Speaking Of Show - Making Healthcare Work for You & Founder's Mission Series
Stephen White is the founder of The PC, which sees 15,000 patients a week, is profitable, and is helping people find the purpose in their 4th quarter of life. You'd never know that Steve previously had such severe cognition issues that he couldn't remember the name of a rhinoceros when shown a picture. After years of concussions from football and frequent seizures, leading to cognitive decline, Steve decided he needed to find a way to heal himself. He began a remarkable journey of studying medical information, learning about treatments, eventually creating a protocol for himself that included everything from activity, nutrition, various treatments, building community, and finding hope and purpose. His hard work paid off - he achieved a 70% gain in cognitive function. Through The PC, he's helping others live a life of health and purpose, so they can truly thrive in their “4th quarter” of life. Through personalized treatment plans, integrating medical care and building “Home Teams,” patients can “live on purpose,” which “leads to living with purpose.” Don't miss this inspirational story of healing, hope, and community. Stephen White, 40, shares on Premier Christian Radio about the many sacrifices made in order to provide his son Josiah, 14, with a Christian education. He is one of 13 claimants supported by the Christian Legal Centre who have launched an application for a judicial review over the government's VAT tax raid on private and independent schools. Those bringing the challenge include the award-winning Emmanuel School in Derby, the Branch Christian School in Yorkshire, the King's School in Hampshire and the Wyclif Independent Christian School in South Wales. This Election Day, Nebraska is the only state with competing abortion-related measures on the ballot – Mark Irons takes us to Nebraska to hear how the Church is working to disentangle abortion misinformation and Human Coalition Action's Chelsey Youman speaks to what's at stake with pro-life ballot initiatives across 10 states. Ireland recently released a wide-ranging report from the Irish government alleging more than 2,300 instances of abuse across 308 schools – Colm Flynn speaks with survivors and the Archbishop of Dublin in a special report from Ireland. From the Ireland investigation – to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles' historic settlement with clerical sex abuse survivors this week – The Catholic Project's Stephen White discusses what the Catholic Church has done and needs to do more of to provide safeguards against abuse. And we give you an inside look at the Vatican's restored baldacchino in St. Peter's Basilica.
I've never been to space, but it has been said that from outer space there are three man-made technologies visible: the Great Wall of China and electric illumination of the world's largest cities are the first two. The third are the green crop circles created by center pivot irrigation. It has been said that the center pivot irrigation system is “perhaps the most significant mechanical innovation in agriculture since the replacement of draft animals by the tractor”. Today, over 50% of the irrigated field acres in North America are using the center pivot concept. And other modern agricultural countries are catching up, such as Brazil, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. It's no coincidence that this agricultural technology was invented by someone who farmed on top of the largest aquifer in the western hemisphere: the Ogallala Aquifer which is sometimes called the High Plains Aquifer. Geologists estimate the aquifer was formed about 5 million years ago by ancient erosion from the Rocky Mountains carried eastward by rivers, along with the additional accumulation of countless rains and snows. It now stretches beneath 174,000 square miles, underlying parts of eight states: South Dakota, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma and New Mexico, which makes up most of what we call the great plains. This area has been the setting for numerous big ag stories over the years, from the great cattle drives of the 1800s that we covered in our Cattle Kingdom episode, to the land grab of the Homestead Act to the dirty thirties of the dust bowl. But there is no doubt that the center pivot was a major game changer, and it allowed the tough settlers of this rough country to turn this desert land into one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world. I've had the chance to live in two different agricultural areas made possible by the Ogallala aquifer: in the panhandle of Texas where I lived and worked in Amarillo and Dumas, Texas. Then years later I lived in Northwest Kansas where I commuted up to my job in Benkelman, Nebraska. So I've been able to see firsthand what this incredible resource can do for farming and for rural economics when combined with the revolutionary ag technology we'll discuss today: the center-pivot invented by Frank Zybach. Frank definitely fits my criteria for these history episodes as an ag innovator that I wish I could interview if they were still alive. It highlights the impact innovation can have on the ag economy and carries valuable lessons for all of us aspiring ag innovators out there. But it also is a case study about agricultural sustainability. The aquifer is a limited resource, built from snowmelt coming off the rocky mountains over thousands of years. In the 72 years since Frank Zybach patented his invention, water levels in many parts of the Ogallala Aquifer have dropped drastically, many times larger than what could possibly be replenished. Joseph Jenkins Knapp, Jr. was expecting to receive a sizable inheritance upon the death of his 82-year-old great uncle, wealthy retired shipmaster and trader Captain Joseph White. But with debts piling up, Knapp decided he couldn't wait for natural causes; in April of 1830, he and his brother, John Francis Knapp, hired a hitman to murder him, faked some blackmail letters, and, in the end, didn't get any inheritance at all.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Stephen White, executive director of the Catholic Project, joins our hosts to discuss his organization's recent report examining generational differences among the men who are ordained to the priesthood.
Tracy sits down with Stephen White, Chief Strategy Officer at COSI (one of her favorite science museums!), and discusses learning lunchboxes, the power of STEM, and engaging exhibits that people love. Mr. Stephen White, Esq. is the Chief Strategy Officer, and serves as In-House Counsel at the Center for Science and Industry (COSI), the number one science center in the nation by USA Today. During his career, he founded the theory of Servant Learning as an engagement strategy to help bridge the “COVID Canyon” education gap with the philosophy to inspire others to dream more, do more, and become more. In his role at COSI, he oversees the development of optimizing the entrepreneurial business model for the organization, building new models of impactful education programming, creating and implementing a global strategy for public partnerships at the city, state, and federal levels, and leading the execution of COSI's Strategic Plan. A signature initiative during his career was the creation of the Learning Lunchbox model of engagement, which seeks to, among other things, help feed hungry lives and feed hungry minds. These STEM kits are developed in partnership with the White House, NASA, U.S. Department of Energy, and more, with over 150,000 being distributed across the globe. Stephen is the recipient of several awards, including the U.K. Global Blooloop 50 Influencer, Midwest Museum Association Leadership Award, 40 Under 40, Columbus CEO Future 50, the John Glenn Young Alumni Achievement Award, and more. He has over a decade of experience in partnerships and policy, including serving as General Counsel in the U.S. Senate, where he worked on critical areas of public policy to help address issues such as workforce development and education. As a first-generation student, Mr. White earned three degrees, all from The Ohio State University, including his B.A. in English and Political Science, J.D. from the OSU Moritz College of Law, and his M.A. in Public Policy and Management from the OSU John Glenn College of Public Affairs, and extended his learning at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at the OSU Moritz College of Law covering nonprofit law and leadership, as well as several state and federal boards including as Chair of the International Space Station Subcommittee on Education. He has served as a speaker at SXSW EDU, U.S. Department of Education, TEDx, and other conferences examining innovative strategies on partnerships to help address workforce development and education equity.
Stephen White discusses what Pope Pius XII says about recovering our culture's lost sense of sin, and Dr. Lawrence Feingold examines what St. Paul says about God's covenant with Israel. We look at the “Who, what, when where and why” of the mysteries of the Rosary with Steve Ray.
This week Jeff and Dave wrap up their 3-parter on Aeschylus' famous play. When Io mooves onto the scene, her first impulse is to show compassion for the shackled Promy, even though she herself is writhing in gadfly-induced agony. Why? To seek an answer, we take a long look at the thesis of Stephen White, namely that the play subtly reinforces ancient Greek gender roles: women are to be complaisant and domestic (something Io has transgressed), while men's ingenuity ought not threaten the social order (as Prometheus has done). But is this a persuasive way to look at the plot, or even helpful? What does the play mean, and can Bernad Knox shed any light on that question? Stick around, and we'll get it all sorted.

Many employers say they are desperate to get staff back into the office more often, but what's the best and fairest way to wean employees off remote working? As companies from tech to banking grapple with this issue, Evan Davis and guests discuss the productivity pros and cons, the impact on company culture and career progression, and the future of the office space itself. With many staff reluctant to give up the flexibility of remote working, is a hybrid model the answer to keeping them happy and how many office days each week should you go for? Plus, where do employees stand legally on return to the office requests, and what happens when workers simply refuse to comply? Evan is joined by: Kelly Beaver, CEO of Ipsos in the UK and Ireland; Stephen White, Chief Operating Officer of Santander UK; Ranjit Dhindsa, head of employment at Fieldfisher; and Nicholas Bloom, professor of economics, Stanford University. Stephen White, of the Bitesize B2B Marketing Podcast invited Chris on to chat about some of Refine Labs' recent research experiments, and how Chris approaches growth with an experimental mindset. They cover why an experimental mindset is so important, and how teams can efficiently run experiments. Chris covers the self reported attribution experiment in detail, how that has paved the way for other programs at Refine Labs, and more! With Ed on paternity leave, JD talks with Stephen White, executive director of The Catholic Project, which aims to respond to the Church's abuse crisis. Steve has a lot in common with Ed, except his taste in watches.
Merry Christmas! Ed hosts an end of year news quiz with special guests Katie Ruvalcaba, Stephanie Slade, and Stephen White, and JD behaves about as well as you'd expect.
