Min 5: AHORA ME VES 3 (3 estrellas) La saga de los ilusionistas vuelve con Now You See Me: Now You Don't (2025), la tercera entrega de la franquicia que inauguró Now You See Me.

Satire, Tropes, and Uncomfortable ConversationsMatthew and Riki examine the 2024 satirical film The American Society of Magical Negroes, starring Justice Smith. This provocative comedy tackles the "magical Negro" trope coined by Spike Lee—where Black characters exist primarily to help white protagonists—by imagining it as a real organization designed to keep white people comfortable. The film blends social commentary with romantic comedy as the protagonist must choose between his assigned role and his own desires.Questions We Discussed:What is the "magical Negro" trope and how has it appeared in films like The Green Mile, The Legend of Bagger Vance, and Ghost?Does the film work better as satirical sketch comedy than as a feature-length movie?Should we have avoided discussing this film as non-Black hosts, or is there value in these conversations across racial lines?Does the romantic comedy element undermine or enhance the film's social commentary? How does the character of Lizzie complicate the film's racial dynamics as a multiracial woman who "passes" as white? Is the final confrontation scene between Aaron and Jason genuine growth or does it center white comfort once again? Can characters like Guinan from Star Trek: The Next Generation or Morpheus from The Matrix fit this trope while still being well-developed?Why did this film generate such polarized reactions, particularly within Black media critique circles?**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. PATREON MOVIE DISCUSSION: Kathryn joins Melvin to discuss Jane Schoenbrun's I Saw the TV Glow! Owen's curiosity in a late-night television show called "The Pink Opaque" leads him to meet Maddy, an upper-classmen at his school. Sounds normal, but it's an off-beat arthouse coming-of-age psychological drama (with a tinge of horror) from the director of We're All Going to the World's Fair, so of course there's more to it! Tune in now!Topics:Most people over the age of, like, 40 years will likely reject the film as too weird or too complex, as a lot of what's at play is very late Millennial/Gen Z.Melvin found the film "emotionally devastating", and begins to explore what that means to him.A lot of dialogue personally connected with Melvin, whereas a lot of visuals personally connected with Kathryn, and the two share specifics.Melvin shares how Cinematic Doctrine hasn't really talked about LGBTQIA+ topics on the podcast because it's such a loaded topic in the Christian community. Even so, one of I Saw the TV Glow's main topics of exploration is gender identity and fluidity, and how it correlates to the coming-of-age experience. As such, they get into the weeds.Does it really make sense to gender-restrict activities when they have nothing to do with one's born-sexuality? How do things in the real world become representative of genitalia?Television may exist in I Saw the TV Glow to represent desire, and the dichotomy between getting lost in the fantasies of our desires or being propelled to act on our desires.Owen's decision at the end of the film hits the way it does because he's finally making a decision about what he's endured the whole film.I Saw the TV Glow is extremely dense and profoundly nuanced, and Melvin is positive that Kathryn and he have barely scratched the surface.Recommendations:Jim Henson Idea Man (2024) (Documentary)Smile 2 (2024) (Movie)MAILBAG: Send questions with your first name and we'll answer them in future episodes! After surviving a drowning in a frozen lake and being declared dead for seven minutes, Cecilia is convinced God had saved her for a purpose. Cecilia takes her final vows to adhere to the evangelical counsels and becomes a nun, being decorated with a rosary. Plot[edit] I Saw the TV Glow is a 2024 American psychological horror drama film written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun. It stars Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine as two troubled high school students whose connection to their favorite television show drives them to question their reality and identities. The supporting cast includes Helena Howard, Lindsey Jordan, Conner O'Malley, Emma Portner, Ian Foreman, Fred Durst, and Danielle Deadwyler. Actress Emma Stone and her husband, comedian Dave McCary, are among the film's producers under their Fruit Tree company. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 18, 2024. It was given a limited theatrical release by A24 in the United States on May 3, with its theatrical release expanding to Canada and nationwide in the US on May 17. The film marks the second entry in what Schoenbrun refers to as their[a] Screen Trilogy, following the film We're All Going to the World's Fair (2021) and preceding an upcoming trilogy of novels titled Public Access Afterworld.[4][5] Plot In 1996, isolated teenagers Owen and Maddy bond over the young adult television show The Pink Opaque, which follows teenagers Isabel and Tara as they use their psychic connection to fight the villain Mr. Melancholy, who has the power to warp time and reality. Owen's father Frank derides him for watching the show, while Maddy feels deeply connected to it. Two years later, while watching The Pink Opaque, Owen notices Maddy crying. Maddy explains that she has resolved to run away to escape her abusive stepfather. She implores Owen to join her, but he loses his nerve and stays. Owen's mother Brenda dies from cancer, Maddy goes missing, and The Pink Opaque is canceled after five seasons.

I Saw the TV Glow is a strange and pleasantly unsettling new film from writer and director Jane Schoenbrun. It's about two teenagers (Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine) who bond so strongly over a cult monster-of-the-week TV show that it becomes their entire identities. When the show gets canceled, their bond dissolves – until years later, when one of the teens sweeps back into the other's life, bearing secret knowledge that could change everything.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
We're excited to have return guest Jane Schoenbrun with a powerhouse film that they wrote and directed, I Saw The TV Glow. The film is set in the '90s and follows Owen, an awkward teenager whose classmate introduces him to a mysterious late-night tv show, and his new obsession begins to cause cracks in his sense of reality. Jane describes their "egg crack moment", and how important it was to cast queer actors (led by the wonderful duo of Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine) that we normally don't see in teenage angst films. And then we discuss the '90s nostalgia and gorgeous cinematography that this film serves, our mutual obsession with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the incredible soundtrack that'll leave you wondering if Jane is also a part-time DJ. Jane is a unique and important voice in the entertainment industry, and we are fucken' here for it.For I Saw The TV Glow screening times, click hereFollow director/writer Jane Schoenbrun on IGSupport the Show. Thanks for listening and for your support!
