My guest this week is Lenise Bent, who was one of a handful of women working in the Hollywood recording studio business in a technical role during the 1970s, and was the first woman to receive an RIAA Platinum album for her engineering of AutoAmerican by Blondie. While working as an assistant at Village Recorder, Lenise worked on a number of classic albums, including Aja by Steely Dan, Breakfast In America by Supertramp, and Tusk by Fleetwood Mac. She then became chief engineer for producer Mike Chapman, working on albums by Blondie, The Knack and Suzi Quatro. Lenise eventually moved over to post-production sound where she worked as a sound editor, sound supervisor and re-recording mixer on films like Shrek, Spirit and Shrek 2. During the interview we spoke about her getting her start as an assistant at Village Recorders, working on Steely Dan's Aja Album, being chief engineer for producer Mike Chapman, getting sick from the intense work schedule, starting back at the bottom in post, and much more. I spoke with Lenise from her office in Los Angeles via zoom. On the intro I'll take a look at how Metal continues to thrive, and the death of the key change in modern music. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 84272927, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

Today's very special guest and last interview for Cassandra is her sister! We dive into Japan and it's different culture, how she adapted and got a job working at Oshima Shipyards teaching English to the high-lever workers. Taka and Keiko helped them a lot through their journey, so much that Lenise ended up going to work for him and help manages two of his bars in Sasebo, Japan. Lastly, through this tale, we talk about how she moved back to San Diego, how she found her job in SPAWAR after a long year of difficulty.
Even if she hadn't broken new ground for women in pro audio, Lenise Bent would have an amazing career, with a discography that includes Steelydan, Blondie, and Supertramp, just to name a few. She's got great stories, and no one tells them better than she can.

Episode 6 is a deep dig with the pioneering engineer and producer Lenise Bent. Lenise comes form a family in love with music. She was one of very few women in the technical field of audio engineering in the 1970's. First hired at L.A.'s Village Recorders, along with three other women, by Spam scion, George A. (Geordie) Hormell II, who thought women would make superior engineers, Lenise is the sole survivor from that initial hire. She has had a long career in both music and film. She bagan at Village Recorders climbing up the ladder of responsibilities and then her first legendary record she worked on was the seminal Steely Dan album 'Aja' and things just snowballed from there. Throughout the late 70's and 80's she worked on albums by Fleetwood Mac, Supertramp, Blondie and many more. In the 90's her career took a different turn as she went into film and television audio post production for Disney, Dreamwork and many other studio sound departments. Now she does it all, music and movies! Engineering and producing! She also is very involved in helping other women make an impact in the business by supporting the Women in Music and SoundGirls organizations. She also has been an active board member and educator at the Audio Engineering Society and is very passionate about audio restoration and preservation. Their stories are of women who have faced disappointment, financial hardships, divorce, being a single parent, lack of support, prison sentences, battles with cancer, and more. They continued to push and achieve their dreams. Their strength? All the things that were meant to deter them only made them stronger. Their stories were written to inspire, educate, and help women rise to shine. Firm believers that women who may think that it's too late or there are too many obstacles to overcome will find strength from their stories, stories about ordinary women, no different from the people that you may know. Their stories explore the lives of women who decided to live outside of the box despite what they were told. These ladies have all faced different obstacles in their hometowns across the United States. Despite their differences, they share several things in common: being passionate, laser-focused, having a strong commitment to build successful businesses, and living a life that they LOVE. Because their stories will ignite a fire in women who are sitting on the sidelines watching others achieve their dreams, you're encouraged to get your copy of She Conquered by visiting Tequila at www.TequilaCousar.com/products-2/.
