When THE OMEN (1976) was released, it received very good reviews even if some critics tried to say it was made to profit on the success of the 1973 film, THE EXORCIST. But it itself has become a classic movie and won numerous awards at various award shows. It became a franchise of films, and even had a remake. Now a prequal has appeared entitled THE FIRST OMEN (2024).In the early 1970's, American Margaret (Nell Tiger Free) arrives in Rome to become a nun. She meets fellow initiates as she tries to adjust to the rigors of the nunnery she happens to be placed. After some shocking deaths, and an appearance of a strange priest, she begins to doubt if her new home is as safe as she first thought. The movie is directed by Arkasha Stevenson and written by TIm Smith, Arkasha Stevenson, and Keith Thomas. The feature stars Nell Tiger Free along with Ralph Ineson, Sonia Braga, and Bill Nighly. Receiving fairly decent reviews, does the movie live up to the original? Your co-hosts take a look and give their thoughts.

How hilariously inept is Raul Julia's car thief mastermind? How incredible is the opening car carrier chase sequence? How great is this cast full of real-deal character actors? And what are the odds this movie was a re-worked “one last case” Dirty Harry film?  The Rookie stars Clint Eastwood, Charlie Sheen, Raul Julia, Sonia Braga, Lara Flynn Boyle, Pepe Serna, Marco Rodríguez, Xander Berkeley, Tony Plana, Paul Ben-Victor, and Tom Skerritt as Eugene Ackerman; directed by Clint Eastwood.   Richard Donner's The Omen (1976) follows American diplomat Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck) as he investigates his adopted son's, Damien, background once tragedy befalls those close to him. Thorn's quest for answers ultimately leads him to Italy and the unsettling revelation that his son may be the Antichrist. Sadly the subsequent installments never quite duplicated the impact of the first chapter in this genre-disrupting religious horror saga. The idea of a compelling legacy-prequel feels like a non-starter. Well, director and co-writer Arkasha Stevenson would like a word. Because, The First Omen is an absolute master class on how to create a stunning in-canon prequel to a classic. Fresh Eyes Brings Fresh Perspective on the Horrific Stevenson's feature debut follows Margaret (Nell Tiger Free), a young American novitiate, as she arrives in Rome, Italy (1971) to complete her probationary period at a Roman orphanage before taking vows. For those new to the Omen universe, this prequel is a fresh-eyed, gnarly lure into the dark and twisted world of religious horror and one of the foundational storylines in the genre. Margaret encounters Carlita  (Nicole Sorace), a troubled orphan, living in practical isolation. Reminded of her own turbulent childhood, she befriends the young girl in the hopes of acting as her champion. As increasingly disturbing happenings swirl around Carlita, Margaret stumbles into a dark and gruesome unfolding conspiracy. Just as Margaret connects with Carlita, a rogue priest (Ralph Ineson) approaches, demanding her help. He's on the hunt for proof of a plot by a corrupt sect within the Church. Unlike in The Omen, the women carry the bulk of the plot development. This shift in point of view adds layers to the terror of being in a new city, trying to integrate into an established social dynamic and feeling unsettled by a sense of danger dogging your every step. Stevenson relies less on the obvious jumpscare and more on discomfort, paranoia, and the pay off is next level.  The First Omen breathes menacing new life into religious horror  Under Stevenson's direction The First Omen comfortably resides at the intersection of fanatical secret societies and unholy dark arts. From the period-accurate production design and costuming, to the religious iconography and symbolism deftly sets the stage for a harrowing spiral into the heart of darkness with precision. Cinematographer Aaron Morton employs an earthy color palette and savvy use of light, shadow, and scene staging ably assisting Stevenon's unabashed commitment to blending its paranoid-thriller and supernatural horror roots into a trauma-inducing story.  Through a combination of awkward physicality, unworldliness, and bouts of inexplicable agitation Tiger Free creates a convincing picture of a woman pushed to the brink. Tiger Free's a captivating mix of ingénue and fervent acolyte. There's a constant sense of danger built though the score alongside the character development that constantly acts as anchor and visually entralling foil.  Listen as Ro and special guest Richard Newby discuss (spoiler-free) the thematically rich and incisive allegories baked into The First Omen.  The First Omen opens in theaters, April 5, 2024 Director: Arkasha Stevenson Writers: Tim Smith, Arkasha Stevenson, Keith Thomas Starring: Nell Tiger Free, Tawfeek Barhom, Sonia Braga, Ralph Ineson, Bill Nighy Runtime:  2 Hours Synopsis: A young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, where she encounters a darkness that outs her own faith in jepardy,  Like what you hear? Fasten your seatbelt, folks, it's time for THE ROOKIE, Clint Eastwood's 1990 attempt to do Dirty Harry in big, loud LETHAL WEAPON mode with strange CLOUD ATLAS-style colorblind casting. Did it work? You gotta listen to find out, pal. I can't answer every little question you have! I have a podcast description to write, for h**ven's sake. As I was trying to say, we get into toxic police self-mythologizing, huge stunts, the long history of Germans in Latin and South America, plus Jake's got a big-brain reading of the film that he's very proud of. Check it out! Topics include: Ian's recent trip abroad (and why we didn't have an episode out last week), San Jose talk, Sesame Street, another visit to the Frank Capracorner, Raul Julia appreciation, the Sonia Braga scene, Charlie Sheen and family, and how much we love chasing G-rides. You recognized them right away because we were used to a kind of television that was done properly, with the lights put in the right place, a television that wanted to educate its listeners, its viewers, and then suddenly these horrible, unwatchable things appeared on tv, with crazy lighting, cloying acting, so much so that I remember, I used to make fun of my mom who watched them and I said, well, don't you realize that it's all one thing, a badly produced, badly acted mess? But anyway, soap operas had that crazy attraction power and so people started watching them. And at one point I started watching too. Because? What happened? Sonia Braga, the queen of Dancing Days, arrived in the soap operas.Dancing Days was a soap opera like no other. It was scheduled after lunch and I remember when I had the morning shift at school - I finished, I don't remember at twenty past one - I used to make a mad dash to get home because Dancing Days was starting I wanted to see it.It was different, and the driving force behind the Dancing Days story was Sonia Braga. An actor whose name I quickly learned, waiting for the final credits and reading them, there was no internet at the time, so I had no idea who she was, but she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. And the character played was this independent woman who got angry, did things, and then she was beautiful, she had this crazy sensuality, this very long black hair that I, as a person born with natural curls, envied so much. The events took place in this Brazil which for me was a wonderful place. Maybe one of the reasons why Dancing Days and Sonia Braga had such a strong effect on me, is also because Sonia Braga is a fantastic actor, I'm just saying if you've never seen it, watch Kiss of the Spider Woman, which is an amazing movie. Why am I telling you about Sonia Braga? Because last night I watched one of those films to pass the night without thinking, with Jennifer Lopez, go figure, because I read some good reviews. It was no big deal, of course. Looking at the end credits there was a ballet I read the names of the actors, and Sonia Braga was there! She played Jennifer Lopez's mother, she was a lady with white hair and I didn't recognize her. I had a heart attack. Sure, I know people get older, but to see her so suddenly, oh my, she's still beautiful, always wonderful. And I continue to adore her, Sonia Braga.

S3 E8 ESCAPE FROM CHARLIE SHEEN'S POOL HOUSE  1979's ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ, directed by podcast fave Don Donald Siegel (Coogan's Bluff, The Beguiled, Dirty Harry, Two Mules For Sister Sara),  remains one of Clint's most memorable films. Turning down the laffs and winks that dominated a good portion of his 70's output, Eastwood is as taut here as Siegel's film detailing the heist-like planning and execution of... well, it's in the title. Ken saw it in theaters in 1979 and for years remembered it as being in black and white. Guess what, young Ken? It isn't! How does it hold up compared with the 639 other Eastwood films we have covered? Find out! Then 1990's THE ROOKIE, co-starring Charlie Sheen as a man who killed his brother (no, Emilio!!!) as a child or... something?  They jump off a roof we think? Then, even though he is rich, he becomes THE ROOKIE to Clint's grizzled old pro of a donut-chomping, cigar-smoking cop. Also featuring Raul Julia and Sonia Braga as, um, German car thieves?!?! We think? Yeah, we have no idea either. What the heck is going on here?  We will talk about the infamous scene between Clint and Braga, so don't worry or... worry. A lot. It's one of a kind, we will give it that. Eastwood made this for Warner Bros to pay back them after financing the little-seen White Hunter, Black Heart earlier in 1990 and The Rookie subsequently bombed as well. Go figure. When Lara Flynn Boyle is a beacon of good sense and tranquility in your movie, you are in trouble. Jack Green's reliably crisp and dark cinematography slaps so it is not all confounding.Unforgiven was two years away so this story ends well but Clint was stumbling bigly at this point, both artistically and at the box office. Huge turning point in his career looking back. But does that make it worth watching? Listen and find out!ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ: 00:03:30THE ROOKIE 00:43:05

The new film Bacurau centers upon the residents of a remote Brazilian village who gradually discover that they're being hunted by a group of Western tourists. Part class-warfare satire, part thriller, the movie gripped audiences at the New York Film Festival and it marks a major achievement by its directors Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles. In this episode, FC Editor-in-Chief Nicolas Rapold joins FC Assistant Editor Devika Girish in a conversation with Mendonça Filho and Dornelles where they discuss five key scenes from the film. These include the opening scene, which takes us via drone shot and truck drive into the film's remote setting; a psychotropic interlude in which the residents of Bacurau dance the capoeira in preparation for battle; and finally a climactic action sequence that occurs in a local museum. They also discuss a memorable exchange between Udo Kier, who appears here as the icy-cruel leader of the Western mercenaries, and Brazilian acting legend Sonia Braga, who plays the village matriarch. Listen ahead for details on the making of each scene.

Aquarius is a three-part feature film depicting the life and struggles of its central character Clara, an ageing music critic played by Brazilian actress and former Golden Globe nominee Sonia Braga. The film opens in 1980, where Clara lives with her family in Aquarius, an elegant nineteen forties apartment on the beachfront of Recife, a seaside town on Brazil’s east coast. During a family celebration, it is revealed Clara is a breast cancer survivor. Flash forward thirty-six years, Clara is a 65-year-old widow, addressed as Dona Clara, who faces disaster when developers threaten to tear down the old building and replace the Aquarius with a modern luxury condo. As the last remaining tenant, Clara is faced with increasingly sizeable offers from the company headed by Diego, a young ambitious business graduate. Attached to the apartment’s sentiment and memories, Clara refuses to leave despite obvious pressure from her three children, who are keen to bolster their wealthy late father’s inheritance. So begins an epic battle against the developers to retain her apartment block, where Clara faces a series of harassment, intimidation and abuse from Diego’s company in a bid to force her out. Director Kleber Mendonca Filho spends much time delving into detail, often with intimate close-ups portraying Clara’s everyday life and the close relationships she develops with her family and long-time housekeeper. Clara’s deep passion for music and eclectic taste ranging from samba to Queen is often depicted through her dancing alone in the apartment to various vinyl records. The film’s opening sequence reveals Clara models her life on Aunty Lucia, the adored 70-year-old aunt with a girlish appearance and long hair. As the film progresses, the women’s passion for life and their legacy appears to be passed on to Julia, the young girlfriend of Clara’s nephew. Aquarius also highlights the deeply entrenched societal divisions in Brazil through its portrayal of racial tension, class conflict and family. In a scene where Clara and her housekeeper confront Diego, the young businessman bluntly states it would have been hard for Clara and her family to achieve success due to her dark skin. Audiences are shown multiple facets to Clara’s character, where her formidable manner and appearance is matched by an equally vulnerable side and pain from her past. The nightmare scene where a maid-thief recurs in Clara’s dreams is a revenge of sorts, as Clara is shown to have a lifelong habit of deriding servants and speaking as if they were invisible. It can be argued Aquarius is a metaphor for Brazil and the country’s contemporary political tensions. The film’s debut in the Cannes competition last year was accompanied by cast members protesting Brazil is no longer a democracy. Aquarius ends in a rather abrupt and unexpected manner, but nonetheless paints a superb portrait of a woman who defies the boundaries of age and time. Episode 34 of One Week Only! This week's key film is the documentary "Tower," about the 1966 shootings at the University of Texas tower. The film combines archival footage and rotoscoped animation to recreate the terrifying events of the day, considered the first mass shooting in US history. A unique and powerful documentary, sadly very relevant today, and now playing in select theatres, from Kino Lorber. Our interview this week is with Platon Theodoris, director of the surreal character drama "Alvin's Harmonious World of Opposites" about a sheltered man forced to deal with his peculiar neighbors, and the brown ooze coming from his ceiling. David Lynch may come to mind, but Theodoris talks about the personal source of the story, and how he created the unique characters. The film is screening next week at the Arclight theatre in Chicago as part of the Slamdance Cinema club. We also review multi-story drama "Certain Women," starring Kristen Stewart & Michelle Williams, directed by Kelly Reichardt; documentary "Sky Ladder" about Chinese fireworks artist Cia Guo-Qiang, directed by Kevin Macdonald; documentary "Newtown" about the Sandy Hook school shooting (also sadly relevant), directed by Kim Snyder; animated biopic "Miss Hokusai" about a famous Japanese painter & his daughter, directed by Keiichi Hara; and Brazilian drama "Aquarius" starring Sonia Braga as an independent woman fighting against city development, directed by Kleber Mendonca Filho. In this 39th Oscar podcast, Gold Rush Gang member Júlia Albuquerque and I break down the winners and losers at this year's Cannes Film Festival awards ceremony where sometimes it was hard to tell the two apart.  We talk extensively about the role of "armchair" criticism of the festival and the jury's awards choices and how Cannes l'enfant terrible Xavier Dolan was able to walk away with his biggest prize yet for his worst reviewed film. Júlia also reminds us how before the festival started, jury member Arnaud Desplechin remarked that he wants to find this year's Mad Max and Son of Saul yet ended up picking Ken Loach's I, Daniel Blake for the top prize. To that effect, we talk about the post-ceremony jury press conference where they defend their choices, with Donald Sutherland and jury president George Miller doing most of the heavy lifting. Obviously we look at what films are the most likely to make it through the year to Oscar season success (hint: there's really only one). Of course, actress talk dominates much of the podcast with Sonia Braga and Isabelle Huppert holding court there as the two biggest predicted Actress potentials that both lost to Jaclyn Jose.  We end with what, if any, of the foreign language films might end up being Oscar submissions for individual countries.
