On this episode of Upon Further Review, we begin by discussing the Edmonton oilers' recent tear, and whether they are Stanley Cup contenders (0:23). On a similar theme, we discuss the NHL's current contenders and pretenders (14:25). We then move to Pittsburgh to discuss the continued mediocrity of the Penguins and whether we believe they can turn it around (21:22). After this, we move to our interview with Anthony Petrielli of the Maple Leafs Hotstove to discuss the Leafs' recent play and future possible trades and direction (32:00). Returning back to our discussion, we analyse Ovechkin's slow start to the year and whether he can break Gretzky's record (1:05:10), as well as news in the Central Division with the St. Louis Blues firing Craig Berube and the Winnipeg Jets' playoff chances now that Kyle Connor went down with an injury (1:10:50). We end off the episode by talking about fighting after clean hits, the new additions to the NHL Skills Competition, and whether the NHL should follow the NBA's suit and implement both an In-Season Tournament and Play-In Tournament (1:27:30).
We have our third coaching change of the year as the St. Louis Blues have moved on from the Head Coach that led them to their first ever Stanley Cup in 2019. Craig Berube is out behind the bench, even though the team is just a few points out of a playoff spot.Jason and Frank started off the podcast by breaking down why the move was made and debated whether or not this Blues team is good enough to get into the playoffs. That also led into a bigger conversation about whether or not this team is on the path to becoming a Cup contender or if a bigger rebuild is needed. From there, they got into the big changes coming to the NHL Skills Competition. There will be a cool $1 million up for grabs and only 12 players will compete in the competition. Will this make the skills competition actually watchable? The guys debated it.After a long conversation about local cuisine, they brought in Tyler Yaremchuk for a new edition of Fill in the Blank, delivered by DoorDash. He asked the guys about the Pittsburgh Penguins, whether or not we'll see another coaching change this season and a fun question about Connor Bedard. They wrapped up the show by talking about Mikko Rantanen's post-game comments and the New York Islanders hot streak.1:00 - Blues fire Berube12:55 - Changes to the skills comp25:30 - Fill in the Blank32:33 - Rantanen Speaks Up35:40 - Islanders heaterWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Instigator Podcast luck has struck again, with the Sabres swinging a deal less than a day after we recorded last week. We talk about Eric Robinson's arrival and some of the challenges the Sabres will face in balancing their roster once they return to health. We also touch on some stories from around the NHL as news broke on the upcoming changes to the NHL Skills Competition in addition to a big story out of Washington DC. The Skills Competition updates are promising as the focus on in-game skill seems to be the crux of the changes. Meanwhile the Capitals appear poised to be taking a big step towards building a new area in Alexandria, Virginia and moving from their home at Capital One Arena. Tried to get @mostcallmeo take on #kyrieirving demanding trade SIX days before #nbatrade deadline. #magic wants him in LA. @lan.aponte agreed with me, good riddance. The question is what does #kevindurant think of all this? He's just started a four year contract with @brooklynnets a team that loves drama. #nbaallstar reserves announced. I love what #anthonyedwards said after snub. More concerned about getting @timberwolves into #nbaplayoffs this season. Amazing the amount of games the players have missed this year. Sorry #jamesharden but you've only played 34 of 50 games. That's not an #allstar in my opinion. #goheels #beatdook tomorrow. Watched #nfl #probowlgames #dodgeball was awesome. But #golf dumb. Throwing water balloons seriously? I'm already getting bummed out that #sblvii last game of season. #nhlskillscompetition tonight. @nascar #clashatthecoliseum Sunday worth a look.
