This episode originally aired as Episode 143 on May 7, 2018. After two decades, Lee Rosen figured out how to own a lucrative law firm without having to work in his firm 24/7/365. One he realized he could be the owner, not the practitioner, Lee found a team to run the business and then sold it. Now, he travels full-time while teaching other lawyers how they can build their practices into sellable businesses. Lee joins former host, Karima Gulick, in this episode to share how he built a lucrative firm, how he set up his systems that eventually helped him expand his business, and how you can build a solid business that allows you to work from anywhere. Sexual harassment and bullying in the workplace occur more frequently than one would think. For many lawyers who find themselves victims of sexual harassment and assault, it can be difficult to speak up or seek the necessary help, especially in the workplace. They suffer in silence out of fear that speaking up will cause too much damage to their careers or that their reports won't be taken seriously. Joining me to shed light on sexual harassment, bullying, and what law firms should be doing to end workplace harassment is Lauren Rikleen, Founder and President of the Rikleen Institute for Strategic Leadership. She is the author of the new book: The Shield of Silence: How Power Perpetuates a Culture of Harassment and Bullying in the Workplace. Many Millennials are at a point in their lives where they're thinking about having or are already having babies. The thought of having children while managing a full workload as a lawyer can be stressful because, lets face it, being a parent is a full time job on its own. So if you're considering starting a family, are currently pregnant, or already have a kiddo, what can you be doing right now to best prepare yourself for parenthood while also running your law practice? I'm joined by Family Law attorney and Certified Family Law Specialist in Redondo Beach, Ca, Lovette Mioni. Lovette runs her own law practice and along with her husband, is raising two young children. She joins me to talk about how having children affected her business and changed her view of how she wanted to practice. She talks to me about what she had to do to prepare her assistant and those she worked with to carry on with office work while she was on leave and what she did to manage her client's expectations while she was unavailable. Are you inching closer and closer to burnout? Be honest! You might be. It's fairly common for high achievers to burn out, especially if they're not taking care of themselves physically and mentally. That's what happened to me at the end of last year, 2018, when I found myself facing a breakdown of the sort I've never experienced before. I had been busy trying to grow my business for two years that I drove myself into the ground. Luckily, I discovered meditation and yoga right at the 11th hour. In this episode, I share a personal story about how I how I spent 2 years building a business that led me to a breakdown, the one thing I did that proved to be a breakthrough, how I became 10% happier, and how you can too. We are living in a DIY world and lawyers can no longer be protective of their old ways of practicing law. Consumers are turning online for legal answers and many even go to YouTube to get help. This is a good sign for lawyers looking to fill a gap in the market by providing help to consumers who don't need full representation but instead, require help with a specific aspect of their legal matter. That's why I wanted to explore the world of limited scope representation. This conversation will shed light on the growing appeal of limited scope representation, especially for lawyers who are seeking an alternative way of practicing law. Joining me are Brooke Moore and Laura O'Bryan, co-Founders of MyVirtual.Lawyer, a virtual law firm offering limited scope representation in the areas of Family Law, Estate Planning, and Business Law. Brooke and Laura break down what limited scope representation is, how it can help your existing law firm grow (or how it can replace your existing practice all together), and what you can do to get started with LSR. On March 3rd, 2019, I woke up, I went to Instagram and proceeded to delete the app off of my phone. I also deleted the Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, and LinkedIn apps and made the decision to not log in for the next 30 days. I needed a break. I'm a social media-lover so this decision was huge for me, but it was necessary. I noticed that there's this feeling of overwhelm going around when it comes to social media. There's a lot of push back against this state of always having to post on the platform in order to remain relevant. Many people are outright deleting their accounts because they're exhausted. As more and more articles surface highlighting the negative effects of social media on our mental health and behaviors, the more intrigued I became with reassessing my own usage of the platforms. In this episode, I share the results of my 30-day social media detox experiment and describe how I plan on using the platforms in a more sustainable way going forward. The legal environment these days almost demands that lawyers become experts in their practice areas. So before you can begin building your authority in a specific practice area or industry, it's important to select a niche that provides the best possibilities for growth. Joining me today is Jacob Slowik, a partner with Joseph, Aleem & Slowik who represents healthcare businesses and co-author of the book, Small Law; Big Success: How to Use Business Niche Specialization to Grow a Multi-Million Dollar Law Practice. We are celebrating our four-year anniversary on the pod! Yowza! Thank you so much for your continued support. It means the world to Karima and me. In this celebratory episode, Karima and I are chatting about a symptom that many Millennials seem to be suffering from and don't even realize it – Millennial burnout. We also touch upon the issue of perfectionism that many lawyers find themselves grappling with. Must we spend hours reviewing a simple email out of fear of sending a less-than-perfect draft? We round out the conversation by exploring what “self-care” really means and if it truly lives up to its promise. For many, public speaking is terrifying. For others, it's just a fun hobby. For me, having the opportunity to stand in front of a crowd and capture their attention for a prolonged period of time is a privilege and an opportunity for business development, when done right. The way you think about things affect how you feel and that impacts how you behave and how you show up in the world. If you're like me, you might have a lot of negative self-talk that feels limiting. If only we knew how to change our mindset, we could probably unlock a whole new level of amazingness, right? Well, let's undo some mindset damage, shall we? My guest today is Master Certified Life Coach, former women's rights lawyer, and host of the popular podcast, Unf*ck Your Brain, Kara Loewentheil. Kara holds a B.A. from Yale and a J.D. from Harvard Law. She helps women break through their confidence issues and negative self-talk and finally put into action their true desires. As we celebrate Valentine's Day this week (and yes, we realize this is a totally made up “holiday”), we thought it'd be fun to talk about love and relationships as a lawyer. Lawyers are busy and often work long hours so finding time to date or nurture a loving relationship can often be difficult. Joining me today is Dr. Sharon Cohen, relationship and love consultant. She received her PhD from the University of Texas and has been helping busy professionals have committed and fulfilling relationships. Dr. Cohen shares why it's important for women to tap into their inner energy when seeking a partner, how you can reignite the spark in a long-term relationship, and how to make time for your loved ones. Is it time to rethink success? Maybe you dream of buying a big house or you want to travel all over the world. Maybe you want to work fewer hours each week or you want to spend more time with your family. Lawyers have so many aspirations but for some reason, we tend to think that there is only one way to achieve those dreams – work ridiculously hard for many years and then eventually, acquire everything you want. Well, it's time to get creative and smart with how we make our money and how we craft our dream lives. If that's what you want, then it's time to opt out. Joining me on the show today to explain what opting out means is attorney, entrepreneur, law professor, and LinkedIn Learning educator, Dana Robinson. Seeing that it's the beginning of a brand new year, assuming you're listening to this right when it airs, I thought it would be perfect to talk about clarifying our vision, laying down some goals, and fiercely chasing after them. Whether you already set your intentions for the year or you're just now getting around to thinking about the year ahead, it's never too late to learn how to properly align your goals for the year with your vision for your life and career. If you're thinking of adding a new practice area, transitioning to a new job, or leaving the law all together, you'll find the courage and the action plan in this episode. Joining me to help us do just that is attorney, speaker, author, and personal and professional development strategic coach, Heather Hubbard. ------------ A huge thank you goes to our two show sponsors: LexisNexis: From predictive analytics to research solutions, legal tools from LexisNexis can help you research more thoroughly, work more efficiently and build stronger strategies. What if you can't formulate your vision because it's too scary or overwhelming? What do you do then? Once you've locked down your vision, you have to ask yourself: where am I now and where do I want to be? After setting your strategy, you then begin to lay down some goals to support the strategy What should you use to measure your progress and determine if you're even moving in the right direction? When you finally reach your goal(s), you should celebrate! So should you pop bottles, buy new clothes, or celebrate with others? As we enter the last quarter of the year, I decided it would be a good idea to reflect on goals I set at the beginning of the year to see how far I've come and to assess where I'm going with my law practice in the next 3 months. I decided to reach out and invite Nicole Abboud, former host of the Gen Why Lawyer Podcast and owner of Abboud Media, a video and podcast production and marketing company helping lawyers and law firms, to chat about both of our businesses and how we plan on growing them. What we discuss in this episode: How to make the decision to change practice areas or career trajectories when you realize you're not happy in your current position Should you experiment with your marketing or should you stick to one method to see what happens? Why the client is the real hero of your marketing efforts How can you figure out whom your ideal client is?
