Riding Shotgun With Charlie #216 Mark Keefe NRA Managing Director of Editorial & Public Affairs Like everyone who has read any of the NRA's magazines or watched American Rifleman, or even seen some shows on The Outdoor Channel or The History Channel, I've seen Mark Keefe for years. Emails between the NRA staff and me while setting up the show with Doug Hamlin (RSWC #213), I saw that Mark was on the email last. I had to ask if he would be available and interested. And he was. I was pleasantly surprised when Mark came out before I interviewed Doug to check and make sure everything was good to go. Mark has been shooting since he was young. His grandfather used to drink beef from a can. When the beer got old, they used to shoot the beer cans with the beer in them while using a BB gun. That's quite a reactive target, for sure! As a young teenager, the family elders decided he was “old enough for the Thompson.” But it was only semi-auto until he was older. He also did some shooting in the Boy Scouts. In 1988, Mark wanted to be a Shooting Sports Director for the Boy Scouts so he could teach rifle, shotgun, and archery. To do this, he had to become an NRA Certified Instructor. In this process, he reconnected with Phil Schreier (RSWC #182). His interest in collecting historical firearms really took off. Mark told me the story about Phil getting a job volunteering at the NRA Museum and telling him that you never know where it will lead and you have to grow up sometime. The following year, Phil ended up offering Mark the weekend work at the Museum saying… you never know where it will lead and you have to grow up sometime. Mark has been there 34 years, and Phil has been there 35 years. After being at the Museum a few years, he started as the assistant technical editor for some of the magazines. He worked through the ranks as associate technical editor, managing editor, and finally editor and he ran American Rifleman for 21 years. In the early 2000's, he was encouraged to start a column so the readers could learn more about the NRA contributors. That was the beginning of The Keefe Report. He still kept reviewing guns, the current issues, and his regular duties. In the late 1990's/early 2000's, the NRA started having the staff and writers get out and gain experience with the firearms they were reviewing. That's when Mark had the chance to travel the world and do some training and hunting. Learning to shoot a rifle at moving game is different from hunting in the United States. These hunting trips and experiences really gave them the chance to experience the usefulness and dependability of the firearms they were using. While using firearms in the field, he began to see why some of the designs of rifles or cocking methods or stocks were built the way they are. It made more sense once they put them to use in real situations. In the early 2000's Mark was on a hunt with people from The Outdoor Channel. They told Mark there really needed to be an American Rifleman TV show. But he didn't have a lot of video experience. He, his staff, and Phil came up with a plan to get the show going and what the content would be. He told me a great story about someone who went back to Europe and was able to find brass from rounds fired by Alvin York! It's an amazing story! Mark's most recent title is the Managing Director of Editorial & Public Affairs. He's got his hands in many things NRA and media related, from The Keefe Report to American Rifleman, but also keeping up with the new trends in social media. Mark is NRA to the core. And a firearm guy through and through. He told me after we were done filming that we didn't even get to any of the hunting stores. I can't wait for those. Favorite quotes: “I think he's probably old enough for the Thompson.” “You can't really slap a rifle trigger, but you can pull it quickly.” “We wanted to take people places they couldn't go.” “We blend the story of the people who used these guns.” “We're involved in things that we just don't get credit for.” National Rifle Association https://home.nra.org/ American Rifleman https://www.americanrifleman.org/ NRA Publications on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@NRApubs NRA Explore/NRA Programs https://explore.nra.org/ NRA Facebook https://www.facebook.com/NRA NRA Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nra/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. Riding Shotgun With Charlie #075 Brooke Cheney A Great Start Shooting School The DC Project I met Brooke Cheney at The DC Project dinner in Washington last summer. Then we ran into each other again in Massachusetts at the Gun Owners Action League Concealed Carry Fashion show back in March. Of course, we kept in touch and with the current times, I needed to stay local for a show. We did use some Leadslingers Hand Sanitizer, thanks for LeadslingersWhiskey.com, and headed out for a drive. Brooke grew up and learned a little about firearms when she was a young girl. Her dad would load up a firearm and have her shoot them. When she was dating her to-be-husband, they would go shooting, and he would load the firearm and have her shoot it. It wasn’t until after she had children, that she really needed to learn about firearms since they were going to be in the house. Like many of us, after we take a safety course, we learn that we have more to learn. She learned that the course to get her license was just the beginning of the journey she was going to be on. She ended up getting into competitive shooting and built a backyard range for practicing. When she looked into insurance for the backyard range, she decided that it was time to become an instructor. In less than a week, she was an NRA Certified Instructor, teaching courses to help women get their Connecticut permits. Brooke shares when she had what she calls her “Wonder Woman Moment”! She realized that she can instruct and help women have their own Wonder Woman Moment to overcome their fears and concerns about firearms and firearm ownership. At A Great Start Shooting School, Brooke offers many courses and opportunities for women to learn and get comfortable using their firearms. Instructing led to a chance to work with A Girl and A Gun and teach at their National Conference. Becoming active with firearms and instructing led to her getting involved politically about gun laws with the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, especially after Newtown since it was so close to her. Her actions have led to her getting involved with Dianna Muller and The DC Project. The DC Project heads to the Capital every year to connect with Congress members, sharing their stories about why gun ownership among women is very important. Back in 2006, you could have never gotten her to believe that she would be doing all of the things she’s doing. Besides competitive shooting, instructing and becoming a Training Counselor, CCDL, AG & AG, & DCP, she also does something on her AGSSS YouTube channel. Its the Suicide Prevention Saturday! Its a live video chat she does on Saturdays at 9 pm/eastern time. She’s put a lot of study into mental health and issues and how it’s related to gun owners and suicides. SPS gives her an outlet to reach out and talk about these issues. We barely had time to bring up SPS because she’s got a lot going on. And she’s still a mom and wife and has to work, too! Favorite Quotes: “You have to become a competitor to learn what you need to learn to get better” “It also built my confidence to realize that it was OK that I sucked” “I tell everyone of my Wonder Woman moment, where I packed my own range bag” “Every step of my career has been an impetus from someone else” “Being a gun owner has made me more confident, it has made me more educated about our political system” A Great Start Shooting School Website https://www.agreatstartshootingschool.com/ Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/agreatstartshootingschool/ YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZAeFAuFzQcPNREbIp8pcyA Team Icarus Shirts (Look Like Brooke!) https://teamicarusshirts.wixsite.com/icarus/brooke?fbclid=IwAR0wYFczP_Vj6NfR5sEyqnFm3wdhP_EAS15wrgBfnJfeoV74w5oeE8jNJuw The DC Project https://www.dcproject.info/ Connecticut Citizens Defense League https://ccdl.us/ A Girl & A Gun https://www.agirlandagun.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. Our guest, Gary Shankweiler is a martial artist and an NRA Certified Instructor with over 50 years of experience with firearms. Keeping politics out of it — whether or not you are a proponent of more gun control laws, the fact is the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." That being the case, if you’re purchasing a gun you MUST take it seriously. Our talk includes the following and more: What to do before you purchase a pistol for self-defense Some factors you should consider before choosing a firearm How to safely and responsibly handle and store firearms in your home For those living in and around the Lehigh Valley area, Gary offers an Introduction to Firearms course as part of HKA’s Streetwise Self-Defense Seminars.

Tiffany Johnson and Aqil Qadir on Widening the 2A Tent. (Diversity and Inclusion in the Firearms Community) David sits down with the lovely, armed and responsibly dangerous Ms. Tiffany Johnson, Esq. of the FrontSightPress blog, and her partner Aqil Qadir of Civilians Safety Academy, to talk about diversity and inclusion in the Second Amendment community. Joined by David's wife for her first-ever podcast appearance, the group discusses how the firearms community is often its own worst enemy in terms of welcoming others to the fold. They also take to task the NRA for its questionable marketing tactics and lack of ownership for past mistakes. Listeners may be interested to learn that many of the United States' gun laws have historically-verifiable racial beginnings. What role did the NRA play in them? Listen and find out. You might be surprised! We can't thank Tiffany and Aqil enough for placing their trust in us to come onto the show and talk about an issue that so many shy away from. We hope that you enjoy the conversation as much as we did. We certainly left with two extraordinary new friends as a result. About Tiffany Johnson: Tiffany is a “late bloomer” who underwent a 180-degree-conversion in the world of firearms. She grew up subscribing to common fears and misconceptions about guns and gun owners. After college, she reluctantly enrolled in a Rangemaster handgun safety course, and she was hooked. In addition to being mentored by Tom and Lynn Givens and other Rangemaster instructors, Tiffany has also trained under Jim Higginbotham, John Farnam, Craig Douglas, Massad Ayoob, Jeff Gonzales, Marshall Luton, and several respected veterans of the self-defense community. She is member of the NRA and the Second Amendment Foundation, and she has earned instructor credentials from the State of Tennessee, the State of Mississippi, the National Rifle Association, Massad Ayoob Group, and Rangemaster (Advanced Instructor Certification). Tiffany is also a lawyer and a teacher, teaching college courses at the University of Memphis where she coordinates their legal studies program. Prior to starting her own business as a freelance legal writer and researcher, she practiced personal injury and civil rights law. About Aqil Qadir: Aqil is the founder and lead instructor of Citizens Safety Academy. His background as a firearms instructor started at age 12, teaching urban youth in his father’s gun club. He followed in his dad’s footsteps, becoming an NRA Certified Instructor at the age of 22. Together they have been teaching Handgun Carry Permit classes since 1993. Aqil has over 20 years of law enforcement experience, and more than half of that time was spent as a police firearms instructor. Since leaving law enforcement, his passion has been teaching responsible citizens how to protect themselves and their families. Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 163, originally published in August 2013. Mark Walters is a nationally syndicated host of Armed American Radio and author of, "Lessons from Unarmed America." He joins the show to discuss the measures taken by Obama to reduce gun violence and if any of them are realistic. Walters has been penning The Ordinary Guy column as a regular contributor to Concealed Carry Magazine for over 5 years. As a freelance writer for a local industrial trade publication and a vocal second amendment activist in Tampa, Florida, Mark's letters and opinions appeared many times in the Tampa Tribune. His book, Lessons From Armed America, co-written with Kathy Jackson ( forward by Massad Ayoob), was released in October 2009 by Whitefeather Press and highlights the stories of those who found found themselves the victims of violent crime and either used a gun or wished they had one when they needed it most, including his own story. In November of 2002 just two weeks after the birth of his daughter Lindsey, Mark found himself the intended victim of an attempted carjacking while approaching a traffic light on E. Fletcher Ave. in the Suitcase City section of Tampa, FL at 6:20 am on his way to work. A well known drug and crime infested area bordering the University of South Florida, Mark passed through the area every day. Luckily on that November morning he was carrying a Glock 36, 45 caliber handgun resting in a Sidearmor Kydex IWB holster. When the criminals… both of them…found themselves unable to get into the vehicle stopped just off of his left bumper, they turned their attention to him. Watching the frightening events unfold in front of him and happening at a frantic pace, Mark un-holstered his weapon and leveled his 45 at the criminal standing just feet away from him and approaching his vehicle. When confronted with a gun pointed directly at his chest, the closest attacker waved off his partner and both men retreated to their vehicle. Fleeing like the cowards they were, Mark was able to make it home alive that day. That frightening experience became the subject of his first column with Concealed Carry Magazine titled “The Importance of Carrying Your Gun 100% of The Time”, now listed as one of Concealed Carry Magazines “Best of”. Since that time, Mark writes about ordinary folks like you and I who have used a weapon to defend themselves as well as interviewing some of the nations biggest news makers and activists. The list includes rock stars, country singers, radio personalities, national and local politicians, TV stars, internationally recognized trainers, weapons experts, criminal psychologists, television hosts, authors, real people who have used a firearm to defend themselves against violent attack and regular, ordinary folks who make a difference.
