A good bye to one of tennis' all time greats...or is it? Plus, College Football comes out of gates blazing and the NFL is up next to start. And we're ready to discuss it all from a Sports Media perspective on the "SportsMediaWatch.com Podcast"Host T.J. Rives and Jon Lewis of Sports Media Watch return to go over the elimination of Serena Williams from the 2022 U.S. Open tourney in New York. What kind of audience increase will the final tally show for ESPN's coverage? Why is former Australian tennis great of the 1970s Margaret Court so outraged over allegedly being snubbed by Serena and is it worth continued arguing online? And, could Serena maybe play on?Next, the college football season kicked off in earnest on Labor Day weekend. What did we get out of Ohio State and Notre Dame + brand names like Alabama, Oklahoma, Michigan and USC all winning easily? Also, why did Fox Sports choose not to have afternoon college football last Saturday? Jon wonders and believes it was a mistake to not have something there for Fox's audience.Sticking with football, the NFL is big topic, including the upcoming week one slate that has the Rams hosting the Bills on NBC Thursday in the opener. T.J. and Jon discuss all the broadcasting assignments and matchups, including the Joe Buck/Troy Aikman highly anticipated debut on ESPN's Monday Night Football Monday night in Seattle. Also, Jon has concerns for the Amazon Prime preseason game audience and does it spell trouble for the league in advance of them doing regular Thursday games in the regular season? Also, T.J. pays tribute for former K.C. Chiefs QB and broadcaster Len Dawson on his passing and how Dawson and Nick Buoniconti were legendary on HBO's "Inside the NFL" back in the 1980s for all the highlights every week. Finally, there's some "Love it or Leave it?" on the WNBA Playoffs, LIV Golf sudden death playoff in Boston last weekend and more! It's all on the latest "SportsMediaWatch.com" podcast and make sure to follow/subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google, etc.!!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Remembering Nick Buoniconti, Cliff Branch, D.A. Pennebaker Nick Buoniconti was the middle linebacker for the great Miami dolphin teams of the early 1970’s, the leader of the no-name defense. His life took a turn when his son suffered a severe neck injury in a college football game, and Buoniconti became a spokesman for spinal cord injuries. Late in life he developed dementia that he believed to be football related. Cliff Branch was the sprinter turned wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders of the 1970’s and 1980’s. He is generally regarded as one of the great deep threats in the history of the game, although he is still not in the Hall of Fame. D. A. Pennebaker was the documentary filmmaker who works including a profile of a young Bob Dylan in Don’t Look Back (1967) and Monterey Pop (1968), often regarded as the best rock and roll documentary,
"One day, Nick, you will die. And, on that day, your death will breath the heart of an old woman. And that, my son, is your truest victory." Longtime listeners are well aware of "The Bit" - the delight I take in telling my mom that a celeb she's a fan of has passed on before she's heard elsewhere. Well, this week, Nick Buoniconti, of Miami Dolphins fame, has passed away. And, as I remembered from a childhood story she told me years ago, my mother knew him personally. Former NFL Head Coach Dan Reeves, who led the Atlanta Falcons to their only other Super Bowl (and the Broncos to three) takes us beyond the play-by-play. His 101 on the “silent count” – essential for the offense to communicate when the stadium noise is deafening – is a perspective changer. Plus – how to be ready for the Patriots' master of surprise – Bill Belichick. Reeves shares what he learned playing under the Cowboys' legendary Tom Landry, including what Landry noticed watching game film that others would miss. Cameos from Georgia's own Super Bowl champ Bill Curry and Nick Buoniconti
It was in 1972 when the term “the no name defense” was first seen in the NFL. That team now goes down in history and stands alone as the only undefeated team from game 1 to the Super Bowl going undefeated. Nobody seen them coming and didn’t really take them seriously. Miami's "No-Name Defense" was a nickname inspired by Dallas Cowboys head coach Tom Landry when he could not recall the names of any Dolphins defenders just before Super Bowl VI, of whom were led by future hall of fame linebacker Nick Buoniconti, Safety Jake Scott, Lloyd Mumphord, and safety Dick Anderson. Because of so many injuries that season DC Bill Arnsparger created what he called the "53" defense, in which versatile Bob Matheson who wore number 53 would be used as either a defensive end in the standard 4–3 defense or as a fourth linebacker in a 3–4 defense, with Manny Fernandez at nose tackle. After that season they had names. The young 49ers won’t go undefeated this season, but at the end of the 2016 season they will not be without an identity… Click in and, I’ll further explain.
