Editors - Joaquin Elizondo and Chris Cavanagh The GRISELDA editing team of Joaquin Elizondo and Chris Cavanagh didn't have an easy time finding work when they first made their way to Hollywood, but through a mentor/mentee relationship built on a foundation of trust, they would eventually join forces on another drug war-themed Netflix show, NARCOS: MEXICO. That NARCOS crew would go on to form the foundation of the team behind GRISELDA. GRISELDA is directed by Andrés Baiz, produced by Eric Newman and Sofía Vergara, and written by Doug Miro and Ingrid Escajeda. It stars Vergara as Griselda Blanco, a notorious Colombian drug lord. The story follows her rise in the Miami drug scene and her pursuit of power and wealth. JOAQUIN ELIZONDO Joaquin Elizondo has over 20 years of experience as an editor. He currently works in the world of scripted television shows in Hollywood. His most recent editing credits prior to Griselda include Narcos: Mexico (Netflix), The Hot Zone: Anthrax (NatGeo) and Dark Winds (AMC). Before arriving in Los Angeles, Joaquin worked in unscripted television for several years in New York City. There he edited content for HBO Sports, NBC, Telemundo, and was the lead editor on Bravo's late-night talk show Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. Joaquin majored in Film & Video Studies at the University of Michigan. He grew up in the San Diego-Tijuana border region where he began his career cutting a wide range of projects. They include news, promos, commercials, and documentaries. CHRIS CAVANAGH In the last few years, Chris has been pursuing his passion for editing scripted stories. Prior to his work on Griselda, Chris recently served as an editor on NARCOS: MEXICO Season 3 for NETFLIX. Before that, he was editing as an assistant editor and mentored by top-shelf editors on COBRA KAI for NETFLIX, STAR TREK for PARAMOUNT+, and DARK WINDS for AMC. Before moving to LA to work in scripted entertainment, Chris edited dozens of unscripted TV shows, documentaries, and indie films in NYC. When he's not in a cutting room, Chris is playing with his two kids, cooking dinner with his wife, or attempting to complete one of the 7,942 daily tasks required to exist as both a professional and a parent in the 21st century. Editing Griselda In our discussion with the GRISELDA editing team, we talk about: Not making NARCOS all over again Letting go of the facts to keep things fresh Real-time language translation before its time Making the most of mentorship Doing the director's cut during the assembly The Credits Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs Read the Rough Cut multimedia blog at Frame.io See what's new with Avid Media Composer Get FREE STUFF from Joaquin's Hollywood Editing Mentor program Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube
We close out season #10 in style as I am joined by a trio of outstanding people, Mitch Laurance, Ross Greenburg, and David Peoples. Mitch Laurance has hosted several fantastic golf podcasts, the most recent is Talking Golf Getaways. He's also one of my favorite people on the planet. Mitch's perspective as a golf Historian is invaluable. He exclusively plays hickory clubs and a golf ball from the 1920s. Rolling the golf back means nothing to him but his perspective on the loss of trust between the PGA Tour and the fans has impacted his desire to watch golf on TV; that is something the PGA Tour should sit up and listen to. We also hear about his experience being in Rome for the Ryder Cup earlier this year and why it seems to mean so much more to the European fans than it does for us in the US. Ross Greenburg is the former President of HBO Sports and is now head of Ross Greenburg Productions. He's produced many of the great films and documentaries of our time. He did 61 with Billy Crystal, Miracle the movie about the 1980 US Hockey team, a series of documentary films for the USGA including the battle between Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus at the 1962 US Open at Oakmont, the 1999 US Open won by Payne Stewart, and the 1991 Ryder Cup, the War at the Shore. Ross takes us inside the making of each of those films plus tell us what it was like being in Tokyo for the Mike Tyson vs. Buster Douglas fight and interviewing both fighters prior to the fight. David Peoples played his college golf at the Unversity of Florida alongside our good friend Mark Calc plus Rick Pearson and Larry Rentz. We get some funny stories of how those guys punished their clubs when they didn't act right, like Rick tying his putter behind the team van and dragging it back to Gainesville, and Larry trying out for the Gator football team. We also hear about David's wins at the 1990 Kapalua Invitational, the '91 Southern Open, and the '92 Anheuser Busch Classic over some legendary fields.

I close out Season 9 in style with 4 of my all-time favorite guests: Top Instructor Tom Patri, former Actor & Host of Backspin Golf Matthew Laurance, PGA Tour Legend Hal Sutton, and the former President of HBO Sports & multi-time Emmy Award Winning Executive Producer Ross Greenburg. This week Tom Patri updates us on how things are going in Southwest Florida in the wake of Hurricane Ian. We hear about how the recovery is going for local residents plus the trickle impact on the local golf scene. Many golf courses won't recover because bermuda grass can't tolerate the salt water dumped on them from the surge. Local PGA Professionals are looking at a very difficult Winter season without golf courses to teach on and students who may not come down this winter because there aren't places to stay. Please go to www.redcross.org and donate to help our friends in Florida get a roof over their heads and back on their feet. Matthew Laurance starred in the movie Eddie & the Cruisers. He shares the story of a very cool recent event where they showed the movie at a local historic theater in Lexington, Kentucky. The event was used to help raise money for victims of the flooding in Eastern Kentucky. Matthew also didn't hold back his hatred when we discussed LIV Golf. Hal Sutton and I started out by talking about his new golf course design project. We also hear which designers have influenced him. I asked Hal about the burden of expectation placed on him as a young player and what he would say to Tom Kim to help him deal with that. Hal joined my guest from last week, Tony Ruggiero, on Tony's podcast Tour Coach and they had one of the most important golf conversations that I've heard in a long time. We recap that conversation which included why we focus on our bad shots instead of the good ones and how some players place blame on everybody else instead of taking responsibility for their own golf games when things go wrong. Ross Greenburg has won over 100 major television awards over the course of his career. We talk about the movie he did along with Billy Crystal titled "61" about the 1961 homerun record chase between Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. We also talk about 3 other films he's done: "Extra Innings From 9/11...20 Years Later", the Disney movie "Miracle" about the 1980 US Hockey Team, and "Jack Nicklaus, Making of a Champion."

We are very excited to welcome today's guest, Valerie Gordon, who is an award-winning television producer, content creator and longtime storyteller. Through her career and communications strategy firm Commander-in-She, Valerie offers keynote presentations, group workshops and personal and corporate strategizing to help clients harness the power of story. A 10-time Emmy and 3-time Edward R. Murrow award winner, Valerie's television work has appeared on HBO Sports, CBS News, ESPN, Weekend Today and Lifetime. Through Commander-in-She, Valerie combines her storytelling background with her passion for advocating for women in the workforce. She provides high-achieving women with the career tools and communication skills necessary to ascend the leadership ladder and works with corporations to develop and retain future talent. Her recent book, “Fire Your Narrator! A Storyteller's Guide to Getting Out of Your Head and Into Your Life” explores the impact and influence of the stories we tell ourselves on our career success and satisfaction. In today's conversation we discuss: Valerie's story about how she left her once satisfying career as a producer after she found herself crying to her dog on the floor of her closet. How Valerie started asking herself what she didn't want anymore so she could figure out what she did want. The “red flag” words from our inner narrator that hold us back from achieving what we desire. How to get out of your head, squash your inner narrator, turn down the volume of the gremlin voice and become the author of your own narrative. How to name our inner narrator, that voice that is telling you that your not good or worth enough. How to flick the inner narrator off your shoulder and tell it where to go. We also discuss Valerie's new book: "Fire Your Narrator! A Storyteller's Guide to Getting Out of Your Head and Into Your Life". Valerie's book is funny, real and vulnerable with lots of stories that you can relate to; we highly recommend reading it. As you listen to today's conversation we invite you to think about the stories in your head, and ask yourself how are they serving you now? What do you want your story to be? And what are you going to name that inner narrator so that you can tell it where to go the next time he/she shows up. In this episode of Greece Chats I am joined by Christopher André Marks. Christopher is a director, writer and producer. His most recent work includes the acclaimed feature documentary, King Otto (2022) which was released theatrically and on streaming platforms worldwide. He has previously worked with HBO Documentaries, HBO Sports and ESPN Films' Emmy Award winning '30 for 30' series. His work has also premiered at film festivals like South by Southwest and the Tribeca Film Festival. He is American of Greek descent and is a graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts film program. The film tells the story of the Greek National Football Team's miracle triumph at the 2004 European Championships. The 300 - 1 rank outsiders, Greece, had never previously won a game or even scored a goal in a major international football tournament, but managed to single handedly knock off the giants of European football to achieve one of the biggest shocks in sports history. The team was led by legendary German coach, Otto Rehhagel, who left everything he knew behind in his own country to take on the underachieving Greek National Team. This is the story of how these two contrasting cultures, German and Greek, came together to speak the same language to write a new chapter in Greek mythology. Available on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and all major streaming platforms. -- This podcast is sponsored by Prosperty. The best way to buy, sell, or rent property in Greece. "No one comes out of college just knowing how to navigate your chosen profession. It takes time. If I did ‘Last Dance' two years ago it would have been terrible. Learn your trade, sometimes by mistake. There are no shortcuts. Find your voice, no matter what field you're in." - Jason Hehir How did Jason go from humble beginnings to interviewing Michael Jordan? How does a fear of failure motivate Jason? What common traits does he look for when assembling a team? Why did Jason take an unexpected storyline when creating the documentary "Andre the Giant"? Jason directed “Countdown,” a documentary about the first civilian-only launch into space, in near real-time. How did he get the footage from Space X? How did Jason and his team prepare for the possibility of a catastrophic bad day? Legends, Giants, and the Final Frontier Just as directors become world-class by delegating editing film, law firm owners must also trust their squad. Step out of the role of “player” and into that of “coach” to win the game and build a legacy. Build a team that has a passion for the project, a fear of failure, and the congeniality to mesh with everyone else. “The Last Dance” director and seven-time Emmy winner Jason Hehir didn't become an extraordinary director by taking on the whole project himself. He learned to let go and place his trust in the talented people he hired to suit each unique need — a break from his “do it all yourself” tradition. The result? A docu-series chronicling the Chicago Bulls dynasty that would go on to be the most-watched documentary in ESPN history. Among his many films and series, a few stand out: His “Andre The Giant” documentary, the most-watched film in HBO Sports history, and “Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space” about the first all-civilian space mission chronicled in near-real time. In this episode, Jason discusses the making of “The Last Dance,” responsible storytelling, and cultivating relationships with Michael Jordan and André René Roussimoff, better known as Andre the Giant. He also discusses the unique challenges of filming in space. Dig Deeper Research clients and their lives as thoroughly as possible. Cultivate a relationship of trust and genuine connection. Ask the most relevant questions to paint a complete picture that tells a compelling story. The ultimate gift is one of comfort knowing that their claims are understood and will be handled responsibly. This creates ease for clients and icons alike. "These icons are sharks — never looking back, always moving forward. You want them to have the pleasure of sitting back and reflecting on what they have done. Take pride in it. And once they are strapped in, they can look back almost wistfully and share their wisdom. Tell their story. " - Jason Hehir Key takeaways: Take the scenic route. On the road to greatness, there are no shortcuts. Learning a trade is often done by mistake. If you stumble, dust yourself off and keep going. Do your homework. In a world where so many look forward to the next great thing, looking back to gain context and clarity will help craft the right narrative. Fear failure. Hold up the team to the best of your ability, and do your part. Give it your all and success will be won together. Steve James needs no introduction. In my opinion, the most prolific sports documentarian of all time. He took his vision from the Cabrini Greens playground in Chicago to what became Hoop Dreams, the most successful sports doc of all time, the film that paved the way for the proliferation of Sports Films on HBO Sports, 30 for 30, and Netflix. James has since gone on to produce and direct a variety of films from Prefontaine to America to Me, an award winning docuseries on the education system in Chicago , but in this conversation we deep dive into the Legendary Hoop Dreams…. Steve James' hoop dreams started on the courts of Hampton Va where he had his first experience with basketball and race. From there he studied at James Madison University before his heart led him to follow his future wife to Southern Illinois. Steve shares the films that inspired him when he first started and tells us how stories from his father helped pushed him to return home to make a film about a basketball icon who had gotten into some trouble in a bowling alley. It is our pleasure to have Steve James on this episode of beyond the lens presented by Diesel Films.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Marquis Daisy's passion for hoops and hip hop motivated him to focus and achieve through higher education. Daisy headed north to prep school in New England and then to the Little Ivy, Williams College. His plan to be a teacher was derailed when he was offered a Production Assistant job at HBO Sports. After 6 years at HBO, Marquis found himself working freelance on a ESPN 30 for 30 film which led to him to a staff Producer position in ESPN's Original Films department….His relationship with fellow Williams College Alum and Last Dance Director Jason Hehir helped provide Marquis with the experience and confidence to know Directing films was his calling. His gift lies in his ability to capture the true essence of each subject by finding parallels from his own life experiences. This was best exemplified in what started as a 25 minute short film but turned into the critically acclaimed 30 for 30, Rand University Marquis walks us through the process of starting this project with out Randy Moss but details how he was able to secure an interview by being in the right place at the right time. He shares what it was like to work with the late great Michael K Williams and why an emotional Michael walked off set leaving Marquis worried he might not return. And he shares with us what it was like partner with National Geographic for the March on Washington, Keepers of the Dream project. You will hear all of that and much more on this episode of Beyond the Lens presented by Diesel Films
A titan of our industry, Ross Greenburg walked into HBO in 1978 as a green 23 year old and walked out the door 33 years later with over 50 Emmy Awards and 8 Peabodys. Greenburg's vision reinvented the sports documentary genre and he also created shows like Real Sports, Hard Knocks and 24/7. Ross will undoubtedly find himself inducted into the Broadcast Hall of Fame… Ross walks us through his journey from playing sports with Frank Gifford's son as a kid to negotiating contracts for Mike Tyson with Don King. We talk about Real Sports, Hard Knocks, 24/7 and all of the franchises he helped establish at HBO Sports. Ross tells us why he left HBO and explains what project he is working with them on now. You will learn a lot on this episode of Beyond the Lens presented by Diesel Films.
A 3-time Peabody Award Winner, George Roy set the standard for documentary filmmaking during the Golden era of HBO Sports. Roy and his partner Steve Stern emerged from an illustrious production roster at MLB Productions to start their own shop, Black Canyon Productions. In 1991 through a stroke of Yiddish luck (we'll get to that later) they created what many hailed as the greatest baseball documentary ever made, When It Was A Game for HBO and the rest was history…Roy's catalog is extensive and we get into several of his films including the Curse of the Bambino where he made an executive decision that surprised the powers that be at HBO Sports. You won't ever guess which member of the 1992 Dream Team was involved in a moment on-set that George will never forget. And we get into his latest work with the WWE Legends. It's another great conversation on Beyond the Lens presented by Diesel Films.

Lisa Burkhardt Worley wasn't even alive when her father tragically died of a massive heart attack while playing polo. Her mother was at the match and watched him collapse on his horse. She was at his side when he passed en route to the hospital. Sadly, Lisa's mom never recovered from this trauma. She numbed her pain with alcohol and prescription drugs - to the point she couldn't even care for Lisa and she had to live with her grandmother for several years. Fast forward a decade or three, and Lisa is now a traveling correspondent for ESPN, at the time a brand new network that covered exclusively sports. After stints with HBO Sports and the Madison Square Garden Network, it was a perfect fit. But the road lifestyle wasn't suitable for a woman with a husband and young daughter. She needed something more stable. So she turned down what at one point would have been considered her dream job. She was offered employment with ESPN as a full-time reporter, but she turned it down to take a less prestigious position in San Antonio, TX. She did this because she felt called to be there for her mother - in spite of her mother not exactly being there for her at critical times in her childhood. Now in 2021, Lisa sees that the trauma she experienced vicariously through the womb and the ensuing dysfunction in her childhood was the pressure needed to make her into a pearl that minister's the grace of God - the only Father she has ever known - to those with similar experiences.
