Kate Woodsome is the founder of The Invisible Threads Project, which studies the relationship between mental health and democracy. We talked about the recent election of Trump and the support for that process from the Heritage Foundation, Opus Dei implications, and Project 2025. She was part of The Washington Post team who won a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in coverage of the January 6th Capitol attack. Woodsome left The Washington Post in 2023, stating in her biography that she could no longer normalize the trauma, burnout, and moral injury pervasive in the industry. She noted in our discussion that her childhood contained abuse and trauma that the Capitol attack would reawaken. Once able to rely on being a workaholic who pushed through, she decided to take a step back and focus on healing and the rediscovery of self-identity and self-worth. This eventually allowed her to return to focus on social movements. She covered The People's March on January 18th, 2025, and then went on to speak with Trump supporters outside of the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., following his inauguration. “What I'm really trying to focus on is civil discourse and looking at the underlying roots of our problems, as opposed to their ugly symptoms,” said Woodsome. We discussed looking for opportunities with family and friends to find common ground and common beliefs. We also discussed empowering people to think for themselves. Not everyone is as radicalized, and fringe members may not fully understand the beliefs and practices of the core community. The opening weeks of the Trump presidency have featured a flurry of Executive Orders aimed not only to reverse the policies and priorities of the Biden Administration but also to advance the Trump administration's vision of the good. Indeed, on the day of President Trump's inauguration he placed himself in the middle of the Capital One Arena indowntown DC before a giant rally of his supporters to begin signing these Executive Orders (or EOs). This relatively unprecedented practice of drawing attention to the signing of EOs speaks to how significant they are at altering the political and legal terrain. Some of the most impactful of these EOs concern matters touching on human sexuality and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. We'll discuss those EOs with attorney Mary Rice Hasson. She is the Kate O'Beirne Senior Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C., where she co-founded and directs the Person and Identity Project, aninitiative that equips parents and faith-based institutions to promote the truth about the human person and counter gender ideology. An attorney and policy expert, Mary has been a keynote speaker for the Holy See during theUnited Nations Commission on the Status of Women, addressing education, women and work, caregiving, and gender ideology, and serves as a consultant to theU.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family, Life and Youth. The co-author of several books on education, Mary's writinghas appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, National Review, First Things, the National Catholic Register and OurSunday Visitor, among others.A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Notre DameLaw School, Mary is married to Seamus Hasson, and they are parents of seven grown children and grandparents of seven.Much of our discussion springs from this article she co-authored inFirst Things.

Crowds of Trump supporters in Washington were supposed to watch the inauguration on the National Mall. But when plans changed last-minute because of freezing temperatures, the president's fans crowded instead into indoor space at Capital One Arena and nearby bars. At the same time, Trump was getting sworn in at the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, flanked by tech billionaires and members of his proposed Cabinet. On today's episode, host Martine Powers talks with chief correspondent Dan Balz about the unusual inauguration, Trump's plans for his presidency and what he's already doing to make them a reality.Today's show was produced by Laura Benshoff and Ted Muldoon, who also mixed the show. It was edited by Reena Flores. Joy Reid leads this coverage of the inauguration of Donald Trump, as Trump signs a series of executive orders at the Capital One Arena in Washington, and pardons January 6 defendants. This moment marked yet another significant development in his political journey, leaving many to debate whether it represents a new beginning or the beginning of the end. Earlier in the day, Trump made his entrance in a highly anticipated and historic event that reflected the uniqueness of this political era. Unlike previous presidential inaugurations, today's ceremony was held indoors due to chilly weather, a decision that some compared to similar conditions during President Obama's first inauguration in 2009. However, speculation suggests the move indoors may have stemmed from other concerns beyond the weather. Regardless of interpretation, today stands as a pivotal moment in American political history. President Donald Trump is back in office after his inauguration, one that was marked by an "America First" theme. The President signaled that his second term will be focused on increasing energy production, securing the border, and growing the economy. The President spent the rest of the day attending celebratory events and signing executive actions in front of a crowd at Capital One Arena. FOX News Radio Political Analyst Josh Kraushaar joins the Rundown to discuss the tone of the President's inaugural speech, how Congress moves forward with a slim Republican majority, and what the first 100 days of the Trump presidency will look like. In his final moments before leaving office, then-President Biden issued a handful of last-minute pardons. Those pardoned include his siblings and their spouses, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and former Joint Chiefs of Staff and retired General Mark Milley. Biden asserts that accepting his pardon is not the same as an admission of guilt. Former lawyer for President Donald Trump and former federal prosecutor Jim Trusty joins to explain how preemptive pardons work and what precedent this sets. Plus, commentary from FOX News contributor Joe Concha. Photo Credit: AP Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. Magid reviews the leadup to President Donald Trump's inauguration into office as the 47th president of the United States, including the President-elect's role in the Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal that began with the release of three female hostages on Sunday. Magid points out that reaching the second phase of the deal may be more difficult, given the pressures on Netanyahu's coalition government, and the prime minister's desire to remain fighting Hamas in Gaza. Magid also looks at Trump and Netanyahu's various supporters, and who has sway over the two leaders in their decision-making process. Magid discusses Trump's comments during the inauguration rally, as he invited hostage families and former hostage Noa Argamani on stage, but made a point about releasing the January 6, 2021 "hostages," not referring to the hostages taken by Hamas to Gaza. After the inauguration and rally, says Magid, Trump signed a number of orders, including undoing the Biden sanctions against violent Israeli settlers, revoking the Biden order that removed Trump's 2020 sanctions on the International Criminal Court and ordering a 90-day pause in foreign development assistance. Finally, Magid discusses Trump's casual comment regarding the Gaza ceasefire and that it may not hold, remarking that the war in Gaza is "their war, not our war," perhaps as a way for Trump to distance himself from the region and situation.
