Imagine stepping into a warm bath or hot tub. The thought alone invites greater ease and relaxation. As you give yourself permission to relax and attune to the inner landscape of your being, stuck energy can soften. Through the power of loving attention and curiosity, that energy can then dissolve, and you are more able to be your authentic self in the world, liberated from old patterns that no longer define you. Step into a journey that spans basalt canyons, coastal waters and city streets—where listening becomes not just a practice but a way of belonging. In this episode of Power of Place, we walk alongside Father Pat Twohy, a Jesuit priest and poet whose five decades of ministry with Native communities across the Pacific Northwest have shaped a unique place-rooted path of service. We travel with him from Spokane to Nespelem where he's welcomed through wakes, family meals and slow-built trust. We join him at Swinomish and on the Salish Sea, celebrating ancestral canoe journeys and welcoming the first salmon. In Seattle he walks with the urban Native community at Chief Seattle Club and helps establish the Indigenous Peoples Institute at Seattle University. Along the way we hear the archival voice of his teacher, Lushootseed language keeper Vi Hilbert, alongside contemporary reflections from elders and leaders including Shelly Vendiola (Swinomish), Teri Gobin (Tulalip) and Darrell Hillaire (Lummi). This is not a story of conversion but of transformation: through ceremony, companionship and the sacred act of listening. And as we listen we're offered the same invitation—to learn from Native people, to be shaped by their wisdom and—like Father Pat—to walk away changed. “You have an ability to osmosis, I think. And I sort of inhale it. It sort of becomes part of me. Soaking it in without having to say anything or not performing anything. Just taking it in; receiving as much as I can possibly receive. And they knew that about me. And eventually, they spoon-feed me, a little bit at a time.” ~Father Patrick Twohy, S.J.
In this episode of the Riff Session, we engage in a light-hearted conversation that spans various topics, including our upcoming trip to Madagascar, cultural exchanges during mission trips, and humorous discussions about classic monsters like vampires and werewolves. We also touch on survival strategies in a zombie apocalypse and share our experiences with extreme weather and ice fishing. In this engaging conversation, we explore various themes ranging from seasonal activities and childhood memories to the humorous aspects of pain and the science of humor measurement. We share personal anecdotes about winter activities, school seasons, and encounters with fire ants, leading to a discussion on the Schmidt Pain Index and the nature of humor in everyday life. The conversation culminates in a humorous critique of advertising, particularly focusing on Palmolive commercials and the absurdity of using dishwashing liquid for hand care.

If the barrage of MAGA nuttiness and raw meanness is getting you down, ponder this passage from the classic novel, Don Quixote: “It is not possible for the bad or the good to last forever… and since the bad has lasted so long, the good is close at hand.”Of course, the good only comes when fed-up people openly rebel against the bad. And, sure enough, Trump's awful tyranny is revving up a majority movement for the common good.Soaking in self-delusion, tyrants start sipping their own bathwater, thinking it's champagne. So, today's Washington MAGA moguls, drunk on narcissism, are imperiously rigging the rules so their clique can grab more wealth and power from the rest of us. Maybe they thought we commoners wouldn't notice… or care. But we did and do, so the rebellion is on and gaining steam with nationwide protests and a surge in grassroots populist defiance.Predictably, Trump & Co. is now resorting to the same losing tactic that panicky despots always fall back on – deploying police and military to subjugate the people. He has commanded the Army and Marines to shut down public protests. Then, posturing as a “strongman,” this 1960s draft dodger spent 45 million of our tax dollars to stage a made-for-TV, Stalin-style military parade on his birthday, letting him strut around as warrior-in-chief.These are not shows of strength, but pathetic confessions of personal insecurity and presidential weakness. Sad. Don Quixote was right – the good is close at hand. So, to all of you in the growing democracy movement, keep pushing, push harder, push further! Thanks to you, we're getting there. Vaisesika Dasa discusses the importance of hearing and serving pure devotees as outlined in Srimad Bhagavatam 1.2.16. He explained that devotees, free from vice, are bridges to higher spiritual realms. The conversation emphasized the significance of Vaishnava association, or sadhu sanga, for spiritual advancement. Vaisesika Dasa highlighted the stages of devotional service, from shraddha (faith) to bhava (prema), and the role of devotees in transforming asuras (non-devotees) through their association. Practical tips for managing friendships and developing a taste for reading Srimad Bhagavatam were also provided.
If you want glowing, youthful skin, you must work from the inside out. Discover one of the best anti-aging foods for your skin to add to your diet today! 0:00 Introduction: How to look younger 1:46 The best anti-aging food4:27 Collagen and anti-aging4:52 The best anti-aging diet Is your beauty routine actually aging you? The creams and lotions you think are helping your skin could have plastics, toxic chemicals, and hidden carcinogens. Even the products containing collagen will not be absorbed topically through the skin.Over-cleansing and excess scrubbing destroy your skin's microbiome. Tap water contains fluoride and chlorine, which are toxic and damaging to the skin. A filter for your shower can help.Statins can also destroy youthful skin. They block cholesterol, which is essential for skin health and integrity. The FDA does not do third-party testing on the chemicals in your anti-aging products. The EU has banned 1600 cosmetic ingredients, while the US has only banned 30. The best anti-aging food is high in retinol, an essential building block for connective tissue and vital for the skin's immune function. This anti-aging food contains copper and zinc, which support skin elasticity and healing. It's loaded with iron, and a single serving has more anti-wrinkle and anti-aging benefits than many expensive creams. If you haven't guessed, grass-fed liver is the #1 anti-aging superfood! Grass-fed liver contains every cofactor and nutrient necessary for healthy, youthful skin. Some people don't enjoy eating liver, and if you have preexisting liver damage, you may feel tired after eating it. If this happens, try taking one beef liver capsule before bed. Soaking liver in lemon juice can improve its taste. Many good recipes also make it more palatable. Liver pâté, grass-fed liver pills, and blending liver with ground beef can also help mask the flavor. If you consume collagen, you need many cofactors to penetrate the skin. Liver provides all of them!Ultraprocessed foods will make you look older! Low-fat diets can also have an aging effect on the skin. Low-fat protein and poor quality protein will help you lose weight, but won't help you look younger. Did you know that the neural pathways for relationship are developed in the first three years of a person's life? This is the heart of what's called attachment theory and affects our relationship with ourselves, others, and even our relationships with God. I'm so honored to welcome today's guest, Summer Joy Gross. Summer is a spiritual director, Anglican priest, and writer who weaves neuroscience, attachment theory, and spiritual practices to help us root ourselves in God's presence and nearness. In this conversation, Summer walks us through each of the 4 attachment styles, showing us how our earliest experiences of love shape the way that we've come to experience God. We talk about the attachment wounds of each style, and how the Spirit actively pursues our healing in these places. Summer also guides us through a beautiful attachment practice in real-time to help to reconnect to God in a more secure way. It was surreal, I was off the grid and in airplane mode, and completely lost without giving a care I was so frustrated that I just kept waking. Just when I started to seriously consider suicide, with the exact timing of my thoughts reaching the logistical point that ‘there was really nothing let in the world for me'— then it appeared right before my eyes; as if it had just sprung up in my path. I wasn't worried that I was lost, or even panicking in a suicidal spiral, I just thought to myself “It's really time to go.” Then, the radio tower, which looked something like a sigil that had been appearing to me over and over. It made no other kind of sense; my phone wasn't connected to the internet, nor was maps installed; my location was off and in lockdown mode, and I knew I had missed the turn for Whole Foods… and just kept walking. In airplane mode, listening to heavy rock, wondering why I should even try at anything at all when Suddenly i realized It was a radio station. I didn't know what kind of music, but it didn't matter— I had music in all the genres. And though it was with intense irony that I had pretty much entirely given up on DJing, especially for the moment— here was this, something I just stumbled upon after walking what seemed pretty aimlessly into an almost suicidal frame of mind— not unheard of. My apartment was a hellscape and walking around Brooklyn was not much difference, besides that I was in the noise rather than on top of it. Either way, it was so exact I couldn't tell whether it happened before or at the same time, almost as if the universe's response to my logical needing to just kill muself off before it could get any worse was this thing I had very recently, pretty much entirely meaningfully abandoned. Trying to be a DJ. Was I trying? I didn't know. But either way, I had music out and business cards in my pocket, and so here it just must have been where I was walking to, anyway. At least I got rid of the trackers by confusing them— and myself— by completing a large circle in the opposite direction of the way I was sure I was supposed to be going. I'm hungry And I'm lonely And nobody loves me anyway I never feel at home And look Nobody wants me anyway My body is a rotting truck Nobody wants me anyway I might as well have been a corpse Nobody wants me anyway lol Didn't it have like ham, And— — both these cheeses. Cojita and queso blanco. With like— Pinapple, I think— And like, a kosher dill pickle. Hence the Dill. I guess. It was a really good sandwhich. Yeah. Oh well. When the friend in your head ends, And just drops dead, so you run in With the old hog for a laugh and a couple of Drops of syrup Water fountain Now I'm hungry It's been years But who the fuck is counting. We all made bad decisions and choices Mine was to jump first, Yours comes with comfort, a petite stature And a long slovic look with an axe tongue And a language no one on earth speaks But those who had what most or none do And you wonder why I close my eyes and suffer harder in oceans of blondes Far off looks of lost souls Eyes of oceans And no monuments without our fortunes Wrong, bud. I put it on a kings Hawaiian roll One for ever one I've suffered We have the same deck of cards, Only mine can talk, son Look, I wrote you an open socket Conform to nothing Nobody loves me, anyway cause I get hungry Go be a husband, dope boy Go be a Carhart, countryman Go be a store bought doughboy That ought to solve it Dropped you on Stop that Round the corner 9 holes of golf left I told you who won that Round one What a way to die What a way to live What a way to love King James! What away to lose. What away to tie. What a way to die. What a way to lie! King James! I've got bibles for miles And eyes on my articles, Isis on cycles And Christs in criseses I put a thorn on your mailbox Will you promise to prick it? The finger I picked it! The truth was involved And in blood it was written The ritual sense, Pretenses Pretend this didn't happen “I didn't” I swore throat on your mailbox I promise I nailed the mailman and ten blondes Just not to fawn at the thought of ya Fawn at the thought of you But oh am I woke on my tired Regardless I simple don't write in code —till I'm inspired. Woah! What a lovely scroll you wrote! King James! What the fuck made me write that? Scallions! There's a million ways to die And oh, The toll of having Wolverine Wrapped around your finger Aspartame Had better bitter sanctions From the tales of old Histophcles And obstacles The Oxford girls? More tour bus stories, Blonde hair Broke Bloke, Tits and tits and Have you written any sentiments About your post mortem. Of course. I even put my will in order It's obvious they want me dead And rather than a lover There simply is no love left! String her up and cut the torso, Let the blood fall And the organs, And the morbid flesh rot, Soaking all of her horror stories Of love and unrequited hypocrisy! There, there, settle down. You haven't one yet I still have an ounce of coke in my pocket Coke in my pocket And I can't pronounce the name of my next guest, The show I'm hosting— I might as well just sound it ouhhuuuut— Cold . Okay, then. I can have a pilot in a month with just the look of him Without it on a tub of Petroleum jelly or whatever jew bargain I cried so much I really liked the taste of reddi whip You know I guess I just Wasn't ready for it Will and Grady, Grace and Katie Now were all watching Cause they're younger While we're steady greying Who are her?! I'll hire her. Not so fast, A laundry list of thoughts And plummeting stock options I still love all my loved men But nobody loves me So unrequited is the prerequisite for this poet And so I chose to split open With my guts, hunting forward into the cut Knowing, my purple entrails will impale you And the words I have laid here I didn't fit the herd mentality And still was lead to slaughter Haha, Charade you are, sir. I know my love when I'm shadow bonded. Not now, Matthew, James and I are talking, Dear brethren As brother And mother and son And as whore and horror show. Tell me something, sparrow Did I throw you off your steep cut oats It's heavy on the tongue With whispers that I love you Mother son and brother Just around the corner Bear around the bush again Just to jack it off, or up The spare tire's on a doughnut How god loving I want the world, my whole throat Throbbing at the thought of concepts Lover, lover, lover— magnet, skip a turn And call his mother No one's going home alive Or any other way, So I just call the others, Others Fathers, Sons, And brothers Ties And bonds— A uniformed comfort. This week, we are following up on our last discussion about sourcing the right hay for your horse by focusing on the practice of soaking hay. Soaking hay is a common strategy for reducing sugar levels for sugar-sensitive horses. This practice is helpful for horses with insulin resistance, acute laminitis, or high-insulin PSSM. Join us to learn how to soak hay to improve your horse's health and ensure longevity while avoiding the associated risks. When and Why to Soak HaySoaking hay can be helpful, but it should only be done when necessary, in cases of acute laminitis, severe insulin resistance, or PSSM, where high sugar levels in hay contribute to the problem. Soaking is not something you want to rely on long-term or use just in case. You must always consider whether it is doing more good than harm and use it as a short-term tool when you do not have a better option.Keep It TemporaryIf you need to soak hay, do it for a limited time, perhaps two weeks. If sugar is the issue, you will typically see changes in your horse within 24 to 48 hours. If nothing improves after soaking the hay for several weeks, the problem may not be sugar-related. If you continue to soak at that point, it could deplete essential nutrients.Be Aware of Nutrient LossRemember that soaking does not only remove sugars. It also pulls out vital minerals and amino acids. Since hay is less nutritious than fresh forage, soaking can make it even more deficient. For horses with metabolic conditions, PPID, or PSSM, the loss of nutrition could cause a slow and steady decline in their overall health. Think Beyond SugarSugar is only part of the story. Inflammation, poor hoof balance, and limited movement can also drive high insulin and hoof pain. If insulin remains elevated and symptoms persist, chronic inflammation could be the cause, not sugar. Always step back and assess the whole horse.Use Soaking StrategicallyLimiting your hay soaking to 15–20 minutes is usually enough to reduce sugar without removing too many essential nutrients. Soaking is ineffective for lowering protein and should not be used to manage dust- a quick spray with water works better. Avoid long-term soaking, as it can do more harm than good by further depleting an already nutrient-poor feed.Have a PlanIf you are soaking hay, take the opportunity to put a longer-term plan in place to support the metabolic health of your horse. It might involve switching to hay with a lower sugar content, adding essential nutrients, reviewing your trim schedule, and encouraging more movement. The goal is to rebuild resilience rather than relying on an ongoing restriction.Links and resources:Connect with Elisha Edwards on her website Join my email list to be notified about new podcast releases and upcoming webinars.Free Webinar Masterclass: Four Steps to Solving Equine Metabolic Syndrome NaturallyRegister for my self-paced course, Resolving Equine Metabolic Syndrome Naturally.Mentioned in this episode:Learn the 4 Steps to Resolving Metabolic Syndrome NaturallySign up for the FREE masterclass today!Masterclass
“Alright, let’s talk vegetables… or technically, fruits. This is a cucumber. And it’s a lot like us — fresh, full of potential, but still kind of… plain. Nothing wrong with it, but let’s be honest — no one’s lining up for cucumber-flavored chips. On the other hand a pickle. Same vegetable — totally different vibe. Pickles have flavor. They’ve been changed. Transformed. But here's the thing: this guy didn’t get this way by trying harder. It didn’t wake up one morning and say, ‘Today’s the day! I’m going full dill!’”……..“It got this way by sitting. Soaking. Being immersed in a new environment — day after day. That’s what changed it. And honestly? That’s how spiritual growth works too.” “You don’t become more like Jesus by gritting your teeth. You become like Him by staying close — abiding. That’s what we’re diving into today.”
And imagining if the Holy Spirit was more real to me than any human person.

With the big holiday nearly here, Greg and Ed reminisce about their various Songkran experiences over the years. Ed notes that last year was a breakthrough year: he actually went out and ‘threw water' for the first time in many years and had a blast. Greg points out that it's pretty common for expats to love Songkran at first, but then quickly switch to avoiding the raucous celebrations for many years. Greg has found special Songkran celebrations specifically designed to be kid-friendly, which has allowed him to keep in touch with the experience without a lot of the craziness. Ed recounts his very first Songkran experience in Chiang Mai, a pivotal moment in his early years in Thailand as it was an amazingly good time that included three full days of brutal water wars. Ever since then he has been ‘chasing the dragon' of that first experience. Greg then uses AI to do some insightful comparisons between Songkran of 2005 and Songkran of 2025. The AI does a fairly good job of noting the transition of the holiday from being primarily local to being now well-known around the world, and one in which the prior emphasis was on traditional family ritual while today the experience is much more professionalized and commercial. Also check out the photo of a very young Greg at his first Songkran, with his friend Amanda. Oh to be young and wrinkle-free again! Regardles of how it has changed, Songkran remains a defining Thai experience not to be missed by tourists and expats. Just bring a good attitude and prepare to get soaked! In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Austen McDaniel, known on trail as PI. If that name sounds familiar, it's because we've been reading it off at the end of every episode for years, as Austen is one of our Chuck Norris Award-winning Patreon supporters. But in addition to being a longtime patron, Austen is also one hell of a backpacker, having completed the Triple Crown in three consecutive years. He approached his first thru-hike as prepared as anyone we've ever talked to, hitting the Appalachian Trail with a six-pound base weight after years of fine-tuning his setup on various shakedown hikes. He walks us through how he's managed to shave additional ounces and grams off his pack, shares some fun ultralight hacks, and offers tips for making cold soaking suck less. Of course, we also dive deep into his three thru-hikes. Beyond hiking, Austen gives us a glimpse into his life as a professional tennis instructor, if he's seducing moms at the country club, and how he managed to squeeze in some disc golf in various trail towns during his CDT trek. We wrap the show with news of an massive new FKT on New Zealand's Te Araroa, a breakdown of just how much Irish heritage runs through our DNA, including some truly deranged family tree math from Chaunce, the triple crown of food combinations, and possibly the greatest limerick in the history of the written language. Debbie McDaniel is a writer, pastor's wife, and mom. She knows something of how fear can derail a person's entire life. You see, Debbie wrestled with fear and anxiety for years. And her recovery didn't happen overnight, but she did come to think about it all in a different way. She turned to the Lord, and He showed her practical things she could do to alleviate her fear. Now, for one thing, she began to notice something. When she thought about her fear and she studied her own patterns related to being anxious, she realized that the majority of her fears didn't actually happen. And this is where a journal can come in really handy. By keeping a log of your fears, and then after a certain period of time, say a month later, check back and see how many of those fears actually manifest themselves. And you'll probably be shocked at how low the percentage really is.Next, Debbie said that she began to read words of life, as she says, “Soaking them in over and over, praying them out loud.” And she makes the great point that there's power in the Bible's words because it is God's Word. Isaiah 35:4 says, “Tell everyone who is discouraged, ‘Be strong and don't be afraid! God is coming to your rescue, coming to punish your enemies.'” Debbie also advocates what she calls guarding your heart. And this involves a daily concentrating power that reminds you of truth, even in the midst of confusion.Again, this is where reading words of life is so critical. In this way, you're making the peace in your own heart a top priority. And it's okay to say that to yourself—as many times a day as you need. With just these few things, overcoming fear is within your reach. Let's pray. Father God, how powerful your promises are to us. Your words of life bring harmony. Help us to be on the lookout for friends and family who are struggling so that we can remind them of the times you've delivered us from fear and anxiety. Help us to make guarding our own hearts a priority. In Jesus' name, amen. Change your shirt, and you can change the world!
