It was a powerful and emotional event that brought people together in the fight against cancer and your dedication made a real impact. GBC and Radio Gibraltar were at the Relay for Life this weekend. It was emotional for those of us working, but a real privilege to help heroes, survivors to tell their stories with care, heart and integrity. Shelina Assomul was also covering the event.Jose Mari Ruiz talked sport as Gibraltar are in action again tonight in their 4th world cup qualifier, the second match in this international window after a 7-0 loss to Croatia. He also covered the latest in dressage, Brazilian jiu jitsu, bowling, and women's cricket.The University of Gibraltar's conference ‘Research that Benefits Gibraltar' is in its third edition! It's a chance to highlight the work of PhD Students, Faculty, and Adjunct Researchers. They cover four main topics: marine science, environmental science, health science, and business, management, and law. We spoke to Leon Leanse, University of Gibraltar's Research Programme Coordinator, as well as PHD students Julia Tibot and Tyson Holmes.St. John - the charity for health and first aid in our community. They always have a presence at big local events, including the Relay for Life this last weekend. Matthew Turnock told us how it went, and spoke about the recent visit of Mark Compton, the Lord Prior of the Order of Saint John since 2019. And, we took a deep dive into the ocean as we spoke to Lewis Stagnetto and Alex Soiza of the Nautilus Project on how World Ocean's Day was marked in Gibraltar yesterday. A GBC investigation has found the removal of physical barriers at the frontier – if a treaty is reached – would be limited to the crossing area. Sources suggest critical installations such as the MoD estate, customs zone and airport infrastructure will remain fenced off. The port and airport would be the controlled entry points, with Gibraltar and Schengen checks there. We analysed the report in greater details with our News Editor Christine Vasquez.We also spoke to Police Superintendent Paul Chipolina briefly regarding the potential changes at the frontier. He has a busy few months ahead, with more leisure activities during the summer months as well as preparations for National Day. He shared how the force is preparing for this busier period. Matchday minus one. A World Cup qualifier takes place tomorrow, as Gibraltar host Croatia at the Estadio Algarve in Faro. On Saturday it will be 10 years to the day that we last played Croatia, a friendly that we lost 4-0. Jose Mari Ruiz was at the press conference in Faro.The Citizens Advice Bureau celebrated the contributions of volunteers around Gibraltar. Their annual awards to mark Volunteer Week usually only apply to those who have worked with the Bureau directly. This year - for the first time - the bureau extended its criteria to recognise volunteers from any charity, with five nominees highlighted for their work at an awards ceremony. We spoke to two of the winners Conchita Triay and Jayne Wink.And, plastic pollution permeates every corner of the planet — even in our bodies in the form of microplastics. The science is unsettled, but researchers say there is cause for concern. World Environment Day 2025 calls for collective action to tackle plastic pollution, by drawing inspiration from nature. On Saturday afternoon, four local cyclists made a triumphant return to Gibraltar after completing a gruelling 10-day, 1,200 km ride from Lourdes for charity. The challenge was dedicated to the memory of the late Daphne Alcantara, aiming to promote awareness about the critical importance of early diagnosis of brain tumours. Three of the four cyclists join us in the studio: Jimmy Alcantara, Ian Howes and Glen Ballantine.The Gibraltar General and Clerical Association (GGCA) held an Extraordinary General Meeting where members voiced frustration at not having received a meaningful pay rise since 2019. Our reporter Jonathan Sacramento is reporting on this today.May is Stroke Awareness Month - a time to highlight the realities of strokes, the importance of recovery support, of stroke prevention and what can cause strokes. John Shephard is no stranger to GBC television and Radio Gibraltar for his sports coverage, but today he speaks to us as a stroke survivor and a campaigner for increased awareness.And, June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, a time to celebrate and commemorate the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. What lessons have been learned from the Grenfell tragedy? The Fire Industry Association has grown to become Europe's largest fire protection trade association, with over 1,200 members. Tomorrow, the Sunborn Hotel will be the venue for their annual Fire Safety Summit. The main aim is to enhance competency and promote education within the fire safety sector. We invited the FIA's Chief Executive Officer Ian Moore and Sir Ken Knight, a retired British fire-fighter and public servant, into the studio.It's mental health awareness week. GBC's Nicole Byrne has been involved in an initiative to brighten people's days with small plants. With the help of Greenarc, a support station was set up inviting colleagues to spend some meaningful time with each other, and leave a kind message in exchange for a small succulent. And, Daria Bogacka is a passionate mother, yogini, life coach, and traveller... for nearly 30 years Daria lived with Bulimia. Bulimia is an eating disorder in which a person has regular episodes of eating a very large amount of food (bingeing) during which the person feels a loss of control over their eating. The person then uses different purging methods to prevent weight gain. This evening, she will be speaking at the Gibraltar Yoga Centre on "Holistic Healing of Eating Disorders". Hosted on Acast. Workplaces and individuals are marking "Get Lippy" Day on Friday - a day to raise awareness of gynaecological cancers. UK charity the Eve Appeal asks people to get loud and talk about gynae health. The aim is to start conversations about what is often considered an 'awkward' thing to talk about. Francesca Makey has campaigned to 'Get Lippy' for years now, following her own experience of being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 17. We spoke to her as well as Eloise Leto, a fellow survivor, and Dr. Olivia Gonzalez from the Women's Health Clinic.Today marks the start of Mental Health Awareness week. The theme this year is "Community". For Childline, it's an opportunity for the charity to raise awareness of children's mental health. Jenny Olivero and Caroline Carter explained that young people often use their services for support for bullying, family issues or mental health concerns.It'll be a busy week for Clubhouse Gibraltar also, as they have organised a number of workshops to help people understand good mental health. We spoke to Gianna Da Costa, a staff member at Clubhouse Gibraltar, alongside Brandon Ainsworth and Veena Purswani, both service users of the charity.There's a new look for gbc.gi. The redesigned TV and Radio areas are now simpler to navigate. It's a mobile-first design with enhanced accessibility. And, the news page also has a number of new features making it easier for you to follow the day's stories and helping you stay informed. GBC's CEO James Neish explained the motivation behind the redesign.Louis Parral joined us in the studio once again to fill us in on all the big news in local sport from over the weekend, including a surprise in futsal and the Eagles taking the trophy in men's hockey.And the 2025 Gibraltar International Half Marathon takes place on Sunday! Despite being over 27 years old, developers are still making games for the Game Boy Color - and one such game designer and coder is Shane McCafferty. He has been making games since he was 11, but has taken his side hustle and hobby onto a whole new level, releasing 9 Game Boy Color games on ItchIO in the past 18 months. We find out what it is that compels Shane to make games like Block Droppin, Cave Dave and Word Forward for the Game Boy Color, which projects kept him up at night, and the ones he's most proud of. We also discuss his current project to make a 'What If?' version of OutRun for the GBC.

Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Major renovations planned for Gas South Arena The Gas South Arena in Gwinnett County is set for a major renovation after 23 years of operation. Plans include updates to seating, concourses, and the front plaza, along with improved food and beverage services, modernized bathrooms, and enhanced security features. Premium loge seating will be added, reflecting industry trends. The upgrades aim to boost customer experience and maintain the arena’s economic impact, which has exceeded $1 billion over the past decade. Renovations will occur in phases over two years, allowing events to continue uninterrupted. Final designs and funding details are still being determined. STORY 2: RangeWater Real Estate Partners with the City of Lilburn to Expand Old Town with New Housing The expansion of Old Town Lilburn continues as RangeWater Real Estate acquires 4 acres near Lilburn City Park and Camp Creek Greenway Trail to develop 269 rental residences. Partnering with TMGRI, the project aims to enhance the area’s walkability and charm, aligning with the city’s vision for a dynamic downtown. Breaking ground in March or April, the $75 million investment is expected to be completed by late 2026, bringing new housing, retail, restaurants, and job opportunities. Mayor Johnny Crist praised the transformative development, which includes a public/private parking deck and proximity to major job hubs. STORY 3: Georgia Banking Company Completes Merger With Primary Bankshares Georgia Banking Company (GBC) and Georgia Primary Bank have completed their merger, effective March 1, creating a combined organization with $2.43 billion in assets and $2 billion in deposits. The merger strengthens GBC’s presence in metro Atlanta, adding branches in Fulton and Forsyth Counties. GBC CEO Bartow Morgan, Jr. highlighted the merger’s potential to enhance customer service and financial solutions, while PBC CEO David Coxon emphasized expanded product offerings and growth opportunities. Coxon will now serve as EVP and Director of Community and Small Business Banking. The merger positions GBC as a top three deposit market share holder in Atlanta. We’ll be right back Break 2: STORY 4: Police: Burglary suspect took a shower before stealing property Gwinnett County police are searching for a burglary suspect who took a shower before stealing items from a Lawrenceville home on Feb. 5. The man, described as an older white male with a slender build and a tattoo on his upper right arm, entered through an unlocked door around 4:40 a.m. He left with a house key, a lighter, and a folding knife after being confronted by the homeowner. Security camera images have been released, and tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers for a potential cash reward. STORY 5: Gwinnett County Police Foundation Donates $15K To Special Olympics Georgia The Gwinnett County Police Foundation donated $15,000 to Special Olympics Georgia, supporting over 100 athletes in this year’s events. The funds were raised during the Peach State Motorcycle Rodeo, hosted by the Gwinnett County Police Motors Unit last September. The rodeo featured officers competing in challenging motorcycle courses. The 2025 State Summer Games will take place May 16-18 at Emory University.
