This week we're joined by comedian Jeremy Bent. Jeremy lives in LA, but we found him here, at a local school, working with middle schoolers to develop their comedic writing skills. We talk with Jeremy about that project, along with how his career got started, what it was like to be a freelancer for The Onion, some of the projects he's working on now (including "Tooning Out The News" that airs on Wednesdays after The Daily Show on Comedy Central) and what projects he has lined up for the near future. Mission to Zyxx is one of my favorite and highly bingeable podcasts. It’s a sci-fi audio drama (although very much a comedy) about a ragtag crew of space adventurers ranging from humans to aliens to robots. The actors are all improvisers. Every story and every line of dialogue is made up on the spot, but when layered with stereo soundscapes and effects, it sounds like they are worldbuilding on the fly. The show has made me LOL many times with its sly references to established sci-fi franchises, and I’m happy to share it with you. Here is the Mission to Zyxx site for Episode 202: The New Norm [ft. Dru Johnston] with the cast list and other details. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week I'm airing an interview I did last year with my friend Jeremy Bent. Jeremy is primarily a comedian, but he's also a bass player who's played bass in different comedy shows and comedy bands. Jeremy is an amazingly funny dude and it was so fun to talk to him about comedy and the crossover between comedy and music, and to get his perspective as someone who plays bass as a hobby but loves it all the same. Find Jeremy at www.missiontozyxx.space
In this very special interstitial, the crew doesn't go on a mission. Jeremy makes an announcement. Alden adds music. Seth writes an episode summary.
Today we are joined by one of the wonderful hosts of the Mission to Zyxx podcast, Moujan Zolfaghari. She stops in to talk about Elisabeth Moss’ new film, The Invisible Man. And, as always, we’ve got staff picks. In news, Adèle Haenel walks out of the César Awards, the Coronavirus affects the film industry, and, according to Rian Johnson, Apple doesn’t allow the “bad guy” to use iPhones in movies.Staff Picks:Alonso – SafeDrea – Saint FrancesJoelle – Blood on Her NameMoujan – The Fall. With Drea Clark, Alonso Duralde, Joelle Monique, and Moujan Zolfaghari.

I sat down with Jeremy Bent to talk about Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed (1974). This is a riveting science fiction novel about two worlds & societies that have largely existed in isolation until the narrative present, and the story of the physicist, Shevek, who attempts to break down the walls between the two worlds. We talk about the ludicrous flights of fancy this book engages in, such as a society in which a minority of rich people live like kings while the majority are poor people with no prospects of upward mobility. Or, get this, the book posits an Earth that has depleted all its resources and is barely habitable! Jeremy is a hilarious improviser based in New York City, and also founded and performs on the sci-fi improv podcast Mission To Zyxx. Follow him on twitter at @JeremyMBent!
On our first episode Matty welcomes Seth Lind and Moujan Zolfaghari from the new Sci-Fi, improv, comedy podcast Mission To Zyxx.
