[School of Movies 2025] After the harsh, oppressive atmosphere of I Saw the TV Glow we turn to an altogether funnier tale of trans discovery with Vera Drew's semiautobiographical, anarchic reshaping of DC's Clown Princess of Crime. From the painfully normalising cornfields of Smallville, Kansas comes a child who asks their alarmed mother "Was in born in the wrong body?". The only possible response to this is of course sessions at Arkham Asylum with Doctor Crane and a prescription of Smilex to chase that depression and anxiety away. We follow this confused young person to Gotham, where they find their calling in a thinly-veiled Saturday Night Live setup, doing stand-up comedy alongside The Penguin, Ra's al Ghul and a trans-masc chap named Mr J, riffing hard on both fallen Robin Jason Todd and Jared Leto's Joker. Our hero gives themselves the mantle of Joker the Harlequin... and comedy in Gotham will never be the same! This movie was pulled together during lockdown, and thrives on a garage-punk, scrapbook style that energetically propels you through the troubled life of someone just trying to be themselves in a loud, chaotic world. In this Film Ireland podcast, Gemma Creagh talks to Vera Drew, Director & Co-Writer of ‘The People's Joker, which has a special Trans Image/Trans Experience (TITE) Film Festival preview screening at the Light House Cinema on 14th February 2025. The People's Joker is a DIY parody film and hilarious reimagining of the classic autobiographical coming-of-age story follows an unconfident, closeted trans girl as she moves to Gotham City to make it big as a comedian by joining the cast of UCB Live – a government-sanctioned late night sketch show in a world where comedy has been outlawed. As mainstream success eludes our heroine, leading her to unite with a ragtag team of rejects, misfits, and a certain love interest named Mister J, “Joker the Harlequin” is born again as a confident (and psychotic) joker on a collision course with the city's fascist caped crusader. Vats of feminizing chemicals, sexy cartoon interludes, scarecrow psychiatrists, CGI Lorne Michaels, and psychedelic gender dysphoria all play supporting roles. Helmed by writer/director/editor/star Vera Drew and using her own life experiences as a basis for the film, The People's Joker is a deeply personal journey that's as much documentary as it is parody. Support 'The People's Joker': https://www.thepeoplesjoker.com/ Joku and Rosa review and analyze 'The People's Joker' a 2022 / 2024 American parody superhero film directed by Vera Drew, and written by Vera Drew and Bri LeRose. The film unofficially parodies characters from the Batman comics, and the main character is a transgender woman based on the Joker, played by Drew. The film also features Scott Aukerman, Tim Heidecker, Maria Bamford, David Liebe Hart, Robert Wuhl, and Bob Odenkirk in supporting roles. We also review 'Nosferatu' a 2024 American gothic horror film written and directed by Robert Eggers. It is a remake of F. W. Murnau's 1922 film Nosferatu, itself inspired by Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. The film stars Bill Skarsgård as the vampire Nosferatu and Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp as the married Hutter couple, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe in supporting roles. We also review and discuss 'Crash' a 1996 Canadian erotic thriller film written, produced and directed by David Cronenberg, based on J. G. Ballard's 1973 novel of the same name. Starring James Spader, Deborah Kara Unger, Elias Koteas, Holly Hunter and Rosanna Arquette, it follows a film producer who, after surviving a car crash, becomes involved with a group of symphorophiliacs who are aroused by car crashes and tries to rekindle his sexual relationship with his wife. Director, co-writer, and star of The People's Joker (one of our favorite films of the year), Vera Drew joins for a discussion of the sexy, taboo-breaking, teen thriller Cruel Intentions. A 90s update of the 18th century Peirre Choderlos de Laclos novel 'Les Liaisons dangereuses' (aka Dangerous Liaisons), the film is a darkly comic and gleefully misanthropic erotic thrill ride featuring a top notch cast of up-comers-comers playing deeply unlikable - but incredibly sexy - people, who are all (in the words of our guest) "acting their asses off."We discuss the sensational young cast, including Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair, Ryan Phillippe, and an exceptional Sarah Michelle Gellar, and find delights in the "teens play-acting adults" uncanniness of the movie's milieu. Then we revel in the film's preternatural handling on eroticism and desire, finding ways to constantly steam up the screen even while the actors (mostly) keep their clothes on. Finally, we find a through-line from some of Vera's other favorite films to Cruel Intentions, note how the movie defies a "so bad its good" valuation, and illimunate why criticisms of the film's supposed moralism might be reading it wrong. In April 2021, Film Comment published a Trans Cinema Roundtable Podcast, in which two trans film critics and two trans filmmakers answered questions submitted by listeners on what constitutes a cinema of transness. Now, two of those panelists—Caden Mark Gardner and Willow Catelyn Maclay—are about to publish a new book on that very subject. Corpses, Fools and Monsters is a thorough inquiry into the history, present, and future of what Caden and Willow call the “trans film image”—not a fully developed cinema, yet, but gestures, glimpses, and traces that have been visible in film from its earliest days and have now gained a renewed creative force. On today's episode, Caden and Willow join Film Comment Editor Devika Girish to talk about the extensive research they understood for the book, why representation can be a complex term for trans cinephiles, and films from reappraised classics like Jonathan Demme's The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Toshio Matsumoto's Funeral Parade of Roses (1969) to new works by trans filmmakers, including Vera Drew's The People's Joker and Jane Schoenbrun's I Saw the TV Glow.

We're down a Cinebud this week, but worry not because we called in a couple of Jokers to compensate. To be more accurate, our very special guests joining us on this episode are two of the people who worked on viral and cinematic sensation The People's Joker: composers Justin Krol and Quinn Scharber. The Milwaukee-based duo are the driving force behind the film's score and thus have enjoyed a front-row seat to its tumultuous and controversial existence. We won't get too into the legal weeds here, but to summarize: The People's Joker debuted at the Toronto Film Festival back in 2022, was shelved under the threat of legal action from Warner Bros., snuck in a secret midnight screening at the Milwaukee Film Festival in 2023 and then finally began its proper theatrical run last month. With Kpolly on the sidelines for this one, Dori uses her finely honed interviewing skills to get Krol and Scharber chatting about their early days as Milwaukee musicians, their connection to the movie's star/creative force Vera Drew, and the chutzpah required to get into this very competitive field.Produced and edited by Marcus Doucette

Vera Drew is the creator of The People's Joker, which evolved from an attempt to re-edit Todd Phillip's 2019 into its own completely original work of art — a very affectionate parody of Batman mythology and all the ideas it takes for granted. Combining comedy, animation, and Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher's flair for cartoonish drama, it's a punkish, dreamy dismantling and rebuilding of Gotham as we know it, made with verve and daring. We talk with Drew about making a microbudget masterpiece, dealing with some legal issues, and scoring a cameo by Robert Wuhl. You may remember "The People's Joker" as that film Warner Brothers tried to shut down for copyright infringement during the 2022 Toronto film Festival. The more interesting story about this film is the ingenuity and a punk rock spirit in which it was created. Drew takes us on a journey of how her origin story as a trans woman coming up in the comedy world started (in her head at least) to merge with that of the Joker, and the rather unusual way this film was dreamed up. PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Vera Drew (THE PEOPLE'S JOKER) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss her career journey and the making of her debut feature THE PEOPLE'S JOKER - in theaters now! From her work with Second City in college and her love of performing live comedy… to her first internship working with the amazing Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim… to going on to editing on show's like Sacha Baron Cohen's WHO IS AMERICA, TIM AND ERIC'S BEDTIME STORES, COMEDY BANG BANG, and I THINK YOU SHOULD LEAVE… to the moment that she realized it was time to move on and do her own thing… to how she came to the decision to tell her deeply personal story in the form of THE PEOPLE'S JOKER - a queer coming of age movie that parodies the characters of DC comics… to how she pulled off such a technically complex production while simultaneously feeling she was physically coming apart herself… to her film's triumphant premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and the legalities that followed which ALMOST set the film back… to the pros and cons of crowd funding and the delicate balance of managing a team of uniquely different visual artists… Vera truly opens up in this inspiring conversation that is both comical and touching. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a filmmaker trying to cope with the anxiety of directing, Vera gives sound advice on what to consider before going the “parody” or “fair use” route with a project, and Adam finally confronts Joe over an issue he's had with him for years. Meet Adam and Joe THIS WEEKEND at ASTRONOMICON in Livonia, MI (April 12th - 14th)! Adam will also be appearing at NEW JERSEY HORROR CON in Edison, NJ (April 19 - 21), TEXAS FRIGHTMARE WEEKEND in Irving, TX (May 17 - 19), MONSTERPALOOZA in Pasadena, CA (May 31 - June 2), and SCAREFEST in Lexington, KY (Oct 18 - 20)! The People's Joker is a masterpiece. It's a rude queer coming of age story unlike anything I've ever experienced. Watching the film let me see stories that I personally couldn't experience and see perspectives outside my own. With the film being a satire of so many characters I've known my whole life, it was wonderful to get to see them used as tools to tell this story. The director and co-writer Vera Drew said something during the post Q&A that has stuck with me since. She spoke about how she made this film for young her because she really needed something like this. Something about that hit me hard because it's a film that hasn't been given the ability to find those people who need it. When people create art often times it what they want to see without realizing how many more people need to see it as well. No one knows how many nerdy kids are struggling with their identity out there in the world who fear what will come of becoming who they want to be. I truly hope this film finds the people who need it because as much as it is crude and funny, it's a story of discovery and becoming your authentic self. I didn't review the film because I don't think I'm equipped to do it. I don't have the insight and a cis man going on about his thoughts on something like this isn't something I truly want to read either so why would you? Instead, I reached out to Vera Drew to come talk with me about the film. We talk a lot about comedy, art and their experiences. We also talk about bologna and Joel Schumacher for a long time. What we don't talk about is the legal circus surrounding the film so do not click play expecting that. Instead listen and support Vera so the people who could benefit from seeing a movie as deeply personal and as queer as The People's Joker. Vera's Patreon Vera's Twitter

This week Art and Labor is joined by Vera Drew, director of The People's Joker, history's most anticipated queer-coming-of-age indictment of the contemporary comedy landscape through the lens of Batman's Rogues Gallery. We yak it up with Vera over the stunning consistency Ben Folds has to the queer experience, the tenderness of her relationship with … Continue reading "179 – Joker Proletarianism w/ Vera Drew"

Buon ascolto!Support the show
