In Episode 017 of The Former Lawyer Podcast, Sarah talks with Nicole Abboud. Nicole first practiced family law, then fashion law, and along the way started the podcast The Gen Y Lawyer and founded Abboud Media, a modern strategy and consulting agency specializing in social media, podcast, and video marketing for lawyers and law firms. She recently pivoted and is focusing on blogging about sustainability, inclusion, style, courage, and self-expression. In this conversation, Nicole shares about: Deciding she wanted to be a lawyer at a young age; Why she grew to hate practicing law; How she found herself feeling nervous and nauseous every workday; Why she opened her own fashion law practice even though she had started to suspect that she didn’t want to be a lawyer; How starting The Gen Y Lawyer Podcast ultimately gave her the courage and the direction to leave the law; How creating content for marketing her own practice created a business opportunity to start a company providing branding and marketing services for lawyers; Why the human desire for certainty can keep you stuck as a lawyer; The one thing she would have done differently when leaving the law; Why she’s pivoting again in her career, and how much easier it is this time around; and much more! As we enter the last quarter of the year, I decided it would be a good idea to reflect on goals I set at the beginning of the year to see how far I've come and to assess where I'm going with my law practice in the next 3 months. I decided to reach out and invite Nicole Abboud, former host of the Gen Why Lawyer Podcast and owner of Abboud Media, a video and podcast production and marketing company helping lawyers and law firms, to chat about both of our businesses and how we plan on growing them.  What we discuss in this episode: How to make the decision to change practice areas or career trajectories when you realize you're not happy in your current position Should you experiment with your marketing or should you stick to one method to see what happens? Why the client is the real hero of your marketing efforts How can you figure out whom your ideal client is? How we set goals for the year and how we adjust them as we go Does writing down financial goals actually help? What is minimalistic marketing and how can we apply this concept into our practices? How to avoid giving into the madness that is social media and instead, focusing on one or 2 platforms and posting quality content on those platforms How do you measure success in your business? The importance of tracking potential clients and noticing trends Contact Information: Connect with Nicole on Instagram @nic_abboud www.abboudmedia.com Resources:  A special thanks goes to our sponsor Abby Connect, the leading live receptionist. Content marketing presents a great opportunity for lawyers who wish to increase their visibility online and grow their practices. Through blogging and video creation, lawyers can begin to establish genuine relationships with potential clients online. But, of course, there's always that fear of crossing ethical rules. That's what my guest and I discuss in this episode.  I’m joined by Nick Rishwain, Vice President of Client Relations and Business Development for Experts.com, an online marketing platform for expert witnesses and consultants, and we're tackling the topic of creating compelling content ethically.  What We Discuss in This Episode: Lawyers have to create content – it’s no longer merely a “consideration,” it has to be done Your customers/clients are not reading law journals or academic journals so make sure you’re creating content on platforms where your audience and clients are Common objections that lawyers have when it comes to creating content  Why it’s not necessarily the best strategy to load your blog posts with law firm-specific SEO keywords if you actually want them to be readable What is newsjacking and how can you use it to generate ideas for content you can create? When creating content about current events, you want to make sure you don’t appear to be ambulance-chasing  Is there room for more educational-type of content as opposed to more marketing-driven type of content What type of Call-To-Action can go along with your content? Why you shouldn’t worry about “giving away all of your secrets” when you’re creating content How you can be using videos to reach out to potential clients Why any type of videos, including Facebook Live and Instagram Stories, are helpful in familiarizing potential clients with you For how long should you retain copies of your communications? Video is no longer about you, it's about the client.  Tips: be in a place where you feel comfortable and won't be interrupted, share 1-2 tips, have a plan for what you'll say, share a story or statistics, ask people to share your video, create compelling content that is shareable What to use for videos: tripod, have a plan, schedule the videos, use your smartphone, make sure you consider lighting (try to be near a window for natural light or buy a selfie light) Where to put videos: Go where your audience is, which has become everywhere! Also, Youtube, the 2nd largest search engine. Consider the place you prefer to be, which one do you like: Instagram, Youtube, Twitter, Facebook? Nicole Abboud's story starts off like most of our successful millennials' stories: a "blissfully ignorant" ingenue pursuing her dreams in 2008. Abboud's dream - or, at least, one of them - was to be a lawyer. Until she realized that she was wrong.  As a lawyer, she started her own practice and differentiated herself by branding herself as a "fashion lawyer." After a few months, however, she shut down the practice. She realized that her heart was not fully in it.  "And I went through this whole self-discovery phase of just moping around and complaining to anyone who would listen - to my family [and] my friends about this thing that I was feeling." Abboud felt like she was the only one who was feeling it, but she soon found out that she wasn't alone in feeling unhappy. In March of 2015, she launched her podcast, the Gen Why Lawyer Podcast, in an "effort to reach out to other millennial lawyers across the U.S. to see if they felt the same way - if they were unhappy - and just what they were doing about it." LISTEN to learn about how Abboud demands what she’s worth and how she plans to change the landscape of the millennial workforce.
