Join Tiffany and Kevin on this episode of "On The Record" as they sit down with special guest Reginald Ballard to discuss the urgent need for innovation in the pharmaceutical industry and the importance of acknowledging progress made in the fight against Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). As the Texas Kidney Foundation (TKF) continues to lead the charge in early detection, education, and support, Reginal shares his insights on the power of community and the importance of amplifying positive stories. Don't miss this thought-provoking conversation on the future of healthcare and the impact of proactive approaches to addressing CKD. About the Texas Kidney Foundation: Texas Kidney Foundation (TKF) is dedicated to the early detection of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Because we know the difficulties that go along with CKD, we use a proactive approach to address the disease. We believe early detection, education, and support will help Texans maintain their quality of life. TKF began because there was a need for patient services in the San Antonio and Rio Grande Valley regions because the local chapter of the nation's largest kidney foundation closed its doors and left the area. Unfortunately, they didn't take kidney disease with them. Luckily a tenacious transplant physician, Francis Wright, MD decided to create a foundation that would stand strong to serve our community, Texas Kidney Foundation (TKF). He gathered together a board of civic-minded people with a connection to renal disease. TKF has continued in that tradition. In 2017 under new leadership TKF began to emerge as a state and national leader within the Kidney space. TKF embarked on the first leg of a statewide campaign called the Kidney C.A.R.E. (Clinician and Adult Renal Education) Campaign. The campaign addresses the lack of knowledge about CKD because the disease is overwhelming families all over Texas. According to the Center for Disease Control, 1 out of 3 adults with diabetes have CKD. Every day in the U.S. 130 diabetics begin treatment for kidney failure. TKF is the voice leading the charge to stop the CKD pandemic. January 8, 2020, The State of Texas reestablished the previously abolished Texas Chronic Kidney Disease Task Force.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's guest is Kathy Maresca (Porch Music, Touch Point Press, October 2022) In her debut novel, set in 1950's Gainesville Florida, Kathy utilized stories from her Seminole family history to tap into a story of racial inequities, Southern culture, country music, and religious hypocrisy. Her research included not only books and museums, but also her own memories of working at Six Gun Territory, a local theme park, and absorbing the rhythm of Native American dances. When it came to marketing, her most effective tool turned out to be contests, where she used her awards to publicize her book. Her least effective? A blog tour which failed to correctly target her ideal reader. A native Floridian, Kathy Maresca grew up with a grandmother of Seminole heritage. Kathy served in the Air Force, working at the Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel and then in special operations at Hurlburt Field, Florida. She edited for the University of Florida and taught English, journalism, and drama. While she was teaching, Kathy became ill with trigeminal neuralgia. She then earned a master's degree, became credentialed as a rehabilitation counselor, and served as the Director of Patient Services for the Trigeminal Neurgalgia Association. Kathy recently finished her second novel, Sky Kiss, and is working on a prequel to Porch Music. She has been a Guardian ad Litem and has taught classes for a prison fellowship ministry. Kathy lives in North Carolina with her husband, Keith. They enjoy traveling and spending time with their toy fox terriers. To learn more about Kathy, click here.

As a legal nurse consultant, when you go through medical records, you may see indications that an ethics consult was called or that ethical issues were considered. You may also find yourself struggling with aspects of the decisions made regarding the patient and feel the need of advice from an expert in medical ethics. Camille Renella opens the door to this little-understood aspect of medicine. She begins by pointing out that ethics has lower regard than the law in terms of application simply because legal violations generate so many more repercussions. At an earlier time, doctors and administrative personnel didn't even want to deal with issues like setting up ethics committees in their institutions. Today no formal qualifications exist for sitting on such a committee. In contrast, medical ethicists receive formal, usually post-doctoral, education in their field. They look at those who are working around the patient and consider the standard of care and code of ethics of each group of practitioners and how their application of these values can benefit the patient. The need for a clinical medical ethicist particularly arises in continuation of life issues. This can involve conflicts between family members and clinical staff, issues around advanced directives, and other considerations. Camille raises important ethical and practical issues in this informative podcast. It will broaden your perspective about what is involved in medical decisions. Join me in this episode of Ethical Dilemmas in Healthcare: Insights from a Medical Ethicist with Camille Renella What does a medical ethicist do? What are the requirements for sitting on an ethics committee? How do issues of life support get involved with ethics? How do hospital and medical costs impact ethics decisions? Nikki was an oncology nurse practitioner for 15 years in the Chicago area. Nikki relocated to Nevada and began volunteering with the Nevada Affiliate. Nikki's journey with pancreatic cancer started when her brother-in-law was diagnosed in February 2014 and died in November that year. She made a promise to him that she would continue the fight and work on bettering the outcome for patients and for families. She continued his fight by first volunteering with the Nevada Affiliate and later retiring from nursing to go on to her now position with PanCAN as a Case Manager with their Patient Services. Nikki connects with newly diagnosed patients and their families, provides them with information and resources allowing them to make informed decisions. The high number of mental health care users requiring care, the quick turnover in psychiatric hospitals and the scarcity of community-based mental health services are some of the factors that have led to a dramatic increase in the number of high frequency users of in-patient psychiatric services. In an attempt to address these issues, an occupational therapy-led day treatment center was established at Stikland Hospital in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The aim of this study was to determine whether attendance at an occupational therapy-led community day treatment center for mental health care users affects the use of in-patient services in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

Agi and Ron met by chance when Agi's father coached Ron's son's soccer team. Little did they know that on that day they would meet, fall in love and marry 3 months later. Ron was a real dynamite of a man, they balanced each other immediately. Ron was a thinker and Agi was a doer. Partners in life, partners in business and partners in fighting pancreatic cancer. Losing Ron was devastating but, Agi refused to give up on what they had been fighting for. They were fighting for a cure, they were fighting to live. After Ron's death, Agi immediately took her pain and grief and turned it into something positive, the start of a foundation in memory of the man she loved. Agi's daughter, Lisa had a promising career of her own. Wanting to support her mother she agreed to help with the foundation while she was on maternity leave. Though she fully intended to go back and pursue her career, 20+ years later Lisa is now the Executive Director for the Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research and Co-Founder of the annual event Tour de Pier. Agi, not one to let any grass grow under her feet started working on the foundation immediately after Ron's death in May 1997. In July, that same year, the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research was born. When asked what pearls of wisdom Agi could share with other Caregivers – "Have your moments, not just the disease. Your life is not about the disease, it's about your relationship and about how you love each other." What happens when you take two people out of their comfort zone and turn the tables? Special guest Dawn Kamber, Public Affairs Director and Host of “Impact OC” is usually on the other side of the mic. Dawn interviews guests who impact Orange County in a positive way. We turned the tables when we asked Dawn to share her journey with pancreatic cancer which started with a simple media release. Even being in the media, like most, Dawn had never heard of pancreatic cancer until she heard Michael Landon had been diagnosed. Why aren't we hearing more about the disease before reading it in the obituary? What do we need to do to get and keep pancreatic cancer in the media forefront and not just when a celebrity is involved? Why does someone who doesn't have a personal connection with pancreatic cancer become involved? Most of us have want to be well and healthy mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Still, we can feel as if we lack the ability, confidence, or even desire to continue on the journey. In those moments, we have to be reminded that God cares about our desires and wants to help and empower us (Psalm 37:4, Philippians 4:13). God also let us know when He begins a good work in us, He will bring it to completion (Philippians 1:6). The new “C” word is coronavirus, however cancer remains the original dreaded "C" word and one of the leading causes of death in our country. While the pandemic is reaching far and wide, people continue to be diagnosed with other infections and diseases like cancer. Could it be that some of the same strategies we use to prevent and battle cancer are the same approaches we should use to protect our bodies against coronavirus? Join the conversation as I explore this topic with my friend Tina Withrow, Certified Cancer Navigator and Patient Advocate. ____________________________________ Http://www.inspirehealthyharmony.com Today's Guest: Tina Withrow Tina is a Certified Cancer navigator and patient advocate. She is President and CEO of Health-Sync. Health-Sync works with employer groups and individuals to ease the emotional, spiritual, and financial burden caused by the many chronic health conditions seen today through wellness, advocacy and support. Prior to Health–Sync Tina was director of Patient Services at Texas Hematology/Oncology for 11 years. She was the recipient of the Caring Spirit award given by the American Cancer Society and recently was chosen as caregiver of the year by the National Breast Cancer Foundation. http://www.health-sync.net/ __________________________________ Host: Jennifer Pickett One of the country’s leading dietitians, Jennifer Pickett has just announced that she will be launching a brand new podcast focusing on healthy living, holistic self-care, and encouragement. Jennifer has a Master’s Degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Southern Mississippi and will be giving away free tips to her listeners that she has given to countless clients as a health and wellness expert for the past twenty-three years. Jennifer’s journey began after getting frustrated with her own health journey so she decided to dig deep and see what she was missing. What she discovered was a very lopsided approach to healthy living. It’s very common for people to simply rely on a diet, an exercise routine, or a supplement. This one-sided approach simply leads to frustration and doesn’t fully address the whole body and holistic health. Jennifer quickly identified barriers that were holding her back from living life to the fullest. By addressing those obstacles, she started to see the beauty of harmony between body, mind, and soul. During her personal health journey, Jennifer became increasingly frustrated with the lack of simple, realistic, and holistic wellness information. After identifying this gap and huge need, Jennifer decided to launch her own company so she could coach and encourage others. That company is called Healthy Harmony. By using encouraging words with simple and realistic education, Jennifer empowers others to conquer obstacles and move forward on their health journey to live life to the fullest and that is exactly what she will be doing in her new podcast, Healthy Harmony. The podcast will be weekly and will feature several different segments with Jennifer giving healthy lifestyle tips, cooking recipes, and exclusive interviews with other leading health and lifestyle influencers. Jennifer will simultaneously be releasing interactive cooking videos on her personal YouTube channel starting mid-January. She will be teaching viewers how to make simple, healthy meals that anyone can cook at home. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/inspirehealthyharmony/message

Description: Walking into a dispensary is like being a kid in a candy store for many adults. That being said, it hasn’t always been as easy as it is today to find high-quality, lab-tested cannabis. Though she was thankfully able to keep her hands clean, cannabis educator and Director of Patient Services at Sol Flower Dispensaries, Jane Fix, joins The Know Your Dose hosts for this episode on cannabis culture and its evolution over the years. Jane is a longtime proponent of plant medicine, and has experience in the Arizona industry since day one. Episode Highlights: Thomas, Nadeem, and Derek introduce Jane and learn more about what made her the cannabis educator that she is today The Know Your Dose hosts and Jane discuss the grassroots of the Arizona industry and original cannabis collectives Jane, Thomas, and Nadeem talk about what cannabis culture means and how it is evolving The necessity for testing, and current lack thereof in the cannabis industry is discussed Jane speaks on how she helps new patients break the barrier of entry to cannabis as medicine There is a small miscommunication between Jane and Nadeem at 22.27-22.37. WIHI - A Podcast from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement
Date: June 5, 2014 Featuring: Chris Hayes, MD, MSc, Med, FRCPC, Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice (IHI); Medical Officer, Canadian Patient Safety Institute Uma R. Kotagal, MBBS, MSc, Senior Vice President for Quality, Safety, and Transformation, James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Julie A. Holt, RN, MSN, CENP, Vice President, Patient Services, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center If a systems approach is our best shot at improving the safety and quality of health care, a systems approach might also help address the added time and complexity that’s often a feature of improvement work itself. There are growing signs that even the most dedicated improvement champions and clinicians are overwhelmed by what’s required to meet new standards, regulations, and reporting requirements; and, even more troubling, frontline staff are starting to resent and question the value of new quality initiatives and expectations. Add to this physician burnout, which has been a festering problem in the US since the 1990s, and the time is ripe for some solutions. How can organizations be mindful of the burden constant change places on frontline staff? What is "maximally adoptable improvement" and how can improvers better understand it? We explored all of these issues and this WIHI.
