Welcome back to The Mind Mate Podcast! Today, I have the absolute honour of sitting down with Dr. Kirk Schneider—one of the leading voices in contemporary existential-humanistic psychology and a true pioneer in the field of depth-oriented healing. Dr. Schneider has an impressive career that spans decades. He's a licensed psychologist, the past editor of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology, and president of the Existential-Humanistic Institute. He teaches at Saybrook University and Columbia University's Teachers College and is a Fellow of five divisions of the American Psychological Association. Beyond that, he's a prolific author, having written or coauthored 12 books, including The Paradoxical Self, Horror and the Holy, Existential-Integrative Psychotherapy, and Awakening to Awe. Today, we'll touch on his latest contribution, Life-Enhancing Anxiety: Key to a Sane World, which offers a global perspective on existential approaches to healing and transformation. What's striking about Dr. Schneider's work is how deeply it calls us to engage with life's mysteries—the awe, the terror, and the paradoxes that shape the human experience. He's also the founder of the Corps of Depth Healers, a movement designed to bring depth-oriented, existential practices to communities in need. It's a radical and necessary initiative in our increasingly fragmented world, and I'm excited to explore it with him today. If you're as fascinated as I am, I highly recommend diving into Dr. Schneider's world. Visit his website at www.kirkjschneider.com for more about his work and writings. In this episode of the "Stronger Marriage Connection" podcast, hosts Dave Schramm and Liz Hale are joined by certified sex therapist Jessa Zimmerman. They delve into common sexual issues faced by couples, focusing on sexual desire discrepancies and strategies for maintaining a strong marital connection. Jessa provides invaluable insights into reactive and proactive desires, the sexual avoidance cycle, and the impacts of pressure and expectations on sexual intimacy. About Jessa Zimmerman: Jessa Zimmerman is a licensed couples’ counselor and nationally certified sex therapist. Sheworks in private practice in Seattle, WA. Over the course of her therapy career, she has focused almost exclusively on helping couples with their emotional and sexual intimacy. In her years of clinical experience, Zimmerman has treated hundreds of couples who have struggled to feel sexual desire and fulfillment. Her clients describe having a good relationship in other ways, but their sex life has become difficult to the point that they start to avoid sex. These are people who love each other but are struggling to have a sex life they both enjoy. She specializes in helping these couples who find that sex has become stressful, negative, disappointing, or pressured. She educates, coaches, and supports people as they go through her 4 pillar experiential process that allows them real world practice in changing their relationship and their sex life, guiding them to become easily intimate. Zimmerman received her Master’s in Psychology from LIOS college of Saybrook University andSex Therapist certification from the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). She has done extensive training in couples’ therapy, with a focus onCrucible® Therapy with Dr. David Schnarch. She is the author of Sex Without Stress; A Couple’s Guide to Overcoming Disappointment, Avoidance & Pressure. She is the host of the Better Sex Podcast and has appeared on numerous other podcasts as an expert guest. She is the creator of the Intimacy With Ease Method and founder of The Desire Spa, an online course for women with little to no libido. She is a regularly featured expert in the media, including Refinery29, Marriage.com, Business Insider, and Mind Body Green. She lives in Seattle with her partner. Insights: Jessa: One cannot fail in sex if they shift their mindset to view it simply as a source of pleasure and connection, without attaching to specific outcomes. By embracing this approach, sexual experiences can become easy and enjoyable, even if they differ from previous expectations or desires. The key lies in accepting and adapting to these differences, which opens limitless possibilities for enjoyment and satisfaction. Dave: Moods for sexual activity evolve over time, there is a contrast between the constant readiness (proactive mood) in early stages of relationships with the need to actively engage or transition into feeling ready (reactive mood) as time progresses. If couples only engaged in sex when both partners were spontaneously in the mood, they might seldom have sex. Love the concepts of reactive and proactive desire, and engaging physically can lead to a physiological response where the body releases dopamine and serotonin, aligning physical readiness with emotional desire. Liz: Sex is like going to a playground, we don't know how long we're going to stay. We're not sure what we're going to enjoy once we get there. But we are going to enjoy it. It's not about the outcome or the goal. Pearlette J. Ramos, Ph.D., J.D. is a lawyer, transformational leader, social justice advocate, and entrepreneur with more than 25 years' experience in activism, change and strategic management, and DEI consultation. Born in Youngstown, Ohio and raised in the housing projects, Pearlette's childhood home was poverty- stricken and riddled with substance abuse, domestic abuse and untreated mental illness. Due to the trauma, she fled her parents' home when she was 15 years old. Within twelve months she was pregnant, married and a high school dropout. During her 20s, she struggled as a single mom who worked three jobs at a time just to make ends meet. These challenges prompted her to attend college-then law school school—where she dreamt of changing the laws and systems that disproportionately impacted women and children. Dr. Ramos serves as the senior director for the Office of Justice and Civil Rights for the Washington Department of Social and Health Services, the largest state agency with more than 17,000 employees serving approximately 2 million clients. She also leads Pearlette Ramos LLC as well as Sisters Talk About Race, an Arizona nonprofit she co-founded, which is committed to connecting, educating, and activating women to end systemic racism and ensure justice. She is committed to breaking cycles of poverty, advocating for justice and strengthening the health and vitality of communities. Dr. Ramos is producing her first social impact film, Three (Extra)Ordinary Women, which explores the life stories of three women of color who collectively overcame poverty, abuse, systemic racism, and political occupation as they brave their biggest physical obstacle yet—climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. The documentary uses the imposing Mt. Kilimanjaro as both a physical structure and metaphor for conquering battles that seem insurmountable --like overcoming trauma, ending violence, and ensuring justice. See https://threeextraordinarywomen.com After graduating from Case Western Reserve University School of Law (1995), Dr. Ramos practiced law as a civil litigator prior to attending Saybrook University where she earned a doctorate degree in psychology. Her dissertation, Well-Being: A Study of Attorney Believes, Attitudes, and Perceptions (2012), takes a critical look at the factors that influence well-being among Arizona lawyers. When she isn't cherishing time spent with her two adult daughters, Dr. Ramos contributes her talents to various community organizations including serving as the president of the Arizona Black Bar, vice chairperson of OneAZ Credit Union, and member of the Avondale Neighborhood and Family Services Commission, Arizona Lawyers for Equal Justice, State Bar of Arizona's Council on Minorities and Women in the Law, Phoenix Rotary 100, and the Arizona Center for Civil Leadership (Flinn Brown). ---------- Guiding Growth: Conversations with Community Leaders Join our hosts, Sarah Watts and Ben Kalkman, as we explore the human journey of leaders - their stories of humility, triumph, roadblocks, and lessons learned - as they reflect on how they became who they are today and share stories of inspiration and hope with listeners. What happens when we apply clinical research made for men to solutions for women? This causes little to no solution as biological women have different needs from biological men especially taking cycles into consideration. Host note: folks, I invite you to pay very close attention to what Dr. Hollis has to say...could change your life.Jungian/Depth psychology provides a wonderful framework for exploring questions related to meaning and the self that can at time fall outside of boundaries of what is typically explored in cognitive behavioural therapy.  Esteemed author and Jungian analyst Dr. James Hollis joins us for an in-depth discussion of core themes explored in his new book, A Life of Meaning: Relocating Your Center of Spiritual Gravity.  In this conversation we cover:  defining depth/Jungian psychology knowing the wants, needs & agendas our unconscious might havea consideration of whether the desires of the unconscious be used as a compass with respect to where to take one's lifecomparing and contrasting the wisdom of the unconscious vs. that of the ego and what each mode has to teach the other the importance of a constant bidirectional conversation/negotiation between the unconscious and the egodefining the shadow and the value of shadow workknowing when we have aligned the will of our unconscious and conscious minds  developing flexibility in tolerating an emergent, incongruent sense of self   especially if our unconscious makes conscious a particularly challenging fork in the road that would potentially upset others or ourselves.  recognizing key opportunities for change/departures in one's lifeComments or feedback?  Email us at: oicbtpodcast@gmail.com James Hollis, PhD was born in Springfield, Illinois, and graduated from Manchester University in 1962 and Drew University in 1967. The Living Process is a series of Focusing conversations with Focusing people. In this episode, I talk with Dr Ken Bradford. Ken combines Buddhist psychology & meditation, existentially-robust therapy, and the nondual awareness of Dzogchen.  He began a dedicated practice of insight meditation in 1975, and Dzogchen. After earning a Ph.D. in Psychology at Saybrook University, Ken trained in Focusing with Eugene Gendlin followed by a decade-long apprenticeship in Existential Psychotherapy with James Bugental including co-teaching with him for several years. During this period, Ken developed a contemplative-existential approach to therapy intertwining Buddhist and experience-near psychology, enhanced through training in Nondual Therapy. Ken recently closed his psychotherapy practice and retired as an Adjunct Professor at John F. Kennedy University and California Institute of Integral Studies, devoting himself to Dharma teaching, personal retreat, writing, and the contemplative life. His teaching is now primarily occurring at Mountain Stream Meditation, in Nevada City, CA, as a member of the Mountain Stream Teachers Council. For more information about Ken's current work, see: www.authenticpresence.net In this episode, Ken and Greg have a far-reaching discussion beginning with his correspondence with Gene Gendlin for about 5 years in the early 80s. In these letters, Ken and Gene wrote about their mutual interest in what they called ‘the openness' having met at a Buddhist retreat where Gene was teaching Focusing. Ken emphasises the meditative quality that focusing offers to the therapist and how Focusing addresses problems and Buddhism addresses the 'whole thing' but that this can cause a spiritual bypass that focusing catches. We discussed how each person has their own capacity to be present. And we practice a bit of what we are talking about during the conversation…. Ken mentions his training with James Bugenthal and how this could be considered an early form of FOT. Ken also discerns the difference between 'Understanding the experience and experiencing the understanding'. We touch on authenticity, Winnicott, and the importance for therapists to have their own experiential practice. About 10 minutes in you can see my dog, Elliott, re-making his bed. Usually, Elliott is an attentive listener but on this occasion, he was distracted...

The interview begins @ 6:24 In this enlightening conversation with Dr. James Hollis, renowned Jungian analyst, we dive deep into the psychic underpinnings of our religious traditions and explore the profound concept of the soul. Using Jung's understanding of God as a starting point, we traverse the labyrinth of depth psychology, examining not religious theology but the spiritual essence embedded within our psyche. Dr. Hollis challenges preconceived notions of Western healing approaches, underscoring the importance of addressing long-term developmental tasks contributing to our life's suffering and our existential quest for meaning. We probe into the power of choice, its pivotal role in harmonizing our inner and outer worlds, and the necessity of viewing our lives through a transpersonal lens. In a contemplative reflection on his own life and the influence of Jungian theory, Dr. Hollis encourages us all to engage in a deeper dialogue with our lives, acknowledging the humbling realization that we aren't truly in control. Our discussion pivots to the human propensity for constructing theology, culture, and structures as conduits to the mystery of existence, bearing the psychological imprints of their originators. We navigate the intricate dynamics of resistance within the relationship between ego and the unconscious, emphasizing our responsibility for the choices we make. The existential query is central to our exploration: "What stirs your spirit to evolve and redefine your life?" We touch upon cultural sickness, institutional failure, and the potential for growth within tradition, culminating in a discourse on gender fluidity, the impact of consumerism, and the essence of a truly healing analysis. This exploration offers listeners the tools to navigate towards their own 'true north', fostering a stronger connection with their intuitive inner life. Join us as we transcend the diversions of popular culture, and dive into the depths of our collective psyche. Bio: James Hollis, Ph. In this episode, Dr. David Hanscom continues his discussion with Dr. Kirk Schneider, an integrative existential psychotherapist. He explains the principles and process of his integrative existential therapy practice. He begins by asking the client two questions: How are you presently living? And how are you willing to live? The first question allows the client to explore what is going on. The second question helps clients discover a more open, internally free domain. He focuses on what is most helpful for the client at the present time and invites the client to experience the issue in the body. As they establish trust with him, they can move from experiencing vulnerability to transcend the risk and experience life as an adventure. Dr. Kirk Schneider is a leading spokesperson for existential-humanistic and existential-integrative psychotherapy.  He is an adjunct faculty at Saybrook University and Teachers College, Columbia University.   He is also the author or coauthor of 14 books, including Existential-Humanistic Therapy (with Orah Krug), Awakening to Awe, and his most recent book Life-Enhancing Anxiety: Key to a Sane World. What IS Urolithin A and How Does It Help Healthy Aging?

You potentially  haven't even thought about Urolithin A yet today! Ha! Well, I hadn't either. In fact, I want to put an r in the word, it's so unfamiliar I struggled with it in the interview! But it can have a positive impact on healthy aging and we're going to tell you just how.  What you have thought about today is your energy. Or you've taken it for granted because it's already great. Nearly 80% of our community deal with lower energy than they'd like and cope with it quietly or resort to quick fixes that not only don't last but prolong fatigue.  Warning if you're sensitive to supplements or feel my talking about them becomes too salesy, this may not be your episode. While this is not meant to sell you, persuade you or entice you it is intended to make you aware of discoveries that can boost your nutrition when you're not able to eat enough, or don't get enough of the right foods for whatever reason.  A supplement won't do the heavy lifting if you aren't trying. If you don't eat well, a supplement is really a ridiculous effort. Drinking Boost or Ensure-like products is not life sustaining. Real food recently grown by sun and rain is necessary. But when you can't, or when you can and depleted soil and quality of food means low energy and absorption, then science discoveries can help.  We can agree to disagree. And I think we can co-exist happily doing so. Vegans live in the same household as carnivores for crying out loud!  My Guest:  Jennifer Scheinman, MS, RDN, LDN, completed her dietetic internship at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center and went on to complete her master's degree in Integrative and Functional Nutrition at Saybrook University. Over the past 20 years she has worked at some of the country's leading institutions for health and wellness, including Hospital for Special Surgery and Optum, where she led the creation of nutrition and health education programs that positively impacted thousands of people's lives. Jen is currently the Senior Manager of Nutrition Affairs at Timeline Nutrition, educating healthcare practitioners and consumers on the latest scientific breakthroughs in healthy aging. Questions We Answer in This Episode: What are mitochondria and why should we care about them? What are things I can do to keep my mitochondria happy and healthy? What is Urolithin A/Mitopure, and how does it work? What does the research around Urolithin A show? How does it promote longevity and health?
