This conversation explores the impact of lighting on human health. Kevin Houser, Professor at Oregon State University and Lead Engineer at the Pacifica Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), discusses how circadian lighting and human-centric design influence well-being, the latest research on non-visual responses to light, and the industry's challenge in balancing scientific rigor with practical application. The conversation also addresses the risks of over-quantifying lighting metrics too soon and the need for continued research and adaptation. Two big takeaways: Human-centric lighting is more than a marketing term – It has real implications for well-being, but the industry must be careful not to over-promise or oversimplify its effects. We're still in the early stages of understanding circadian lighting – While there are provisional recommendations for lighting design, ongoing research and practical application will determine how effective these strategies really are. The Key topics are: The evolution of human-centric lighting and its ties to circadian rhythms The science behind non-visual responses to light and their effect on human health The role of the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cell (ipRGC) in regulating circadian rhythms The challenge of applying lab-based research findings to real-world architectural lighting The fine line between scientific accuracy and marketing buzzwords in the lighting industry The future of human-centric lighting, including emerging standards and recommendations The need for continued refinement of provisional lighting guidelines This episode is brought to you by Nightingale Lighting, a brand that designs lighting solutions beyond expectations in healthcare environments. David shares his background in the tech industry, specifically his experience with a company that sold transceivers to major telecommunications firms. This experience highlighted the need for exceptional customer support, leading him to establish Help with a focus on providing human-powered, 24/7 frontline support.David Sohn emphasizes the importance of human interaction in customer service, contrasting it with the often frustrating experiences associated with AI chatbots. He acknowledges the advancements in AI technology but believes that many customers still prefer speaking to a real person. Help's approach is to empower their agents with AI tools that enhance their ability to provide personalized service while maintaining the warmth and empathy that only humans can offer. This balance between technology and human touch is central to Help's philosophy. The discussion also touches on the significance of building trust with customers. David draws parallels between Help's service model and the training practices of renowned companies like Disney and Amazon, which prioritize customer experience. He explains that establishing trust requires setting clear expectations and consistently meeting them. By focusing on the initial customer experience and ensuring that agents are well-trained, Help aims to create a supportive environment that fosters trust and satisfaction. Finally, David shares insights into the training and management structure at Help, highlighting the importance of continuous learning and adaptability. He describes a "learn, do, show" approach to training agents, which encourages hands-on experience and peer teaching. This method not only enhances agent skills but also prepares them for future opportunities in the tech industry. The episode concludes with a reflection on the human-centric nature of Help's business model, reinforcing the idea that at its core, the company is about people and their experiences. Whether you're an executive closing deals, a media professional discovering cutting-edge innovations, or a curious onlooker reading from afar, CES offers an opportunity to explore the tech-driven future.Human-Centric Innovation at Its CoreCES has evolved from a purely consumer electronics show to something much broader. While enterprise solutions now account for nearly 40% of its exhibitors, the focus remains on human-centric innovation. As Brian aptly said, "Humans are not just consumers; they are patients, workers, collaborators, and creators." The technologies at CES aim to enhance our lives in all these roles.Digital health is a prime example of this shift. This year, exhibitors in this category are moving to the Venetian campus alongside smart home, lifestyle tech, and accessibility solutions, highlighting how these technologies are converging to improve health, wellness, and longevity. From wearables that connect to your smart home to smart mirrors that monitor your mood, CES demonstrates how personalized, data-driven ecosystems can redefine daily living. The Evolution of InnovationBrian and I also discussed the nature of innovation, which he breaks down into two categories: evolutionary and revolutionary. CES showcases both. Evolutionary innovation involves incremental advances, like smarter AI chips in TVs that turn entertainment devices into command centers for your smart home or even tools for telehealth. Revolutionary innovation, on the other hand, includes breakthroughs like nuclear fusion and generative AI—transformations that redefine industries overnight. This year, startups are expected to bring some of the most exciting stories. The Eureka Park pavilion will spotlight companies like Standard Energy, which is developing vanadium ion battery tiles for home energy storage, and Senergetics, which uses AI to predict and prevent corrosion in power plant pipes. Another standout is Glidance, an autonomous guide robot for individuals with low vision, showcasing how innovation can serve diverse needs and create new opportunities for accessibility.A Convergence of Ideas and OpportunitiesAt its heart, CES is about connection—not just connecting devices but connecting people and ideas. It's a place where startups meet industry giants, partnerships are forged, and new possibilities are imagined. As Brian highlighted, the show serves as both a showcase and a platform for collaboration, where the seeds of future innovations are planted.Wrapping It UpCES 2025 is more than a trade show—it's a glimpse into the future of our coexistence with technology. As we prepare to dive into the event, one thing is clear: technology is no longer something we simply use. It's a part of who we are and how we live.I'll leave you with this thought: CES isn't just about what's next; it's about how we can work together to make what's next even better.Mark your calendars for January 7-10, and stay tuned for more conversations as Sean Martin and I bring you the latest stories On Location.Subscribe, follow, and let's explore the future together!____________________________This Episode's Sponsors HITRUST: https://itspm.ag/itsphitweb____________________________Catch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-cybersecurity-society-humanity-conference-and-event-coverageWant to tell your Brand Story Briefing as part of our event coverage?Learn More

To redesign not just how we operate together, but to be thoughtful about how different everyone is and bring all that into the redesign.” “People are looking for structured guidance. They're not looking for all the answers. But they're looking for at least that you are thinking through it and that they can try.” “Experimenting and piloting use cases with individuals and teams to see what works for them and finding ways to elevate that across the broader organization and share practices. It's really easy to give people the highlight reel and act like everything is all hunky-dory, but that wouldn't be authentic, and we're all about authentic, so this episode is a bit of the Real Reel about some things Rebecca has been thinking and feeling during a bit of a hard season that a) we'll all resonate with and b) are incredibly wise and things we should all keep in our back pockets. (Remember, Cassidy from our team writes these show notes so this is not Rebecca writing in the third person so she's allowed to call it like it is and tell you that this episode is a Good One.) In this episode, we talk about some things that help keep us grounded and moving in the right direction, especially when things get tricky: Having It All Together is a facade How to offer support, and how not to The importance of joy Why it's important that we share our appreciation Why moving in is often the thing to do when we disagree How to show ourselves the grace and kindness we deserve Why your community needs YOU. This week our host Brandi Starr is joined by Lindsay Tjepkema, Founder of Human Brands Win. Meet Lindsay Tjepkema, a visionary leader reshaping the landscape of human-centric branding and marketing. As the former CEO of Casted, she spearheaded the integration of podcasting and video into effective marketing strategies. Now, through Human Brands Win, she is on a mission to empower brands to prioritize genuine human connections. In this episode of Revenue Rehab, Brandi and Lindsay dive into the transformative power of human-centric marketing. They explore the benefits of shifting away from fear and scarcity mindsets, and delve into practical frameworks like "BRAVE" to enhance daily decision-making. They also discuss the long-term impact of authentic brand building and the critical role of storytelling in developing meaningful customer relationships. Join us to uncover strategies that not only drive revenue but create lasting legacies. Bullet Points of Key Topics + Chapter Markers: Topic #1 Framework and Decision-Making in Marketing [05:12] “Using a specific framework for daily decisions can transform your marketing efforts,” Tjepkema asserts. “It shifts the focus to fostering human connections rather than operating from fear and scarcity. Whether you're posting on social media or writing emails, this approach ensures that human connection remains at the core.” Topic #2 Human Brand as a Differentiator [18:47] “Human connection may not be explicitly listed in RFQs, but it's a critical factor in decision-making through storytelling and empathy,” Tjepkema explains. “Brands that understand and resonate with their customers' stories stand out,” she notes. Brandi Starr agrees, emphasizing that “having an internal favorite or personal connection to a brand significantly influences decision-making.” Topic #3 Impact of Fear and Scarcity on Creativity [27:39] “The prevalent mindset of fear and scarcity is stifling creativity in business and marketing,” Tjepkema warns. “Over-reliance on data and the pressure for short-term ROI-driven decisions hinder relationship-building and long-term strategy.” Brandi Starr recalls, “Earlier in my career, less fear around taking risks allowed for more innovative marketing, similar to how excessive focus on health metrics can negatively impact well-being.” Buzzword Banishment Lindsay's 'One Thing' is to create space for creativity within your team. “As leaders, it's crucial to hold space for creativity in your daily operations. Encourage your team to explore, express, and experiment without the constraints of immediate ROI concerns. Think about ways to foster an environment where innovation isn't stifled by fear and scarcity but nurtured through human connection and trust. This space for creativity is where genuine human brands are born, evolving into relationships that last.” So, What's the One Thing You Can Do Today? Liz's ‘One Thing' is to delve into your metrics to uncover the priorities for your marketing strategy. "Look at your metrics. Those are probably the truest measure of how you're performing. And I would look at things not, I mean revenue growth. That's all important. Those are the obvious ones. But I would take a look at some more granular ones. Trends such as your sales cycle, has it been lengthening or shrinking your win rate? What are the trends going on there? Your win loss intel? Why are you winning? Why are you losing? So I would look at some of those more granular metrics to tell you just how or to signal to you how prioritized should a reworking of your marketing strategy be and whether you need to invest in research now or six months from now or a year from now. I think the metrics are going to give you the answer." B.R.A.V.E. Hey dear friends! In this video, Richard and I dive deep into the evolving worlds of science fiction and fantasy. From Tolkien's carefully restrained magic to today's cosmic horror and existential threats, we explore how modern storytellers like Adrian Tchaikovsky are pushing the boundaries of what it means to be human in a vast, often terrifying universe.
In the early portion of my strategic management consulting work, I'd over-empathize the importance (most of the time to myself) around this “framework” or that “systemic approach” when helping CPG companies achieve their goals. Maybe I can chalk that up as just younger me still being way too close to his business school academia mindset or maybe back then I just wasn't able to “see the forest for the trees.” Because all those spreadsheets filled with data, all those metrics created, and all those strategic plans and recommendations weren't just words/numbers…but human behavior. And it took me a few years, but I've now fully embraced that my business superpower isn't just that “legacy mechanical strategic thinking” but understanding how evolving human needs drive consumer decisions and how those demand drivers can be connected to key aspects commercially impacting different CPG product categories. But others are just wired differently, understanding early that placing humans at the center of every aspect will make the biggest impact within the CPG industry. That's why I was super excited to chat with Josh Wand (founder of ForceBrands and General Partner at The Family Fund) because while we share the same first name, we have diverse perspectives that make for great holistic insights. This conversation was really fun, spanning how human-led (and human-centric) CPG companies are the future, how AI is hurting (and helping) CPG brands, and why every leader needs to be looking at human performance beyond basic productivity metrics (and KPIs). We also talked about the transparency paradox that could be creating an under-the-radar downside risk for CPG brands. Finally, we talked about where the biggest impact can come from long-term with CPG-focused venture capital firms. But these are just some of the interesting topics we chatted about in this episode... Our guests for this episode are David Matenaer and Erik Gabrielson, two of the Co-founders of ProjectWE, a firm that creates customized AI platforms for SMB's.David and Erik have been collaborating on projects for many years, and when they came together to form a partnership around some online education they were developing, they realized it needed to be AI generated. So, they put their launch on hold and went back to the drawing board to utilize Artificial Intelligence in the work they both did (and do) for businesses. Fast forward to now, they are developing customized AI applications for several of their clients, generating a huge impact to their client's work flows, onboarding, sales processes, training, leadership and ongoing employee coaching. In other words, a game changer in efficiency and expense reduction! The simplest way to explain its impact is that it helps solve things at a speed faster than any human could, but needs the context from which to do so. The output will only be as good as the input. If you are clear about the details of where you are now with a certain situation or objective, and just as clear about the ideal outcome, the AI can solve for the middle, so your team can help you get there with a plan, coaching and accountabilities, all generated by your AI database. Erik says AI will not supplant humans, but give them the ability to do more higher level things that impact growth for the business. Every outcome that the AI derives for the user still needs to be tweaked and approved by the user, but the AI can get you to 80-90% completion! Talk about a time saver. There's so much more for all of us to know about the ways AI can be applied, but what's essential is that all of us must learn it and utilize it. This technology won't wait around for laggards.Listen to the episode hereFind David and Erik here Connect with Julie Keyes, Keyestrategies LLCFounder, Consultant, Author, Pod-caster and Instructor
