What price would you pay for freedom? What would you risk for it? For Yeonmi Park, the answer to that question was: Everything. From a daring escape from North Korea to facing the horrors of human trafficking, she dared to dream of a life of freedom. Yet on the other side of that journey, she found that her new home of America was falling prey to the very totalitarian ideology she fought so hard to escape. Miss last week's episode? It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover. So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. ‘Quick, get up!' he said, and the chains fell off Peter's wrists. Then the angel said to him, ‘Put on your clothes and sandals.' And Peter did so. ‘Wrap your cloak round you and follow me,' the angel told him. Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. (Acts 12.1-9, NIV)

If Netflix could reproduce even a small portion of the drama in this week's Psalms, they'd break all box-office records. No screenwriter could imagine how King David, a hostage with no dream of escape, finally made his way to freedom.

Today's story is about Peter the disciple of Jesus - when an Angel miraculously breaks him free from prison. Peter's heart was pounding fast, faster than it ever had before. He didn't dare sit down, in case a rat crawled over his lap again. At least, he thought it had been a rat. It was pitch black in the prison cell, and he really couldn't tell what creatures were in here. Peter inched closer to the bars of the cell door, being careful not to rattle the chains around his ankles too much. The last thing he wanted was for the mean prison guards to hear him. Reaching the cell door, he wrapped his hands around the cold metal bars. How had this happened? Peter thought about the terrible week he'd had. King Herod hated the church that Peter and his friends belonged to. King Herod hated that they talked about Jesus, and how they believed Jesus was the one true King. Peter hadn't been afraid of evil King Herod. He knew that Jesus was stronger than any king on earth. But now King Herod had arrested Peter and thrown him into jail. Not only that, but he had sent so many soldiers to guard the prison. There was no way Peter could escape, and he knew it was only a matter of time before King Herod decided to do something even more evil.... Miraculous Escape from The Prison - Yoruba Prayers
This week, we'll be studying Acts 12:1-19 under the theme “Peter's Miraculous Escape From Prison." God had a mission for Peter and no mere prison was going to deter that mission, even the chains of a prison cell. God broke Peter's chains through a praying church, an angelic visitor, and Peter's willing spirit. Through this, the one who broke the chains of our sin teaches us how we may help those who are imprisoned by life's chains. He thought his life was over.Yet, when a determined elderly woman paid Casey a visit, a whole new world of possibilities began to unfold. Acts 5:17–2117 Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation, 18 And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison. 19 But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said, 20 Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. 21 And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. The issueThe religious council initially held Peter and John because they taught the resurrection from the dead, which the Sadducee-heavy Sanhedrin doesn't believe in.Since preaching the resurrection isn't a crime—the Pharisees do just that—and the public supported them too much, the council couldn't punish them. Now, however, the Sanhedrin can charge the apostles with disobeying a direct order of religious authorities. The Sanhedrin had forbidden Peter and John from preaching in Jesus' name (Acts 4:18). The apostles disobeyed, as Peter warned they would (Acts 4:19–20).The AngelBut an angel of the Lord during the night opened the gates of the prison, and taking them out he said, 20 "Go your way, stand and speak to the people in the temple the whole message of this Life." (Acts 5:19-20 NASB)The word "angel" is from the Greek word aggelos, which means: "a messenger." In general, in texts where an angel appears, the task is to convey the message or do something on behalf of God. Since the focus of the text is on the message, the messenger is rarely described in detail. Thus, the divine emissary may or may not be some sort of supernatural being. How the angel got them out, we don't know, but it sure seems to be miraculous. The impression that Luke wants to give is that God Himself intervened.re-arrested"Go your way, stand and speak to the people in the temple the whole message of this Life." (Acts 5:20 NASB)The apostles ended up before the Sanhedrin, right where they would have been if they had not been released from prison. So, why release them? God did not set the apostles free so they could run for the hills or so they could just indulge their own comfort. They were set free for a reason. What was that reason? It was an acting out of prophecy. Some times God delivers His children, and some times He doesn't.Isaiah 42:7To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the dungeon, And those who dwell in darkness from the prisonLuke 21:16-17But you will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death, 17 and you will be hated by all on account of My name This is a public episode. Theologian and New Testament scholar, F.F. Bruce, tells the story of Sundar Singh, a Tibetan Christian who was likewise freed miraculously from a prison. For preaching of the gospel, he was thrown into a well, and a cover set over it and securely locked. He would be left in the well until he died, and he could see the bones and rotting corpses of those who had already perished in there. On the third night of his imprisonment, he heard someone unlocking the cover of the well and removing it. A voice told him to take hold of the rope that was being lowered. Sundar was grateful that the rope had a loop he could put his foot in, because he had injured his arm in the fall down into the well. He was raised up, the cover was replaced and locked, but when he looked to thank his rescuer he could find no one. When morning came, he went back to the same place he was arrested and started preaching again. News of the preaching came to the official who had him arrested, and Sundar was brought before him again. When the official said someone must have gotten the key and released him, they searched for the key – and found it on the official’s own belt. In this message we learn how to “Build Your Tel” by examining a similar miraculous escape from prison and how it reveals the power to escape any ordeal you are trapped in!

About Lori Rosolowsky Living out her passion for music and art, Lori helps others navigate their journey to the stage, the concert hall, the theater and other venues. Lori Rosolowsky is a Bozeman, Montana-based pianist, singer-songwriter, educator, performer, producer. She is the CEO and founder of Open Sky Artists, LLC, an arts management and consulting firm. Lori and her team at Open Sky Artists create flourishing partnerships for artists and venues while producing captivating events. She supports the work of dozens of artists and venues across the country. Lori is committed to excellence and integrity. Both stem from her education in science and music at Oberlin College (B.A.) and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School (Ph.D.). Connector of People and Ideas Lori is a connector of people and ideas. She believes in lifelong learning. As a connector and someone who loves to serve others, Lori created and chairs Wonderlust's Preludes and Performances, a series of public events for lifelong learners. The series is designed to increase audience engagement of arts offerings in the Gallatin Valley and Big Sky regions of Montana. Similarly, she initiated and hosts RIVERs, (Rhapsody-in-View Events and Retreats). These private house concerts and shows connect socially conscious organizations with professional performers to increase the flow of resources (audience, awareness, and funds) to all participants. She is a collaborative pianist (a.k.a, "accompanist") for students and faculty at Montana State University. Lori is also involved in other musical and theatrical ventures in Bozeman. Likewise Lori serves are as Music Director for Verge Theater's production of Fun Home and as a Board Member of Bozeman Actors Theater. Lori is married to Dr. Mark Rosolowsky, a scientist, and together they have raised two sons (Kurt, b. 1994) and Cody (b. 2002). In addition to music and art, Lori enjoys yoga, skiing, biking, hiking and is a competitive US Masters swimmer. The First Phase Lori earned a PhD in Pharmacology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1991 and worked in an environmental consulting firm in Princeton for 5 years, before the work/life balance became dangerously unstable. Her marriage was in trouble. The toddler she adored was in full time day care. She was working in a high-pressure, non-affirming environment. Lori was miserable. Because she wanted to save her sanity and her marriage, and be the parent she wanted to be, she quit. In the midst of the fear of leaving a secure job, Lori began teaching piano again (a profession she had since age 16). She also began studying piano again. That led to her second phase. The Second Phase Lori began performing classical piano professionally, and over the next 20 years, grew her artistic skills. She became a singer/songwriter and released her first CD two months before delivering their second child. Lori also did community theatre for 11 seasons. She joined a jazz band with her first concert with them being a week after she joined--scary. Gradually, she led or collaborated on several ensembles of her own, including a jazz quartet, a vocal trio, and a two-woman musical theater show, among others. Consequently, she needed to promote the shows, and she found she had a passion for words and spreading the word. Lori is a self proclaimed "incurable connector” and wonders how many tickets she sold or business cards she exchanged in the locker room at her gym! Another love of Lori's is creating fundraising concerts and other impactful events. This love resulted in Lori spending more time producing and promoting events than practicing her craft. When she and her family moved from PA to Montana in 2016, Lori decided to take those skills and use them to champion her colleagues in the performing arts. Ironically, her first client at Open Sky Artists was her classical piano teacher from PA. The Darkness Amidst the Light Despite the passion for what she was doing and the impact she was making for others in the arts, Lori experienced some dark days. After her move to Montana, anxiety and depression resurfaced and powerfully took hold of her. Recovered and thriving, Lori is now on a mission to share her experience and encourage others not to hide or feel shame if they are struggling with mental health challenges. Like Robyn, Lori feels that mental health illnesses are no different than diabetes, cancer or heart disease. They should be discussed and treated. There is no shame in mental illness, nor should there be judgement. The Miraculous Escape As an artist, Lori is a storyteller. Her family members escaped the holocaust of Nazi Germany. Using her talents and gifts, Lori curated a musical to share her family's experiences. She shares her passions and talents in so many ways. Along those lines, as a passionate person, Lori believes that creative thinking allows us to find opportunities in hidden places. In Podcast Episode 65, “Look for a Miraculous Escape BEFORE You Sin,” Kim discusses the importance of looking for a way of escape from temptation BEFORE you fall into sin. The primary scripture text for this episode is Judges 16:1-3, with the focal scriptures of 3: 1 One day Samson went to the Philistine town of Gaza and spent the night with a prostitute. 2 Word soon spread that Samson was there, so the men of Gaza gathered together and waited all night at the town gates. They kept quiet during the night, saying to themselves, “When the light of morning comes, we will kill him.” 3 But Samson stayed in bed only until midnight. Then he got up, took hold of the doors of the town gate, including the two posts, and lifted them up, bar and all. He put them on his shoulders and carried them all the way to the top of the hill across from Hebron. When you are struggling with the deep holes of life, consider praying one or more of these sentence prayers based on God's Word. May I not yield to temptation but please rescue me from the evil one (Matthew 6:13). Please keep me from being enticed and drug away by my own evil desires (James 1:14). Please don't let me give into temptation (Luke 22:40). When I am tempted, please remind me I will not be tempted more than I can stand. Please show me a way so that I can endure. (1 Corinthians 10:13). Strengthen me to keep watch and pray so that I will not give in to temptation. (Matthew 26:41) May I be godly and gently and humbly help others who have fallen into temptation. As I do, please protect me so I do not fall into the same temptation. (Galatians 6:1) The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. (1 Corinthians 10:13) So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.(James 4:7) And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. How did the Lord deliver one man out of the gang life and a criminal history to new life in Jesus? I’ll discuss it with Casey Diaz, author of, “The Shot Caller: A Latino Gangbanger’s Miraculous Escape from a Life of Violence to a New Life in Christ.” Plus: Mayor Pete Buttigieg says he wants Vice President Mike Pence to stop “harming” children by upholding biblical principle on marriage. I’ll offer my response on the Wednesday's JANET MEFFERD TODAY.
Today's Reading Acts 12:1-16- https://www.bible.com/bible/111/ACT12.1-16.NIV This is basically the last mention of Peter in the book of Acts. As we come to the conclusion in this journey through the Life of Peter, consider how you may continue on in your devotional journey.
An interview with UC Santa Cruz Professor Micah Parks of Literature about her new book True Love and Other Dreams of Miraculous Escape (2018, Outpost 19). We discussed her unique upbringing living in a log cabin on a commune and how that sparked her creativity and love of reading and about the writing of her latest book.
Magical and funny, profound and seductive, the linked stories in True Love and Other Dreams of Miraculous Escape explore the life-bending power of love. In these interwoven lives, ardent desire meets a keen sense of reality deep in the heart of progressive California. When Sadie opens a funky bookstore in Santa Cruz, she is swept off her feet by Daniel, a true-blue romantic—athletic, bookish, from Santiago, Chile. Their connection is heady and erotic, and it echoes through the love lives around them: from Harry Houdini’s first encounter with the widow Winchester to the threatening intimacy between a wife and her brother to a grumpy teenager who inspires her divorced parents. Years later, when Sadie and Daniel take an overdue trip to Paris, their blended family doesn't blend so well, sending them back to rediscover their roots. In these interconnected lives, the desire for passion is as strong as the desire to escape, and the terror of claustrophobic connection competes with the deepest human yearning. An intoxicating look at the complexity and simplicity of embracing and running from love. By the award-winning author of What Becomes Us, Micah Perks. Perks is in conversation with Ben Loory, author of the collections Tales of Falling and Flying and Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day.
A focus on the importance of prayer from Acts 12.
In this sermon, we think about how Peter escaped from prison by the miraculous hand of God. We see how the church prayed and how that is an example to us - and how God's purposes are never thwarted!
Acts 12:1-19
As extremist groups surrounded his apartment in Aden, Yemen, Mohammed Al Samawi made a last-ditch appeal for help from his Facebook network. Amazingly, over the course of two weeks, four near-strangers devised a daring mission to lead him to safety — an improbable journey that spanned six technological platforms and ten time zones. Al Samawi shares his moving story in the new book The Fox Hunt, which was picked up last year for a film adaptation by La La Land producer Marc Platt and the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Spotlight, Josh Singer. Al Samawi joined IVY for a live conversation in NYC to tell the tale of his miraculous escape to freedom from war, rebel fighters, and Al-Qaeda extremists.
