Adam Long, Reed Martin, and Austin Tichenor – the cast of the film version of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) – reminisce about the 2000 filming of the RSC's signature work, and discuss the extraordinary lengths the production went to ensure they were jet-lagged for the entire process. Revelations include the secret cameo from co-author and RSC founding member Daniel Singer; how different actors must play jokes differently; the Spinal Tap observation that relative size is the difference between funny and scary; how to make friends in British and Irish pubs; and how the RSC vibe might best be described as squabbling siblings bound together in a brotherhood of Shakespeare. After Hemingway's first wife, Hadley, became aware of his extramarital affair with Pauline Pfeiffer, she became resigned to the end of their marriage. Before she agreed to the divorce, however, she issued an extraordinary provision to Hemingway and Pauline: that they spend one hundred days apart! If they still wanted to stay together after those hundred days, Hadley would consent to the divorce. To explore this bizarre episode in Hemingway's life, we welcome Gioia Diliberto, biographer of Hadley Richardson, and Adam Long, director of the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum, the family home of Pauline Pfeiffer. Diliberto and Long each share details about all the members of this messy love triangle and how it forms the legacy of the phase of Hemingway's life that would inspire A Moveable Feast. We discuss who these people were in 1926 and what they wanted, what motivated this 100-Day Challenge, all of its implications, and its outcome.

It's the Podcast's 18th birthday! Austin Tichenor, Reed Martin, and Adam Long celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Ring Reduced, the RSC's 1994 film for Britain's Channel 4 which compressed Wagner's epic opera Der Ring des Nibelungen into a brief and palatable 24 minutes. Adam, Austin, and Reed share their favorite fun facts about Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung; reveal their inspiration from Anna Russell; speculate on comic directions not taken; confirm that the Reduced Shakespeare Company is completely and utterly responsible for the success of Ted Lasso; disclose how they created the most expensive and complicated gag of the entire shoot; and marvel how for one brief shining moment, they were the Rhinemaidens of all media. They keep writing American history so we have to keep reducing it! Playwrights Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor discuss how they've updated The Complete History of America (abridged), which they wrote with Adam Long back in 1993. Reed and Austin share how Dee Ryan's recent one-hour production of the script was so helpful; how Reed discovered who the most pivotal figure in American history has been for the last 30 years; the challenges of keeping up just the last two weeks of American history; how the "Special Election Edition" that the RSC performs differs from the published version of the script; why Reed's heavy teaching schedule prevents him from joining us on the road; and how adjunct professors are doing the Lord's work (without the benefits). An emotional return in Bermuda, an African Safari, the LPGA's rising star Gabi Ruffels, and NYC rapper, screenwriter, actor, and artist Nik Moody on this week's podcast. It's officially the holiday season, and host Alex Lauzon is ready for it, as is cohost Michael Russell, begrudgingly (2:10). At the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, Adam Long ended his fairways hit streak at a childish number, and Camilo Villegas returns to the winners circle after an emotional few years (3:36). The LPGA had its inaugural Anika Driven event, hosted by the legend Anika herself. With some virtual credentials, Alex was able to chat with up-and-coming LPGA pro Gabi Ruffels, who had an impressive week in Florida (7:18). Past Masters Champion Angel Cabrera is out of prison, and is eyeing a return to golf and even the PGA TOUR, which seems surprising (18:10). The DP World Tour was in South Africa, and after enjoying the African safari, Max Homa played his way to his first international victory (21:15). Over on our YouTube channel you can see some behind the scenes from the Desire Cup, held at the beautiful TPC Sawgrass, as well as a very important mini-golf challenge between Alex and Michael (23:27). The PGA TOUR ends its 2023 calendar with the RSM Classic at Sea Island, featuring a very boring field (25:06). Nik Moody is a rapper, screenwriter, actor, artist, and now a returning guest to the podcast. Nik chats with Alex about his new movie, his new music, and his new partner (26:30). Alex has two winning weeks for his picks in the college football world, and makes a bold prediction for the CFB Playoffs (50:08). The race to the bottom continues for Michael's Giants and Alex's Patriots in the NFL, as these teams continue to lose at embarrassing levels (51:46). As we #AwaysEndWithFood, it's all about Thanksgiving, from the turkey to the sides to when you need to be taking that bird out of your freezer (hint: a lot sooner than you think) (55:54). We near the end of Marrr-ch, a month named for what else but pirate films, with a film that wrestles with a very different kind of pirate along with not even hanging "pirate" in its original British title: Pirate Radio (The Boat that Rocked). Movie Geeks United's Adam Long programs the episode and stops by to talk about indie comedies of the late 2000s and whether this film's use of music matches the subject material. Starring a whole raft of then-up-and-coming British comedians, it follows the exploits of Radio Rock, a pirate radio station situated on a boat in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The boat broadcasts music 24 hours a day, which at the time wasn't the norm in the UK, and begins to draw the attention of stodgy government-types hellbent on stopping the party. It's a fun little romp that overstays its welcome by about twenty minutes. For more episodes of the Kulturecast along with many more podcasts that are guaranteed to be your new favorite audio obsession, check out Weirding Way Media at weirdingwaymedia.com.
