Darren spent his early adulthood working in the steel industry, eventually landing him in Calgary Alberta. During this time Darren and friend Graham Dunlop started The Grimerica Podcast, an interview podcast about all the things they and their podcast community find interesting in the world, which helped lead him to many, many rabbit holes. Today Darren raises two young daughters in Alberta, Canada, working as a podcast host, author and entrepreneur. Darren spends a lot of time with his family and hunting and fishing.. His skeptical approach to the phenomena investigated on The Grimerica Show is tempered by his libertarian leanings, though this combination frequently leads him to crush the dreams of anyone looking for a high-rated synchronicity. Working in high steel construction has given him the privilege of having a bird's-eye perspective on a variety of subject matter, both literally and figuratively. His avoidance of cameras has nothing to do with paranoia, taking his picture will, very literally, steal his soul. Someday, Darren hopes to bust a few caps in Sasquatch, while he has more than a few caps swirling around in his own head. He is not as clean and sober as Graham. About Graham Dunlop Graham's primary passions are podcasting, researching, and helping others. Obsessed with learning and self-improvement, Graham and Darren started The Grimerica Podcast in 2013. Their show has continued to grow into a sizable and loving community. Most recently he's pursued a spin-off podcast, Grimerica Outlawed, and has narrated various audiobooks. A fast-paced life of corporate ladder climbing and competitive sports eventually took its toll, and Graham got completely clean and sober in 2008. Every year since then has been an escalating pursuit into the esoteric, occult, and spiritual arenas. Somewhere along the way he found time to travel around the world, become a Reiki master, get certified in Addiction Studies, facilitate Buddhist meditative recovery meetings, coach hockey, and lead numerous CE-5 expeditions (Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind). His journey has been one of achievement and compassion. Other professional management experiences includes Operations Manager at Premsteel Fabricators and several director positions with ACRO Aerospace: Director of Business Excellence, Director of Technical Services, and Director of Purchasing. However Graham's current focus is on raising his awareness, and enjoying living outside the city with the love of his life, Marija. In what spare time he has, he makes his mark in the imagination of others with the unparalleled skill of Dungeon Master Supreme.

A subset of adolescents who use substances develop substance use disorders later in life, and some even develop harmful patterns of drinking while still in the developmental stage of adolescence. Why is substance use initiation likely in this age group, and what is the developmental function of substance use behavior? What are the interpersonal processes that influence substance use, and how do relationships with friends and family change during this critical developmental stage? Is it possible to leverage these interpersonal processes to bolster treatment initiation and success? Dr. Sam Meisel answers these questions and more as he discusses the complex social environment of the adolescent and it's pertinence to understanding substance use.   Viv, aka Sober iThrive interviews Dr Peg O'Connor on her book "Higher and Friendly Powers" This is an amazing interview and we graciously thank Dr O'Connor for coming on the Sobertown Podcast and sharing her amazing insights and wisdom!!   Interview with Peg O'Connor, Professor of Philosophy, Specializing in Feminist, Social, Political Philosophy and Addiction Studies, and Author of: “HIGHER AND FRIENDLY POWERS TRANSFORMING ADDICTION AND SUFFERING HIGHER” An expansive alternative for those who have AND FRIENDiv struggled with the "higher power" of AA's 12-step POWERS program, Higher and Friendly Powers (Wildhouse Publications / August 24, 2022) offers a sense of human decency, moral ideals, and even a better version of oneself. In Higher and Friendly Powers, Peg O'Connor, PEG O CONNOR PhD, addresses an audience much like herself: those in recovery who have struggled with the Christian-centric God at the heart of Alcoholics Anonymous. She brings our attention to a little-known fact: the term "higher power," a touchstone in the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, was coined by William James, philosopher, psychologist, and intellectual giant of the early 20 century. By acting as our personal field guide through the world of William James, Peg shows that "higher power" as James conceived it is far more expansive than we might imagine. The book, which combines Peg's deep personal wisdom with James's adventurous intellect, has the power to transform the way we live.   ABOUT THE AUTHOR: 1 Peg O'Connor, Ph.D., is a Professor of Philosophy at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. • Her training is in moral philosophy, feminist philosophy, addiction studies, and the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein. She believes that philosophy helped her to get and remain sober. Avoiding Alcoholics Anonymous for the first 20 years of her sobriety because of the concept of a "higher power," she is focused on using some of the great canonical thinkers in western philosophy to illuminate dimensions of addiction. She further shares this in her new book, Higher and Friendly Powers: Transforming Addiction and Suffering (Wildhouse Publications, August 2022). Dr. O'Connor is also the author of Life on the Rocks: Finding Meaning in Addiction and Recovery (Central Recovery Press, 2016), Morality and Our Complicated Form of Life: Feminist Wittgensteinian Metaethics (Penn State, 2008), and Oppression and Responsibility: A Wittgensteinian Approach to Social Practices and Moral Theory (Penn State, 2002). A co-editor to multiple other titles, she is regularly published in trade journals and writes a column, Philosophy Stirred, Not Shaken, for Psychology Today, which has nearly two million total views online and select columns have appeared in the print publication. Dr. O'Connor's expertise has been featured on BBC's Free Thinking and Canadian Public Radio's On Drugs podcast, as well as in print and online publications ranging from The New York Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Cosmo and Marie Claire to Vice and Kinfolk. She has been invited to present on addiction and recovery at some of the country's most prestige universities, in addition to workshops and talks in church basements, classrooms, community centers, and treatment centers. Dr. Peg O'Connor is a recovering alcoholic who maintains that philosophy got and helped her to stay sober. For the last twelve years, she has shifted the focus of her work to using some of the great canonical thinkers in western philosophy to illuminate dimensions of addiction. She understands addiction as a meaning of life problem and no discipline is as well suited as philosophy to address meaning of life questions.   Peg O'Conner's Website: https://pegoconnorauthor.com/ Amazon: Higher and Friendly Powers   Viv, aka Sober_iThrive, is a Certified Addictions Recovery Coach  https://www.soberithrive.org My communities are:   • Sobertownpodcast.com   • I Am Sober Community (IAS) - @Sober_iThrive  • Sobertown Facebook Group   • “Valiants We Thrive” – Sober Women Telegram Group  • Instagram: @Sober_i_Thrive    No Sippy No Slippy. Clinical and life coach Mollie Birney shares the habits of healthy couples that you, too, can apply to strengthen your relationships. Tune in to this episode: Habits of Healthy Couples with Mollie Birney. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ Words are powerful. Give casual compliments. Acknowledge your partner's help and every instance they do something right. ✔️ Requests and responses matter. Make requests of each other. Respond to them from a place of service, not of sacrifice. If it's not a clear yes, then it's a no. ✔️ Healthy couples have difficult conversations. They share hard truths and lead these talks with concern. Establish trust to avoid leaving dark and untouched topics. Be more curious about the root of issues than the symptom. ✔️ Give each other feedback. Affirm your partner when they respect your boundaries and make an effort to improve. ✔️ Start from awareness. If you make a mistake, don't beat yourself up for it. Notice it without judgment. Be curious as to why you keep repeating these bad habits. ———————————————————————————————— Mollie Birney is a Clinical Coach in private practice, she provides life coaching with an eye toward mental health to high-achieving professionals seeking efficient, authentic transitions and behavioral change. Hey Guys! Remember when we talked in Season One about going to therapy? Well into today's episode we wanted to go a bit more in-depth and specifically talk about dealing with unresolved childhood trauma. In previous episodes, Danielle has talked about how being molested as a child has taken a toll on her relationship with herself and others. She's had issues with self-esteem and unhealthy relationships with food stemming from her hatred for herself. Over the past few years, she has been on a journey to heal herself and be happy from the inside. She realized that in order to live the life she wants, she had to deal with her demons head-on. Mel has had a share of issues that she's had to let go of herself and is still working to get over. As a mother, she wants to make sure her kids thrive in a healthy environment, but sometimes she struggles with making sure she's not damaging them herself. To discuss this we have Devin A. White. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker currently working at a middle school in central Jersey. He is serving students in grades 6-8 facilitating individual, group, and family therapy services. Devin also works with couples families and individuals part-time in a local private practice. Devin has been working with youth and families since 2010 and has been providing clinical services since 2016. Devin holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Morehouse College, a Master's in Social Work from Rutgers University-New Brunswick with a concentration on Addiction Studies, and is pursuing his EdD in Organizational Leadership from Northeastern University. The seeds of a satisfying retirement are planted before it begins. And the disruption of the last two years have underscored the importance of several things that perhaps we took for granted. Brooks _______________________ Wise Quotes On Transitioning to Retirement "...The other thing about this is to really understand that it is a chapter. It's a transition, it's not a moment in time. Some people could be retired as long as their work life. Just like in developmental theory, there probably is an early middle and late retirement. It's not one thing. A retired 60 year old is real different than a retired 80 year old. And there's a difference about seeing it as a transition versus a cliff. And I think for those people, for whom retirement is a cliff, it's very, very hard. They go into anonymity. They feel that society doesn't value their wisdom, their input, and they feel really sidelined. And I think for people who can transition, who have the physical, mental, and financial resources, to make this a rich time, to reinvent themselves, whether that be volunteer work or different kinds of paid employment, they have a much easier time of it. It comes back to having a cohort group, a community of people who support you in going through a transition. We need to understand it's not: One day I was working the next day, I'm retired. It's really: I'm transitioning." On Getting Your House In Order "It's something to plan for and to think about. Is it something you want to stop cold turkey? Or do you want to see if you can negotiate some kind of part-time transition, so that you can kind of put your toe in the water or begin to think about how you will restructure your life when the structure is up to you? I would say another deficit, frankly, for many Americans is because we are so work-identity-focused. Many people don't invest in extracurriculars, hobbies, relationships, and so they don't naturally have other things to do, even though they might say, Oh, I've always been interested in X. If you haven't invested the time, I would spend a year before retirement trying some of those things out and seeing, is that really true? Does it hold my interest as much as I think it might? Or could I start to volunteer someplace and, and create some other relationships, so when I lose my work colleagues, there are other people who know me and whom I know and care about and have in my life? But I think thinking ahead is essential for people to get their houses in order, in terms of all of the legal thinking about the very hard questions. And I think some people are just very superstitious. They won't do a will because then they think they're gonna die.

Its surveys, investigations, publications, and substantial presence on the Internet provides critical information on substance abuse issues to policymakers, healthcare professionals as well as families and individuals coping with addiction. Dr. Rosenthal has served as a White House advisor on drug abuse, a special consultant to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, chairman of the New York State Advisory Council on Drug Abuse, and president of the American Association of Psychoanalytic Physicians. He is a lecturer in psychiatry at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Rosenthal is a psychiatrist whose research, clinical skills, and advocacy have produced model treatment protocols, widely replicated throughout the country and abroad. His pioneering efforts in substance abuse treatment date from his work at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, California (1965-1967), where he formed the first service-sponsored therapeutic community for the treatment of addiction. As deputy commissioner of New York City's Addiction Services Agency, he created the Phoenix House citywide network of treatment facilities in 1967. In 1972, he resigned his city post to become president of the now independent Phoenix House Foundation and oversee the national expansion of its treatment and prevention services over the following three and a half decades. Dr. Rosenthal earned his B.A. from Lafayette College and his M.D. from the State University of New York's Downstate Medical Center. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, deputy chair of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, and serves on the board of the Partnership for Drug Free Kids and Delancey Street Foundation.

Sober Steve is back for episode 2. I have an education background and now that I'm off drugs I can finally finish my degrees. There are two degrees that are to e continued. Those degrees being in Environmental Science and Journalism. The 106/120 credits I need for my degrees might however be a prerequisite for a different degree I want first now. Addiction Studies, so I can be a counselor. I think I'd be great at it, for a lot of reasons, but I bring it up all that up because I have an education background but I also spent 13 years on very hard drugs doing trying to get clean for 13 years and I have tried pretty much all drugs and I have tried pretty much all the ways to get off drugs. My story is crazy. I have some pretty funny stories, super crazy stories and some very sad stories that we'll get to but I really want to educate with my experience first. How I got clean, what I went through trying to get clean, the hoops I jumped through. The sickness and hopelessness I felt for so long will not be in vain, I fought out of that life to inspire others.Episode 2 is about the 5 opiate treatment program drugs. Vivitrol, Methadone, Subutex, Suboxone, Sublocade have all be prescribed to me and when I could I bought them off the streets. This is everything I know about each and what I recommend. Remember, the treatment drugs are not enough alone to keep you off drugs. The real work is on yourself, your mind, your way of thinking and who you want to be. "The opposite of addiction is connection." So connect with positive people.
