In this episode of The Brick Session, Mark Livesey sits down with renowned sports scientist Dr. Lindsey Hunt to dive deep into one of the most critical—and often overlooked—elements of triathlon success: racing in extreme heat and humidity. Whether you're eyeing Kona, Cozumel, or any tropical test of endurance, this conversation is packed with evidence-based insights and practical advice. Dr. Hunt breaks down the science behind heat acclimation: how long it takes, why individual responses vary, and—importantly—whether it works. If you've ever wondered how to train smart for sweltering conditions or how to adapt your approach when the mercury rises, this is one episode you won't want to miss. Also in this episode. Mark Livesey tackles a tough but timely question: How do young professional triathletes make a living in today's sport? With insights from former pro triathlete Caroline Livesey, the discussion gets straight to the point, breaking down the real economics behind going pro. Mark and Caroline explore the key income streams available to up-and-coming triathletes, including sponsorships, race winnings, appearance fees, coaching, content creation, and more. They don't shy away from the realities—it's a hustle, and financial success often depends on more than just performance.

Conosco aqui, a educadora física, 3. Marten Van Riel joins us today to talk about the craziness of his debut Ironman in Cozumel where he was leading at 165km after having been solo all day before crashing his bike and colliding with a young girl on the side of the bike course. He went on to have the fastest marathon of the day running 2:39 but because of the time spent on the side of the rode he didn't win or get his Ironman World Championship qualifying slot. We hear all the details from Marten in his first podcast since it happened. We also do a season debrief where we talk about his incredible season on the T100 World Tour becoming the first ever world champion and showing everyone that he is a force over middle distance. Nuevo cobro para cruceristas en Cozumel. ¿Impacta en el Turismo? by Joaquín López-Dóriga
Angela and Lindsay Long (coach and athlete of Angela's) join Amy for a race recap of Ironman Cozumel. And although there is talk of the gorgeous swim, the 3 loop bike, and the hot run, the conversation detours into adjacent topics- how to do 3 Ironman races in 4 months, colliding with a truck (!!), and debates on carb consumption and hydration and fueling. So much is covered in this podcast and a massive congrats to both Lindsay and Angela on their strong performances to wrap up their 2025 season. Have a listen!

In July of 1993, professional scuba diver Ken Wilson set out to explore ancient Mayan ruins on the island of Cozumel. But what was supposed to be a simple excursion quickly turned into a fight for survival, finding himself lost in the dense jungle with no sense of direction, no food, and little water. Over the course of 20 grueling days, Ken faced the unthinkable. But through it all, he kept his focus, his will to survive, and eventually, his life.Support us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month, with benefits starting at the $3 tier!Follow us on Instagram at offthetrailspodcastFollow us on Facebook at Off the Trails PodcastIf you have your own outdoor misadventure (or adventure) story that you'd like us to include in a listener episode, send it to us at offthetrailspodcast@gmail.com Please take a moment to rate and review our show, and a big thanks if you already have! The people are so genuine and kind, with a carefree spirit that makes you feel at home. The food is incredible, and the country is steeped in history—from the cities to the monasteries in northern Greece. Then there are the beaches: sandy, pebbled, even black sand beaches. I could go on and on, but truly, Greece has it all. 11:09 I try to put them in the mindset that it's not bad, it's not wrong—it's just different. 15:45 Over the last decade, I've especially learned patience. I grew up with none, but it's become my biggest lesson. 20:22 My best friend is going right before us, and we'll be meeting her there for a few days. I added a note on her itinerary: 'Please bring comfortable shoes, wear a backpack, and don't go there if it's windy! 32:58 Travel is full of ups and downs—they're inevitable with every trip. Where turquoise waters kiss the shore,And golden sands stretch far and free,Cozumel sings, a tale of yore,A paradise where hearts run free. The coral reefs, in colors bright,Beneath the waves, a world untold,A dance of fish, in purest light,Where secrets of the deep unfold. Palm trees sway in gentle breeze,Their shadows paint the sunlit earth,A tranquil hum, a life at ease,Where every moment finds its worth. The sunset spills in hues so warm,A canvas of the sky and sea,As night descends in softest form,The stars above, a canopy. The island whispers ancient lore,In every breeze, in every tide,Cozumel's charm, forever more,A beauty that will not subside. From Mayan ruins standing proud,To vibrant streets where cultures blend,Cozumel's soul speaks clear and loud,A place where hearts and nature mend.

This week, my guest is Orvis rod designer and my fishing buddy Shawn Combs [14:05], who uses the new Helios rods as an example of how a new rod series is developed. What kind of input goes into a new rod design? Why do we keep making new rod series? How are they tested? How many prototypes of a new rod are built before we decide on the final model? The Fly Box is short this week because I've caught up with questions and am doing this before I leave for a couple weeks. But they're good ones, including: Do I need to set the hook in a different manner with a glass fly rod? Is there something about the new Helios rods that is not covered on the web site and catalog copy? Is there a place where I can still pick up a Helios 3 rod? I am going to Cozumel and will be wade fishing from the beach. What should I know in advance? A listener gives some great tips on fly fishing for trout in Missouri
