Shirley Venard is an incredible Minneapolis-based actress who uses her life experiences to embody a character. She's kind, thoughtful, and a teacher. She loves to tell stories which is why we love her. Shirley brought Oscar-winning short movie The Railroad Lady (La Femme et la TGV). The first tale of a lonely woman in this pairing. Shirley looked at the great actresses of the 1900's to find her short and her and Justin talk of Jane's fake orgasm that made her famous. The feature Shirley chose is the Zellner Brother's Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter. The Japanese, Texas made movie that was largely shot in Minnesota. It was a Sundance Film Festival favorite, making Minnesota & Japan look beautiful on the silver screen. See Shirley Venard's work in our short movie Prologue. In the forecast to look forward to please check out Marcellus Hall an Artist in New York City which is playing around the world.

This week we talk about the based on a true story, kinda, but not film Kumiko the Treasure Hunter. Rinko Kikuchi anchors this film based on a Japanese office worker who flies to America in search of a lost treasure she's convinced she knows the location of. Simultaneously tragic and uplifting, with a dark humor this is a movie that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Host Wyndham Jennings talks about the movie, the homages it makes to Fargo(1996) and the sad story that inspired it, along with the unfortunate misunderstanding that spun it into an urban legend. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/celluloidfeverdreams/support

Hello and welcome to How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today we go back to episode 395 for a great conversation with Austin's art-rockers, The Octopus Project originally released on July 14, 2015! Below are my original notes form the show. My guests for episode 395 is one of Austin's most innovative, creative and musically brilliant exports, The Octopus Project! Their score for the film, Kumiko: The Treasure Hunter comes out this week on vinyl. The movie is amazing and the score is absolutely gorgeous. If you're not a vinyl person, you can find it and all of their other releases on iTunes, Spotify and by going to their website, theoctopusproject.com. You can also find their wealth of videos and other content including handmade, stuffed animals. I had a blast sitting down and getting to know this hyper-creative trio and talking to them about everything, keeping a band together for 16 and staying fresh and relevant, creating visual art including videos, one-of-a-kind merchandise, being a couple in a band, the theremin, finding chords that make you cry, how Juan the engineer won a scavenger hunt that included the band, scoring films and much, much more. Toto, Yvonne and Josh are three of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. They also make amazing music and art. I hope you enjoy getting to know The Octopus Project. I sure did. Let's get down! It's a BEHIND THE LENS that's out of this world thanks to former astronaut and "Global Space Statesman" BUZZ ALDRIN, writer/director MICHAEL GRODNER, and writers/directors/actors DAVID ZELLNER and NATHAN ZELLNER as we look to the stars, the world of punk rock, and a wild western! First up we take a peek into the stars and space exploration with our pre-recorded interview with BUZZ ALDRIN. A sit-down exclusive that preceded film critic debbie elias moderating an intimate Q&A with Buzz on June 21 for the premiere of THE MAN WHO UNLOCKED THE UNIVERSE (a fascinating documentary on Ulugh Beg whose interest and work in astronomy pre-dated that of Galileo by 150 years and set the stage for much of what has come since in our journey to the stars), take a listen as Buzz talks about his latest endeavor, The Human SpaceFlight Institute, and his thoughts on our trajectory to Mars. Then writer/director MICHAEL GRODNER joins BTLRadioShow to talk about his feature directorial debut, THE ICARUS LINE MUST DIE. A renowned director of music videos and creator of DirectyLaundry.TV, Michael continues his longtime love of music and exploration of the visual medium with this narrative feature co-written and starring JOE CARDAMONE, longtime frontman of punk band The Icarus Line. From a true black and white visual palette to non-actors to the affability of Cardamone and the ease and relatability of the story, Michael goes in-depth into the making of ICARUS with a refreshing candor and energy. And then sit back and take a listen to our exclusive interview with filmmakers DAVID ZELLNER and NATHAN ZELLNER as hilarity ensues talking the wild, wacky, and wonderful revisionist western DAMSEL. Co-directors, co-writers and two of the film's stars, the brothers extraordinaire cover everything from their love of classic westerns (and Budd Boetticher) to location shooting to story to miniature horses, chickens, colors, rowboats and coastlines (in a western, yes!), to directing and acting at the same time, and more. The follow-up to their award-winning indie darling "Kumiko The Treasure Hunter", David and Nathan are an effervescent delight! http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

FX is deep into its third season of Fargo, a show that at least two of us love. To celebrate Noah Hawley's lyrical adaptation of the Coen Bros. film classic, the Forgotten Film Pod is introducing each other to KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER, which takes place in a kind of pocket of the Fargo cinematic universe, and INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, the Coens' other wintry, lyrical masterpiece. Still confused how these two got paired together? Rabbits don't get their due, cinematically. There's that new Blu-Ray of "Watership Down" that Criterion recently released. But not that many films feature rabbits as the hero or even a sidekick. So imagine how excited we were to learn that "Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter" prominently featured a rabbit as the title character's companion. Alas, Bunzo, as his owner Kumiko called him, was not meant to be the hero or even sidekick of this story. His contribution to the story is dwarfed by Kumiko, the central character, who lives a lonely life in Tokyo. She discovers a VHS tape of the movie "Fargo" and decides she's going to travel to Minnesota and dig up the suitcase full of money that Steve Buscemi's character hides in the snow. You and I both know that is impossible, but try telling that to Kumiko. Minnesota is pretty snowy, you get my drift? Listen for Andrew and Phil's reaction to this strange film. Spring has sprung but we're not quite out of the woods when it comes to bland-to-terrible Hollywood offerings (The Divergent Series: Insurgent, we're looking at you). Fortunately, we live in an age where independent films are more freely available than ever before which means there's a respite to the slop playing at the multiplex. This week we're discussing two of the best films of the year so far that just so happen to have been released by small, indie studios with no star power to speak of - Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter and Spring. After that we get out our anesthesia inhalers, take a deep breath, and discuss David Lynch's sexy, twisted murder-mystery, Blue Velvet as part two of our David Lynch Directors Series. Once the blood has been mopped up we hand out our Weekly Movie Recommendations and call it a day. 02:42 – Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter 09:14 - Spring 18:43 - Blue Velvet 1:00:22 - Weekly Movie Recommendations
Tyler and David talk about movies they've watched recently, including Still Alice and Zodiac.
