"Sasquatch Sunset" had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it polarized audiences with its unique vision from the Zellner Brothers. Told almost without any dialogue, the actors were completely covered head to toe in makeup to become Sasquatches, and they take us on an unforgettable journey only David and Nathan Zellner could provide. Makeup and Hair Designer Steve Newburn was kind enough to spend a few minutes speaking with us about his work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now available to watch at home on physical, digital, and VOD and is up for your consideration for all eligible categories at this year's Academy Awards, including Best Makeup & Hairstyling. Lucy Fenwick Elliott talks to the Zellner brothers, David and Nathan, about their new film Sasquatch Sunset, recorded in the bustling Members' Bar at Picturehouse Central, following it's UK premiere at Sundance London in June 2024. In the misty forests of North America, a family of Sasquatches—possibly the last of their enigmatic kind— embark on an absurdist, epic, hilarious, and ultimately poignant journey over the course of one year. These shaggy and noble giants fight for survival as they find themselves on a collision course with the ever-changing world around them. Starring Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road, American Honey) and Academy Award-Nominee Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland, The Social Network), acclaimed directors David and Nathan Zellner (Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter) bring you the greatest Bigfoot story ever told. There's something to be said when actors and filmmakers come up with an….interesting idea and they pull off the unthinkable (or unfilmmable), fully committing to “the bit”. These are two of those films. We have David Lowery's “A Ghost Story” (2017) vs. David and Nathan Zellner's “Sasquatch Sunset” (2024). A ghost in a bedsheet. Sasquatches […]
Sasquatch Sunset is a bold and beautiful film loaded with absurd comedy and quiet poignancy that revels in its feral nature, but also boasts a surprisingly tender humanity. Like the mythical creature it's named after, the film is a rarity, a one-of-kind experience that you don't get every day (or possibly ever again) — but it's the type of swing-for-the-fences project that we'd love to see more of, especially with a theater with a packed house. We were fortunate enough to secure tickets to this magical and majestic lil indie, which we absolutely adored, and the screening was made all the more entertaining and charming because co-director and star Nathan Zellner & composers The Octopus Project dropped by to answer audience questions and tell anecdotes from the film's production. Caution: You're entering spoiler territory. Proceed at your own risk.
Directors David and Nathan Zellner discuss their new film, Sasquatch Sunset, with fellow Director James Ponsoldt in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, they discusses working with actors who are performing in full makeup, their use of live animals throughout the film, and utilizing a score that integrates the sounds of nature as an instrument. The film tells the story of a family of sasquatches living in the misty forests of North America. Over the course of one year, they embark on an absurdist, epic, hilarious, and ultimately poignant journey as they fight for survival in an ever-changing world. David and Nathan Zellners' latest feature, ‘Sasquatch Sunset,' is an unconventional story about a family of sasquatches living their lives in the woods of California's Humboldt County. The film's presentation has qualities not much different than popular live nature cams you'll find today, making for a narrative that's less to do with structure and more focused on a “day in the life” of a fictional creature. Today on FilmWeek, we hear about the process of filming “Sasquatch Sunset” with David and Nathan Zellner.
Trey Elling chats with the cast & writers/directors at the SXSW world premiere of SASQUATCH SUNSET. The film hits theaters on April 19th. Guests include: Jesse Eisenberg (0:00) David Zellner (0:49) Nathan Zellner (1:16) Christophe Zajac-Denek (1:49)
On episode 3, Fresh Fiction's Preston Barta and James Cole Clay discuss what's happening this week at the cinema and on television. We also have filmmaker and scientists interviews to share. So, pull up and chair and listen in! 'Sasquatch Sunset' stars Jesse Eisenberg, Christophe Zajac-Denek, and Nathan Zellner — who co-directed with brother and writer David Zellner — join the show to discuss this weird, absurd, surprisingly moving and beautiful film about a family of Sasquatches trying to survive the year in a changing world. And since they filmed the production in Bigfoot country of Willow Creek, California, they also discuss their own potential Squatchy sightings, or being mistaken for a real Bigfoot while in costume. This week we're excited to present two conversations, the first from the 61st New York Film Festival with Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell director Pham Thien An and the second with Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder, Benny Safdie and Executive Producer Dave McCary of the new Showtime series The Curse. Winner of the prestigious Camera d'Or for best first film at this year's Cannes Film Festival, the enthralling Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell from Vietnamese filmmaker Pham Thien An is a reverie on faith, loss, and nature expressed with uncommon invention and depth. It's a simple tale told with visual complexity: after a car accident claims the life of his sister-in-law and leaves his 5-year-old nephew an orphan, a thirty something man named Thien (Le Phong Vu) leaves Saigon for a trip back to his rural hometown. During his meditative, wandering visit, Thien wrestles with his own agnosticism in the face of others' religious beliefs, summons memories of his long-disappeared brother, and reconnects with a former girlfriend who now lives as a nun at a Christian church and school. With its drifting camera, evocative use of natural light, and gratifying perambulatory nature, this is a film with the power to readjust one's perceptions of the world around us. An NYFF61 Currents selection. In this brilliantly discomfiting collaboration between Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, Fielder and Emma Stone play married entrepreneurs (don't call them gentrifiers!) who flip houses and convert them into eco-friendly homes for the struggling residents of Española, New Mexico—all for an HGTV-style reality show. Following the world premieres of episodes 1–3 at the 61st New York Film Festival, Film at Lincoln Center is pleased to present the remaining seven episodes from this genre-defying, riotously funny series, directed by Fielder and David and Nathan Zellner. An NYFF61 Spotlight selection. Get tickets to Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, opening at Film at Lincoln Center on Jan. 19: filmlinc.org/cocoon
It's a BEHIND THE LENS that's out of this world thanks to former astronaut and "Global Space Statesman" BUZZ ALDRIN, writer/director MICHAEL GRODNER, and writers/directors/actors DAVID ZELLNER and NATHAN ZELLNER as we look to the stars, the world of punk rock, and a wild western! First up we take a peek into the stars and space exploration with our pre-recorded interview with BUZZ ALDRIN. A sit-down exclusive that preceded film critic debbie elias moderating an intimate Q&A with Buzz on June 21 for the premiere of THE MAN WHO UNLOCKED THE UNIVERSE (a fascinating documentary on Ulugh Beg whose interest and work in astronomy pre-dated that of Galileo by 150 years and set the stage for much of what has come since in our journey to the stars), take a listen as Buzz talks about his latest endeavor, The Human SpaceFlight Institute, and his thoughts on our trajectory to Mars. Then writer/director MICHAEL GRODNER joins BTLRadioShow to talk about his feature directorial debut, THE ICARUS LINE MUST DIE. A renowned director of music videos and creator of DirectyLaundry.TV, Michael continues his longtime love of music and exploration of the visual medium with this narrative feature co-written and starring JOE CARDAMONE, longtime frontman of punk band The Icarus Line. From a true black and white visual palette to non-actors to the affability of Cardamone and the ease and relatability of the story, Michael goes in-depth into the making of ICARUS with a refreshing candor and energy. And then sit back and take a listen to our exclusive interview with filmmakers DAVID ZELLNER and NATHAN ZELLNER as hilarity ensues talking the wild, wacky, and wonderful revisionist western DAMSEL. Co-directors, co-writers and two of the film's stars, the brothers extraordinaire cover everything from their love of classic westerns (and Budd Boetticher) to location shooting to story to miniature horses, chickens, colors, rowboats and coastlines (in a western, yes!), to directing and acting at the same time, and more. The follow-up to their award-winning indie darling "Kumiko The Treasure Hunter", David and Nathan are an effervescent delight! http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

From their homes in Austin, TX, David and Nathan Zellner have been making weird and funny films since the 1990s. Their first two features PLASTIC UTOPIA and FRONTIER were extremely under the radar, even for film festivals. Then they went on a long run of making entertaining shorts starting around 2002, finding a cult comedy fan base. After playing Sundance every year since with shorts and their feature GOLIATH, they will be premièring their new feature KID-THING there next January. We talk about the glory of making a film on VHS in-camera, being featured extras in SALO, working with chickens, cats and sharks, and how they got back to their roots with SASQUATCH BIRTH JOURNAL 2.
