It's the latest conversation in a series from Talking Sense, an election-year project from MPR News that aims to help Minnesotans have hard political conversations ... better. The workshop was led by Braver Angels' Co-Founder Bill Doherty and participants included conservatives, liberals and independents. In 2009 – against the backdrop of the Great Recession – more than 50 trailblazing students walked through the hallowed halls of the Galleria Mall at University Square, up a rickety escalator to a space that used to serve as a movie theater to guinea pig a new and novel approach to Higher Education in the 21st century. Native American students are just a tiny fraction of all the college students in the United States. And each student comes with different histories, confronting an education system once used to erase their languages and cultures. MPR News with Angela Davis is sharing a new documentary from American Public Media, “Standing in Two Worlds: Native American College Diaries.” Meet three Indigenous college students with Minnesota ties. They are using a college education to support their communities, and themselves, without losing sight of who they are. Archie Yellow: Archie is a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and studies Ojibwe at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. Nevaeh Nez: Nevaeh is a Hopi and Navajo student at the University of Minnesota-Rochester who's planning to go to medical school. Reuben Kitto Stately: Reuben is Dakhóta from the Santee Sioux Nation and a tribal member of Red Lake Nation who majored in American Indian Studies at Augsburg University. Thought leaders in higher education have been concerned about the future of higher education. Dr. Robert Zemsky and Dr. Lori Carrell both agree that to prevent schools from closure, higher education needs to be revitalized. In this episode, Dr. Jason Altmire talks with Dr. Robert Zemsky of the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Lori Carrell of the University of Minnesota Rochester about the market viability of undergraduate institutions and the strategies they must take to thrive. Dr. Zemsky and Dr. Carrell co-wrote the book Communication for a Change: Revitalizing Conversations for Higher Education. In our discussion, they share ways that communication can most effectively bring change to higher education institutions. When Dr. Stephen Lehmkuhle became the chancellor of the brand-new University of Minnesota-Rochester campus, he had to start from scratch. There was no legacy mission, no physical campus, no academic programs, no athletic teams and so on. Lehmkuhle quickly realized that his first and most important act was to confirm the central organizing purpose of the campus. In our conversation, Stephen shares what it takes to build a campus from scratch. According to this seasoned educator, even for those who work on campuses with long histories and enduring missions, a renewed focus on campus purpose can inspire new and fresh ways of thinking about the many elements of campus operation and function that we take for granted. Stephen Lemkuhle is the author of the recent book, Campus with Purpose: Building a Mission-Driven Campus, a book that tells the story of the creation of the University of Minnesota-Rochester where he served as inaugural Chancellor.
