William Moyers was one of the lucky ones. Sober for decades after years of addiction to alcohol and crack cocaine, he became a model of success and redemption. He started working at the Hazelden Betty Ford, and in 2006, he published a vulnerable memoir, “Broken,” about his journey out of addiction. But then he was prescribed pain killers after some dental work. And he found himself addicted again. Only this time, he had a public persona. People looked to him for hope. And he found opioids a much harder substance to break free from. What happened next is captured in his new memoir, “Broken Open: What Painkillers Taught Me about Life and Recovery.” Moyers said it changed his focus from sobriety to recovery, and it caused him to rethink how addicts can get there. This week, he joins host Kerri Miller in the studio for an conversation about what true recovery looks like. “It's really messy,” he says. “It's particularly messy for those of us who are public advocates for organizations like Hazelden Betty Ford who are putting their stories out there to inspire others to get well. My story has helped thousands and thousands of people, and I'm glad for it. But there's more to it, which is why I have to tell this story.” Guest: William C. Alta DeRoo, MD, MBA, FACOG, DFASAM, joins host, Zach, to talk about her experience in the US Navy (USN) and her path to practicing OBGYN and addiction medicine. She discusses the intersection of general medicine or primary specialty practice and addiction and shares her perspectives on stigma related to addiction. Dr. DeRoo explains the potential challenges of transitioning from active duty to veteran status and how these can sometimes lead to substance use, addiction, or mental health issues. Finally, she shares what inspired (and continues to inspire) her sense of service and offers advice to the next generation of addiction medicine specialists. Dr. DeRoo's father was active-duty Navy when she was born on Midway Island in the South Pacific. A sense of service was branded in her character, and after earning a BA in psychology from Connecticut College, she joined the Navy and served for 24 years. She was selected for combat Naval Aviation and was among the first cohort of women to fly in combat. Dr. DeRoo was the first female in her community of the E2C Hawkeye, a carrier airborne early warning plane. (They have a short cameo in Top Gun, but you would not see Mav flying her plane.) After 8 years of aviation and over 40 combat missions, Dr. DeRoo was awarded a scholarship to attend medical school. After graduating from the University of Florida College of Medicine, she completed residency in OBGYN. She completed several missions, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and 5 deployments on the USNS Mercy performing surgeries in Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines, and she was the mission commander of a Papua, New Guinea mission. Dr. DeRoo became very aware of the alcohol and drugs that sailors and soldiers used on deployment (for various reasons). Her father was also one of these sailors who eventually developed alcohol use disorder. From his stories and the stories of her shipmates and battle buddies, she became very interested in the science of addiction. Her Commanding Officer at the time allowed her to moonlight at a nearby methadone clinic, which was the beginning of her career in addiction medicine. Dr. DeRoo later became board certified in addiction medicine and practiced both OBGYN and addiction medicine. She retired from the USN to Culpeper, VA, where she started the county's first ever OBOT with their Community Services Board, started treating pregnant women with SUD, and incorporated this into a clinic in her town. Through aggressive naloxone distribution and OUD treatment, they were able to decrease their opioid overdose rate between 2016-2018. It was during this time Dr. DeRoo also became interested in the Virginia Chapter of ASAM. She served as secretary for two years, then president elect in 2020. The only thing that drew her away from serving as president in 2020 was a job opportunity that, to her, was a calling. She was asked to be the medical director of the Betty Ford Center and all California sites. She made dramatic changes there and was promoted to chief medical officer of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and their 16 sites across the US. During this time, she also earned an MBA from the University of Virginia and became a Distinguished Fellow of ASAM.   Virginia Society of Addiction Medicine (VASAM) American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation Distinguished Fellows of ASAM (DFASAM) If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, you are not alone. In this episode, a look at adult people that grew up in an addictive or dysfunctional family. Because if you did, there is a good chance you might have an anxiety condition or a related mental health problem.   How do you get to be an adult child of a dysfunctional family. There are many pathways.    Many are raised in an abusive or addictive family. Others are raised in a generational trauma system.    Some people are raised by adults who do not have a clue about how to be a parent because they were never taught or exposed to a healthy, stable or loving environment.   It isn't about poverty or wealth. Matthew Perry wrote about his issues with addiction to alcohol and drugs. In his memoir, he said he began drinking at 14 and was an alcoholic by 18. Perry first went to rehab and completed a 28-day program at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation after a jet-ski accident led to an addiction to Vicodin. In his 2022 memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big, Terrible Thing," Perry claimed to have been to rehab 15 times, detoxed 65 times, and spent about $7 to $9 million trying to get sober.     After years of addiction, Matthew Perry spent 5-months in the hospital after his colon burst from prolonged opioid abuse. Perry says he was in surgery for seven hours and in a coma for two weeks. Doctors told his family he had a 2% chance of survival. After leaving the hospital, Perry used a colostomy bag for months.   Two years after his near-death experience, Matthew Perry goes to a Rehab facility in Switzerland. He wrote that he faked pain symptoms to get Oxycontin during COVID. He was also getting daily Ketamine infusions. While at the facility, Perry needed to have surgery and was given propofol. When he woke up 11 hours later, he found out his heart had stopped for 5 minutes and during the long CPR process 8 of his ribs were broken. The doctor then refused more meds.   On October 28, Matthew Perry went to his country club to play a game of Pickleball with friends. Perry returned to his home after the game and was seen by his assistant, who was leaving the house to run errands. At 4 p.m., the assistant returned home and found Perry floating face down in the heated end of the pool.  Paramedics pulled Perry out of the pool and pronounced him dead at the scene. The DailyMail reports the actor died from an overdose of the "party drug ketamine."  Joining Nancy Grace Today:  Wendy Patrick – California Prosecutor, Author of “Why Bad Looks Good” and “Red Flags,” and Host of “Today with Dr. Wendy” on KCBQ in San Diego; Twitter: @WendyPatrickPHD Caryn L. As the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation's chief business growth officer, Bob Poznanovich is responsible for bridging the gap between product development, marketing and sales to help the nonprofit reach more people with its lifesaving substance use and mental health care and resources. Prior to joining Hazelden Betty Ford, Poznanovich co-founded and served as the CEO of AiR Healthcare—a behavioral health organization that provides solutions to individuals, families and employers dealing with behavioral health issues. Before that, he spent over 20 years as a senior business development executive in the technology industry. He is co-author of the Hazelden Publishing title, It Is Not Okay to be a Cannibal: How to Stop Addiction from Eating Your Family Alive.  Quotes: "I've done a lot of work not only perfecting the sales perspective, but also the buying perspective"  "Not many people talk about selling as a buyer, as opposed to selling as a salesman… there is there is a psychological buying process that people go through when they're making a decision."  "I think if you look at that way to being innovative in the area of growth, of selling to more, which is looking at products and services that we don't have. So part of this vision was that we've got to create x number of millions of dollars in growth over the next year for products and services that don't exist while we're also selling and maximizing the capacity of what we currently have and then looking for ways to get more value so we could sell for more." "And when you go to customer one, he goes, I got this problem. Go to customer two, I say, I got this problem. I could say to customer two, what about customer one's example, right? Do you have that problem, too, right? Now, when I go to see a third guy, I got three problems tee up, right, his plus the previous two. And I could start this dialogue where I get smarter in every sales call I get to see that the patterns and opportunities exist." "I think in any sales job, no matter what you're selling, your biggest competitor is always willingness to change." "We need to invest in more personalization of healthcare. So the tools that allow us to personalize care, to personalize the initiative, to deliver care personalized, to use real feedback from wearables, I think, is the next area, I think, to get past some of this denial." Well, it's just the two of us again and we actually had quite a bit to talk about. Mike did his reading and it was about choices. They are lost while we are drinking, but when we get sober, we have a "sense' of choice again. It was a good reading and a good discussion. It's October, the tenth month, so we dove into the 10th Step. Personally, we both feel like this step is a big one and we talked about when we started practicing it, how it has helped us and maybe even makes us better people. We did a recap of Mike and Chris' time at Cinema Wasteland last weekend and some people approached Mike again about the podcast. And... we have now partnered with the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, to accept donations for them through our website. Check it out at www.sobernotmature.com The last thing we touched on was placing reasons on why "we" drink and why "we" become alcoholics. We have some opinions and as always, they are just our opinions. Enjoy the episode. Visit us Podcast  www.sobernotmature.com Store  www.sobernotmatureshop.com

When a loved one struggles with addiction, the whole family struggles too. Family members may worry that they caused, or at least contributed to, the addiction. Or they may fear that if they urge treatment, they somehow will be blamed. They almost always grapple with how to show love while still recognizing that limits and consequences are part of love. Although families may be reluctant to name it, their greatest fear is that their loved one will die.   Jessica Garrison, certified drug and alcohol counselor with Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, confronts all of these challenges in her discussion with Marti & Erin. She also highlights ways families can support their own healing and sustain hope, even through the “one step back” that often follows two steps forward. Countless families have a loved one struggling with both mental health and substance use concerns. Many families struggle to find healthy ways to help their loved one without sacrificing their own health and wellbeing in the process. She highlights the parallel processes that often occur – for example, a son lying about his substance use and other families in turn lying about why he didn't show up for an important event. Sarah challenges parents to get rid of the idea that “You are only as happy as your least happy child,” urging parents to build community that will help to buffer the effects of your loved one's choices on your own wellbeing. You will welcome the concrete advice Sarah brings about when and how to confront your loved one and how to set clear boundaries for yourself without trying to control that person's behavior. Tune into this important episode of Mom Enough and encourage others you know to do the same.   WHY ARE HEALTHY HELPING PATTERNS SO IMPORTANT WHEN COPING WITH A LOVED ONE'S MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE CONCERNS? Nora and Chelsy are Co-authors of the book 50 Lessons for Happy Lawyers: Boost Wellness. Build Resilience. Yes, You Can!, which is the most recent book in Nora's 50 Lessons for Lawyers series. This book raises awareness on mental health and well-being challenges in the legal profession and equips individual lawyers with the skills needed to take action and live a happier life.  In this episode… A 2016 study from the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation shows that 28% of lawyers struggle with some level of depression, and 19% demonstrate symptoms of anxiety. On top of that, a Legal Trends Report from 2018 tells us that 75% of lawyers frequently work outside of business hours, and 39% said that working long hours has affected their personal lives. Since the emergence of the pandemic, these numbers are likely higher. So what can we do, whether on an individual or institutional level, to support lawyers' mental health and well-being?
