Sunday 24th November 2024 - West and North Sites Sunday 1st December 2024 - Central site AM & PM Speaker - Gemma Jones Gemma introduces our Christmas series - "Come and See!" with a look at Mary's Song in Luke chapter 1. -------- Luke 1 v 26 - 56 26) In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27) to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28) The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.” 29) Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30) But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favour with God. 31) You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32) He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33) and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” 34) “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35) The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36) Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37) For no word from God will ever fail.” 38) “I am the Lord's servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. 39) At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40) where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth. 41) When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42) In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43) But why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44) As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45) Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” 46) And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord 47) and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, 48) for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. Saul Marron was born in Crieff, Scotland. He attended St Columba's High School, then went on to train at the Space in Dundee, Scotland; before moving to London to complete his degree with East 15 Acting School. Saul's professional debut was in a new play by up-and-coming writer Tommy Kearney called "Madonna & Me" performed at the Off West End Jermyn Street Theatre. Since 2008 he has been a part of the international hit show "Sh*tfaced Shakespeare". After years of sell-out runs the show transferred to the U.S and since 2016 have been performing on the West End. Saul's first TV role was for a BBC pilot "The London Affair", working with British director Nick Hatton-Jones. Adam Robert Lewis sits down, virtually, with director Sara Sugarman.Sara, born in Rhyl, began her career as an actress making her television debut aged just 14 as ’Jessica Samuels’ in the BBC teen-drama ‘Grange Hill’.Sara moved away from her acting career in the 1990s and decided to further a career behind the scenes, directing.Sara gained praise behind the camera with a number of award-winning short films. Some of Sara’s early directorial pieces took place on location in the Garw Valley, where I grew up and consider home. Sara’s 1996 film ‘Valley Girls’, starring Gemma Jones and Wendy Phillips especially resonated with me. Wendy, affectionately known as Mrs Mop due to her previous job as our school cleaner, inspired me to go after my dream of acting. Sara and her faith in Wendy’s talent indicated that the dream was indeed possible.Sara returned to the Garw Valley in 2001 to film cult-classic ‘Very Annie Mary’, a musical-comedy written and directed by Sara, starring Rachel Griffiths and Jonathan Pryce. We get to hear Taron Egerton, who sang “I'm Still Standing” in 2016's animated musical SING, take the reins and we even get a taste of Bryce Dallas Howard, Gemma Jones, and Jamie Bell's musical abilities as well.” SUNNI: “Taron Egerton and Sir Elton John worked together previously, in KINGSMEN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE. I wonder if they talked about his vocal abilities at that time? Fun fact: Elton John had Justin Timberlake in mind to play him when he and David Furnish began working on the film. Tom Hardy was originally signed on to play the role of Elton John, and they were going to have him lip sync on a vocal track. Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have capped off day three of the 49er World Championship in Auckland in typical fashion.The Olympic champions are second after the final day of qualifying, a point behind Germany.Oscar Gunn and Logan Dunning Beck are sixth.Nacra 17 sailors Olivia Mackay and Jason SaThe scorecard doesn't always tell the full story but it shows Peter Burling and Blair Tuke in a strong position after the second day of the Hyundai 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships in Auckland.The pair banked two thirds, a first and an eighth in their four races to jump up from 11th to second in the 49er class, only one point behind Benjamin Bildstein and David Hussl of Austria.But the four-time world champions and defending Olympic champions had to claw their way back into a couple of races in sometimes treacherously shifty conditions.The breeze built around the middle of the day, climbing to about 15 knots, but died off completely in the late afternoon as the last 49er race was concluding. Some boats were almost pushed back over the finish as they limped to the line."It was definitely a really tricky day out there," Burling admitted. "We had a fair share of either going backwards or forwards in races at times but we are pretty happy to walk away with the scorecard we did. It could always have been a bit better but it could also have been worse. All in all with how tricky it was, we were pretty happy."Logan Dunning Beck and Oscar Gunn were also pretty satisfied after winning two of their races which helped them climb from 33rd to seventh overall.With one more day of qualifying before the top third move into gold fleet, the priority is to post consistently good scores, especially as there are a gaggle of teams within striking distance of the leaders."We survived the day," Gunn said. "It's just about not throwing it away, really. A lot of people screwed it up today and yesterday so there are a few good guys who aren't in contention any more."We tried really hard to throw it away but we haven't yet so we will keep on chipping away and get some more good scores on the board."Alex Maloney and Molly Meech did mostly that in their first day of racing at these world championships and sit fourth in the 49erFX fleet after four races. They posted two top-three results across their four races and had two other middling scores on a day when some of the favourites struggled.Americans Paris Henken and Anna Tobias grabbed an early lead ahead of Ida Marie Baad Nielsen and Marie Thusgaard Olsen of Denmark with Singapore's Kimberly Lim and Cecilia Low third."I thought we did a lot of things well but we also made some mistakes that are easy to see in hindsight," Maloney said.The top four teams in the Nacra 17 did a really good job of that in their four races and only one point separates the quartet. Great Britain's John Gimson and Anna Burnet hold a slim lead over compatriots Ben Saxton and Nicola Boniface with Riley Gibbs and Anna Weis of the United States third.Gemma Jones and Josh Porebski were the best of the Kiwis in 16th. Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson are 17th and Liv Mackay and Jason Saunders 20th on a congested leaderboard that shows only 21 points between the top 20 teams.There's still a long way to go in these world championships, which finish on Sunday, and it will be something of a war of attrition.The 49ers, in particular, have already had two long days, but Burling and Tuke were relishing the battle ahead."It's what you train for, isn't it?" Intercepted? The people smugglers boats are not intercepted. They are welcomed. With open arms. According to the Encarta dictionary, to intercept is “to prevent people or objects from reaching their destination or target by stopping, diverting, or seizing them.” Encarta gives this example “The contraband was intercepted by police at the dock.” The Gillard government doesn’t intercept smugglers’ boats. The smugglers clients are welcomed, given government homes and put on welfare. So far 1278 clients have been welcomed this month, 6535 this year. Ms. Gillard and her ministers have welcomed 91 boats this year. The government’s spin doctors won’t tell us, but 2GB’s Ray Hadley revealed on 24 July that once again, smugglers’ clients at the Villawood detention centre have jammed blankets into smoke alarms and set their more than ample taxpayer funded accommodation on fire. Meanwhile, moving smugglers’ clients from the crowded facility on Christmas Island to the mainland is costing up to $180,000 a flight, according to Gemma Jones in The Daily Telegraph (24/7)
