Today, we are joined by Dr. Robin DiAngelo, an Affiliate Associate Professor of Education at the University of Washington, who has numerous publications and books to her name, all centered around social and racial justice. By coining the term “white fragility” in an academic article in 2011, she has widely influenced the global dialogue on race. Her book, White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism, debuted on the New York Times bestseller list and remained there for three years! Our conversation today focuses on the themes she presents in her most recent book, Nice Racism: How Progressive White People Perpetuate Racial Harm. We are aware of the impact racism can have on black, Indigenous, and other racialized people. We condemn white supremacy and hate crimes. But what if the most harm to people of colour is caused by white 'progressives'? What if they are the problem, but they are in denial?

“This is a terrifying moment in our country – it's literally illegal to teach that racism exists. But most white people live segregated lives. And I think the most powerful message of white supremacy is that I could live, love, work, play, die in racial segregation with no sense whatsoever that anything of value has been lost.” There's been a lot of discussion recently about white fragility, critical race theory (CRT), systemic racism, and more – but what does any of this actually mean? And how can we talk about these things in ways that don't further backlash against progress, or leave white folks feeling an unhelpful amount of guilt? How did we go from the racial awakening of 2020 to the anti-CRT backlash of 2022?Van Jones sits down with Dr. Robin DiAngelo, bestselling author of White Fragility and Nice Racism, to discuss the history of racism in America, how we got to where we are today, and how we can approach these difficult but necessary conversations – so we can forge a better future. New episodes of Uncommon Ground with Van Jones release weekly, every Wednesday.Have a story about bringing up issues of race with others, or something you've done to reach out to someone who sees things differently than you do? Chaired by Paul Barclay. The title of Robin DiAngelo's last international bestseller entered the lexicon: White Fragility, describing the defensive response from White people when called out for things they have said or done that have caused unintended racial hurt or offence. In Nice Racism, Robin draws on her background as a sociologist and an educator to explain how well-intentioned White progressives can cause racial harm, whether by romanticising People of Colour or expecting them to educate. An important if uncomfortable discussion on how to be a true ally.
Join Dean Elizabeth Kronk Warner for this book review and discussion with Dean Martell Teasley, College of Social Work. The book they will be reviewing is, Nice Racism: How progressive white people perpetuate racial harm by Dr. Robin DiAngelo for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This New York Times bestseller explores how a culture of niceness inadvertently promotes racism. In DiAngelo's book, White Fragility, she explained how racism is a system into which all white people are socialized and challenged the belief that racism is a simple matter of good people versus bad. DiAngelo also made a provocative claim: white progressives cause the most daily harm to people of color. In Nice Racism, her follow-up work, she explains how they do so. Drawing on her background as a sociologist and over 25 years working as an anti-racist educator, she picks up where White Fragility left off and moves the conversation forward. Writing directly to white people as a white person, DiAngelo identifies many common white racial patterns and breaks down how well-intentioned white people unknowingly perpetuate racial harm. These patterns include: rushing to prove that we are “not racist” downplaying white advantage romanticizing Black, Indigenous, and other peoples of color (BIPOC) pretending white segregation “just happens” expecting BIPOC people to teach us about racism carefulness and feeling immobilized by shame DiAngelo explains how spiritual white progressives seeking community by co-opting Indigenous and other groups' rituals create separation, not connection. She challenges the ideology of individualism and explains why it is OK to generalize about white people, and she demonstrates how white people who experience other oppressions still benefit from systemic racism. Writing candidly about her own missteps and struggles, she models a path forward, encouraging white readers to continually face their complicity and embrace courage, lifelong commitment, and accountability. Nice Racism is an essential work for any white person who recognizes the existence of systemic racism and white supremacy and wants to take steps to align their values with their actual practice. BIPOC readers may also find the “insiders” perspective useful for navigating whiteness. A digital copy of this book is available at the library for University of Utah students, faculty and staff. PANELISTS: Dean Elizabeth Kronk Warner, Jefferson B. & Rita E. Fordham Presidential Dean and Professor of Law, The University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law Dean Martell L. Robin DiAngelo is a lecturer on issues of racial and social justice and the bestselling author of White Fragility. In her most recent book, Nice Racism, she explores why well-meaning White progressives perceive themselves as being past racism—and why this has devastating consequences. In today's episode with Erica Chidi, the pair share strong and soft tools for engaging in difficult, beautiful, and potentially life-changing conversations like this one. Subscribe at http://usefulidiots.substack.com Matt lost his voice this week, so we're unpaywalling this extended interview with Adolph Reed. We'll be back next week with Monday Mourning and a new UI episode. Subscribers can still get their UI fix with Katie's attempt at the Taibbi dating app, also out today. “But if that doesn't happen, then that's gonna be the end of American democracy in the next year.” Does he mean Republicans taking the senate? The creation of a new religion of Wokery in deference to Robin DiAngelo? Duke winning March Madness in 2022? You'll have to watch to find out. Professor Reed has big statements and important messages for you in this informative and irreverent extended interview. He shares with Matt and Katie his perspective on the changing progression of civil-rights activism from policy-oriented protest to squabbling over abstract moral superiority. The pre-eminent scholar on this new ideology of course being Robin DiAngelo and her new book Nice Racism, which Professor Reed awards Matt the purple heart for finishing. It's in this “book” (apologies to Norm Finkelstein for using the term) that DiAngelo calls for such BIPOC-infantilizing ideas as moral reparations, seeing white people collectively while seeing BIPOC as individuals. And this new teaching is quickly becoming the dominant theology. This, according to Professor Reed, is dangerous. “What we need,” he argues, “is having frank conversations with actual people in society, not mediated through mass media, about the problems and policies in their lives that confront them.” And he's planning to do just that. In a Useful Idiots Breaking News Alert, Reed announced his upcoming podcast Class Matters, in which he and other scholars will discuss what society would look like if it were governed by and for the concerns of the working class. Listen to the interview now. Learn something, laugh, but please, whatever you do, stop telling Adolph Reed he doesn't understand the depths and intensity of racism in America. Because we're pretty sure he does. Plus, Matt and Katie break their silence on the Aaron Maté vs The Young Turks feud, and yes, they have some demands. Learn more about your ad choices. As PC culture, led fearlessly by Miss Woke 2021 Robin DiAngelo, moves deeper into decreeing what terms and actions count as racist, Professor Adolph Reed has a warning for us: “Both the discursive and institutional have emerged around a systemic disposition to find ways to evade talking about class and economic inequality, then it just grows in that dark environment with other fungi and so forth and so on.” That's “historian of ideologies” talk for a simple yet important concept which he explains further: When we focus too much on the struggle against racism and prejudice, what recedes from view is the struggle against specific policies that cause essential problems of economic inequality. In his return to Useful Idiots, Professor Reed judges excerpts from DiAngelo's new book Nice Racism, shares stories of civil rights history, and does something basic yet suddenly important in a time when both racism and faux-anti-racism seem to be growing: he simply defines racism. It's an important episode which also turns out to be one of the funniest ones yet. Here's what else you'll get: –Katie Halper's NBA Finals Predictions –Poor Saudi Arabia tries to defend itself against Yemeni children –Biden and Republicans finally find a chastity belt for their mouths –And of course, it sucks to Zuck It's all this, and more, on this week's episode of Useful Idiots. I am so excited to welcome Dr Robin DiAngelo on the show on Monday at 12 noon EST. You may recognize her from her seminal book, “White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism,” originally published in June of 2018, but came into spotlight last year with the death of George Floyd. Now, she’s ready to publish her follow up book, “Nice Racism: How Progressive White People Perpetuate Racial Harm” (June, 2021) and with the trial of Derek Chauvin going on as we speak, our conversation takes on even more significance. A lot has happened over the past few months while we were on break, and we are back to talk about all of it. First of all, we have our first black female VP of the United States, Kamala Harris! Let that beautiful truth sink in. Our Capitol was overrun by a mob of angry, predominantly white Trump supporters in January and we talk about how differently those terrorists were treated compared to Black Lives Matter protesters. We discuss how COVID-19 continues to impact communities of color disproportionately and how the life expectancy for black Americans has consequently dropped 2.5 years compared to just one year for white Americans. In the wake of the recent Bachelor racism controversy, our man Emmanuel Acho, and the inspiration behind the podcast, was made the interim host of the show (please be a guest on our podcast, Emmanuel!). And we take on cancel culture around Aunt Jemima and Dr Seuss, addressing when, if ever, it's appropriate to erase history. And rounding it all out, Essence gives her perspective on white people profiting off of teaching other white people how to be antiracist in the wake of Robin DiAngelo publishing her new book Nice Racism. It's an extra long episode because there's so much to unpack!
In this episode, I give my candid critique of Dr. Robin DiAngelo, the well-known author of "White Fragility." Robin has debuted her newest book, "Nice Racism" which has re-centered her inside the race discourse. Americans continue to debate whether her philosophies are helpful or harmful for American race relations at large. I have A LOT of thoughts on her ideas, which I breakdown in this video. Listen to hear them. And remember, think for yourself.
