The Power of Neurofeedback on Brain Health What if the key to unlocking peak performance, healing trauma, and overcoming anxiety didn't lie in medication — but in rewiring your brain itself? In this episode of Richer Soul, we dive deep with Melissa Hergert, CEO of BrainTrain Centers, who went from being born in a homeless shelter to leading a growing mental wellness empire. Her story is a powerful testimony to the strength of mindset, the science of neurofeedback, and the journey from survival to abundance. Melissa reveals how neurofeedback therapy is changing lives — from kids with ADHD to veterans with PTSD, and even aging adults battling memory loss. This episode is a must-listen for anyone ready to take control of their mental fitness and unlock their full potential. Key Takeaways: Neurofeedback Rewires, Not Just Reframes. It works on your brain's physical processing patterns, not just your thoughts — helping with ADHD, anxiety, trauma, and more. Trauma, Nutrition, and Environment Are Root Causes. Many “disorders” are just symptoms of deeper issues like unresolved trauma or sugar-laden diets. AI Is the Future — Even in Therapy. Melissa is building AI-powered phone assistants to educate potential clients — showing that automation and empathy can co-exist. Healing Starts at Home. From what you feed your kids to the environment they grow up in, brain health starts with daily decisions. Money Learning from Melissa: Melissa grew up thinking money was only for survival — you work, you pay bills, repeat. Abundance was never part of the equation. But today, she's rewiring not just her brain, but her financial beliefs. She's learned the importance of respecting money, building an emergency fund, and breaking the generational cycle of scarcity. Her biggest financial advice to young adults? Build good credit and remember: college is not the only path to success. About Melissa Hergert: Melissa Hergert is the CEO and visionary behind BrainTrain Centers, a national leader in neurofeedback therapy and mental health. With a Master's in Addiction Counseling, Melissa blends clinical insight with entrepreneurial innovation. Her centers help children, veterans, professionals, and seniors achieve better brain function and emotional regulation. Melissa is also a speaker, wellness advocate, and devoted mom of two. Key Discussion Points: Why she started her business using a $4,000 student loan check. How operant conditioning via Netflix and sensors is changing therapy. What peak brain performance looks like for pro athletes like Tiger Woods. The role of heart rate variability and breathwork in mental clarity. When medication and neurofeedback work together, not apart. Why the first question she asks is about goals, not symptoms. What neuroplasticity really means — and how it changes lives. Why parents should skip the cereal and start kids on protein breakfasts. How she uses ChatGPT to explain complex science to her clients. Powerful stories of transformation: from non-verbal kids to adults reclaiming purpose. Conclusion: Melissa Hergert proves that your past does not define your potential. Through science, strategy, and heart, she's helping people reprogram their brains — and their lives. Whether you're a parent, entrepreneur, or someone looking to reclaim mental clarity, this episode offers hope, tools, and a roadmap to transformation. Have you or someone you love ever struggled with figuring out how cannabis and addiction counseling or recovery can co-exist? In this episode, I sat down with Suzanne, a former cannabis user turned counselor for recovering addicts. Her story takes an unexpected turn when she rediscovers the benefits of cannabis after facing numerous health challenges. Suzanne shares her journey from smoking cannabis in college to quitting when she and her husband decided to start a family. After becoming a mother, she dedicated her career to helping others overcome addiction, working with individuals on probation and parole. However, life took an unexpected turn when Suzanne was diagnosed with a brain tumor and developed seizures, among other health issues. Despite her struggles, she resisted using medicinal marijuana due to her work with recovering addicts. It wasn't until June of last year, when she lost her beloved dog Sela that she turned to cannabis for relief. The results were remarkable – Suzanne hasn't experienced a seizure since November 9th, 2022. As her health improves, she looks forward to regaining her independence and embarking on the newest chapter of her life. Join us as we discuss the power of medicinal marijuana, its role in Suzanne's journey to wellness, and the importance of staying open-minded when it comes to alternative treatments. The podcast episode discusses the recent decriminalization of cannabis in Thailand and its potential impact on public health. Lee Hawker-Lecesne, the lead therapist and addiction counselor at The Cabin, a rehab center in Thailand, shares his personal story of experiencing trauma and seeking therapy, which led him to pursue a career in addiction counseling. Addiction Unlimited Podcast | Alcoholism | Life Coach | Living Sober | 12 Steps
Addiction Unlimited just turned 5! And to celebrate this journey that has been fulfilling and rewarding beyond my wildest dreams, I thought we would go back to day 1. At least once a week I get messages from people who are looking for episode zero, About Me. Keep in mind as you listen, my editing skills have come a long way, lol. This is Episode 0, About Me. I wanted to share some information about myself so you know who you are listening to and why I do what I do. In a nutshell, I got sober on January 7, 2006 after crashing my car at 70mph and hitting another car. That was my rock bottom moment. And, don't get things confused. My rock bottom moment was low, but I was high-functioning. Like many of you out there struggling, I could rationalize all the reasons I didn't need to quit drinking. I had a good job, I made a lot of money, I lived in a beautiful place with a super expensive car in the garage, and, from the outside, it looked like I had it all together. But that's the funny thing about 'rock bottom', people think rock bottom is an event, but it's really a feeling. So, I quit drinking and focused all my energy on building a new life. When I started to see all the changes happening to me and saw myself growing into an amazing sober, honest, upstanding person, I knew that all I wanted to do was help others get that same feeling of loving themselves, trusting themselves, and feeling proud of who they are becoming. I got certified as a Life Coach, I did a 2 year Addiction Counseling program, started building a practice as a Professional Interventionist, went to social work school, and worked full-time to achieve 6000 supervised hours for my counseling credentials in a neighboring state. My journey has taken a lot of twists and turns. I've struggled with self-esteem, relationships, money, food and weight issues on top of anxiety, workaholism, and a plethora of other things! I want to share with you all the things I've tried and all the mistakes I've made so I can tell you what works, and what doesn't. This episode is a brief insight into me, my quirks, and my love of f-bombs. We are celebrating and recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility with a deep and meaningful conversation with Beck Gee. Beck's superpower is using his platform to speak out about issues of social justice. International Transgender Day of Visibility (often referred to as TDOV or Trans Day of Visibility) is an annual event dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide, as well as a celebration of their contributions to society. The event began in 2009 as a reaction to the lack of LGBTQ+ recognition of transgender people, citing the frustration that the only well-known transgender-centered day was the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which mourned the murders of transgender people but did not acknowledge and celebrate living members of the transgender community. The first International Transgender Day of Visibility was held on March 31, 2009. ______________________________________ Resources: // The Trevor Project: If you are thinking about harming yourself — get immediate support. Alcohol and other drugs are sometimes accompanied by harms from use. However, use only accounts for some of the variance in substance use harms, and their are strategies, and harms can be reduced through other means aside from reductions in substance use. This is particularly important because many who use substances do not have a desire to quit or cut down on their use, even if they do experience harms. In this episode, Dr. Mark Prince discusses the literature on protective behavioral strategies, or any behavioral strategy that may reduce the harm of substance use, often through reduction of risky behaviors while using (i.e., drinking and driving) or through changes in the way the substance is consumed (i.e., drinking water in between alcoholic drinks). Dr. Prince is an Associate Professor and the Associate Director of Addiction Counseling in the Department of Psychology at Colorado State University. Click here for Dr. Prince's paper quantifying the variance unexplained by alcohol consumption alone.

Episode 28: How your fears are keeping you from achieving success We all fear failure. It's human nature. However, our fear of failing can envelop us at times and hold us back from achieving success in life. Sometimes, it is the little fears that sneak up on us when we least expect it. Other times, it is the big fears that paralyze us so completely than any progress feels impossible. If you're constantly feeling fear, you might just be one of the millions around the world who are limiting themselves because they are scared. Fear is that thing that tells us not to take risks or try something new. Fear is that voice in our heads telling us all the reasons why we can't do something. The power of fear is a powerful thing. Many people will cite it as their greatest obstacle to overcoming the challenges in their life, and recognition of that power can be seen throughout history. It's the reason why we see people with fears hold back in life, keeping them from achieving success and surpassing expectations. Everyone has fears — and we all know that they don't go away on their own. You need to take action and face your fears if you want to live a meaningful life. Shirley Paniagua, is a LCDC-I Counselor and a graduate of Applied Science in Human Services in Addiction Counseling. She went back to school and earned her High School and College diplomas and throughout her studies, she earned the Scholastic Leadership Award. She is now pursuing a BAAS in social work. Together with Shirley, in this episode, we are going to discuss how your decisions influenced your life significantly and how to overcome your fears and create success in your life. In this episode, you'll learn: Shirley's life journey and the obstacles she overcame The impact that drug addiction has caused on her life How our decisions influenced how we live our lives Why decisions are meaningless in the absence of action The significance of self-care, particularly for women How our choices may be affected by the environment in which we live Why you should not allow your fears stop you from doing what is right for you Resources mentioned: Blueprint for Progress: Al-Anon's Fourth Step Inventory by Al-Anon Family Groups I Never Knew I Had a Choice: Explorations in Personal Growth by Gerald Corey and Marianne Corey Get in Touch with Shirley Paniagua: Email

This episode is about the opioid epidemic and how the pandemic is impacting those battling addiction. A new CDC report just released finds the number of overdose deaths reached one hundred thousand. That's the largest single year toll ever recorded. The study looked at deaths from April 2020, the beginning of the pandemic, until April 21. Ohio is no stranger to the opioid epidemic and in past years has been one of the leading states for drug overdose deaths in the nation. Experts say the current overdose deaths are largely from fentanyl in meth and cocaine. Ohio saw a near 27 percent increase overdose deaths. The state recently started a "Beat the Stigma" education marketing campaign and Ohio received $24 million from the recent opioid settlement from one drug company earlier this year. But what will it take to get control of a problem that seems to be once again spiraling out of control. To help sort through it, I gathered a panel of experts in the field. She fell in love and pursued formal education in Human Services, Mental Health, and Addiction Counseling, but always felt something was missing with traditional approaches. After years of traveling, immersing in cultures, and work with diverse populations including Veterans, Involuntary Psychiatric Patients, Domestic Violence Victims and Perpetrators, and Substance Abusers, she was led to the transformational work she does today. ⠀⠀⠀
