How to Train Your Brain to Race to Your Potential | World Tour Neuroscientist David Spindler, PhD

That Triathlon Show

Play Episode Listen Later May 28, 2026 63:26

Most triathlon training focuses on physiology and skills. Dr. David Spindler argues that the brain is the missing piece, and that you can (and should) train your brain to better process pressure, adapt under stress, and execute under fatigue. This episode will teach you how to do this. Dr. David Spindler is a neuroscientist and cognitive performance specialists who has worked with athletes at the very highest level (including with Sir Mark Cavendish, Sam Laidlow, Chelsea Sodaro, Katie Courtney, and Tom Evans) and across sports from cycling, triathlon and trail running through soccer and Formula 1.  HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS:  The brain's central role in athletic performance: coordination, decision-making, focus, emotional regulation, fatigue perception, and recovery. Allostatic load: why amateur triathletes carry far more cognitive stress than professionals, and how to account for it in training. How the brain controls pacing, and why perceived effort rises and the efficiency of firing muscles drops when the brain decides an effort isn't sustainable. Self-efficacy vs. confidence: why they are different, and how to address a lack of self-efficacy as a triathlete. Self-regulation: why understanding how your brain and body behave under stress matters, and how poor self-regulation undermines both triathlon training and the athlete-coach relationship. Joy and happiness as recovery tools: why they are the most effective mediators of cortisol, and how to find joy and happiness in training and life (it's not the same as dopamine hits)   DETAILED EPISODE SHOWNOTES:  We have detailed shownotes for all of our episodes. The shownotes are basically the podcast episode in written form, that you can read in 5-10 minutes. They are not transcriptions, but they are also not just surface-level overviews. What if the reason you're not getting anything done has nothing to do with laziness, lack of discipline, or poor time management? Brain fog is a biological response to overwhelm, and once you understand what is driving it, clearing it becomes a matter of strategy rather than willpower. On Salad with a Side of Fries, host Jenn Trepeck delivers one of her most personal and practical episodes yet, tracing her own experience of brain fog through months of compounding stress and sharing every tool that helped her climb back out. From targeted nutritional supplements like magnesium, ashwagandha, and activated B vitamins, to the biochemical power of novelty, strength training, and social connection, Jenn lays out a morning, midday, and evening framework built around activation, adaptation, and restoration. This is not a surface-level conversation about productivity hacks. This is the science of resilience building applied to real life, with real results. What You Will Learn in This Episode:✅ Why brain fog is not a discipline problem but a biological response to layered overwhelm, and how the gut-brain connection, postbiotics, and targeted antioxidants work together beneath the surface to restore cognitive function and get your brain fully back online.✅ How movement goes far beyond the gym: why changing your walk route, adding intervals, doing squats before a meeting, and keeping light weights nearby are all proven strategies for increasing blood flow and boosting brain energy throughout the day.✅ Why novelty is one of the most powerful and underused tools for mental clarity, and how activities that demand your full attention, from learning a new language to trying a completely unfamiliar experience, actively protect against cognitive decline and sharpen neural connections.✅ How the foods you eat and the ones you avoid directly shape your brain health, why dark leafy greens, blueberries, and beans support memory and slow cognitive decline, and why ultra-processed foods are directly linked to dementia, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast, hosted by Jenn Trepeck, explores real-life wellness and weight-loss topics, debunking myths, misinformation, and flawed science surrounding nutrition and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.TIMESTAMPS:00:00 Clearing brain fog and restoring mental clarity for real life03:07 Recognizing brain fog through observable behaviors: procrastination, lost productivity, inability to focus, and decision fatigue06:07 The three layers of overwhelm fueling mental fatigue: to-do list stress, emotional trauma, and relentless input overload12:09 The wired-but-tired cycle explained: how burnout, late nights, and disrupted sleep quietly destroy focus and brain energy17:51 Shifting from stimulants to solutions: building daily, calm energy with adaptogens, magnesium, and B vitamins for lasting resilience22:15 Morning activation framework: movement, probiotics, vitamin D3, protein-forward meals, and creatine to power up brain energy25:53 Midday adaptation strategies: breaks, deep breathing, single-tasking, and releasing pressure to force productivity31:19 Evening restoration: how CBD gummies, magnesium, and adaptogenic herbs quiet the mind and support deep restorative sleep34:27 Power up your walk and why strength training and resistance work are non-negotiable for brain health, long-term cognitive function, and longevity37:00 Novelty and new experiences spark brain energy and guard against cognitive decline41:10 Brain-supporting foods explained: dark leafy greens, blueberries, beans, and folate-rich choices that slow cognitive decline44:34 Supplement timing strategy: B complex and adaptogenic herbs in the morning and midday, magnesium and ashwagandha at night45:42 The gut-brain connection: how probiotics, postbiotics, fiber, and antioxidants work together to restore cognitive functionKEY TAKEAWAYS:

Episode Summary: Today we are diving into a topic that affects millions of people who feel stretched too thin and overwhelmed by life. We are talking about real world tools for managing chronic stress and mental fatigue so you can regain clarity, rebuild your strength, and restore your hope. Chronic stress is not simply an inconvenience. It quietly infiltrates every area of life and disrupts sleep, relationships, thought patterns, mood, and even your sense of spiritual connection. Our goal today is to equip you with proven strategies that help you move from exhaustion to renewal so you can thrive again. When mental fatigue sets in and stress feels unending, many people assume that feeling overwhelmed is their new normal. But God offers a better way. You can experience renewed strength, restored clarity, and a calm mind even in the middle of challenging seasons. If you long for sustainable emotional wellness, Christ centered stress management tools, and practical ways to quiet your mind, this episode is for you. We want to help you step out of survival mode and experience the peace that God promises. Today we’re going to be talking about Tools for Managing Chronic Stress and Mental Fatigue. Quotables from the episode: Chronic stress affects the whole person. It impacts the body, mind, emotions, and even our sense of spiritual grounding. As a neuropsychologist, I see how the stress response system affects the brain. When people experience stress for long periods of time, the brain becomes over activated. Concentration decreases. Memory becomes foggy. Emotional regulation becomes harder. We feel more reactive and less resilient. The good news is that the brain is both adaptable and changeable. With consistent tools, we can retrain the mind and restore mental clarity. It is critical to remember that God did not design our bodies to live in chronic stress. Chronic stress is the type of ongoing stress that does not resolve quickly. It comes from situations that continue to require emotional or physical energy without enough recovery time. Chronic stress and mental fatigue are not signs of weakness. They are signs that your body and mind need care. Why does deciding what's for dinner every night feel way harder than making major decisions at work? Here's why decision-making can feel so overwhelming—and what actually helps. You'll learn the psychology behind choice overload, decision fatigue, and regret aversion, and how too many options, depleted mental energy, and fear of future regret can lead to avoidance, default choices, or endless second-guessing. Amy and Margaret share practical tools for simplifying decisions, including narrowing options, offloading choices, and applying frameworks like the Eisenhower Matrix. This episode offers reassurance that decision stress is normal—and actionable ways to reduce it, save your cognitive energy for what matters most, and move forward with more confidence and less regret. Last time, we talked about how we've become tired and wired, constantly "on" with too many mental tabs open. Today, we're diving deeper into the critical question: why does losing our brain's on-off switch matter so much? The answer is simple: it's costing us – in our potential, our satisfaction, and our ability to truly rest.First, we'll explore how the inability to focus hinders our potential. Imagine trying to hit a game-winning shot while distracted by a dozen other things. We've lost the crucial art of dropping everything else to focus on one thing, whether it's a critical work project, quality time with our kids, or even navigating the road safely. When you can't be present, you can't truly excel.Next, we reveal how this constant "on" state sabotages our satisfaction. The male brain, in particular, thrives on making steady progress towards a goal. But when our minds are constantly bombarded by distractions – akin to someone trying to sell you dessert during an intense football practice – we lose the profound satisfaction that comes from focused effort and achievement. This constant mental chatter prevents us from savoring our accomplishments and enjoying the journey. Finally, we'll uncover how losing our on-off switch ruins our rest. We were designed for a natural rhythm of work and rest, reflected in days, weeks, and even seasons. However, modern life has eroded these vital barriers. Our homes have become extensions of our workplaces, and our minds struggle to unplug, leading to a lingering voice of doubt that hinders true mental relaxation. When all parts of life are blended together, nothing has its own distinct time and place, leaving us with a "blended" and often unsatisfying experience.Join us at ThrivingMan.com, where we're dedicated to helping you conquer everyday chaos and build a life you can be proud of. In our next episode, we'll uncover why we find ourselves in this perpetual "on" state and explore the ongoing war on our attention and peace.On-Off Switch, Brain Health, Focus, Attention, Distraction, Productivity, Potential, Satisfaction, Rest, Work-Life Balance, Mental Fatigue, Burnout, Digital Overload, Information Overload, Mental Chatter, Present Moment, Deep Work, ThrivingMan, Men's Health, Personal Development, Self-Improvement, Conquer Chaos, Build a Thriving Life, Cognitive Function, Mental Clarity, Quality of Life, Boundaries, Digital Boundaries, Stress Management, Unplugging, Mental Rest, True Rest, Constant Connection, Mind Management.
