Welcome to the Kickstart Commerce podcast where we share search marketing and domain investing strategies to help grow your business. In today's episode, our guest is Tieshun Roquerre — the CEO of Namebase.io, the premier domain registrar built on top of the new DNS protocol Handshake. Today Tieshun and I dive deep into: How engineering a platform to hawk t-shirts led him to drop out of high school at the age of 16. Tieshun also shares how he and a partner were accepted into the Y Combinator after launching a recruiting startup for software engineering teams to grow via employee referrals. In addition, we discuss the inner workings, and challenges of birthing Namebase.io only weeks before receiving a $100,000 Thiel Fellowship grant, yet a few months after dropping out of MIT. We also chat about the origins of Handshake, and how both decentralized and centralized web ecosystems could possibly coexist. And last but not least, Tieshun drops nothing but nuggets about the Handshake domain auction process, including the pros and cons of becoming a registry versus a Handshake domain owner/developer as well as other use cases. Namebase is a top-level domain (TLD) name registrar that operates on the Handshake blockchain. It creates an ecosystem of TLDs that may be bought and sold using an on-chain auction mechanism. It takes a different approach to other decentralized domain name systems as Namebase is compatible with the ICANN namespace, the organization governs domain names globally. Users may register TLDs that don't yet exist in the ICANN namespace, like .epicenter or .ethereum, for example, creating the opportunity for new niche domain registrars to emerge. Today on the podcast, Tieshun Roquerre and Brandon Zemp explore decentralized domains. Tieshun is the founder and CEO of Namebase, a company that allows you to leverage the Handshake network to create your own domain name and extension. For normal domains, you pay companies in order to rent it out. You don’t actually own the domain. Because of this, you can get blocked, throttled, censored, deplatformed, you name it! That’s why it’s vital to own your own domain on the blockchain so nobody can control you and your online presence in the future. Handshake is a decentralized, permissionless naming protocol where every peer is validating and in charge of managing the root DNS naming zone with the goal of creating an alternative to existing Certificate Authorities and naming systems. Names on the internet (top level domains, social networking handles, etc.) ultimately rely upon centralized actors with full control over a system which are relied upon to be honest, as they are vulnerable to hacking, censorship, and corruption. Handshake aims to experiment with new ways the internet can be more secure, resilient, and socially useful with a peer-to-peer system validated by the network’s participants. In this interview, Steve sits down with Tieshun Roquerre CEO of Namebase. The platform is an exchange, cloud wallet, and registrar for Handshake (HNS) names. Handshake is a decentralized, permissionless naming protocol where every peer is validating and in charge of managing the root DNS naming zone with the goal of creating an alternative to existing Certificate Authorities and naming systems. Names on the internet (top-level domains, social networking handles, etc.) ultimately rely upon centralized actors with full control over a system. (GoDaddy, etc) Handshake aims to experiment with new ways the internet can be more secure, resilient, and socially useful with a peer-to-peer system validated by the network's participants. Alphabet Soup "What's in a name?" When William Shakespeare wrote this question for Juliet Capulet in "Romeo and Juliet," it was a vehicle to release the characters from the bondage of their family names. While that undoubtedly worked as a theme in this classic tragedy, good old Bill didn't publish the work untitled because he knew how important a name really is when trying to draw patrons into a theater, customers into a store or buyers to a product. That's why a name in today's high pressure retail world has never been so critical. With a cornucopia of seemingly endless products and advertisers blanketing a consumer's every waking moment, you've got to machete through the clutter to make a name memorable. This is where some critics believe many of today's automakers have fallen short. From the "alphabet soup" of certain luxury brands to the head-scratching monikers of some midsize fare, customers sometimes don't know if they're buying a car or a croissant. So this is where a company like Namebase, Inc. comes along. This New York firm specializes in designing a name to a product so they fit in a variety of ways. It has clients in a number of industries and has named everything from goods that you wear, to products you consume, and most importantly for this show, those that you park in your garage. Joining John McElroy on this week's panel to discuss the auto industry name game is Nina Beckhardt, the president and creative director of Namebase, Inc., Jean Halliday from Advertising Age and Peter De Lorenzo of Autoextremist.com.

Some car names roll easily off the tongue while others can be a mouthful. So what’s the best strategy to go with when naming a car? That’s the topic of discussion on this edition of Autoline EXTRA as John sits down to talk with Nina Beckhardt, the president of Namebase, a company that specializes in naming products, including cars. They discuss what automakers Namebase has worked with and what vehicles they’ve named. The conversation then moves to the importance of having a car name that will not only work in the U.S. but outside of it and also if there are any advantages to changing a name of a vehicle that is already established in the market. Joining John in the discussion are Jean Halliday from Advertising Age magazine and Peter De Lorenzo from Autoextremist.com.
