FRIDAY FAMILY FILM NIGHT

In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing WICKED LITTLE LETTERS (2023), from director Thea Sharrock with a screenplay by Jonny Sweet.  Scandal and outrage tear the small English town of Littlehampton apart as extremely vulgar letters begin first appearing and targeting the Swan household, and in particular, Edith (Olivia Colman), and rowdy Rose (Jessie Buckley) is soon charged.  But once the bawdy letter writer targets more of the local's mailboxes and suspecting there's more here than meets the eye, a gaggle of the town's women - Gladys (Anjana Vasan), Mabel (Eileen Atkins), Ann (Joanna Scanlan) and Kate (Lolly Adefope) - are soon on the case to solve this mystery.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 40 m, is rated R and is currently streaming on Netflix.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. This episode of the podcast goes out to a very formidable woman, colleague and friend - HBD Christina D! #WickedLittleLetters  #Thea Sharrock  #JonnySweet  #OliviaColman  #Edith  #JessieBuckley  #Rose  #TimothySpall  #Edward  #GemmaJones  #Victoria  #AnjanaVasan  #Gladys  #EileenAtkins  #Mabel  #JoannaScanlan  #Ann  #LollyAdefope  #Kate  #AlishaWeir  #Nancy  #MalachiKirby  #Bill  #HughSkinner  #ConstablePapperwick  #PaulChahidi  #ConstableSpedding  #StrangerThanFiction  #TrueStory  #FemaleFilmmakerFriday  #FridayFamilyFilmNight --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jokagoge/support

A mix-and-match episode of BEHIND THE LENS this week as w/d/e/actor RICHARD RYAN joins us talking about ART OF DECEPTION. Plus, my exclusive interview with director THEA SHARROCK discussing the wickedly delicious WICKED LITTLE LETTERS. First up is my prerecorded exclusive interview with director THEA SHARROCK go in-depth on one of the most hilarious films you will see all year – WICKED LITTLE LETTERS. I laughed so hard that I had to watch the film twice to hear all of the dialogue. Boasting a first-rate cast with Olivia Coleman, Jessie Buckley, Timothy Spall, Gemma Jones, Eileen Atkins, Joanna Scanlon, and Anjana Vasan, with a script by Jonny Sweet, WICKED LITTLE LETTERS is quite simply, perfection. Based on a true event from the 1920's United Kingdom, foul language itself becomes a character thanks to the verbatim verbiage of the profane letters at the heart of this tale, which is then punctuated with outstanding production values and performances while also addressing themes as topical today as in 1920 – freedom of speech, oppression, workplace discrimination, socio-economic discrimination, discrimination against women, and overall misogyny. Then take a listen as the man wearing all the hats, RICHARD RYAN, joins us talking about his latest film, the action-packed thriller ART OF DECEPTION. Talking about choosing collaborators, developing the script, a prolonged "part-time" shooting schedule, post-production, and more, Richard covers his roles as producer, writer, director, actor, editor, line producer, post-production supervisor, VFX, and the inherent challenges he faced in bringing ART OF DECEPTION to life. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Meantime, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he's pressing ahead with plans to evacuate more than a million civilians from Gaza's southern city of Rafah, before ramping up his offensive on Hamas. Critics say it will only make the humanitarian catastrophe worse. It has been almost two years since the death of The Wanted star Tom Parker after he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour in 2020 aged 33. His wife, Kelsey Parker, announced last month that, after a lot of reflection, it was time to take off her wedding rings. Kelsey tells Anita Rani about the decision and how she has dealt with her grief. The Ukrainian government says it has identified 20,000 children who have been abducted by Russian forces. This week saw 11 Ukrainian children reunited with their families. The BBC's Hague Correspondent, Anna Holligan, and filmmaker Shahida Tulaganova, who directed the ITV documentary Ukraine's Stolen Children, discuss. Wicked Little Letters is a new black comedy film set in Littlehampton in the 1920s. It follows two neighbours, deeply conservative Edith Swan played by Olivia Colman and rowdy Irish single mother Rose Gooding played by Jessie Buckley. When Edith and other residents begin to receive poisonous pen letters full of obscenities, potty mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The director, Thea Sharrock joined Emma Barnett to discuss this true story, and the parallels with trolling on social media today. How do black girls and women experience education in Britain today? Sociologist Dr April-Louise Pennant of Cardiff University joined Emma to discuss why Black Caribbean girls are excluded from school at double the rate of white girls and why intersectionality means the issue of afro hair continues to affect black girls' education today. She explores these issues and more in her book, Babygirl, You've Got This! Experiences of Black Girls and Women in the English Education System. The comedy and acting star Aisling Bea grew up in County Kildare in Ireland and in 2011 became the first woman for 20 years to win the prestigious stand-up competition So You Think You're Funny? Does religion dictate politics or does politics dictate religion? Is success achieved through strategy or spirituality? Should the king bear moral responsibility for his soldiers' behavior in battle? Shakespeare shot to fame in the 1590s by tackling the critical questions of his day in dramas depicting the inner lives of medieval English monarchs. The story centers around Ivan, a silverback gorilla who lives in a cage as the star of a struggling animal show at a suburban shopping center called the Big Top Mall & Video Arcade at Exit 8. Ivan's main schtick is to roar and look intimidating, but behind the scenes, he is a thoughtful and sensitive soul. Other talented animals under the care of beleaguered ringleader Mack include a baseball-playing chicken, a sassy poodle, a bunny, a seal, a parrot, and an elderly elephant named Stella, plus a stray mutt called Bob. Ivan befriends the young daughter of the mall cleaner who hands him supplies to draw, and it becomes something he takes an interest in doing, which has Mack seeing dollar signs to save his floundering circus attraction. An adorable baby elephant named Ruby arrives to become the latest attraction, under the tutelage and loving guidance of Stella. The drawing and painting, plus Ruby's arrival, trigger Ivan's memories of his childhood of freedom in the wild with his family, and Stella doesn't want Ruby to live a sheltered life as she has had. Ivan plans to break free and deliver Ruby to a life of freedom. Featuring Bryan Cranston, Ariana Greenblatt, Ramon Rodriguez, Owain Arthur as live actors. Thea Sharrock was brought up on The Ramones. She cut her directorial teeth in theatre, becoming the youngest ever artistic director at a British theatre when she took over at the Southwark Playhouse at the tender age of 24. She went on to direct Happy Now? at the National Theatre, before taking Equus to New York in 2008 - with Daniel Radcliffe making his Broadway debut. In 2009, she directed a production of As You Like It at Shakespeare's Globe. In 2010, she directed Keira Knightley and Damian Lewis in The Misanthrope, then Benedict Cumberbatch in the Olivier-winning revival of After the Dance – before moving to TV with Tom Hiddlestone's Henry V for the BBC. This was beautifully scored by Adrian Johnston - whose work features prominently in this episode. Her debut feature film Me Before You is a romantic drama starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, with a soundtrack featuring Ed Sheeran, Max Jury, Jack Garratt and The 1975 - and a score by the legendary Craig Armstrong (Romeo and Juliet, Moulin Rouge, Love Actually). Again, there's plenty of Craig's music to enjoy here.

Get ready to weep. Jojo Moyes' 9th novel, Me Before You, became a runaway bestseller, selling over 5 million copies around the globe. As Vanity Fair put it: “It’s an existential work that’s masquerading as a beach read.” Now the author of 13 novels, the film version of Me Before You marks a first: Jojo Moyes' very first screenplay - the naturally visual writer adapted her own novel for the big screen (and by all accounts, thoroughly enjoyed the process). A LitLovers selection, Hollister & O'Toole discuss both the book and the movie - film directed by Thea Sharrock; starring Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) and Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games). Listen in; we promise to tell you something good.

Playwright Peter Shaffer is remembered by theatre critic Michael Billington and director Thea Sharrock, who worked with him on the revival of Equus in 2007. In a rare interview, American novelist Don DeLillo talks to Samira Ahmed about his new novel Zero K which explores cryogenics, immortality and death. New Blood, is the latest series from Anthony Horowitz, creator of Foyle's War and the Alex Rider novels. In it, two junior investigators for the police and the Serious Fraud Office, Rash and Stefan, are brought together on television for the first time, linked by two seemingly unrelated cases. Beth Orton has ditched the acoustic guitar and folk songs for her new album Kidsticks which is mostly composed from electronic loops, drum machines and keyboards. She describes the freedom of creating music without any expectations.
