In the conversation, they discusses working with actors who are performing in full makeup, their use of live animals throughout the film, and utilizing a score that integrates the sounds of nature as an instrument. The film tells the story of a family of sasquatches living in the misty forests of North America. Over the course of one year, they embark on an absurdist, epic, hilarious, and ultimately poignant journey as they fight for survival in an ever-changing world. Join Alex as he takes a solo look at the prophetic alternate reality in The Circle (2017), a film about a tech company and social media conglomerate that is parts Apple and other parts Facebook. The film, directed by James Ponsoldt and starring Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, Karen Gillan, John Boyega, and Patton Oswalt, explores the chaotic world of a tech company that creates technology to link everyone together and put cameras all over the world. You know, your typical data-farming and unregulated surveillance we've all come to integrate into our lives 24/7. There are a ton of psych concepts easily accessed through the blunt, low-hanging fruit conundrums our characters find themselves. Alex identified five strong concepts presented throughout — and he's going to share them in the episode and then share the episode through ... social media! Although Marvel initially planned to release Fantastic Four in late 2024, it recently delayed it and several MCU projects. Instead of launching on Nov. 8, 2024, the Fantastic Four comes out on Feb. 14, 2025. Ant-Man 4 Conversations Already Happening at Marvel Studios (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/movies/news/ant-man-4-conversations-marvel-studios/ With Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania -- the third film in Marvel Studios' Ant-Man saga -- drawing ever closer to its theatrical release, producer Stephen Broussard has confirmed that hushed conversations regarding a fourth entry are already taking place. "We're already thinking about it," Broussard told ComicBook.com. "It's like, every movie's its own battle and you bear the scars of making it and wanting to make it great. But hope springs eternal and you start to put yourself back together after the journey of making the movie. You're like, 'Yeah, what if we did X and what if we did Y?' Like the wheels start turning, you can't help yourself. I don't want to say anything about specifically what those are, but yeah, you can't help yourself. Those conversations, those whispers have already started to happen between myself and [Ant-Man series director] Peyton [Reed] and [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige]." Bob Iger Says Kevin Feige Was Almost Fired From Marvel in 2015 https://www.superherohype.com/movies/526377-bob-iger-says-kevin-feige-was-almost-fired-from-marvel-in-2015 It's hard to imagine what the Marvel Cinematic Universe would look like without Kevin Feige, since he has been guiding the studio since its inception. But if controversial Marvel Entertainment Chairman Isaac Perlmutter had his way eight years ago, Feige would have been out. Newly-reinstated Disney CEO Bob Iger claims that Perlmutter wanted to remove Feige as the president of Marvel Studios back in 2015. However, Iger intervened on Feige's behalf and prevented this from happening. Marvel fans have heard a version of this story before. In 2020, Mark Ruffalo told The Independent that Feige was ready to walk away from the studio of his own free will after the first Avengers movie hit theaters in 2012. Because apparently, Perlmutter (who still oversaw Marvel's film projects at the time) shot down Feige's ideas to make the MCU a more inclusive space for female, Black, and LGBT superheroes. It wasn't until 2015 that corporate restructuring took Perlmutter out of the equation and allowed Feige to directly report to then-Disney chairman Alan Horn. This paved the way for films like Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Eternals to finally get the green light. However, the bit about Perlmutter actually trying to oust Feige from the studio is brand new information. Iger dropped this bombshell while speaking with CNBC about Wendy's Company chairman Nelson Peltz's recently-failed bid to get a seat on Disney's board, which Perlmutter supported. When asked why Perlmutter was so insistent on having Peltz join the company, Iger remarked that the pair have “a curious dynamic.” See also https://www.cbr.com/kevin-feige-almost-fired-marvel-boss-ike-perlmutter-bob-iger-disney/ DISNEY+ Marvel's ‘Wonder Man' Series Sets ‘The Spectacular Now' Director James Ponsoldt (EXCLUSIVE) https://discussingfilm.net/2023/02/03/marvels-wonder-man-series-sets-the-spectacular-now-director-james-ponsoldt-exclusive/ Marvel Studios has enlisted The Spectacular Now filmmaker James Ponsoldt to direct multiple episodes of Disney+'s developing live-action Wonder Man series. Ponsoldt is in active negotiations with Marvel Studios to join the Wonder Man series' directorial lineup, reports Discussing Film. The task will have him working alongside an executive producer in Destin Daniel Cretton. It has also been revealed that the studio is currently planning to start production by the end of March 2023. This marks Ponsoldt's first venture into the superhero genre, after previously directing episodes for critically-acclaimed shows like Shameless and Master of None. Hawkeye Spinoff Echo Brings a Unique Tone to the MCU, Like Werewolf By Night Did https://www.cbr.com/echo-hawkeye-spinoff-unique-tone-werewolf-by-night-mcu/ The producer of Echo explained how the series will be different from other stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interview with Collider, Stephen Broussard was asked how production is going on the recently delayed Echo series. "[Production] is going well," he answered. "It's very different. Like, talking about Werewolf By Night to this. It's a very different tonal sort of thing. I don't want to say too much because there's not a whole lot out there in the world, but it feels very grounded, it feels very spiritual in ways that feel fresh for us. [Alaqua Cox] as the lead is incredibly compelling. I'm sort of hard-pressed to think of something that it feels like outside in the broader realm of the MCU, let alone within what we've done here. So stay tuned on that really cool stuff." In 1996 following the release of the critically-acclaimed post-modernist Magnus Opus "Infinite Jest," Rolling Stone journalist David Lipsky (played by Jesse Eisenberg) set out to interview author David Foster Wallace (played by Jason Segal). David Foster Wallace nears the end of his book tour and is dealing with newfound fame and respect from the literary world. Over those days, Lipsky finds a person who is dealing with much more than revelatory success, and has many philosophical conversations that dig deep at the author inside of him. Although the article was never released, Lipsky wrote a book on this encounter in 2010 after David Foster Wallace's suicide in 2008. Directed by James Ponsoldt and written by Donald Marguilies, this 2015 A24 film covers that memoir. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/a24otr/support

We continue our series going through the entire catalog of A24's films. On this episode we are looking at 2013's The Spectacular Now, directed by James Ponsoldt. The film is a coming of age romantic drama about Sutter, played by Miles Teller, who despite being popular has no direction in his life and showing signs of being a burgeoning alcoholic. He meets Aimee, played by Shailene Woodley, who seems to have her life together but isn't quite out going enough as she falls for Sutter. Joining Dakota and Rachel is Brodie Cotnam, a screenwriter and author. He wrote the book Reality TV and Crack: A User's Guide to an Utterly Useless Existence... and can be heard on The 4th Line Podcast. Our double bill pairings include Edge of Seventeen (Dakota), 500 Days of Summer (Rachel) and The Way Way Back (Brodie). Have your hip flasks and 7-up on standby because this episode we're covering The Spectacular Now, written by Tim Tharp and adapted in 2013 by James Ponsoldt. We discuss cringey lunches, the pitfalls of first person narratives, and of course the spectacular (trainwreck) Sutter.
Recorded on August 14, 2021. The first episode of the podcast without one of our usual co-hosts (come back soon Pete), John brings back recurring guest Will Bodenman for the usual, another dose of discussion around revolutionary production company A24. This third volume in the A24 sub-series covers directors that have done multiple films for A24, including Noah Baumbach, Daniel Scheinert, Sofia Coppola, and James Ponsoldt. Eight films are covered in total, two apiece from each director. The directors' unique approaches are covered, as are some of the absurdities within the films and their creative processes. It quickly becomes clear Ponsoldt reigns supreme. Stick around for the cringe as well as an ending discussion about the hidden gem of the week, a personal favorite of John. 0:25- Intro 0:41- Special Guest Introduction 1:46- “While We're Young” 9:35- "De Palma" 15:56- “Swiss Army Man” 21:54- "The Death of Dick Long" 27:54- "The Bling Ring" 34:14- "On the Rocks" 40:10- James Ponsoldt: A24 Stud 41:51- “The Spectacular Now” 48:14- HIDDEN GEM OF THE WEEK 1:00:57- Outro
You can almost time it. When a hometown kid arrives, the “we knew her when” pieces aren’t far behind. Shortly after The Help made Octavia Spencer famous, The Birmingham News interviewed Jefferson Davis High School guidance counselor Mrs. Evelyn Moore. “Whatever she did, she did it well and she was never shy. You knew she just had it…there was something about Octavia that stood out and everyone knew she would be something.” Evelyn Moore knew it. The Help writer/director Tate Taylor knew it. What took the rest of us so long? Octavia Spencer graduated ol’ Jefferson Davis in 1988. She was one of seven kids raised by her mom Dellsena Spencer, who worked as a maid and died when Spencer was a teenager. She went on to Auburn University, where you might be surprised to learn she did not study to become an RN, considering it’s a job she’s done between 30 and 40 times on screen, along with an almost equal number of largely nameless cashiers and security guards. Spencer actually majored in English with a double minor in journalism and theater, and the role she originally planned for herself was behind the camera. She worked in casting on a number of local Alabama productions and finally asked to audition for the role of a political agitator in Joel Schumacher’s A Time to Kill. “Joel said, ‘No honey, your face is too sweet. You can be Sandy [Bullock]’s nurse,’” Spencer recalls. Well, there you have it. Her friend and fellow Southerner Tate Taylor encouraged her to move to L.A. in 1997 to pursue acting, and she quickly dotted scores of movies and TV shows, most often in the aforementioned capacities. As briefly or namelessly as she might have appeared, she grabbed us every time. Her face is sweet, but we learned it could morph in a moment to comic wide-eyed disbelief, steely don’t-screw-with-me resolve, wry skepticism, or genuine warmth – making her one of the best reactors in the business. Her roles in Big Momma's House, Miss Congeniality 2, Beauty Shop, Moesha, Chicago Hope, and Ugly Betty, (to name 6 out of nearly 100), were often cited as one of their bright spots, and Entertainment Weekly named her one of Hollywood’s 25 funniest women. Yet after 15 years, most of us still knew her as, “Oh yeah, that funny, sassy black lady.” Then came her appearance as the funny, sassy maid Minny Jackson in The Help, a role that was hers before the screenplay was ever written. When the author of the novel it was based on was having difficulty finding the character’s voice, she called her friend Octavia for help. When Spencer finally embodied Minny on the screen, The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “Spencer’s scrappy Minny Jackson provides not only comic relief but a feistiness that shows that some maids found the gumption and means to get back at overbearing employers. Hers is a great character, the antithesis of Gone With the Wind’s Mammy, and she nearly upends this movie with her righteous sass.” You know the story from there. More raves, wide recognition and an Oscar ensued, and voilà! – no more nurse roles. No, now she was being offered maids. And the offers were substantial, but Spencer knew she had to start saying no to stereotypes to continue growing as an artist, and that she’d need to step outside the studios to show what she could do. She appeared in “Smashed,” James Ponsoldt’s 2012 rumination on alcoholism, and NPR called out her bitingly emotional performance as the mother of Oscar Grant, the young black man shot by a white Oakland transit officer in Fruitvale Station. Then came the dystopian sci-fi Snowpiercer and 2015’s Black or White, in which Spencer starred opposite Kevin Costner, playing Rowna Jeffers, the protective grandmother of a biracial girl. “Ms. Spencer turns the strict, truth-telling Rowena into a mighty force,” said The New York Times. “Her wide-eyed stare gives her the gravity of an all-seeing sage who doesn’t miss a trick and is not afraid to speak her mind. Rowena may be a clichéd Earth Mother, but Ms. Spencer imbues her with a fierce severity.” She stepped back into studio films in a big, Oscar-nominated way with Hidden Figures, playing mathematician Dorothy Vaughan. Despite her reluctance to do period films (no “period” to date having been particularly uplifting to the African- American experience), her anger made her unable to resist. She thought a story about black women working for NASA in the ’60s had to be fiction. No – it was just one of many real stories that never get told. Despite the range of roles she’s being offered now, Spencer’s joked that she’s yet to play anyone remotely like herself, a single, rom-com lovin’ kinda lady. But she sees one that very much fits the bill. At this year’s Makers conference she told Gloria Steinem “The role I'm destined to play is to be one of the greatest producers in Hollywood. It's a huge undertaking, but I want to be a conduit for storytellers." She’s already put her money where her mouth is. She became a producer on Fruitvale Station to help with its financing, and continues to support minority directors and young actors. She’s currently producing a biopic series of Madame C.J. Walker, the first self-made African American female millionaire. Where she is not putting her money is homogeneity. “If I look down a list of characters on a film, and it doesn’t have gay, African-American or Latino characters, I’m probably not going to spend my money on the ticket,” she told Deadline. “When we stop supporting things with our dollars that don’t represent all of us, then you’ll see an explosion of diversity. Art is about reaching people that you wouldn’t normally reach. It’s about bringing us together.” Spencer determined long ago that BMWs and five-closet wardrobes weren’t going to determine when she arrived. It would be when she was steering the ship. But maybe the best measure of success is what you do with your ship when it comes in. “After Hidden Figures, I don’t have a problem saying to a room of male executives: ‘I need a female writer or a female director,’ or ‘I need a black voice or a Latin voice. I don’t feel bad about that.” To some, that might sound like sass. To us, it sounds like a boss.
The final film in our ‘high school' sub-season is the Olivia Wilde film from last year BOOKSMART. After some reviews, we talk about the effectiveness of films that might not be ‘for us' as an audience, and the division of high school films into movies about nostalgia, coming of age, or romance — and this discussion leads into a retrospective on the sub-season as a whole, for which this movie serves as an excellent conclusion, in a number of senses. The End of the Tour is a 2015 American drama film about writer David Foster Wallace. The film stars Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg, was written by Donald Margulies, and was directed by James Ponsoldt. Based on David Lipsky's best-selling memoir Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself, it was released on July 31, 2015, by A24 Films. The film is the first film depiction of Wallace, whom Los Angeles Times called "one of the most influential and innovative writers of the last 20 years". SCENE: "Be A Good Guy" (https://youtu.be/47s_3aPKDXw) Writer David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) is dismayed to hear about the suicide of novelist David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel) in 2008. He had interviewed the author over a period of days twelve years earlier, following the publication of Wallace's novel Infinite Jest, which received critical praise and became an international bestseller, a touchstone for numerous readers. He listens to the recordings he made during their time together. The film returns to the period shortly after the book's release. Although initially skeptical of the high praise Wallace's book is receiving, Lipsky – a writer having only marginal success – is awestruck after reading it. He persuades his editor at Rolling Stone magazine to give him an assignment to interview Wallace during his book tour. The journalist travels to meet Wallace at his home on the outskirts of Bloomington-Normal, Illinois (near Illinois State University where the author teaches writing). Lipsky finds the young author unassuming and amiable, but indifferent to being interviewed. Wallace permits Lipsky to tape-record their conversations, with the proviso that Lipsky won't use any direct quotes which Wallace asks to have taken "off the record" five minutes later. Wallace opens up to Lipsky on a variety of subjects, ranging from dogs to television to fame and self-identity, but remains somewhat guarded. He tacitly admits to a

RR162 Film Review Friday: The Circle 2017 PG-13 1hr 50 min IMDb 5.3/10, Drama SciFi Thriller. 15% Rotten Tomatoes Drama Mystery Suspense Starring: : Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, John Boyega Director: James Ponsoldt. Written by James Ponsoldt (screenplay by), Dave Eggers (screenplay and novel) A movie about how a single company will be the catalyst in the loss of privacy of all humans in it’s effort to connect us. The author of the book Dave Eggers denies the book is about Apple, Google, Facebook or any other social media giant. But you can’t help but see the similarities in the obtrusive and sometimes obnoxious nature of the digital world that fills our existence. The creepiness you may feel after you see an ad on Facebook for a bed after your Google search for a bed. I could not help but to be reminded of Steve Jobs when I saw the first scene with Tom Hanks on the stage in his black sweater. “...it never quite finds a groove, or even a mode, and it ends in an abrupt, unsatisfying way.” Robert Ebert Not really a suspenseful flick. It is comprised of broad strokes and has not real meat. Some of the sequences seemed to be there simply to make the movie longer. From what I read this movie is the result of death by cinema which many books are relegated. Apparently, characters who were pivotal and important in the book end up having parts so small that one writers surmised the character would turn out to be a ghost. This movie did not blow my skirt up. In fact, after watching this movie my husband was the one who stated “that’s two hours of my life I am not going to get back.” It also appears not many cared for this film either...Budget of 18M and USA gross 20.4M This how technology is going to take over our lives genre of movie often misses the mark. A few reviewers mention it is or could be a satire but I am unsure if that was the goal. The Net and The Truman show had more substance and were more entertaining in my opinion...that is saying a lot because the Truman Show did not blow my skirt up. Now that I think about it many scenes in this movie reminded me of scenes in other movies or even real life tidbits. Almost as if this movie is a mashup of borrowed scenes from so many other sources. ___________ Research and Links: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4287320/ https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_circle_2017 https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-circle-2017 https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/apr/27/the-circle-review-emma-watson-dave-eggers-tom-hanks https://www.theverge.com/2017/4/28/15464118/the-circle-movie-review-emma-watson-tom-hanks-patton-oswalt https://www.indiewire.com/2017/05/the-circle-emma-watson-tom-hanks-james-ponsoldt-dave-eggers-john-boyega-anatomy-misfire-1201811227/ https://www.bustle.com/p/is-the-circle-based-on-a-real-company-the-cautionary-tale-takes-inspiration-from-all-over-silicon-valley-53315 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Circle_(2017_film) Like, share, comment, subscribe: Home on the web https://riedrants.com/ @RiedRants on Instagram and Twitter Donate at https://www.patreon.com/RiedRants Comment at https://www.facebook.com/RiedRants/ Download at https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/riedrants/id1234080385?mt=2 Or https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/ried-rants?refid=stpr Or even https://soundcloud.com/riedrants https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCz07tkeud_bSx-1dWQC7Urw?view Music: http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music

Bom podcast!

Everything is better in The Circle. I'm sure that's the case, but Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan went and saw what's up with those yahoos and came back with some pretty specific things to say. They review the latest technological thriller from James Ponsoldt, aptly titled The Circle, starring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks. Dylan didn't see anything noteworthy this week, so instead Chris talks about the 2017 Hot Docs Film Festival and the documentaries he saw there, including Step, PACMen, Spookers, and The Departure. He also saw Raw, that French movie about cannibals that everyone's been talking about. There are also a bunch of Blu-Rays this week, but we ended up picking the release of The Age of Shadows as our Blu-ray pick of the week. There's also a handful of news, of course. Next week, we'll be back with the not-so-surprising choice of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Film Fallout is a weekly podcast about film and television. Every week, Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan discuss news happening in the industry, blu-ray releases coming out this week, what they’ve been watching, and then a review of one movie. You can listen to it on SoundCloud, iTunes, or on BagoGames. Also follow us on Instagram for some behind-the-scenes magic. We are both on Twitter, if you’d like to follow us there. Chris is @HammerkopCross, Dylan is @DreaminDylanS, and you can follow the podcast @Filmfalloutcast. And finally, there is a Facebook page for the podcast if you’d like to ‘like’ us on that.

Our Thugs will completely spoil it for you in this show as we explore our respective crushes on Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, John Boyega, and so many others. This week on the InSession Film Podcast, we discuss James Ponsoldt's new film THE CIRCLE, starring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks. For our Top 3 this week, due to the unfortunate news of the passing of Jonathan Demme, we decided to honor the great filmmaker by discussing our favorite Demme films. We had also planned to review the latest film from James Gray, THE LOST CITY OF Z. However due to time, that review will be featured on our Ep. 219 Bonus Content, so be on the look out for that soon. - Review: The Circle (4:47) - Top 3 Jonathan Demme Films (36:55) - Review: The Lost City of Z (See Ep. 219 Bonus Content) Thanks for listening and be sure to subscribe on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud or TuneIn Radio! iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/insession-film-podcast/id605634337 Google Play: https://play.google.com/music/listen?authuser&u=0#/ps/It5foal422yoktioaclalk3ykyi Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/insession-film Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/insession-film TuneIn Radio: http://tunein.com/radio/The-InSession-Film-Podcast-p522717/ Listen Now: http://insessionfilm.com/insession-film-podcasts-listen-now/
Nathan and Scotty leave it up to Andydrogynous to discuss The Circle (starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson) on this week’s “Crap Night ONLY” podcast. Remember, listeners, “Crap” because of the REVIEWER (Andydrogynous) and not necessarily the film itself. Two filmmaking comedians and one inept prepubescent sidekick talking about director James Ponsoldt and the future of technology. Listen, as they provide the commentary. This episode is sponsored by Philz Coffee.
If you think that there is nothing better in life than discussions about Brad Pitt's abs or Tom Hank's typewriters, then we have the show for you. It's time for another installment of Bromancing the Classics so Michael Denniston is back to help us with a discussion about the great David Fincher film, Fight Club. James Ponsoldt talks about adapting Dave Egger's novel "The Circle" into a new movie starring Emma Watson, Tom Hanks & John Boyega. He also discusses "Rodham " – a blacklist script about a young Hillary Clinton – that he believes is even more relevant after the election.
We're not sure whose side we're on but we definitely know there is shooting involved. Welcome to the 60th episode of Film Fallout, where Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan take aim at Free Fire this week. Ben Wheatley is one of our favorite directors, and we take a look at where this stacks in his filmography in terms of comedy and mainstream viability. We also have a nice gentle discussion about High-Rise - his previous film, and one that we both never loved as much we wanted. Before that we discuss James Gray's The Lost City of Z, Nacho Vigalondo's Colossal, and Sophia Takal's Always Shine. Plenty of movies to see in theater, but we also have our Blu-ray releases of the week, including our (obvious) pick for the one to pick up: La La Land. You can listen to our podcast on the popular film. There's also tons of superhero news, because of course there is, and apparently a lot of people do watch Adam Sandler movies. Next week, we'll be back with a review of The Circle starring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks, and directed by James Ponsoldt. Film Fallout is a weekly podcast about film and television. Director Garth Davis discusses his new film, Lion, with James Ponsoldt. Based on the nonfiction book A Long Way Home, Lion tells the incredible story of Saroo Brierly, a five-year-old boy who gets lost on a train hundreds of miles away from his family. After surviving on the streets of Calcutta, he is eventually adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty-five years later, Saroo uses Google Earth to reunite with his family in India. Mr. Davis was nominated for the DGA Awards for Outstanding Directorial Achievement for Feature Film, as well as, Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director for directing this film.
Bec Smith (United Talent Agency) discusses her work as both a literary agent and an independent film agent. We talk about: Growing up in Australia with movie maddness A background in journalism, film criticism and development at Working Title Producing and selling Animal Kingdom at Sundance What it takes for a film to break through the noise, these days How independent films get valued and how projects get made American vs. foreign filmmaking and financing Signing clients ( David Michod, James Ponsoldt, Garth Davis ) from the start Quotes from the show: “I think it’s an exciting and interesting time for feature filmmakers, but I also think it’s more challenging than it’s ever been.” “You’ve got to have a reason for being, either in subject or in terms of the filmmaking.” “I’m a firm believer that cream rises to the top, and I find my way to the things I’m meant to find my way to.” "[A DIY filmmaker] can survive, and plenty of people do, you just have to change your lifestyle. It depends on what you're willing to get by on." "Be tough on yourself. Good isn't good enough. It has to be excellent... If you're gonna do it, just go for broke."
Avy, based in NYC, has cast dozens of films since starting in the industry in the late 1980s. She has worked with many acclaimed directors including: Ang Lee, Steven Spielberg, Lars von Trier, Ira Sachs, and James Ponsoldt. Avy's casting credits over the years include: The Sixth Sense, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Dogville, Smashed, The Skeleton Twins, Europa Report, and Shame. Some of her more recent projects include: A Bigger Splash, Money Monster, and The End of The Tour, as well as The Circle and Little Men.
From Sutter and Aimee in James Ponsoldt’s, The Spectacular Now, to Joe, Patrick, and Biaggio in Jordan Vogt-Roberts’, The Kings of Summer, to Greg and Rachel in Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, the last two years have been a boon to those of us of a certain age with a hankering to rekindle the spirit of the great teen movie of our youth. But this batch is different, not better or worse, but certainly of a different age, for a different age. This week on TNRShorts, Steve Sarmento ties the three together in his new column, Three of a Kind — three films with a common thread, and a trip back to high school.
Jason Segel, if nothing else, is a man of many influences. In this week's episode of Indiewire Influencers, he talks with Indiewire Editor in Chief Dana Harris about "Primal Fear," Roald Dahl books, Jimmy Stewart and Peter Sellers' performance in "Being There" - and that's just the beginning. In many ways, the culmination of those combined cultural experiences shapes his work as David Foster Wallace in James Ponsoldt's "The End of the Tour." In playing the late, beloved writer, Segel found a challenge that had been lingering on his periphery for a while.

The popular star of film and TV comedies sits down with THR's awards analyst to discuss his life, career and the dramatic performance — as David Foster Wallace in James Ponsoldt's indie — for which he is receiving supporting actor Oscar buzz.
Hunter and Chris get literally literary with a review of the David Foster Wallace biopic The End of The Tour. Chris gets into an accidental state of pure inebriation with his booze recommendation. Then in Special Features, the Dudes discuss comedic actors playing dramatic parts in Funny Folks Without the Jokes.
“[David Foster Wallace] was the one voice I absolutely trusted to make sense of the outside world for me. Anyone that picks up his work for the next 50 years will have their antenna polished and sharpened, and they’ll be receiving many more channels than they were aware of.” – David Lipsky In this skillful “two-hander” Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg star as celebrated author David Foster Wallace and David Lipsky, the Rolling Stone journalist who was sent to interview Wallace at the conclusion of his 1996 book tour promoting Infinite Jest. Though the intended Rolling Stone profile was never published, Lipsky went on to write a best-selling memoir about their meeting (Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself) after Wallace’s tragic suicide in 2008. Lipsky’s book was the basis for The End of the Tour. Before we are accused of trying to emulate the length of Wallace-sized paragraphs, let us just say: Jason Segel really is a revelation. Directed by James Ponsoldt; written by Pulitzer-Prize-Winning-Playwright Donald Margulies; co-starring Ron Livingston, Anna Chlumsky, Mamie Gummer, Mickey Sumner, and Joan Cusack. O’Toole even likes the film’s poster – which reminds her of John Lennon’s self-portrait. Hollister predicts the comeback for Wallace’s trademark bandana – and, for those looking to delve further into Wallace’s work, recommends starting with Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. The podcast concludes in the words of David Foster Wallace himself – excerpts from his Commencement Address (“This is Water”) given to the 2005 graduates of Kenyon College.

Since his death in 2008 at age 46, a kind of cult has developed around writer David Foster Wallace. For proof, look no further than the existence of THE END OF THE TOUR, the Sundance hit starring Jason Segel as Wallace, along with Jesse Eisenberg as Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky. Devin and Mark discuss James Ponsoldt's drama The End of the Tour, starring Jason Segel as the author David Foster Wallace and Jesse Eisenberg as Rolling Stone journalist David Lipsky. They both enjoyed the movie, even though they were uncomfortable with the idea of a mainstream movie about a man who likely would have abhorred the concept of a mainstream movie about himself.
A conversation with screenwriter Donald Margulies of the new film The End of the Tour starring Jason Segal and Jesse Eisenberg and directed by James Ponsoldt.
Jason Segel says he was terrified to take on the role of writer David Foster Wallace in The End of the Tour, but director James Ponsoldt never doubted him. They tell us about their new film, which follows a journalist on the road with the famed author.
Benjamin Percy and Etgar Keret read from and discuss their work. They are introduced by Jonathan Wilson, Director of the Center for the Humanities at Tufts University. The event took place on November 11, 2014 Benjamin Percy is the author of a novel, The Wilding (Graywolf Press, 2010), winner of the Society of Midland Authors Award for Fiction; and two books of stories, Refresh, Refresh (Graywolf, 2007) and The Language of Elk (Carnegie Mellon, 2006). His second novel, a psychological thriller entitled Red Moon, was published in 2013 (Hachette). His fiction and nonfiction have been read on National Public Radio, performed at Symphony Space, and published by Esquire, where he is a regular contributor, Men's Journal, Outside, the Paris Review, Tin House, Chicago Tribune, Orion, GQ, Men's Health, The Wall Street Journal, Ploughshares, Glimmer Train, and many other magazines and journals. His honors include a National Endowment for the Arts, a Whiting Award, the Plimpton Prize, a Pushcart Prize, and inclusion in Best American Short Stories. His story "Refresh, Refresh" was adapted into a screenplay by filmmaker James Ponsoldt and a graphic novel (First Second Books, 2009) by Eisner-nominated artist Danica Novgorodoff. He teaches in the MFA program in creative writing and environment at Iowa State University. Hailed as the voice of young Israel and one of its most radical and extraordinary writers, Etgar Keret is internationally acclaimed for his short stories. Born in Tel Aviv in 1967 to an extremely diverse family, his brother heads an Israeli group that lobbies for the legalization of marijuana, and his sister is an orthodox Jew and the mother of ten children. Keret regards his family as a microcosm of Israel. His book, The Nimrod Flip-Out, (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2006), is a collection of 32 short stories that captures the craziness of life in Israel today. Rarely extending beyond three or four pages, these stories fuse the banal with the surreal. Shot through with a dark, tragicomic sensibility and casual, comic-strip violence, he offers a window on a surreal world that is at once funny and sad. His most recent book, Suddenly a Knock on the Door (2010), became an instant #1 bestseller in Israel and came out in the US in 2012.
