For John David Washington, bringing Netflix's The Piano Lesson (November 22) from stage to screen was a family affair. His father, Denzel, produces while his brother, Malcolm, directs the film adaptation of August Wilson's play about the Charles family in 1936 Pittsburgh as they wrestle with selling a family heirloom, a piano descended from ancestors who were slaves. “I don't think you have to be a Black American to relate to this story.” But it wasn't just working with his family that meant something to him. “I'm thinking about Sam [Samuel L.] Jackson, who originated the role in 1987. Michael Potts. LaTanya [Richardson] Jackson. I'm thinking about Stephen [McKinley] Henderson. I'm a part of that now. That gives me so much power and encouragement.” And while “the whale of truth that we're floating along here is the underbelly of the antebellum South, the Jim Crow era,” Washington says the universal messages runs deeper. “If you understand that, we also talk about something else. It's what's so brilliant about August Wilson's work.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Happy 4th of July America! For such a time as this, writer/director Alex Garland dropped his latest flick Civil War into theaters. This $50 million A24 film actually made some money bringing in $120 million worldwide. In the film, the United States is engulfed in a Civil War, as President Nick Offerman has taken authoritarian control over the federal government. Meanwhile, various secessionist regional factions are heading for Washington, D.C. to wreak havoc. Journalists played by Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson are road tripping while capturing the wartime action. What is the purpose of this film at this time, Mr. Garland? We considered it our patriotic duty to try to figure it out. God Bless the USA!

Send us a Text Message. This week on Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to wrestle with divisions among our ranks as we tackle 2024's controversial Civil War, directed by Alex Garland and starring Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Maura, Calliee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Nick Offerman and Jesse Plemons.I'm joined this week by a blockbuster crew consisting of Utah IT Tech and film lover Burton Brown, as well part-time New York, part-time Florida denizen, author, producer, and gadfly George Young. Before we embark on our little journey towards the truth, the synopsis: In Civil War four journalists, hard-bitten and cynical war photographer Lee Smith, brash, cowboy reporter Joel, wide-eyed rookie photobug Jessie Cullins who idolizes Lee and sage old New York Times correspondent Sammy (curious note: the women in the film have last names but the men don't) travel a roundabout 1000 miles from New York to Washington D.C. through an America ripped apart by a 2nd Civil War in order to get a final interview from the U.S. president before the country is taken over by Western Forces, which is an extremely unlikely alliance between Texas and California. Spoiler Alert: This episode contains numerous plot spoilers for Civil War.On today's show, we inaugurate a new episode series called reel:verb, in which we rate, review, and analyze a recent movie from the perspective of politics, culture, and language in action. In the first installment, Alex, Olivia, and Calvin tackle the 2024 dystopian thriller Civil War, directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation). Civil War depicts a near-future US torn apart by domestic warfare, as seen from the perspectives of a small group of journalists (played by Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson, respectively) who are documenting the fighting and plotting to photograph and interview the besieged US president (Nick Offerman). We begin by providing our individual ratings of the film (out of 5 verbs), and then we recap the major plot points and set pieces that take place along Dunst et. al's roadtrip from hell. We conclude with a wide-ranging analysis of the film's politics and rhetoric, in which we unpack how it depicts journalism (and journalists) and consider its social significance in the midst of ongoing US-backed conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere around the world. Ultimately, we argue, this film's vision of civil war is too far-fetched, abstracted, and underdeveloped to serve as a true cautionary tale for US audiences – perhaps because Garland, like his cast of photojournalists, is apparently more invested in aestheticizing violence than cogently critiquing it. Well, movies and television have now, finally caught up with us. Civil War is the fourth film written and directed by Alex Garland. Up until this movie, everyone has had to picture only in their mind what the next civil war in America would look like. Now the new movie from director Alex Garland, “Civil War”, provides the visual representation of what such a war would look like. As you'd expect, it's horrifying and brutal and the protagonists in this movie are there to take pictures of much of it. Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny play war photographers along with Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley Henderson working alongside them. They all embark on a road trip from New York City to Washington D.C. to try to get an interview with the President of the United States before the forces fighting him take him out. Along the way, they see the horrors of this civil war and come close to death themselves. This isn't war fighting in some other country. This is a bloody war in these modern times in America. Is it worth your time and strength to experience this movie? HAPPY 300TH EPISODE - Thanks to all listeners and subscribers for your continued support!!! :) The acclaimed writer/director of Ex Machina and Annihilation has returned to deliver his largest production yet, a dystopian war drama taking place in a possible future where the USA (no longer) is now experiencing its SECOND Civil War as several states have seceded from the Union resulting in an ongoing brutal conflict among several different factions. This story follows four journalists (Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson) as they cover the action in a variety of places around the Northeast on their way to a seminal event expected to occur in Washington, DC. And what results is definitely the most controversial film of 2024 so far.....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Is this film a warning to the United States? Olivia and Emily discuss how Civil War surprisingly wasn't political and focused more on the murky ethics of photojournalism. They also discuss the impact of the visuals and sound design, the cycle of young replacing the old, and of course, the iconic Jesse Plemons. Civil War was directed by Alex Garland, starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, and Stephen McKinley Henderson, and was released in theaters on April 12, 2024.

It's a house divided in this episode as our hosts have very differing takes on just how successfully this new film from writer/director Alex Garland (ANNILHILATION, EX MACHINA) infuses its narrative with grounded politics... and whether it needs to at all? Nick Offerman gets an upgrade from municpal parks and rec employee to POTUS. Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson are journalists caught in various crossfires. And Jesse Plemons gets to recreate the moment he and Kirsten Dunst first fell in love in real life. With the country in the grips of Civil War fever, I join forces with Screen Slate editor-in-chief Jon Dieringer, who was fresh from seeing the much-anticipated movie at a local Regal Cinema. (The plot follows a band of photojournalists—played by Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson—who are driving to Washington, D.C., to try to interview the president.) Civil War Ending Explained #civilwar #a24 #endingexplained Civil War is a 2024 dystopian film written and directed by Alex Garland. The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman. Its plot follows a team of journalists who travel across the United States during a rapidly escalating Second American Civil War, which has engulfed the entire nation.
‘Civil War' sees director Alex Garland's imagined universe of what a second civil war would look like in the United States. Audiences are guided through the film by its main protagonists, a quartet of journalists played by Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. Shows the lengths to which these journalists are willing to go, to not only document history but also try and live past it. Today on FilmWeek, we welcome ‘Civil War' stars Wagner Moura and Cailee Spaeny, to discuss their time working with Garland and developing their characters.
Kelsi and Trey react and deep dive Alex Garland's Civil War. While a technical feat, Civil War is politically unchallenging and lacks a nuanced confrontation as an anti-war movie. Thankfully, Kirsten Dunst as a hollowed photojournalist on this road trip to D.C. with her dynamic co-stars Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson keep you invested in an otherwise disappointing showing from one of our great science fiction filmmakers. Book Vs. Movie: FencesThe 1987 play Vs. the 2016 movieFor Black History Month, the Margos revisit playwright August Wilson (we covered Ma Rainey's Black Bottom last year.)
