Sunday 24th November 2024 - West and North Sites Sunday 1st December 2024 - Central site AM & PM Speaker - Gemma Jones Gemma introduces our Christmas series - "Come and See!" with a look at Mary's Song in Luke chapter 1. -------- Luke 1 v 26 - 56 26) In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27) to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28) The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.” 29) Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30) But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favour with God. 31) You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32) He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33) and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” 34) “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35) The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36) Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37) For no word from God will ever fail.” 38) “I am the Lord's servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. 39) At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40) where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth. 41) When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42) In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43) But why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44) As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45) Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” 46) And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord 47) and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, 48) for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49) for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is His name. 50) His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51) He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; He has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52) He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 53) He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. 54) He has helped His servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55) to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.” 56) Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home. -------- Recorded at North Site - 24Nov2024

People are receiving poison pen letters in a seaside English village, and an Irish woman who recently moved there is suspected. Ashley & Matt review Wicked Little Letters in this episode.
A mix-and-match episode of BEHIND THE LENS this week as w/d/e/actor RICHARD RYAN joins us talking about ART OF DECEPTION. Plus, my exclusive interview with director THEA SHARROCK discussing the wickedly delicious WICKED LITTLE LETTERS. First up is my prerecorded exclusive interview with director THEA SHARROCK go in-depth on one of the most hilarious films you will see all year – WICKED LITTLE LETTERS. I laughed so hard that I had to watch the film twice to hear all of the dialogue. Boasting a first-rate cast with Olivia Coleman, Jessie Buckley, Timothy Spall, Gemma Jones, Eileen Atkins, Joanna Scanlon, and Anjana Vasan, with a script by Jonny Sweet, WICKED LITTLE LETTERS is quite simply, perfection. Based on a true event from the 1920's United Kingdom, foul language itself becomes a character thanks to the verbatim verbiage of the profane letters at the heart of this tale, which is then punctuated with outstanding production values and performances while also addressing themes as topical today as in 1920 – freedom of speech, oppression, workplace discrimination, socio-economic discrimination, discrimination against women, and overall misogyny. Then take a listen as the man wearing all the hats, RICHARD RYAN, joins us talking about his latest film, the action-packed thriller ART OF DECEPTION. Talking about choosing collaborators, developing the script, a prolonged "part-time" shooting schedule, post-production, and more, Richard covers his roles as producer, writer, director, actor, editor, line producer, post-production supervisor, VFX, and the inherent challenges he faced in bringing ART OF DECEPTION to life. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
Sunday 24th March, 2024 - West Site Speaker - Gemma Jones Gemma takes us through the events of the first Palm Sunday, Luke 19:28-41 28) After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29) As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30) ‘Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31) If anyone asks you, “Why are you untying it?” say, “The Lord needs it.”' 32) Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33) As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, ‘Why are you untying the colt?' 34) They replied, ‘The Lord needs it.' 35) They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36) As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. 37) When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 38) ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!' ‘Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!' 39) Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples!' 40) ‘I tell you,' he replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.' 41) As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42) and said, ‘If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace – but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43) The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. 44) They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognise the time of God's coming to you.' ------- Recorded at West Site - 24Mar2024
This minor Woody Allen film asks a really pertinent question for a romance podcast: do we fool ourselves by looking to the stars, horoscopes, psychics or fortune tellers to comfort and convince us that love is out there waiting for us? Or does this harmless belief in destiny help us survive a harsh and often cruel world? While possibly making us very annoying to friends and family? Gemma Jones is the sparkling center of this quietly humorous and often emotional movie about holding onto your own brand of spirituality and belief in unseen forces that just might influence your romantic future — as everyone else's romances crumble around you.https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comAs usual the trailer for You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger doesn't quite capture the playful, bright, sharp yet affectionate mood of this movie, and so much of that is due to its amazing actors."Experts say when accountability looks like individuals deciding whether they want to watch a movie or not, that isn't much justice at all." Excellent opinion piece on the complicated life of Woody Allen set against the cultural #metoo movement. "I'm blue collar — I finish a movie, sit around for a couple of days, and think: what the hell am I doing? It's boring. And I start working on something else." Woody Allen answers reader questions for Time magazine.A nice interview with Lucy Punch on developing the sex worker character Charmaine in the movie. And finally, an interview with the amazing Gemma Jones on how she landed and developed her starring role — she was the emotional center in Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility, and she is very much the emotional center of this movie, too.Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode, please click share in your podcast app and tell your friends! If you want to make our Hannah angry, simply refer to God's Own Country, Francis Lee's 2017 film about love between an isolated young sheep farmer (Josh O'Connor) and a Romanian migrant worker (Alex Secareanu) set on a failing farm, as the Yorkshire Brokeback Mountain and watch her Bruce Banner it up. And right enough. It's fair to say that love for this film, for its cast (hello also Ian Hart and Gemma Jones) and for its closing song from Patrick Wolf is in the air for Yosra and Mick, too. So please enjoy three women having a lovely chat about a wonderful bit of cinema. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Hosted on Acast. It's a new year and we're back with the absolute charm bomb that is Bridget Jones's Diary. With a plot knicked from Pride & Prejudice, a perfect cast, and a main character who embodies the complexities and inanities of modern womanhood, this movie reminds you that you're lovable, just as you are.
Coming up in this episode, we've got two conversations with the Friends of the Hurtwood, the group responsible for maintaining the incredible area of open space on our doorstep, which I know contributed a great deal to keeping me healthy and sane during the lockdowns. Lynda also speaks to local charity Care Ashore, and to Gemma Jones from Reconnections. We've also got poetry from Trisha Broomfield.
Today's guest is Julie Simmons, I'm really excited about our guest today. I was lucky enough to interview both Tracy Defoe in episode 53 and Gemma Jones in episode 54 and they talked about Kata Girl Geeks, which if you haven't checked it out yet, is an awesome community of women who are growing and learning together. Both Tracy and Gemma both suggested that I reach out and talk to our guest today Julie Simmons and I'm glad I did. Aside from recently being voted volunteer of the year for 2021 for Kata Girl Geeks, Julie currently works with her husband Scott as part of the Scott Wade Simmons & Associates, LLC providing leadership coaching and training in Strategy Development and Deployment, Leadership Development, and the Improvement Kata & Coaching Kata. Julie's passion is helping others develop their skills, capabilities, and confidence to solve complex challenges in their organizations using scientific thinking. Julie has had the honor to be a frequent speaker and presenter at KataCon. Folks in the Portland, Oregon & Vancouver, Washington area are familiar with Julie's 15 years of leadership at the Northwest High-Performance Enterprise Consortium. Prior to that, she worked for The Boeing Company for 14 years in various roles including her work as a manufacturing process analyst where she became a Certified Accelerated Improvement workshop leader and supported several Shingajitsu led kaizen events. Julie's passion for helping others really shows through. I am sure you will enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Here's our guest today, Julie Simmons. Adam Robert Lewis sits down, virtually, with director Sara Sugarman.Sara, born in Rhyl, began her career as an actress making her television debut aged just 14 as ’Jessica Samuels’ in the BBC teen-drama ‘Grange Hill’.Sara moved away from her acting career in the 1990s and decided to further a career behind the scenes, directing.Sara gained praise behind the camera with a number of award-winning short films. Some of Sara’s early directorial pieces took place on location in the Garw Valley, where I grew up and consider home. Sara’s 1996 film ‘Valley Girls’, starring Gemma Jones and Wendy Phillips especially resonated with me. Wendy, affectionately known as Mrs Mop due to her previous job as our school cleaner, inspired me to go after my dream of acting. Sara and her faith in Wendy’s talent indicated that the dream was indeed possible.Sara returned to the Garw Valley in 2001 to film cult-classic ‘Very Annie Mary’, a musical-comedy written and directed by Sara, starring Rachel Griffiths and Jonathan Pryce. I have fond memories of this proudly Welsh film and coincidentally consider it as my first acting job albeit as a very young extra amongst the crowds!Sara soon moved from the Welsh valleys to the Silver Screen of Hollywood, where she directed motion pictures with Disney including teen-flick ‘Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen’, starring Lindsey Lohan, Adam Garcia and Megan Fox.Sara’s most recent project “Saving the Cinema’ for Sky Movies, follows the story of Liz Evans and her campaign to save the local Lyric Cinema, starring Samantha Morton, Tom Felton and Jonathon Pryce. This interview held an extra ‘special something’ for me, almost a feeling of things coming full circle. Being able to discuss how my passion for acting began because of Sara and her work was truly an honour. And so with every story, we must start at the beginning…Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/brewingactors)

Here we go! ///// > ///// BRANDI: “Today’s movie is ROCKETMAN (2019), the biographical musical film directed by Dexter Fletcher, and written for the screen by Lee Hall. It features a star-studded cast with the likes of Taron Egerton, Bryce Dallas Howard, Gemma Jones and so many others. Its executive produced by Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish also has a producer credit.” SUNNI: “This movie chronicles how Elton John went from a child piano prodigy to his skyrocketing rise to stardom and his struggle to overcome the vices we hear so many rock stars battle with. It also delights us with the vocal stylings of Taron Egerton as the leading man of the movie Elton Hercules John.” No spoilers. BRANDI: “My first impression of the film is its similarity to ACROSS THE UNIVERSE in the way that the songs tell the story of a particular scene or scene transitions and situations. I always enjoy a musical, especially when people who I had no idea could sing bust out their vocal chops. We get to hear Taron Egerton, who sang “I'm Still Standing” in 2016's animated musical SING, take the reins and we even get a taste of Bryce Dallas Howard, Gemma Jones, and Jamie Bell's musical abilities as well.” SUNNI: “Taron Egerton and Sir Elton John worked together previously, in KINGSMEN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE. I wonder if they talked about his vocal abilities at that time? Fun fact: Elton John had Justin Timberlake in mind to play him when he and David Furnish began working on the film. Tom Hardy was originally signed on to play the role of Elton John, and they were going to have him lip sync on a vocal track. He said in an interview that he's not a singer and in his words, "It's hard to open my mouth that way." BRANDI: “If you're a fan of Elton John's music, or if you only know one or two songs like ‘Benny and the Jets’ or ‘Tiny Dancer’, you'll probably enjoy the movie. If you're not a fan of musicals, then you probably won't.” SUNNI: “ROCKETMAN (2019) is a fantastical biopic full of vivid colors, outrageously spectacular costumes, and brilliantly performed music. If you're curious about either, then you should invest two hours. At least it'll put a tune in your head.” Rotten Tomatoes: 89% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 69 One Movie Punch: 8.0/10 ROCKETMAN (2019) is rated R and is currently available to rent or own on Amazon Prime, Vudu, YouTube, Apple TV, and Redbox!
Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have capped off day three of the 49er World Championship in Auckland in typical fashion. The Olympic champions are second after the final day of qualifying, a point behind Germany.Oscar Gunn and Logan Dunning Beck are sixth.Nacra 17 sailors Olivia Mackay and Jason SaThe scorecard doesn't always tell the full story but it shows Peter Burling and Blair Tuke in a strong position after the second day of the Hyundai 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships in Auckland. The pair banked two thirds, a first and an eighth in their four races to jump up from 11th to second in the 49er class, only one point behind Benjamin Bildstein and David Hussl of Austria. But the four-time world champions and defending Olympic champions had to claw their way back into a couple of races in sometimes treacherously shifty conditions. The breeze built around the middle of the day, climbing to about 15 knots, but died off completely in the late afternoon as the last 49er race was concluding. Some boats were almost pushed back over the finish as they limped to the line."It was definitely a really tricky day out there," Burling admitted. "We had a fair share of either going backwards or forwards in races at times but we are pretty happy to walk away with the scorecard we did. It could always have been a bit better but it could also have been worse. All in all with how tricky it was, we were pretty happy."Logan Dunning Beck and Oscar Gunn were also pretty satisfied after winning two of their races which helped them climb from 33rd to seventh overall. With one more day of qualifying before the top third move into gold fleet, the priority is to post consistently good scores, especially as there are a gaggle of teams within striking distance of the leaders."We survived the day," Gunn said. "It's just about not throwing it away, really. A lot of people screwed it up today and yesterday so there are a few good guys who aren't in contention any more."We tried really hard to throw it away but we haven't yet so we will keep on chipping away and get some more good scores on the board."Alex Maloney and Molly Meech did mostly that in their first day of racing at these world championships and sit fourth in the 49erFX fleet after four races. They posted two top-three results across their four races and had two other middling scores on a day when some of the favourites struggled.Americans Paris Henken and Anna Tobias grabbed an early lead ahead of Ida Marie Baad Nielsen and Marie Thusgaard Olsen of Denmark with Singapore's Kimberly Lim and Cecilia Low third."I thought we did a lot of things well but we also made some mistakes that are easy to see in hindsight," Maloney said. The top four teams in the Nacra 17 did a really good job of that in their four races and only one point separates the quartet. Great Britain's John Gimson and Anna Burnet hold a slim lead over compatriots Ben Saxton and Nicola Boniface with Riley Gibbs and Anna Weis of the United States third.Gemma Jones and Josh Porebski were the best of the Kiwis in 16th. Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson are 17th and Liv Mackay and Jason Saunders 20th on a congested leaderboard that shows only 21 points between the top 20 teams. There's still a long way to go in these world championships, which finish on Sunday, and it will be something of a war of attrition. The 49ers, in particular, have already had two long days, but Burling and Tuke were relishing the battle ahead."It's what you train for, isn't it?" Burling said. And those two know better than any what it takes to win. unders have had a win and a third to improve to 11th overall after six races.

Rocketman is a spectacle the size of Elton John, four films in one. It contains a biopic, jukebox musical, addiction recovery story and a romance between friends. The soundtrack ties the story together by taking historical liberties to tell a fantastical story about one of the best living songwriters. Charlie is joined by Vox’s film critic, Alissa Wilkinson to breakdown the film and deconstruct how its melodic themes create an emotional arc. He also speaks with Giles Martin (son of 5th Beatle George Martin) who music directed the film and soundtrack about how he assembled an entire life’s work into a singular narrative. This week Sammi and Beau get a reprieve in the form of the crackling onscreen chemistry between Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth in 2001's 'Bridget Jones's Diary,' a loose homage to Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice.' This week the only yelling is over how superhuman Colin Firth's eye acting is and Hugh Grant's questionable attributes, with the occasional eye roll directed at the soundtrack. Bridget Jones's Diary was directed by Sharon Maguire and stars Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent and Gemma Jones.

Intercepted? The people smugglers boats are not intercepted. They are welcomed. With open arms. According to the Encarta dictionary, to intercept is “to prevent people or objects from reaching their destination or target by stopping, diverting, or seizing them.” Encarta gives this example “The contraband was intercepted by police at the dock.” The Gillard government doesn’t intercept smugglers’ boats. The smugglers clients are welcomed, given government homes and put on welfare. So far 1278 clients have been welcomed this month, 6535 this year. Ms. Gillard and her ministers have welcomed 91 boats this year. The government’s spin doctors won’t tell us, but 2GB’s Ray Hadley revealed on 24 July that once again, smugglers’ clients at the Villawood detention centre have jammed blankets into smoke alarms and set their more than ample taxpayer funded accommodation on fire. Meanwhile, moving smugglers’ clients from the crowded facility on Christmas Island to the mainland is costing up to $180,000 a flight, according to Gemma Jones in The Daily Telegraph (24/7)

It never rains but pours. The last week has been a veritable flood of wtf moments, so much so that we couldn't get through our run down. Some of the topics we covered included Queenslands succesful campaign against chailk on footpaths and funeral procession escorts, Gemma Jones and of course, 150kgs of illegal cheese.
