Zaroff gives Rainsford a choice: be hunted or join in the hunt. Rainsford refuses and becomes Zaroff's next target.

This beloved monster movie from the filmmaking team of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack employed then revolutionary stop-motion animation to bring not just the film's titular character to life, but a whole host of dinosaurs and other inhabitants of Skull Island. Featuring the original scream-queen, Fay Wray, as novice actress Ann Darrow, Robert Armstrong as desperate filmmaker Carl Denham and Bruce Cabot as daring sailor, Jack Driscoll, King Kong is arguably the most influential creature feature ever made and is discussed here along with the King Kong's legacy which has spawned a long-running series of films that's still going strong today.

For our Paramount 1943 episode, just a couple of typical comedies, as far as John Douglas Eames is concerned: Preston Sturges' The Palm Beach Story, starring Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea, a comedy of remarriage in which the screwballs are no longer the central couple, and Mitchell Leisen's cross-class comedy with a number of twists, No Time For Love, with Colbert and Fred MacMurray. We try to figure out what these movies, coming at the end of the screwball comedy cycle, have to say about love, sex, class, wealth, and gender in America in the early 1940s. And in our Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto segment we discuss Merian C. Cooper's relentlessly vicious King Kong (1933) as a kind of unconsciously Verhoevian nightmare “family film”. Warner Bros executive George Feltenstein takes us through the September 2022 Blu-ray releases from the Warner Archive.  We kick off the discussion with the release of two TV series on Blu-ray.  First is the popular comedy “Young Sheldon” season 5,  which includes a 100th episode retrospective featurette titled, "Time Flies When You're Having Fun: Young Sheldon at 100."  The 2nd series is the bittersweet sixth and final season Blu-ray of the fan-favorite show "Lucifer," which includes deleted scenes and the ever-popular gag reel as extras.Next, we discuss the re-release of the now out-of-print Blu-ray for the classic 1933 version of "King Kong," starring Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, Bruce Cabot, directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, and scored by composer Max Steiner.  While re-releases are not common for the Warner Archive, the lack of availability for a film as important as “King Kong” made it a necessity to provide a new, affordable Blu-ray to the public.  And finally, we discuss the two films new to Blu-ray this month.  First up is "Abe Lincoln In Illinois," (1940) starring Raymond Massey, Gene Lockhart, Ruth Gordon, and directed by John Cromwell.  George provides background on the restoration and history of this presidential classic.  And we end our discussion with the award-winning release "Rachel, Rachel," (1968) starring Joanne Woodward and directed by her husband and first-time director, Paul Newman.Purchase on Amazon:King Kong (1933) Blu-rayAbe Lincoln In Illinios Blu-rayRachel, Rachel Blu-rayLucifer S6 Blu-rayYoung Sheldon S5 Blu-rayOtaku Media produces podcasts, behind-the-scenes extras, and media that connect creatives with their fans and businesses with their consumers.  Contact us today to see how we can work together to achieve your goals.  www.otakumedia.tv

THE BIG GAME month kicks off with Ernest B. Schoedsack and Irving Pichel's fantastic THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME. THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME was a runaway hit story by Richard Connell, and interest in the story has carried on for nearly a century later. But back in the 1930s, two directors used the leftover KING KONG sets (Schoedsack co-directed Kong) to make a daring adaptation with splashes of intense violence and social commentary.

Our tour through proto-Kaiju films continues with a loving and beloved spiritual successor to King Kong with 1949’s hidden gem “Mighty Joe Young”. Original cast and crew from 1933’s Godzilla return to make a very different feel good film. The amazing stop motion work of Ray Harryhausen is put on full display here animating the animalistic movements of Joe. This film, while not connected to King Kong is a first step in many Kaiju films that will follow it. The monster at its core is relatable, heroic and given qualities that make it the center of attention. While not to titanic proportions of King Kong or other monsters that follow it, Mighty Joe Young still is a worthy watch for following the overall arc of Kaiju Eiga. Starring Terry Moore, Ben Johnson and returning from the Kong films, actor Robert Armstrong. The story was created by King Kong’s director and producer Merian C. Cooper, and directed by Ernest B. Schoedsack. Writer Ruth Rose also returns to pen the screenplay. All these Kong connections are why this film feels to be a natural extension and part of the greater Kong universe. some will tell you Irving Pichel and Ernest B. Schoedsack's 1932 adaptation of "The Most Dangerous Game" is the granddaddy of all HUNTING HUMANS motion pictures. Others prefer John Woo's "Hard Target", while some deranged individuals see the merits in the John Leguizamo comedy vehicle, "The Pest". With full respect to all other efforts to depict jaded, venal motherfuckers snuffing out human lives for sport, I would nominate Ernest Dickerson's 1994 saga, "Surviving The Game" as the genre's classic. While not nearly as original as Dickerson's 1992 "Juice" (which for the purposes of this discussion, was not a hunting humans movie at all), STG does feature Ice-T evading the firepower of Rutger Hauer, F. Murray Abraham, Gary Busey and other grotesque caricatures of wealth/predation before exacting revenge. If only this episode could've feature some dialogue from the film, however, rights clearance issues once again, meant you've had to settle for selections from the CSTB archives.
