the game's potential, noting the strong story and powerful narrative. They also discussed finding a specific social media post about the game and planned to continue their conversation later. Clive Barker Podcast News Episode Ryan and José discussed comments on a social media post about a game, with José noting the significant engagement it received. They shared experiences with previous games, including "Agony" and "Hellraiser," with both expressing disappointment in their quality. Nightbreed 4K Release Plans Ryan and José discussed the upcoming 4K release of Nightbreed by Arrow Films on May 25th, 2026, which will include both the theatrical and director's cuts in Ultra HD. They noted that while the director's cut was originally scanned in HD, the 4K release will feature new content including a feature-length documentary and interviews with critics. Ryan also shared news from Screen Rant about Brian Fuller working on a new TV series with Clive Barker, though details about the project are still unknown. Film Projects and Podcast Plans Ryan and José discussed various film and television projects, including a potential Mick Garris and Clive Barker collaboration titled "Theater of Blood." They also talked about their podcast content, including an upcoming episode about the Hellraiser 2022 Ultra HD Blu-ray release and a future discussion about Clive Barker's character portraits with Don Bertram. The conversation touched on the challenges of keeping track of all announced projects and the disappointment when some don't materialize.

They critiqued the film's budget constraints, werewolf design, and narrative deviations from the source material, noting its blend of horror and coming-of-age themes. José highlighted the movie's attempt to symbolize repression and the duality of human nature, while Ryan pointed out plot holes and inconsistencies. They also reflected on the cultural context of the 1980s, including references to gas shortages, alcohol can collections, and the impact of violence on society. The conversation concluded with a discussion on the evolution of television technology and its impact on viewership habits. Cycle of the Werewolf Film Analysis José and Ryan discussed the film "Cycle of the Werewolf," based on Stephen King's illustrated novella. They analyzed the movie's plot, characters, and musical score, noting its adaptation from the original story and the performances of the cast, including Gary Busey and Corey Haim. They also compared the film's portrayal of certain scenes and characters to the source material and discussed the movie's atmospheric music and visual effects. Analyzing Werewolf Movie Elements Ryan and José discussed the motivations and character development of a werewolf in a movie, focusing on its justification for killing and its background. They analyzed the werewolf's design and makeup effects, comparing it to other famous werewolf portrayals. The conversation also touched on the movie's setting, characters, and casting, including notable actors like Bill Smitrovich and Lawrence Tierney. They expressed confusion about certain plot points, such as the werewolf's choice of location to hide. Stephen King's Werewolf Film Adaptation Ryan and José discussed the film adaptation of Stephen King's novella "Cycle of the Werewolf," noting its blend of childhood adventure and horror. They observed deviations from the original story, such as the timing of the killings and the portrayal of the werewolf's behavior. José explained that the novella consists of 12 vignettes, while the film presents a more continuous narrative. They also commented on the film's casting choices, including the appearance of a character played by a young actor, and discussed the film's themes and connections to other works by King. The Wolf of Wall Street Analysis José and Ryan discussed the movie "The Wolf of Wall Street," focusing on its portrayal of a werewolf and the townspeople's futile attempt to capture it. They noted the quality of the wheelchair built by a character and the effectiveness of the werewolf's transformation scenes. José pointed out inconsistencies in the movie's portrayal of the wheelchair and the werewolf's appearance. They also touched on the movie's narrative structure, with a girl narrating from the future. Movie Narrative and Character Analysis José and Ryan discussed the narrative choices in a movie, focusing on the decision to have an adult narrate rather than a child, which they felt might have made the story seem less threatening. They analyzed the portrayal of the town's inhabitants as unusual-looking, attributing it to the film's attempt to create an atmosphere of paranoia. The conversation also touched on the film's budget, casting choices, and the use of tropes, with José and Ryan expressing a preference for more relatable, average-looking actors in movies. They questioned the logic of certain plot points, such as the priest's missing eye and the sheriff's decision to investigate alone, and discussed the film's representation of repression through the werewolf character. Silver Bullet: Priest's Justification Ryan and José discussed the symbolism and themes in the movie "Silver Bullet," focusing on the priest's character and his justification for murder. They analyzed the tension in a scene where a disabled child is trapped and threatened, and the priest's attempt to justify his actions. “the high opinion formed of him by his contemporaries.” [VALL] When the first Sherlock Holmes short stories came on the scene, they were something of a novelty: non-serialized, self-contained tales that put the Strand Magazine on the map. As with any success story, this one inspired imitators. These contemporaries of Sherlock Holmes inhabited the pages of the Strand and many other magazines of the day. Author Michael Cohen has stepped forward to catalog and categorize them from the years 1891 to 1914. This surprising array of characters includes those who were consciously not trying to be Sherlock Holmes, ranging from the occult to females, bumbling detectives, doctors and scientists, the criminal class and more. In , Cohen gives us a handy and valuable resource; its subtitle indicates it is a Mystery Guide and Finding List. In today's readings we hear about Peter and from Paul, two of the giants of early Christianity. Contemporaries, they became followers of Jesus very differently, though they reportedly met the same end, martyred by Nero in Rome. At the time Jesus began his ministry Peter was a fisherman who apparently fished with his brother Andrew and their partners James and John. Based on the fact he was sometimes called Simon, or Simon Peter, he was likely not simply an Aramaic-speaking Jew but rather one who knew at least some Greek as well as Aramaic and perhaps Hebrew. Peter is believed to have lived in Capernaum on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee where he and his brother and their friends fished. Poet's don't typically compete for “coolest book cover,” and it's probably because Zbigniew Herbert won years ago. Today's poem is his tender look at poverty, pleasure, and irretrievable loss. Zbigniew Herbert was born on October 29, 1924, in Poland in the city of Lvov, which is now a part of the Ukraine. His grandfather was an Englishman who settled in Lvov to teach English. His father, a former member of the Legions that had fought for restoration of Poland's independence, was a bank manager. Herbert's formal education began in Lvov and continued under German occupation in the form of clandestine study at the underground King John Casimir University, where he majored in Polish literature. He was a member of the underground resistance movement. In 1944, he moved to Krakow, and three years later he graduated from the University of Krakow with a master's degree in economics. He also received a law degree from Nicholas Copernicus University in Torun and studied philosophy at the University of Warsaw under Henryk Elzenberg.During the 1950s, Herbert worked at many low-paying jobs because he refused to write within the framework of official Communist guidelines. After widespread riots against Soviet control in 1956 brought about a political “thaw,” Herbert became an administrator at the Union of Polish Composers and published his first collection, Struna swiatla [The Chord of Light] (Czytelnik, 1956). The book immediately placed him among the most prominent representatives of the “Contemporaries” (young poets and writers associated with the weekly Contemporary Times). In 1957, Herbert published his second collection of verse, Hermes, pies i gwiazda [Hermes, the Dog and the Star] (Czytelnik). Four years later, he published his third book of poems, Studium przedmiotu [Study of the Object] (Czytelnik, 1961). In 1968, his Selected Poems, translated into English by Czeslaw Milosz and Peter Dale Scott, was released in both the United States and England, making Herbert one of the most popular contemporary poets in the English-speaking world. In 1971, he released the first Polish edition of Selected Poems.Herbert's 1983 collection, Raport z oblezonego miasta i inne wiersze [Report from the Besieged City] (Instytut Literacki), dealt with the ethical problems Poland faced while under martial law. The book was issued simultaneously through an emigré publishing house and as an underground edition in Poland. He also published a number of essay collections and works of drama. In 1962, he released his famous work, Barbarzyńca wogrodzie [Barbarian in the Garden] (Czytelnik), which was eventually translated into numerous languages.Herbert's numerous awards include the Kościelski Foundation Prize, the Austrian Lenau Prize, the Alfred Jurzykowski Prize, the Herder Prize, the Petrarch Prize, the Bruno Schulz Prize, and the Jerusalem Prize for the Freedom of the Individual in Society.Herbert was a coeditor of the poetry journal Poezja from 1965 to 1968 but resigned in protest of antisemitic policies. He traveled widely throughout the West and lived in Paris, Berlin, and the United States, where he taught briefly at the University of California, Los Angeles. He died in Warsaw on July 28, 1998.-bio via Academy of American Poets This is a public episode. What does it mean to be called an “upstart crow”? In 1592, a pamphlet titled Greene's groats-worth of witte described William Shakespeare, in the first allusion to him as a playwright, with this phrase, calling him “an upstart crow, beautified with our feathers.” This phrase sparked centuries of speculation. As Darren Freebury-Jones explores in his book, Shakespeare's borrowed feathers: How early modern playwrights shaped the world's greatest writer, Shakespeare's so-called borrowing was neither unusual for the time nor a weakness—it was ultimately a testament to his genius. Exploring how Shakespeare navigated a competitive theatrical scene in early modern England, Freebury-Jones reveals the ways in which Shakespeare reshaped the works of contemporaries like John Lyly, Thomas Kyd, and Christopher Marlowe into something distinctly his own. By combining traditional literary analysis with cutting-edge digital tools, he uncovers echoes of Lyly's witty comedies and gender-bending heroines, Kyd's tragic revenge dramas, and Marlowe's powerful verse in Shakespeare's early plays. This episode sheds light on Shakespeare's role as a responsive and innovative playwright deeply embedded in the early modern theatrical community. Listen in to learn more about the influences on the “upstart crow” as he created a canon of timeless works. Dr Darren Freebury-Jones is author of the monographs: Reading Robert Greene: Recovering Shakespeare's Rival (Routledge), Shakespeare's Tutor: The Influence of Thomas Kyd (Manchester University Press), and Shakespeare's Borrowed Feathers (Manchester University Press). He is Associate Editor for the first critical edition of The Collected Works of Thomas Kyd since 1901 (Boydell and Brewer). He has also investigated the boundaries of John Marston's dramatic corpus as part of the Oxford Marston project and is General Editor for The Collected Plays of Robert Greene (Edinburgh University Press). His findings on the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries have been discussed in national newspapers such as The Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Observer, and The Independent as well as BBC Radio. His debut poetry collection, Rambling (Broken Sleep Books), was published in 2024. In 2023 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in recognition of his contributions to historical scholarship.

Artist and sculptor Permindar Kaur moves between the Black British Arts Movement, the Young British Artists (YBAs), and Barcelona in the 1990s, exploring the ambiguities of Indian and South Asian cultural identities, Nothing is Fixed is an idea that has grown from Permindar Kaur's 2022 exhibition at The Art House in Wakefield. For their latest, in Southampton, the artist brings together the public and the private, transforming the various gallery spaces into bedrooms of a home. Beds, chairs, tables, and teddy bears - ambiguous, often unsettling, domestic objects - populate the space, as well as never-before-shown works on paper, which underline the role of drawing in their sculptural practice. Born in Britain to Sikh parents of Indian heritage, Permindar is often exhibited in the context of the Black British Arts Movement, showing with leading members of Blk Art Group like Eddie Chambers. The artist also describes their wider interactions with the YBAs, exhibitions in Japan, and influences from their formative years of practice in Barcelona, Spain, Canada, and Sweden. We discuss encounters with artists like Mona Hatoum and Eva Hesse, Helen Chadwick and Félix González-Torres, and more surrealist storytellers like Leonora Carrington and Paula Rego, alongside the material-focussed practices of Arte Povera. We trouble the category of ‘British Asian artists', exploring Permindar's work with and within particular Indian and Punjabi diasporic communities in Nottingham, Sheffield, and Glasgow, in Scotland. With series like Turbans, Permindar describes how their practice has changed over time, navigating questions of identity, representation, and the binary of non-/Western/European art practices. They share their research on a site-specific public sculpture for Southampton's yearly Mela Festival, a long-established event which represents, rather than ‘reclaims' space for, different South Asian cultures - and lifelong learning, from younger artists. Permindar Kaur: Nothing is Fixed ran at John Hansard Gallery in Southampton until September 2024, closing with the launch of an exhibition book of the same name, supported by Jhaveri Contemporary in Mumbai. Sculpture in the Park is on view at Compton Verney in Warwickshire until 2027. Kaur also presented work in A Spirit Inside, an exhibition of works from the Women's Art Collection and the Ingram Collection, at Compton Verney until September 2024. New York–born Greg Krelenstein, cofounder of global creative studio gk-ld, lets his instinct for what's contemporary guide his matching of talent to brands, magazines, and collaborative projects. Formerly a third of the DJ collective The Misshapes, he also directed editorial operations at fashion and communications agency Starworks Groups for 14 years before establishing his agency with partner Lisa Duckworth. Krelenstein is a force in the fashion world, renowned for his ability to shape and direct the images of celebrities and brands, whether they are at the cutting edge of the zeitgeist or were famous decades ago and are seeking a comeback. “A mother hen to young indie stars” and “permanently 12 months ahead,” Krelenstein is an industry visionary with innate instincts for fashion and culture shifts and modes—and the wisdom to take a moment to get a sense of what feels right. Episode Highlights Born in Brooklyn and raised in suburban New Jersey, Krelenstein grew up visiting the city and eventually pursued a communications and media degree at NYU. As interested in celebrities on magazine covers as those working behind the scenes to produce the shoots, his first passion was not for the fashion world but for film and music. Krelenstein was the editorial director at Starworks for 14 years before opening gk-ld with partner Lisa Duckworth. He started in film publicity, working with niche magazines and organically growing his clientele to form gk-ld as an industry insider.   Krelenstein sets his ideas apart by taking chances and choosing collaborations, celebrities, and situations that represent something fresh within magazines developing unique identities. On maintaining decades-long obsessions with certain celebrities, Krelenstein remarks that past monocultures inscribe them in the collective mind, and that peoples' current attention spans are so short that re-referencing and “comebacks” have social capital.  Krelenstein says he intends to create overall images as an image director rather than cater to trends.  At an auspicious age, Krelenstein can understand the importance and use of both print and digital operations.  Talking about his experience with the #mycalvins campaign, Krelenstein says the ads that you really remember are the ones that appear to be produced from a genuine creative mindset by the designers in the house—and that he's excited by proximity to those productions. His metric for success is when talents experience their own organic growth, in addition to brand alignment; he calls himself both a psychiatrist to some talent and a kind of cultural anthropologist.  Emphasizing the importance of trusting his instincts, he states that what's contemporary now is taking a moment to breathe and get a sense of “what feels right.”  Learn more about your ad choices.
