Troy Brown (SCFBHOF) 04-17 by Phil Kornblut, Chris Burgin, and Josh Cohen
Originally aired July 2023. RotoViz co-owner and co-host Dave Caban (RotoViz Fantasy Football Show) travels to the turn of the century when Boston sports was in a very different place. Tom Brady went down, Drew Bledsoe went in, and Troy Brown got creative. Charlie Weis was getting receivers matched up against the Steelers star edge rusher. Bill Belichick makes a shrewd bet on Ty Law and Otis Smith. Pittsburgh's defense does keep them in it long enough for Kordell Stewart and Co. (and Amos Zereoue!) to put together an amazingly swift rally setting up a real white-knuckle fourth quarter. This is Remember That Game, the podcast about sporting events that take you on a journey and maybe chart the path of the zeitgeist. I'm your host Thomas Emerick, enjoy the show. There's a new bill in Congress that aims to support domestic hardwood products, and Wisconsin manufacturers are hopeful it will pass through. The bill would create a Hardwood Products Access and Development Program. This program would give grants to fund research to show consumers the health and environmental benefits of hardwood products, such as flooring and cabinets. Kretz Lumber Company in Antigo would stand to benefit. President Troy Brown says the industry has a problem reaching consumers, and this would resolve that disconnect by spotlighting the benefits of real wood. Wisconsin Congressman Tom Tiffany is one of the authors of the legislation. He says the price tag is about $5 million, and he hopes to get it included in the Farm Bill. Anna and Anji talk all things Wolves Preseason as the Pups took on the Mavericks in their first meet up on Thursday 10/5, in Abu Dhabi! On the offensive side, Kat's three-point shooting was a standout feature, reminiscent of his FIBA performance. Rudy's performance included him actually catching the ball and blocking shots, but we hoped to see him dunking a bit more instead of laying the ball in just to have it roll out of the bucket. There were impressive moments of synergy between Kat and Rudy, with both players celebrating in unison after Kat's and-1 plays. Shake Milton made an early impact, hitting buckets and showing promise in the rotation. Troy Brown and Shake's pairing appeared promising, as did Mike Conley's ability to hit shots and involve Rudy in the offense. Overall, the Timberwolves displayed glimpses of their potential, leaving fans excited for the upcoming season. NBA free agency kicks off Friday at 3 pm PT, and while the Lakers aren't likely to be first out of the gate—that tends to be the teams with real dollars to spend—they'll most certainly be paying close attention to where the first wave of players land, and who might be left over.A big (or bigger than the Lakers can make, at least) offer to someone like Dennis Schröder could change the landscape a little, too, because it might mean the taxpayer mid-level exception people expect the Lakers to use (and currently, in theory, earmarked for Schröder) would go somewhere else. It's a thin year for free agents, so who is out there that might make sense? And what about Jalen Hood-Schifino? There's still plenty to learn about LA's first round pick from last week's draft. There's nobody better to handle the intersection of these stories than Jacob Rude, who covers the Lakers for Silver Screen and Roll, and Indiana hoops for Locked On Hoosiers. In a fabulous moment of serendipity, his worlds have collided in a major way. He joins the show to break down what he saw from Hood-Schifino last year at Indiana, and continue deliver insight into the first rounder. How does he fit with the backcourt the Lakers seem likely to bring back? What about his mental game? His approach to the craft?Rude, who watched every game the kid played last year, breaks it all down. From there, it's back to the Lakers and free agency looming. Before they get there, the Lakers have to make decisions about Mo Bamba and Malik Beasley. Do they pick up those team options? Why would it make sense to bring both back? And what about potential free agents? Would a veteran like Kevin Love make sense, if he'd take the midlevel? Jeff Green? And why does nobody ever mention Troy Brown in those "run it back" conversations?Should he be? What about Lonnie Walker IV?HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky, with guest Jacob Rude! NBA free agency kicks off Friday at 3 pm PT, and while the Lakers aren't likely to be first out of the gate—that tends to be the teams with real dollars to spend—they'll most certainly be paying close attention to where the first wave of players land, and who might be left over. A big (or bigger than the Lakers can make, at least) offer to someone like Dennis Schröder could change the landscape a little, too, because it might mean the taxpayer mid-level exception people expect the Lakers to use (and currently, in theory, earmarked for Schröder) would go somewhere else. His approach to the craft? Rude, who watched every game the kid played last year, breaks it all down. Jeff Green? And why does nobody ever mention Troy Brown in those "run it back" conversations? Should he be? What about Lonnie Walker IV? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky, with guest Jacob Rude! SEGMENT 1: More deep dive into Jalen Hood-Schifino. SEGMENT 2: Can JHS play enough D to stay on the court? How should the Lakers handle Beasley and Bamba? SEGMENT 3: Potential free agents... Kevin Love? Jeff Green? What about Walker and Brown? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! eBay Motors For parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. It took a few minutes, but Darvin Ham had finally seemed to build up a little bit of goodwill with Lakers fans through the first two rounds of the playoffs. Well, a big chunk of that has been eaten away by the results of the first three games of the team's Western Conference Finals series against Denver. Facing an 0-3 hole and the chances of getting swept tonight at the Crypt in Game 4, scrutiny has again returned in a big way.Is Darvin making the right moves? Is he pushing the right buttons? Is he pulling the right levers? The answers to questions like these really depend on your view of the roster as a whole, and how the Lakers match up against a very, very good Denver team.At the core of these discussions is D'Angelo Russell, who has been horrible through the first three games of this series. Most fans want him benched, if not yanked from the rotation. Ham shortened his minutes considerably in Game 3, but Russell still got 20 minutes of burn. Is that too much? Is it malpractice? Our answer might not be that popular.Meanwhile, many fans are calling for Ham to start bringing in guys like Troy Brown, Max Christie, and even dusting off Malik Beasley to see if shots will fall. But are those aren't really adjustments so much as dart throws. Is it time to throw darts, though? And really, is the overarching problem Ham, or too many guys in a shortening rotation who aren't playing well enough?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Is Darvin mucking up this series?SEGMENT 2: Can the Lakers bench Russell? The Lakers looked awful in Game 2 upstate, and needed to bounce back in a big way Saturday night in Game 3. And bounce back they did.Anthony Davis returned to his big game ways, with 25 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and four blocks. LeBron James, who didn't take a shot in the first quarter and didn't play in the fourth, still finished with 21 points on 6-11 from the floor, and 7-8 from the line. D'Angelo Russell carried the Lakers offensively in the first half, and finished with 21 points. Lonnie Walker IV, getting the Troy Brown minutes, gave the Lakers 12 points in 24 minutes.Overall, the Lakers got back to the line, limited turnovers, and actually made 3-pointers (48.4%). And when that happens, it's really hard to beat them. Especially when the defense is cranked up to the level it was on Saturday. Yes, the Warriors missed some shots they might often make (or did at least on Thursday), but the Lakers were very active, and found a level of aggression coming higher out on the floor to interrupt GSW's pick and rolls, without losing interior coverage.Game 4 is Monday in LA.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. Under normal circumstances, Sunday's 112-108 loss to the Knicks wouldn't be a major source of concern. The Lakers played hard, they didn't underestimate their opponent. They just weren't sharp. It happens. Except right now, the Lakers simply can't afford to have games where they're not sharp, and can't execute well enough to win games there for the taking. With the loss, the Lakers drop into a statistical tie with the Thunder for the 10th spot in the West. Still only a game out of 7th, and two out of 6th, but obviously a much shakier spot than they were 24 hours ago. It was a few things - Malik Beasley, Jarred Vanderbilt and Troy Brown provided absolutely nothing for the Lakers in support of Anthony Davis and D'Angelo Russell (who was again excellent on Sunday, with 33 points on 13-19 shooting. As a team, the Lakers didn't get to the line enough, and when they did, they - and Davis more specifically - didn't hit enough of them. Darvin Ham erred it seemed in not keeping either Russell or Davis on the floor on a night where the supporting cast wasn't elevating the team (Davis was a +9, Russell +14 on a night the Lakers lost by four). But the person who put the blame on himself first and foremost was Davis. He took responsibility for the loss, which while not totally accurate - AD wasn't dominant, but he wasn't awful, and it certainly wasn't one of those games where Davis sort of floats through 48 minutes - was still a good sign of leadership, of understanding what the Lakers need from him night to night, and a reason to be encouraged about Tuesday's game in New Orleans. Davis has, for the most part, responded well to games in which he felt he underperformed. We'll see. And we'll see as well if Davis plays in both ends of this week's back-to-back, Tuesday against the Pelicans, Wednesday in Houston. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers don't execute, and they lose. SEGMENT 2: Anthony Davis puts the loss on his shoulders. Is he being fair to himself? SEGMENT 3: The standings are tight, and the Lakers need to keep Davis on the floor for every game now, right? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Of late, The Athletic's Shams Charania hasn't exactly been the bearer of good news for Lakers fans. And Monday, talking with FanDuelTV, wasn't much different.Charania noted that while the Lakers are going to re-evaluate LeBron James after three weeks, there is certainly some belief that the actual length of LeBron's absence could extend past that mark. Well past it, potentially, calling into serious question just how much regular season action James might get before a (hypothetical) play-in matchup. Or whether the Lakers can hang on long enough to even make those last few games meaningful. And what exactly will be the considerations the Lakers and LeBron make when deciding whether LeBron can/should return to action? It's all very speculative and super-unpleasant for the Lakers, and puts that much more pressure on Anthony Davis to elevate the team, D'Angelo Russell to get back on the floor, and the supporting cast to rise a little above role player status. But the flip side? The schedule is favorable. The Lakers play teams in front of them, they play teams that are slumping. They play teams, like Tuesday against Memphis, missing significant pieces (Ja Morant, Steven Adams, Brandon Clarke). They've shown themselves fully capable of winning games since the deadline. One reason? Guys like Troy Brown Jr., who has thrived since the Lakers reorganized the roster at the deadline, finding a steadier role, greater confidence and plenty of rhythm. He's now firmly occupying that spot on the roster of cheap offseason additions last summer that now look appealing to hold on to this summer, but could be tough because he's outplayed his contract. Finally, the Lakers will retire Pau Gasol's 16 on Tuesday. He's one of the best humans we've covered in sports, and now finds himself not only representing a symbol of basketball greatness and Lakers greatness, but as important connective tissue for the memory of Kobe Bryant. It's a unique role he is well-suited to play.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Just how many games is LeBron going to miss, now?SEGMENT 2: The burden on AD, and the increasing confidence of Troy Brown.SEGMENT 3: Pau Gasol gets his jersey retired tonight.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Of late, The Athletic's Shams Charania hasn't exactly been the bearer of good news for Lakers fans. And Monday, talking with FanDuelTV, wasn't much different. Charania noted that while the Lakers are going to re-evaluate LeBron James after three weeks, there is certainly some belief that the actual length of LeBron's absence could extend past that mark. It's a unique role he is well-suited to play. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Just how many games is LeBron going to miss, now? SEGMENT 2: The burden on AD, and the increasing confidence of Troy Brown. SEGMENT 3: Pau Gasol gets his jersey retired tonight. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Laker Film Room - Dedicated to the Study of Lakers Basketball
Without LeBron, Anthony Davis, and D'Angelo Russell, the Lakers got a much needed and important win over the Thunder on Wednesday night. Pete, Mike, and Darius discuss the game and highlight the individual performances that carried the team, including Dennis Schröder's big second half, Austin Reaves' near perfect shooting night, Rui Hachimura's defense and rebounding, and Troy Brown's hot shooting and hard nosed defense. Much of Monday's show was dedicated to the question of whether Dennis Schröder ought to be in the starting lineup for the Lakers and Darvin Ham. Apparently, it wasn't enough to quell any controversy, particularly after the Lakers were wiped out in Portland and Schröder was a non-factor.When LeBron James returns, perhaps as early as tonight against the Pelicans at home, should Schröder remain? Because D'Angelo Russell is going to start, along with James and Anthony Davis and, presumably for the moment at least, Rui Hachimura? And if it's not Schröder, who should it be?Malik Beasley?Troy Brown, Jr.?Jarred Vanderbilt?Austin Reaves? As much as fans are unhappy with Ham's choices, there may not be a clear cut, obvious answer, here. Each has its appeal, each brings some problems. Especially when considering the rotation more holistically. From there, it's a deep dive into the newest Lakers. David Locke, host of Locked on Jazz (and our boss!) joins the show to deliver a scouting report on the former Jazz men. What does Beasley bring? What, to use the terminology of Jazz coach Will Hardy, is his superpower, and how can the Lakers take advantage of it? Is he best suited to be a starter? Can he hold up enough defensively to become a key contributor for the Lakers down the stretch? Because the defense? It wasn't great in Utah. What about Vanderbilt? On the one hand, his energy was infectious in Utah, and often helped elevate the Jazz. But then, as Locke notes, you'd look at the advanced numbers and see the team was often worse with him out there. What gives? What are his strengths and weaknesses as a defender? What space does he have to grow?Great insight on players who will be critical for the Lakers as they try to make a playoff push.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: If Dennis Schröder doesn't start, who should?SEGMENT 2: David Locke joins to scout Malik Beasley. By electing to sit both Anthony Davis and LeBron James Monday in Brooklyn, the Lakers were essentially putting all their eggs in Tuesday's basket, turning their game against the Knicks into a must-win type game. And win they did, though it wasn't easy. (It never is.) 129-123 was the final score, as the Lakers topped the Knicks in overtime behind 28/10/11 from James, 27/9 from Davis, 19 points from Rui Hachimura (who started, more on that later) and 17/8 from Russell Westbrook.Westbrook, it should be noted, was both a significant contributor to a bad stretch of play in the last few minutes after LA built a 6-point lead with about 90 seconds left-- making him a large reason they went to overtime -- and arguably the team's best player once they got there. He was great at times, he was awful at times, and as it always seems to be with Westbrook, there just wasn't a whole lot of normal stuff in between. There never is much normal in between, which is one reason Westbrook can be so difficult to blend in with a team. There are times when what he's doing works well, and helps the Lakers. There are other times (too many) when it's the opposite. But in all cases, he's rarely mixing and blending with the rest of the group in any cohesive way.So what does Ham do? Well, on Tuesday, he was short a lot of options. He did, however, change up the starting lineup, with Patrick Beverley on the sidelines, inserting Hachimura in and then running with LBJ, AD, Schroder and Troy Brown. While it's very possible Ham goes back to Patrick Beverley when he's healthy... here's hoping he doesn't, because this is a lineup that would make sense going forward. And what happens when Austin Reaves comes back? What kind of opening and closing lineups does Ham deploy at that point? Finally, in the second half Tuesday LeBron passed both Mark Jackson and Steve Nash to move into fourth all time on the assists list. For as much attention as has been given to James passing Kareem on the all time scoring list (coming in the next few games), this is about as remarkable an achievement. To be this high on both lists? That's bonkers. The level of consistency James has shown through his career is stunning, and almost numbing. But don't let yourself not appreciate it.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers score a huge win in New York, and had to earn it to say the least.SEGMENT 2: Darvin Ham changes the starting lineup out of necessity. Will he roll with it going forward?SEGMENT 3: LeBron passes Jackson and Nash, underscoring how incredible, and consistent, his career has been.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. For all the excitement about getting Anthony Davis back in the lineup, and for putting newly acquired forward Rui Hachimura into it, there was still the grind-of-the-NBA nature of Wednesday's game. It was the second night of a back-to-back, against a lousy and slumping San Antonio team that has done precious little winning of late. It's not unusual to see teams do the bare minimum to get by, which it seemed the Lakers were willing to do in a 113-104 win that was competitive into the fourth quarter. The game was disjointed, as Darvin Ham negotiated a minutes restriction for Davis and found minutes for Hachimura. But it was easy to see the impact of both. Davis technically didn't pick up right where he left off - there was about four minutes of rusty play before he got it back into gear, finishing with 21 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks in only 26 minutes.Hachimura, who also came off the bench, seemed a little nervous early before finding a groove, finishing with 12 points and six rebounds. So what did it mean to have those two guys in the lineup? The downstream impacts were significant. Thomas Bryant played 21 minutes, but Wenyen Gabriel didn't play at all. But the three guard lineups, specifically Dennis Schröder, Patrick Beverley and Russell Westbrook, were also part of the game, much to the consternation of Lakers Twitter. So is Ham going to cling to small ball? What does this look like when Austin Reaves and Lonnie Walker IV are available again, which is expected over the next week or so? At the least, guys are going to get squeezed. Players like Walker and Troy Brown might find minutes more difficult to come by, particularly if Hachimura ends up in the starting lineup.Ham is going to have a lot more branches on his option tree, that's for certain.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers get it done against San Antonio in a workmanlike, clock-punching fashion. LeBron got help, and didn't have to carry the offense, which is great!SEGMENT 2: More on AD's return and how he looked.
