Performance artist and musician Tri Vo loves the work of Theater Mu, and he's looking forward to seeing them take on the horror genre in the world premiere of Keiko Green's play “Hells Canyon.” As with many classic horror pieces, we're headed to a cabin in the woods with a group of unsuspecting friends. They've booked a weekend trip in eastern Oregon, near Hells Canyon. In 1887, it was the location where white gang members massacred 34 Chinese gold miners, an actual event called the Hells Canyon Massacre. As the night progresses, supernatural forces threaten to break in, raising the temperature of the simmering tensions among the friends. Vo recalls being "freaked out” by the digital stage effects in Theater Mu's staging of “The Brothers Paranormal” in 2019, and he looks forward to seeing how this play and its stage effects work together to create an atmosphere of horror. “Hells Canyon” runs Feb. 24 — March 17 at the Jungle Theater in Minneapolis. There is a post-show playwright talkback on Feb 25. This show is recommended for ages 16 and up. Arts appreciator Natasha Brownlee of St. Paul enjoys both the music and the art of Ian Valor. She calls his solo art exhibit “Wild Imagination” at Vine Arts in Minneapolis a “conceptual dreamscape.” Brownlee was particularly intrigued by Valor's line drawings. Look closely, and you can see a single line of changing thickness; stand back, and the line coalesces into a single image. Valor is color blind, and his earlier work is in black and white. More recent works in color includes bold, eye-catching color combinations. Valor is the frontman of the rock group The Valors, and his art show also includes a wall of hand-lettered show posters for his and other bands. It's a visual dive into the local music scene. “Wild Imagination” is on view at Vine Arts Center in Minneapolis this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a closing artists reception from 5-8 p.m. John Carrier of Winona is a retired scenic carpenter and an ongoing jazz enthusiast. He's spreading the word about the debut album from H3O Jazz Trio, a father-and-sons group based in Winona. The father in the trio is a composer and former St. Mary's University assistant music professor named Eric Heukeshoven, who plays keyboard, among other instruments. The band also includes his sons, Max on bass and Hans on percussion and vibes. Carrier loves watching the trio improvise when they perform in person.  Their new album, “TafelJazz,” translates from German to “table-jazz,” a play on “table music.” Carrier says it's the perfect album to set the mood while sitting around the table with friends. The 12 original songs include guests Janet Heukeshoven on flute, John Paulson of Paulson Jazz and John Sievers of the Rochester-based D'Sievers. H3O will perform the full album this Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Island City Brewing in Winona. Island City Brewing also hosts a Jazz Jam on the third Sunday of each month that combines local live jazz, local beer and local support; it's a fundraiser for a rotating series of area nonprofits. As of early February, H3O Jazz Trio and Island City Brewing helped support local nonprofits with over $43,000 in total donations from its monthly Jazz Jams.

They were kind enough to all come on the podcast together to share their thoughts on recruiting, college soccer, and reflect on their time together at VCU. There's a ton of useful information as is always the case when coaches are given the opportunity to chat about what they do.SummaryThe conversation covers topics such as the potential of the program, transitioning to new roles, recruiting challenges, managing the current roster, building a strong culture, progress and development, recruiting strategies, creating a winning environment, coaching experience and background, transitioning to college soccer, managing player development, retaining players and communication, roster size and spring training, and player development and roles. The conversation explores the importance of asking impressive questions as a recruit, understanding the program's style of play, the player's role and improvement, the significance of first impressions, and the value of ID camps.TakeawaysRecruits should ask questions that demonstrate their knowledge of the program and show genuine interest.Understanding the program's style of play is crucial for recruits to determine if it aligns with their own playing style.Recruits should inquire about how the program can help them improve as players and reach their full potential.First impressions, including questions and social media presence, can greatly impact a recruit's chances of being recruited.ID camps can be valuable for recruits to showcase their skills and get a feel for the program's environment, but it's important to prioritize club games and choose camps wisely.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Roles00:52 Potential of the Program02:36 Transitioning to New Roles03:35 Recruiting Challenges04:04 Managing the Current Roster06:31 Taking Over a New Program08:42 Building a Strong Culture12:24 Progress and Development18:44 Recruiting Strategies20:45 Creating a Winning Environment25:17 Coaching Experience and Background27:11 Coaching in the Development Academy28:46 Transitioning to College Soccer33:21 Managing Player Development40:24 Retaining Players and Communication43:48 Roster Size and Spring Training50:56 Player Development and Roles55:53 Impressive Questions from Recruits59:15 Understanding the Program's Style of Play01:02:14 Understanding the Player's Role and Improvement01:05:14 The Importance of First Impressions01:06:20 The Value of ID Camps

Martial Attitude Training and my MSc in Applied Sport Psychology research are happening! And it introduced and complemented by a new series of short podcasts exploring how touch, exercise, and confidence are perceived in the visually impaired and blind community. The first guest is Takashi, a professional viola player based in London. He explains to us how there is a good and bad way to touch and be touched.Would you like to participate too? Please keep reading, then.I am very grateful and happy to share that our funding application through National Lottery was successful! We will soon deliver a series of workshops to visually impaired/blind people, possibly in February-March 2024. As MSc in Applied Sport Psychology student at  St. Mary's University, Twickenham, my research will be a great opportunity to combine valuable research contributing to the scarce literature on the topic, and the application on the field of a significant and impactful work empowering the visual impaired community. It would be then possible to measure pre/post intervention for perceived psychological/physical well-being and confidence on top of important demographic aspects such as age and level of visual impairment, across participants. Also, interviews will be taken, and videos recorded.Imagine if you were visually impaired or blind. How is sight loss affecting your movements, posture, and your attitude towards a healthy lifestyle and other people? Is it possible to develop a training method enhanced by a solid sport psychological approach specifically tailored for visually impaired and blind people? My experience as a Sport & Remedial Massage Therapist led me to observe that visually impaired and blind people, usually suffering of overall poor posture, need specific support when addressing any kind of exercise and manual therapy as they lack full proprioception and are often live a sedentary life, aggravated by different degrees of anxiety, and depression.Combining some of the close-up techniques and tactile teaching methods derived from Kung Fu Wing Chun, that I train and teach, I have found that visually impaired and blind people can also increase their confidence and self-efficacy in controlling their immediate surroundings when in a new environment or in contact with strangers.A notable client registered as blind that I have been working with for over two years is Peter Sands, Chairman of the London Sports Club for the Blind, provided the following reference: “The training has personally helped me to feel confident in crowded situations, be aware of my posture alignments and overall has improved my balance.” Pre-pandemic, Peter and I have also recorded a presentation of the work done together, which you can watch clicking HEREBuilding onto these observations, I created Martial Attitude C.I.C., I qualified as Gym Instructor, and I undertook biomechanics for all three years during my undergraduate at Roehampton University to gain the psychological/biomechanical foundations and to learn about the different methodological approaches that could be integrated in Martial Attitude training for visually impaired and blind people. If you are visually impaired or blind, or if you know someone who is, and would like to take part to the series of Martial Attitude Voice podcast interviews exploring touch, confidence and visual impairment or if you would like to join in the upcoming Martial Attitude Training workshop early next year, please do keep in touch, via Instagram or according to your communication preferences, all available in the Instagram link in bio. She has done cross-cultural research in China and the United States for over 20 years, has published over 30 education and research articles, many related to China or cross-cultural learning and has given talks and workshops throughout the United States and internationally. Dr. Pine has spent extended periods in rural China, including five lengthy visits to one village to teach teachers from neighboring communities, consult in the local school and learn about rural life. Her recent book, One in a Billion: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey through Modern-Day China, grew from that experience and challenged her to move from academic to narrative writing. One in a Billion is a powerful account of how one stubborn, hardworking Chinese man has lived by his values, stood up for his convictions and succeeded against all odds in the authoritarian environment of China. Despite grinding poverty, hunger, reeducation campaigns and attacks from jealous peers, An Wei has launched one innovative project after another, including a democratic congress in his own village. Resilient to the core, he has continuously worked to overcome corruption, improve the world and build understanding between China and the West. As tensions rise over human rights in China and potential military threats grow, An Wei's story becomes ever more significant.

On this week's episode of the podcast we sit down with Founder and CEO of AllInFit, Marlon Smith. Marlon Smith formed All In Fit in 2019 when he saw an opportunity to utilize his background as a pro athlete to coach the same skills and mindsets with business professionals. Marlon has been an athlete all his life. He grew up in San Antonio, Texas and excelled in both basketball and football throughout primary schooling. He then accepted a full ride to St. Mary's University on a basketball scholarship. He earned a school record for most blocks in a season. After that, he took his talents to football at The University of Texas at San Antonio where played defensive end and recorded the third-highest single-season sack total in school history. Pro recruiters began to take notice. In 2014, Marlon was offered a contract with the Ottawa RedBlacks for their inaugural season in the Canadian Football League. As a starting defensive end, Marlon helped take the RedBlacks to the CFL's Grey Cup. Following his career in the CFL, the Alliance of American Football offered him a contract to play in the United States. Shortly after signing, a major back injury brought his three-year pro career to a halt. Marlon had the choice to give up. However, he noticed that the routines he developed during his professional career kept him active and motivated in every area of his life. Marlon quickly realized that anyone can benefit from his training regimen. No limits. The question is, however, are those populations excluded by markets or from markets? Eric and Dan then discuss the alleged surge in popularity for Osama bin Laden's “Letter to America” on TikTok. Is this justification for the 9/11 attacks really as pronounced of a phenomenon as it was made out to be? Or were the people expressing horror and outrage about the trend helping to boost it into a bigger problem than it originally was?Is there a case to be made to ban the TikTok app? And finally, a number of American CEOs gathered in San Francisco to celebrate Chinese president Xi Jinping. In the MIAC conference there are two schools that you need to start paying attention to as an opponent or a basketball fan if you haven't before.  Both St. Mary's University and Macalester College have had tough seasons on the hardwood in the not so distant past but in the last 5 seasons have taken some steps to no longer be a pushover in their conference.  I am joined by the head coaches of each program – Joe Fano and Abe Woldeslassie to talk about their journeys.  Both coaches are entering their 6th season leading their schools. At St. Mary's – the season prior to Coach Fano arriving they finished 1 – 24 and in a short time Joe has the Cardinals headed in the right direction as they have had 3 appearances in the MIAC post-season tournament in his 5 years and also led the school to their first MIAC playoff win in school history! At Macalester – the Scots had won just 35 games in the 10 seasons prior to Coach Woldeslassie taking over and he also has had a positive influence on his program leading the Scots to the MIAC playoffs in back to back seasons, including the championship game in 2021-22 doing so as #6 seed which had never before happened in MIAC history. For both of them this is their first head coaching job at any level and we discuss what prepared them for their jobs, some of their most memorable moments at their schools so far and the keys to sustaining momentum.

Dr. Aaron Bateman is an Assistant Professor of History and International Affairs at George Washington University and an affiliate of the Space Policy Institute. He received his Master's in International Relations from St. Mary's University in San Antonio and his PhD in the History of Science and Technology at Johns Hopkins University. His research takes place at the intersection of science, technology, and national security during the Cold War. His research interests include technological cooperation and competition, military spaceflight, secrecy and knowledge regulation, arms control, technology and warfare, and the role of intelligence in statecraft. His work draws from archival collections in the United States, Western Europe, and the former Soviet Union. His first book project places Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative in the context of a more militarized American approach to space that had emerged in the 1970s, and shows how divergent views of space militarization influenced U.S. foreign relations and public diplomacy through the end of the Cold War. In other projects he explores the development of overseas American surveillance infrastructure and its impact on U.S. relations with host nations. His work has appeared, or is forthcoming, in Diplomacy & Statecraft, Intelligence and National Security, the Oxford Handbook of Space Security, the Journal of Strategic Studies, the International Journal of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, Science & Diplomacy, Diplomacy and Statecraft, and the Journal of Slavic Military Studies. Since he believes that historians have a unique role to play in informing current policy debates, he also writes about contemporary defense and space topics in policy-focused publications including the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Physics Today, and War on the Rocks. While completing his doctoral studies, Dr. Bateman held a Guggenheim predoctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Prior to graduate school, he served as a U.S. Air Force intelligence officer with assignments at the National Security Agency and the Pentagon. As a staff member at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, he supported intelligence and national security space efforts. He has also participated in international dialogues aimed at promoting stability in space.

In celebration of our third anniversary, we're re-releasing one of our favorite episodes from the past year.  There is a huge jump from grad school to private practice life and from being a student to being a clinician full time. Unfortunately, there are challenges stacked up against beginning therapists that make it difficult to feel like they're doing enough whether it's professionally, developmentally, or even one-on-one with their clients. In this episode, Dr. Erin Elmore speaks with Ben Behnen. Ben has a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Mary's University. He is currently accruing his hours to become licensed. Ben has taken his experience of becoming a MFT and turned it into a blog aptly named, “Becoming a Therapist”, where he writes a bi-weekly newsletter, hosts a podcast, and is building a community to help beginning therapists grow. Together Erin and Ben discuss the current state pre-licensure therapists are coming into, some of the challenges around the transition from student to clinician, the common struggles around imposter syndrome and frequent questions asked by pre-licensed therapists. There is a huge jump from grad school to private practice life, but resources like Ben's website Becoming a Therapist can help guide that growth process.   For more information about Becoming a Therapist, please visit: https://becomingatherapist.me For more information about Becoming a Therapist podcast, please visit: https://becomingatherapist.me/podcast/ To subscribe to the Becoming a Therapist newsletter, please visit: https://becomingatherapist.me/theragrowth-newsletter/ For more information about the pre-licensed experience, we suggest How to Survive and Thrive as a Therapist by Kenneth S. I laced up my high tops and hit the hardwood with Dan Engelstad, the head men's basketball coach at Mt. St. Mary's University. This episode was very special, as I was Dan's basketball performance coach 20 years ago when he was a stand-out player at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, MD.
