My guest Mordy Levine, who along with his coauthor, Lama Lhanang Rinpoche, recently released the book The Beginner's Guide to Karma: How to Live with Less Negativity and More Peace. There's only One and It can't go anywhere."The day my mother died, I wrote in my journal, "A serious misfortune of my life has arrived." I suffered for more than one year after the passing away of my mother. But one night, in the highlands of Vietnam, I was sleeping in the hut in my hermitage. I dreamed of my mother. I saw myself sitting with her, and we were having a wonderful talk. She looked young and beautiful, her hair flowing down. It was so pleasant to sit there and talk to her as if she had never died. When I woke up, it was about two in the morning, and I felt very strongly that I had never lost my mother. The impression that my mother was still with me was very clear. I understood then that the idea of having lost my mother was just an idea. It was obvious in that moment that my mother is always alive in me.I opened the door and went outside. The entire hillside was bathed in moonlight. It was a hill covered with tea plants, and my hut was set behind the temple halfway up. Walking slowly in the moonlight through the rows of tea plants, I noticed my mother was still with me. She was the moonlight caressing me as she had done so often, very tender, very sweet... wonderful! Each time my feet touched the earth I knew my mother was there with me. I knew this body was not mine but a living continuation of my mother and my father and my grandparents and great-grandparents. Of all my ancestors. Those feet that I saw as "my" feet were actually "our" feet. Together my mother and I were leaving footprints in the damp soil.From that moment on, the idea that I had lost my mother no longer existed. "The day my mother died, I wrote in my journal, "A serious misfortune of my life has arrived." I suffered for more than one year after the passing away of my mother. But one night, in the highlands of Vietnam, I was sleeping in the hut in my hermitage. I dreamed of my mother. I saw myself sitting with her, and we were having a wonderful talk. She looked young and beautiful, her hair flowing down. It was so pleasant to sit there and talk to her as if she had never died. When I woke up, it was about two in the morning, and I felt very strongly that I had never lost my mother. The impression that my mother was still with me was very clear. I understood then that the idea of having lost my mother was just an idea. It was obvious in that moment that my mother is always alive in me.I opened the door and went outside. The entire hillside was bathed in moonlight. It was a hill covered with tea plants, and my hut was set behind the temple halfway up. Walking slowly in the moonlight through the rows of tea plants, I noticed my mother was still with me. She was the moonlight caressing me as she had done so often, very tender, very sweet... wonderful! Each time my feet touched the earth I knew my mother was there with me. I knew this body was not mine but a living continuation of my mother and my father and my grandparents and great-grandparents. Of all my ancestors. Those feet that I saw as "my" feet were actually "our" feet. Together my mother and I were leaving footprints in the damp soil.From that moment on, the idea that I had lost my mother no longer existed. Kerry Thomas is an organizing and productivity coach.  She has a lot of different passions, but her favorite is working with offices.  Kerry has some things she needs to get off her chest when it comes to people's “stuff” as they get older.  Let's start with, “what small changes can I implement now that'll make things easier for those we leave behind?”When you have the luxury of helping people through the process of decluttering over time, it can be good and bad.  First, she has seen success when the approach doesn't come from a place of judgment, but when you come at it from a place of improvement.  It doesn't need to come from a place of telling them what to do.  One thing that is helpful is when somebody else does the touching and smelling of clothes, especially.  There are a lot of emotions associated with clothing, so when you're trying to get rid of things, it helps to detach from the emotional side of things a bit.The more things you can do to tap into your subconscious (which is really “running the show”),  you are able to find the emotions around your things.  Feelings are fuel.  This is what's going to get you where you want to go.The reverse happens when we're trying to let go of things and get rid of things.  So, it's very helpful to have an accountability partner or somebody who can help you to avoid that.If you're the helper, it's important to honor the other person's wishes.  With any age, if you go into somebody else's environment, you can't tell what might be somebody's “favorites.”  Duplicates and triplicates are a great place to start when decluttering or getting rid of stuff.Kerry encourages people to do the 90 day test; have a box for the questionable things and let them sit for 90 days.  If you find that you still don't need those things after that time period, it's time to get rid of them.On thing she wants everybody to think about is that when we're going through and helping our aging parents to declutter, it can be a good idea to record the stories that come from the trips down memory lane. This happens often when you have the opportunity to help somebody sift through their stuff, and capturing those memories can make the experience worthwhile. One of the best things you can do for your loved ones is to let them know ahead of time what you want kept in the family, what you want to be donated to specific charities, or if you truly don't care where your things go, let your loved ones know.  If it's appropriate to ask the people who are aging in your life, please ask them that question.  Do the work before it's needed.Make sure you know what accounts are out there and make sure your loved ones have access to them.  This is important for end of life events, or if there's a memory issue.  You can find more about Kerry Thomas and Conquer The Chaos at:ctcorganizing.com*here you can find her TED Talk and other information.Or on Facebook: FB Group: “Less Clutter, More Peace”

Riya Miglani is a Food Allergy Advocate that is doing incredible things. Most recently, she co-authored an illustrated children's book titled “The Hidden Hero.”  She shares the journey, from inspiration through publication and beyond.  Her goal in writing this book was to empower kids to be their own heroes.  She hosts the podcast “Less Panic, More Peace.” which shares food allergies stories, insights, tips, ideas, and helpful lessons to bring a little more peace.  She also belongs to a TED Talk club in school and led her own Talk, “The Psychology of Persuasion.”  Riya has multiple food allergies, and her two siblings also have food allergies.  She talks about her family's food allergy journey.  Having food allergies has bonded them, and they look out for each other and support each other. At the end of 2018, this specific incident changed her perspective on food allergies forever. She had a chocolate from Poland with no English ingredients on it, and asked her friend to read it. As her friend misread the ingredients, she went into anaphylactic shock while losing trust in the people around her. The incredible, Gemma Mae Strohbach, teaches us what it's like living in South Africa where food allergies are not prioritized, how she didn't eat in restaurants for 1 year after the 2018 incident, or even at her Grandma's house on Christmas, and how her 5-year long boyfriend accommodated to her food allergies. I'm very different now with it. Every single day I'm aware so if I feel the anxiety is sort of coming through. If I'm feeling anxious, I understand the physiological response, my body response, so I'm able to work through the steps to calm myself down and do the cognitive therapy to calm myself down. Thoughts on Breathing I have two different ways of breathing. So we have the regular way of breathing, but then we also have our diaphragm breathing and I'm working on my public speaking. I've learned how to speak in an effective way and breathe so that I'm not holding my breath and then talking a lot and then running out of air. So it's interesting you ask that because I've been working for the past few months on improving my breathing when I speak. Suggested Resources Book: The Little Book of Mindfulness: Ten Minutes a Day to Less Stress and More Peace by Dr Patrizia Collard App: Calm Bullying Story This incident happened in 2014 and it actually involved the studio and myself in which I was protested for a week. So this lady had driven by the studio and she looked through the windows. We weren't open at the time and she saw a room full of brass balls. When we have classes, we close the blinds, but during the daytime the blinds are open so you can see inside. And there was a poster of me on the window where I'm holding the pole. It's one of our marketing posters. I'm looking happy and smiley. She was deeply offended and it triggered her. It actually triggered a negative memory she had when she was younger. So in her youth, she unfortunately had a terrible childhood in which she was living on the street, became a prostitute and she was a stripper. And seeing the studio and me on the pole triggered it. So she felt she needed to have the studio shut down, that it wasn't OK and that what I was doing was wrong and she was very upset with it. So first she went on Facebook and in Oakville there is a Facebook group about Oakville which has about 8,000 members on it and that's where she started. So she posted that she needed people to band together to shut down the pole dancing studio and that what I was doing was wrong and I was teaching women to become prostitutes. So she projected by what was happening with her. I was, I was mindful enough to realize what was happening, but we had a situation where I had somebody who was not healthy and happy and if I were to attack her back he would make things worse. So I just, I stood up and I spoke about what the studio was about with more of an education point of view. And then I didn't respond back after that. Well, because there's 8,000 members involved, people jumped on and it went on for like three days of online shaming towards her because she's attacking so people want to fight back. So I had to tell all my students do not participate, do not get involved, leave it be, because we don't want to feed the beast, the social media beast. So my students were very wonderful about it and it faded away. So we didn't participate. we stood back from it. So then after it all calmed down, she decided to stand in front of my business with a sign saying, prostitution is wrong. She would arrive around 9:00 AM and would leave around 4:00 PM. The police arrived the first day and they talked to me about it. And in Canada we have the charter of rights. So she was fully allowed to do that, to stand on public space in front of my business, to promote her agenda about prostitution is wrong and I totally agree, prostitution is wrong. But that's not what we're doing. Whenever people would walk by, she would tell them stuff about me, she would slander, she would say negative things. So the police on the very first day pulled me aside and said, do you have a choice on how you want to handle this? You can either attack back, which will make things worse or you can ignore and we highly recommend you ignore. And so I also spoke to one of our local MPs, a member of parliament, because we all know politicians get protested quite a bit and he advised the same thing. He goes, don't engage, don't participate, don't even look at her when she arrives, go home. And that's what I did every single day. She chose to protest against me during the first week of July, which was the hottest week of the summer. So I went home every single day when she arrived, I would say see you later, get in the car and go home and hang out with my kids and she would stand out in front. So I didn't really, I didn't want to hear what she said about me. I didn't want to know. I just knew, eventually she would move on and in fact, by the end of the week, she called me up on the phone and left a voice message saying that her work was done. My apologies for causing any hardship, any pain. She said I need to move on now. So I'm actually very proud of how I handled that. I was being bullied, but I chose a different path of how to handle it instead of fighting back, I chose peace and not to engage.
