Living in a post-Venice/Telluride/Toronto world means it's time get serious about our Oscar predictions and that's just what we're doing this week. On episode 307 of the AwardsWatch podcast, AW Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson is joined by Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello to look at what shined at the fests, what lost its luster and the introduction of a new bombshell in the villa. In our conversation, we begin with the top winners at Venice and with Alexander Payne's contentious jury, including how Jim Jarmusch's Father Mother Sister Brother could factor in and if Benny Safdie's Silver Lion Best Director win for The Smashing Machine was what that film needed. Next we move to Telluride, where Hamnet was the most-liked film (while we still await the results of Michael's Telluride Blog polls of critics and non-critics) and how the Cannes winners held their ground. Moving to Toronto and Hamnet's People's Choice Award win keeps it at as a top tier contender and we talk about some films, like 1st runner-up Frankenstein, fared better at TIFF than it did at Venice and Telluride. Then we dive into Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, which began screening last week. While Ryan and Sophia had the film at the top of their predictions list last month, I was the idiot who rashly dropped it out of my top 10. That mistake is corrected here and we talk about the narratives at play for PTA, Chloé Zhao for Hamnet, Ryan Coogler for Sinners and Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, YouTube and more. This podcast runs 1h37m. We will be back next week with a preview of the 2025 New York Film Festival. Till then, let's get into it. There have been a number of big summer movies like "F1: The Movie," "Superman" and "Jurrassic World: Rebirth." But these popcorn movies are not likely destined for big awards. October releases “The Smashing Machine” – Dwayne Johnson tries his hand at mixed-martial arts as UFC champion Mark Kerr. The makeup may be a stretch, but Benny Safdie directs, Emily Blunt disappears in an unlikely role. “Tron: Ares” – Jared Leto gets to run the race. Jeff Bridges is here, too, but this is about a new program (Ares) that’s about to embark on a dangerous mission. “Roofman” – A robber evades authorities by hanging out in a toy store. Good question, but it will have that DD-L prestige. “Kiss of the Spider Woman” – Jennifer Lopez stars in the Tony winner fans have been asking for. The big question: Were they looking for Lopez to star in it? Bill Conden directs. “If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You” – Rose Byrne gets the Oscar buzz as a woman trying to juggle multiple traumas, including a sick child and an absent husband. “Soul on Fire” – This is the story of a St. Louis native who survived burns which covered his body. Here we are, with another Adam Sandler Netflix movie! I typically don't even tune in for these because they're quite literally all the same... but now they've reached back to a comedy classic that people do care about. I only watched the first Happy Gilmore film a few months ago, and I found it to be consistently entertaining. I will say, though, that I'm a bit more of a Billy Madison guy. I also kind of think it'd be more interesting to catch up with him three decades later, rather than Happy Gilmore whose original movie was more based around a specific event happening to his family. Oh well, Happy Gilmore 2 is now out on Netflix. So, is this another Netflix/Adam Sandler comedy dud... or is nostalgia going to carry this to being the best Sandler comedy in decades? To kick off a new cycle featuring musicians turned actors, Julian, Madeline and Emilio rewatch 'Licorice Pizza', Paul Thomas Anderson's 2021 film and love letter to the San Fernando Valley circa 1973. Populated with memorable turns from Bradley Cooper, Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Skylar Gisondo, Benny Safdie and others, the film is anchored by the performances of newcomers Cooper Hoffman (son of late great PTA favorite Phillip Seymour Hoffman) and Alana Haim, the youngest of three musician sisters that make up the band HAIM. The group discusses their own personal histories with HAIM, as well as the band's many collaborations with PTA, who directed several of their music videos, They then dig into the unusual friendship dynamic between Gary and Alana, discuss several of the reoccurring motifs, praise the film's visual aesthetic, the many great needle drops, and weigh in the film's polarizing final note. And stick around to the end for an Unlikely Shared Universe first! Would you rather go into business with Gary Valentine or Max Fischer? COMEBACK OR BACKTRACK?! Greg Alba & Coy Jandreau (DC Studios) dive deep into the week's biggest entertainment stories with unfiltered opinions and plenty of laughs. They kick things off by responding to feedback from last week's podcast, questioning if they've fallen into the clickbait trap, and exploring how tribalism is ruining media literacy. The conversation then shifts to Dwayne Johnson's bold career reinvention, taking on a Martin Scorsese Hawaiian crime saga (potentially alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt) and starring in Benny Safdie's The Smashing Machine. Coy & Greg break down what this shift could mean for The Rock's future as a serious actor, drawing comparisons to Dave Bautista's transformative career path. They then tackle Will Smith's sequel spree—Hancock 2 and I Am Legend 2 are officially in development—as they debate whether this is a strategic comeback post-Oscars slap or a risky play to reclaim his blockbuster legacy. Smith's musical return also sparks discussion on his evolving public image and audience trust. Next, the duo dives into Amazon's acquisition of the James Bond franchise, expressing concerns about a potential Bond Cinematic Universe that could dilute the franchise's classic charm. Will Amazon respect 007's legacy, or will we see unnecessary spin-offs and forced TV shows? They also break down: Zack Snyder & James Gunn's viral photo—uniting fandoms or stirring the pot? Marvel's recent project cancellations and the latest Daredevil: Born Again updates. The potential return of The Defenders to the MCU. Coy's thoughts on name-dropping, industry insecurities, and the evolution of YouTube discourse. Matt Damon's casting in The Odyssey and the broader question of how Hollywood handles legacy characters. The growing issue of celebrity worship, media clickbait, and fandom extremism. Plus, the conversation takes some wild turns, covering Kanye West, the need to let Zack Snyder move on, and debates over Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Donnie Wahlberg, and Mark Wahlberg. The episode wraps up with big-picture thoughts on fandoms, media culture, and the evolving landscape of Hollywood.
Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes Marvel finally gave us our first official look at The Fantastic Four: First Steps with the release of the teaser trailer during a special launch event Tuesday morning, for which The First Family's cast itself was on hand to present AND WHAT A TRAILER IT WAS…Marvel led the drop with a space race-esque countdown in theme with the film's 1960s aesthetic. We met all of the four main characters and even saw a glimpse of the biggest bad of all…Galactus. Last week we reported on Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch's statements about officially not being a part of Avengers: Doomsday. The very next day the actor recanted his claims in an interview with Business Insider, saying, "I got that wrong, I am in the next one,” adding, "Don't ever believe anything I say." Elsewhere, Chris Evans had a record of his own to set straight, denying the many reports that he has been cast to return in Doomsday while speaking with Esquire, claiming, “That's not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years — ever since Endgame. I've just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no — happily retired!” Finally, in an interview on Andy Cohen Live, the legendary Patti LuPone may have shed some light on the future of Disney Plus series WandaVision and Agatha All Along, saying showrunner Jac Schaeffer told her she doesn't do second seasons. Sunday's Super Bowl LIX, where the Kansas City Chiefs will defend their title against the Philadelphia Eagles, is bound to bring a bevy of trailers for movies and series in tow, but let's talk about what exactly is confirmed, expected, predicted, and everything in between: only three motion picture studios have been willing to invest the substantial sum of $7.5 to $8 million for a single 30-second commercial spot: Disney, Paramount, and Universal. Disney plans to showcase trailers for several anticipated films, including the live-action remake of Snow White, the animated feature Lilo & Stitch, the original animated film Elio, and upcoming Marvel entries such as Thunderbolts*. Paramount is expected to promote its diverse lineup, which includes the Jack Quaid-led action film Novocaine, a musical Smurfs movie featuring Rihanna, and the latest installment in the Mission Impossible franchise, Final Reckoning. Universal may reveal trailers for How To Train Your Dragon, the horror sequel M3GAN 2.0, and Jurassic World Rebirth. Notably absent is Warner Bros and DC Studios. Actor-director Benny Safdie will join Christopher Nolan's upcoming film The Odyssey, following his role as Edward Teller in Oppenheimer. Recent cast additions include Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, and Samantha Morton. Netflix is developing a new Little House on the Prairie series, 40 years after NBC's original adaptation, this time with Rebecca Sonnenshine of The Vampire Diaries and The Boys as showrunner. Jake Gyllenhaal will star in M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming supernatural romantic thriller, which Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks are collaboratively developing as both a film screenplay and a novel. Sony Pictures has set a release date of August 29th for Darren Aronofsky‘s Austin Butler-led feature Caught Stealing. The film that previously held that date, the sixth film in the Insidious franchise, has moved back a year to Aug. 21, 2026. Robert Eggers has closed a deal to write and direct a new Labyrinth film for TriStar Pictures. Plot details are under wraps, but sources tell Deadine that the film is a sequel to, rather than a remake of, Jim Henson's 1986 classic.

Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay take a couple Xannie bars to try and chill out before discussing one of the most stress-inducing films of this century, 'Good Time.' Andy gets us started with a tragically hilarious tale of a friend who had the worst day imaginable that kept on getting worse and led to him being behind bars, as Andy worked desperately to get bail money together to free him before the long weekend. Then the boys talk about a true degenerate masterpiece that is elevated by a career-defining performance from Robert Pattinson, as agent of chaos Connie who wreaks havoc on the unsuspecting people of Queens. Director and co-star Benny Safdie turns in a touching performance as his gentle giant brother, and Jennifer Jason Leigh embodies the spoiled, BPD daughter of wealthy Manhattan family, but it's Buddy Duress who earns co-star MVP honors as the screw up career criminal who can't go several hours without avoiding life-ruining circumstances. This film catapulted the Safdies into the mainstream, as they employed their cinema veritas techniques by using non-actors who are very much emblematic of New York City. So sit down, relax, and enjoy an episode filled with improvised lunacy, as we swap stories and talk about a movie that belongs on the Mount Rushmore of Degen Cinema.
Jodi, Bridget, and Philip convene prior to Thanksgiving to sneak in a quick episode about a holiday classic (Passover, in this case)--2019's 'Uncut Gems,' directed by brothers Josh and Benny Safdie. Adam Sandler plays Howard Ratner, a jewelry dealer in Manhattan's Diamond District. He and his associates, Demany and Julia (LaKeith Stanfield and Julia Fox), work together to attract a high-profile clientele. Kevin Garnett stars as himself as an interested buyer of a mysterious black opal recently obtained by Howard. Set during the 2012 NBA Eastern Conference semi-finals, 'Uncut Gems' imagines an outcome to the series perhaps influenced by Garnett's connection to the opal, as he feels drawn to it. Howard first needs Garnett to win the opal in an auction where he hopes to gain a large enough profit to pay off a gambling debt. When this plan falters due to the opal's poor valuation, Howard sneakily uses the reduced earnings to place a bet on Garnett, now in possession of the opal, hoping KG will score big in game 7. This Rube Goldberg mousetrap of a film sees Howard go from a failed family man pleading with his wife (Idina Menzel), to uptown playboy renting helicopters, to cornered con fending off loan sharks. Over the past several years, he's popped up in bit parts on show's like ‘Shrill,' ‘I Think You Should Leave,' and most notably—given his born and bred Chicago roots—all three seasons of ‘The Bear.' In this episode, Christopher talks about putting together his breakthrough, Chicago-themed stand-up special ‘Live From the Windy City,' which arrives on the Veeps streaming platform August 1st. He also shares stories about collaborating with alt-comedy icons including Joe Pera and Tim Robinson, why he's no longer interested in pursuing SNL after two unsuccessful auditions, that time he almost killed David Letterman, serving as a writer on Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie's ‘The Curse' and more. It is recorded on the lands of the Turrbal and Wurundjeri peoples. We pay our respects to elders past and present. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and Traditional Custodians of the land where we live, work, and learn.
Director and actor Benny Safdie is probably best known for co-directing the film Uncut Gems, but he's also acted in Oppenheimer, Licorice Pizza, and one of host Brittany Luse's personal favorites: Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret. In his latest project, Safdie co-created and acts in Showtime's The Curse. It's an intensely uncomfortable examination of the smoke and mirrors behind your favorite home improvement shows, but it's also a marriage drama – and it picks apart our desire to seem like good people, rather than being good people. Host Brittany Luse sits down with Safdie to learn what makes home improvement shows both soothing and sinister — and the difference between do-gooders and seem-gooders. They also play a game where they're forced to distinguish reality from fiction.
The sun might set at 3:30pm right now, but Lovett or Leave It keeps the lights on all night long over at the Sirius Garage in Los Angeles, California. Benny Safdie stops by to Curse out Lovett. McKenzie Goodwin and Rachel Scanlon give 2023 a long, lingering, lesbian look back. Zainab Johnson has twelve siblings, but only one can be the winner, and the Rant Wheel has these bottoms spinning like a top over tell-all books, swimsuits, and gift guides for the sapphic set. This week, Rupert Murdoch steps down from his position as chair and CEO of Fox, and his son Lachlan replaces him. How might Fox change under Lachlan's leadership? And how has it already changed since Tucker Carlson was fired? Today we discuss that with Brian Stelter, author of the new book Network of Lies: The Epic Saga of Fox News, Donald Trump, and the Battle for American Democracy. Also, David Bianculli reviews the mini-series The Curse, starring Emma Stone and the series co-creators Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie.
