If you have been listening to my show for a while now, you may be familiar with today's guest. Shannan Martin joined me back in 2015 on Episode #45 to share about her family's life and mission. Today we talk about a number of things, including the practice of waking up and how Shannan defines ‘neighbor,' plus systematic injustice and the black squares that everyone posted on social media in 2020. Shannan is the author of The Ministry of Ordinary Places, Falling Tree, and her newest book, Start With Hello, which releases October 11. Connecting with neighbors in intentional ways is something that screams “Shannan and Corey Martin.” Shannan says Start With Hello started in her family's neighborhood as she found her heart gravitating toward connecting with the people around her, especially people who don't look like her. Shannan says her calling is to live as a neighbor, which she defines as anyone who her life intersects with. Everything she knows about living as a neighbor she said she learned from her neighbors. We can love our neighbors like Shannan by being intentional, starting with hello. Connect with JamieFacebook // Instagram // YouTubeGET ALL THE LINKS FROM THE SHOW HERE
The Celtic Christian tradition has a term for those spaces where we easily encounter God's presence. They call these moments thin places. But is it possible to experience God's presence when there are dishes to be washed, decisions to be made, planning to be done, emails to be sent? Yes - if we will pay attention. Here is a practice to help you do just that. Listen in. Can a book change your life? Today I'm answering that question with my good friend, Shannan Martin. Shannan is a speaker and writer who found her voice in the country and her story in the city. Shannan, her jail-chaplain husband, Cory, and their kids, live as grateful neighbors in Goshen, Indiana. She's also one of my favorite teachers who is constantly nudging me to follow God more fully and pursue Jesus and justice in real, tangible ways. But as you might remember me mentioning a few episodes back, when I recommended her Instagram account as my not-so-guilty-pleasure, she also points me to hope, tells me about the cutest things I can find at Dollar General, and shares my love for chips and queso. And today we're bringing all of those things to the table (or the couch, as the case may be) as we share some of the books that have changed our hearts and our lives over the years. Of course, because this is The Couch, where rabbit trails and side notes are always welcome, we also get into quite a few TV shows, a spinach artichoke dip from ALDI, and the merits of one Will Arnett. This might just be one of my favorite episodes yet, and I know you're going to love it too. Let's get to it! MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Tattoos on the Heart by Gregory Boyle The Hole in Our Gospel by Richard Stearns (this one is just $1.99 on Kindle) Never Change by Elizabeth Berg Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist (and also Bittersweet) Interrupted by Jen Hatmaker Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson (this is the young adult adaptation I read) How the Word is Passed by Clint Smith Harry Potter & the Sorceror's Stone by J.K. As we begin a New Year, leaders often focus on vision--vision for the church, vision for a ministry, vision for launching something new. But did you realize that vision isn't necessarily about big ideas and lots of people? We each need vision in for the ordinary places where we encounter people whom we influence--our children, families, friends, co-workers, neighbors and broader community. In this podcast I talk about that kind of vision that everyone needs to discover. You can access the video if you prefer.
Shannan had it all: dream home, comfortable paycheck, & a tight-knit Christian community, but God challenged her to exchange it all for something more abundant. Her family moved to "the wrong side of the tracks." She's learning everyday what it means to love your neighbor. Tune in to hear about re-defining the American Dream & how learning to love people who are different than us might completely change our views. “This is not something we can agree to disagree on.” 2020 has certainly been a year of political discourse and often-times heated conversations with our friends and family members. There are a lot of topics that we don't all see eye to eye on, but we can't always settle on agreeing to disagree if the topic has a direct impact on our own family. That's what I learned from Lindsay as we continued the conversation on interracial adoption and foster care today on the show. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) While foster care and adoption are beautiful experiences, there are obviously plenty of complications and messy experiences that come along for the ride. Lindsay is never hesitant to be open and honest about those, and it's something I appreciate so much about her because it has given me a much more realistic picture of what diving into the world of orphan care looks like! Whether you're interested in parenting through one of these methods or not, you're going to learn lot today. Lindsay will teach us about what it truly looks like to care for the marginalized and the vulnerable and those in need. This is something that I personally think her and her husband, Gabe, do a wonderful job at - you could say they put their money where their mouths are in this way. In Part 1, Lindsay and I chatted about the special story of how their most newly adopted son, Leo, joined their family and the decision process that led them to pursuing a private, domestic adoption. Today, Lindsay and I are picking up where we left off and chatting about what she has learned surrounding parenting children of different races than her own. We talked about this back on the first episode we recorded in 2018, but her kiddos were just toddlers then and so I wanted to know what it's like now with older kids and with the influence of all the events that have taken place in 2020. We also talk about what it's like for Lindsay to look back on the foster care experiences she shared about in that original episode - if she still feels the same way and if her and Gabe would consider doing foster care again in the future. This conversation isn't just for parents - you're going to get something out of it no matter where you sit in life. I'm honored to carry Lindsay's story and to share it with all of you, and I'm even more honored to be the exclusive podcast featuring the one and only Lindsay! We are living in a time where so much about our lives has changed, paused, or been taken away... but God hasn't been taken away from us. In fact, he might be calling us to lean into his presence more than ever. If your relationship with God has felt out of wack because your rhythms of church and work and recreation have been thrown off, we want to show you how he can still be “your portion” as the psalmists call him. Here are some unexpected, ordinary places that we are finding God to be present with us.
Shannan Martin - This week we heard from author Shannan Martin on the power of living close to the ground and close to our neighbors, following Jesus by loving the people and places in our ordinary, every day lives. She closed our gatherings with this moving benediction: May you go out into this cold day warmed by the fire in your own bones.May you come to see walking shoes, soup spoons, mini vans, and wrinkled hands as worthy tools for the kingdom.May you crave low places—the messy, the boring, the overlooked, the complicated.May you grow comfortable with grit in your teeth.May you see God’s presence in the moon, God’s glory in the clouds, and God’s goodness in the faces around you.And may you find your shelter in the untamable garden of community, God’s kingdom on earth, right where you are planted.Grace and peace be with you. ----- If you’re a part of the growing digital SBCC community, we’d love to hear from you! Today’s episode of “Worth Your Time” is a real treat. I was honored when writer Shannan Martin agreed to speak with me, after becoming a HUGE fan of her writing. Her two books — both incredible and worth buying — are “Falling Free: Rescued From the Life I Always Wanted” and “The Ministry of Ordinary Places” will convict you to your core the moment you crack them open. Shannan’s story of building the life she wanted, complete with monetary security, good jobs, a great home, neighborhood and friends was turned upside down when she her husband Corey tuned into God’s call on their lives. Shannan says: It’s worth looking at the world through the lens of Jesus, that we can see beauty in hard places and we can see interruptions as our redemption. They did a 180, moving to a place they never expected with their three children and striking up relationships with the most unlikely folks. They also ended up adopting their 4th child, a 19-year-old named Robert who brought unexpected blessing and joy to their new lives. Shannan’s life is one example of how we can live a bit more like Jesus did here on earth. It’s a life that includes less money, lots of interruptions, reams of grace, humility you never thought you could muster and a true dependence on God for whatever may come with each day. I was just as inspired and moved by hearing her in real life as I have been reading the words in her books. She’s got plenty to teach us all, but you can tell she doesn’t hold herself in any kind of high regard. She’s just listening to God and trying to love the people around her. It really is that simple. “We don’t need to hustle to prove something God already says is true.” I can’t stop thinking about this quote, ever since I read it in Rebekah Lyon’s book, Rhythms of Renewal. If we’re gut honest, how often are we working so hard in an effort to try to impress someone else, earn someone’s approval, or prove something to ourselves or others? Jesus came so we can stop striving and instead rest in the beautiful truth that we are enough in Him. We don’t have to do more, be more, try harder, do better, and hustle like crazy to win His favor. In Christ, we are pre-approved. There’s rest and freedom at the foot of the Cross! I was so honored to get to sit down and record a podcast episode with Rebekah Lyons recently on what it looks like to live from a place of renewal and rest instead of from a place of stress. We talked about the 4 rhythms everyone needs to have in their life, how easy it can be to incorporate them, and how much of a difference they can make. She also shared about their recent adoption and how this “holy interruption” has beautiful impacted their life in ways she couldn’t dream or imagine. If you struggle with feeling overwhelmed, constantly stressed, and/or always needing to try to rightly control every situation in your life, don’t miss this week’s podcast episode. In This Episode: [01:18] Rebekah shares a bit about herself, her story, and how her new daughter has dramatically changed her life and work. [04:21] Listen as Rebekah and I share the books we’re reading. [07:54] Hear why Joy, Rebekah’s new daughter, is saving her life. [14:13] What’s saving my life? My gratitude journal! [15:36] Rebekah and I dive into what inspired her to write her newest book. [21:17] Learn the four rhythms we should focus on in our lives and in what order. [25:12] View this book as an “undo” type of book. It’s not meant to add to your plate but to clear it. [26:45] Practice the rhythms by doing small things every day. Have we got a treat for you! Today's show is all about Shannan Martin, author of The Ministry of Ordinary Places and Fallen Free. Shannan is our special guest at our upcoming event in July, but we thought we'd all get to know her a little better on this episode of the Spoken Freely podcast. We dish about dessert, coffee vs. tea, her love of a good book and other favorite things about being a homebody. She shares about her path from the country to the city and emphasizes the importance of physical proximity to people so we can love like a neighbor. We love how she shares about having open hands so that God can drop things into our hands and take things out. Shannan reveals that we learn what's important about the culture of our place when we slow down and pay attention to our surroundings. We promise you will take away so many good nuggets from our conversation today, you might even listen a second time! Interested in attending the event with Shannan Martin in Indianapolis? You can find out more information and purchase your tickets at www.spokenfreely.org/event! We hope to see you there!
Shannan Martin is wife to Cory, the chaplain at their county jail, and mama to 4 adopted kiddos. She is also an author of two amazing books, "Falling Free" and "The Ministry of Ordinary Places". She is a passionate follower of Christ who desires to equip believers to better serve the Lord by loving well the people around them. What we Chat about in This Episode: ~Shannan's books ~Her journey and their family's life story (as touched on in Falling Free!) of going from living a simple, safe, and peaceful life on a picturesque, sprawling farm to choosing to move to a lower income part of the city in order to enter into the lives of others with the light and love of Christ ~The importance of loving our neighbor and also being loved by our neighbor ~What day-to-day life looks like now in the Martin's new town (as shared in The Ministry of Ordinary Places) ~What it looks like to draw near to people who don't look, believe, or live like us (just as Christ did!) ~Slowing down to notice the people around us; the importance of the ministry at our finger tips right here and right now ~Shannan having her perspective changed on whether or not our aim in life ought to be to live safe, secure, comfortable, "common sense" lives ~Prejudices and wrong ways of thinking Shannan had to get past in order to live this new life of being a good and intentional neighbor to people who are very different from her ~The problem of living blindly under a bubble, insulated by people who are only just like us ~The reality that we are all actually not that different from one another after all - we are all image bearers of God who want to belong and be loved and trusted ~Tackling the dark, quiet places inside of us and coming face to face with wrong, judgmental viewpoints we harbor towards others ~How to start this new lifestyle of being a good neighbor to others and seeing people as Christ sees them ~The importance of learning and listening to other people's stories; the impact this can have on our hearts and views of others ~Shifting our perspective from "What?" to "Why?" ~Leveling the playing field by humbly dismantling the myth that we commit "ok" sins, while others commit far worse sins ~Our journeys out of legalism and judgementalism; Christ's disdain for legalistic Pharisaicalism; the damage it does to the kingdom ~God rescuing Shannan from the life she always wanted ~What to say to others who are accusing us of living unwise or unsafe lives ~Surrendering the idols of people-pleasing and the approval of others ~The reality that "living the American dream with a side of Jesus" is not Biblical Christianity ~Living with surrendered, open hands ~The importance of acknowledging our need for and dependance on Christ ~Our unfortunate practice of regularly parroting familiar Christian phrases from a place of theory rather than practice ~Entering into the pain of others as Christ did ~The significance of suffering ~And more! Why do opportunities to serve God and others never seem to come along when I don’t feel prepared, adequate, or even capable of responding? Why can’t God’s call come in a way that doesn’t feel so much like an interruption to my plans? And, let’s be honest, what if I just simply don’t want to get involved in what God is calling me to? These are the questions and frustrations that Jamie, Mike, and Kevin work through in this episode. Shannan Martin, author of Falling Free and The Ministry of Ordinary Places, joins us this week to talk about being a good neighbor, paying attention as a ministry, adoption, redefining success, and even the enneagram!
My guest for episode 4 is Shannan Martin, author of “The Ministry of Ordinary Places,” and MAN does she have a lot of wisdom to share! She talks about her journey of moving her family to a neighborhood on the “wrong side of the tracks,” so to speak, and how God turned her idea of community upside down in the best way. We talk about sharing life with people who come from different backgrounds, who carry heartbreaking struggles and who are beautifully made in the image of God. End the end, Shannan encourages us to 1. Ask God to see our place and the people around us the way He sees them. 2. Pay attention to what God’s already doing and choose to be a part of it. I adore this conversation, and I know you will too! Follow Shannan on her website, shannanmartinwrites.com, and on social media.
My guest for The Happy Hour # 227 is Rachel Joy. Rachel is a pastor's wife, mom to four and the Founder & Executive Director of Sparrow Women. Sparrow Women exists to catalyze the next generation of reconcilers. Rachel is a believer in strong coffee, long dinners, and spontaneous dance parties. On today's show Rachel shares the story of how she came to start Sparrow Women and the Sparrow Conference. Rachel and I talk about what it was like for her when she first started to dig deep and ask questions about racial equality, reflect on her own privilege, and examine how the world is truly set up. I love how Rachel says we are all Kingdom Cultivators, but to do the work, we must first understand what God's kingdom is. Rachel and I discuss how the topic of racial harmony and reconciliation can seem overwhelming at first, and she provides some first steps to take. Rachel also honestly shares how the walk can be messy, the conversations difficult, and we're not promised that it will be easy. But, we are called to be peacemakers and reconcilers, and with Christ, it is possible. {You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour by subscribing through your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Stitcher). Other than my interviews with Jesse, this was my very first interview to do in-person -- with Myquillyn Smith (aka The Nester) sitting right across the table from me as we recorded. I loved getting to chat with her face-to-face and be inspired by her heart for creating a cozy and inviting home that serves your family well. Myquillyn and I talk about the importance of making your home into a place that fits the way you’re called to use it, and she offers practical advice for women who may feel intimidated or insecure about decorating. If you’ve ever wanted your home to be a cozy, welcoming place, but aren’t sure where to start, you don't want to miss this episode! (And while I'm not much of a decorator at all -- as I talk about on this episode! -- I surprised myself by truly being inspired by her book. Listen in as I share more on that!) I also give you some last-minute tips for simplifying December, tell you one of our favorite Christmas traditions when our kids were younger, and share some of our favorite Christmas read-alouds for younger kids. And I close out the show by sharing some encouragement from my heart to moms of littles. If you currently have babies, toddlers, or younger kids and maybe feel a little overwhelmed by this season of life, I hope that my words will inspire you and help you feel less alone! In This Episode: [01:34] - Our Christmas Bucket List is what's saving my life this week! This simple practice makes our Decembers so much simpler, calmer, and fun-filled. [06:54] - Instead of just one book, this week I tell you about some of our family's favorite Christmas picture books. [07:50] - Today's guest is Myquillyn Smith -- a woman who is well known on the internet for encouraging people to love their homes and that "it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful". [10:16] - I asked Myquillyn to share advice for women who have insecurities or fears when it comes to decorating their homes (because this is 100% me -- I was even insecure about having Myquillyn come to my home and had to talk myself out of that before she got there!) [15:17] - One of the things I often hear from women is that they wish they could redecorate or change some things in their home but they are on a really tight budget. We talk about this and Myquillyn shares some of her best tips for loving your home and making it cozy and welcoming -- on a tight budget. [17:45] - We talk about what it's like to be an introvert and how to step out and do scary things in spite of our fears. Myquillin addresses my question on how she has managed to invite 1000 people to her home for a festival and go on book tour. She shares how it's been for her and why she chose to do this, even though she knew it would be a lot. [21:58] - Myquillyn shares three books she's planning to read soon -- two of which have been on my radar screen and that I promptly ordered after she talked about them! [23:04] - And we talk about none other than baths. Yes, for real! You'll have to tune in to find out why! :) [24:45] - Many listeners have written in to ask about my advice for a first-time mom. I share some of my best advice and encouragement -- that I wish I would have learned early on! Links and Resources: Twigby (this episode’s amazing sponsor!) Shannan just launched her newest book “The Ministry of Ordinary Places” and encourages readers to be present and intentional in ordinary ways to better love the people around you. So often we can get overwhelmed with wanting to do "big"things for God and discouraged when we feel like we're bogged down in everyday life. Well, Shannan Martin is here to turn that notion of "big" on its head. True meaning in life is made up of living lives intertwined with the regular people in these everyday lives, as Jesus did. This beautifully gifted writer will inspire you to look at your community in perhaps a different lens and leave you excited about looking out your front door today. Her book, The Ministry of Ordinary Places, will challenge and inspire you in the best of ways. My guest for The Happy Hour #218 is Myquillyn Smith. Myquillyn, also known as the “The Nester,” has been encouraging women to embrace their home—imperfections and all. Her home has been featured in Better Homes & Gardens, Cottages & Bungalows and Ladies’ Home Journal. She’s the author of The Nesting Place and was chosen by Christianity Today as one of the top twenty creatives in 2016. Myquillyn lives in a fixer-upper on 12 acres with her husband Chad, their three teenage boys, two cats, a dog and a rooster. Friends, it's time to get cozy! Myquillyn and I start off the show discussing imperfect hospitality, and how we get so stuck on our homes being "perfect", that we never even invite anyone in. Myquillyn sums it up so well when she says if we instead "set up our houses to foster connection, perfection isn't even part of the story." Myquillyn then shares how she started inviting hundreds of people to her home through Nest Fest - even though she's an introvert! We also talk about saying 'no' at the right time. Myquillyn suggests finding a "no" mentor to help us see what it looks like to say "no", so that we can say "yes" to others. In the last part of the show, Myquillyn tells us how moving so much (13 times!) taught her so much about design. Money, time, creativity, and limitations are the most common barriers she hears from women. But, instead of waiting until we have it all, she says, focus on what you have the most of, and go for it! Friends, I just loved my conversation with Myquillyn. I hope you feel encouraged that your home doesn't have to be "perfect", but that it's the imperfect hospitality that brings people together. And you guys, I had never thought of having a "no" mentor before, but I love the perspective that can bring! {You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour, subscribe using your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Google Play). Today I'm soooo excited for you to get to know Shannan Martin. Shannan is one of my faves. She's wise and fun and I just love the way she's living her life. She's got a new book out, The Ministry of Ordinary Places, and we talk about what led her to move from her dream farmhouse in the country to a life in the city. She shares about adopting four kids, including a 19-year-old son who was incarcerated, putting her kids into a "failing" public school with one of the highest poverty rates in the state, and what she's learning with a son who has been incarcerated about the school to prison pipeline. We chat about standing with our neighbors, how to be a good neighbor, and what it looks like to make yourself available and show up for them. Whether you live in the country, the city, or the suburbs like me, there's good stuff here for all of us, unless you live in a yurt on a mountain by yourself...no, even you, yurt-dweller. There's something here for you, too, so listen in, and lighten up. Quotes from the show: "People say we need to bring God back in the schools. God is just already there." "Don't let fear of the unknown hold you back from getting a clear vision of what the kingdom of God looks like." When we’re kids, we each think about the lives we want when we’re older. What if you worked hard for years to make that dream—a loving husband, doting children, a farmhouse with a literal white-picket fence—a reality? And then, all of a sudden, you’re picking the shards of your realized childhood dream off the ground? That’s what happened to Shannan Martin—and she couldn’t be more thankful. Shannan is a writer and speaker from Goshen, Indiana, who is one of Jen’s literal favorite people. Today we’ll hear how Shannan found her voice in the country and her story in the city, and about her new book The Ministry of Ordinary Places. We’ll learn how she and her jail-chaplain husband Cory found their four children, including one who was a nineteen-year-old father of twins when he came to them, and how Shannan and Cory have learned to parent each of their adopted children. We’ll talk about how to become good neighbors with people who come from different walks of life, whose path to the present doesn’t resemble ours at all, and why sometimes staying in a place you don’t feel completely comfortable in can be one of the bravest things you can do.
Shannan Martin, author of The Ministry of Ordinary Places: Waking Up to God’s Goodness Around You and Falling Free: Rescued from the Life I Always Wanted, is a speaker and writer who found her voice in the country and her story in the city. She and her jail-chaplain husband, Cory, have four funny children who came to them across oceans and rivers. They live as grateful neighbors in Goshen, Indiana. A number of listeners reached out to us suggesting Shannan as a guest within a week of each other, and honestly we are surprised we had not crossed paths before. Her story parallels ours in many ways, and we were so encouraged to hear how it could look a few years down the road. Over the course of this episode, you'll hear us make a new friend! This conversation with author Shannan Martin has been rolling through my head since we spoke last week. What does it really look like to love our neighbors? To be a part of where we live? To make our neighborhoods better by living gospel lives in our homes and streets and grocery stores? Shannan does it. And I'm learning so much from her. Her new book The Ministry of Ordinary Places, is a great peek into her life and some ways she has seen God and heard Him and been asked by Him to love the people she lives with. (It's beautiful.) . . . . . This is the last week that my new book Remember God will be available for pre-order! All the details (and how to get a free audiobook!) are on http://anniefdowns.com . . . . . #thatsoundsfunpodcast ... join in the conversation wherever hashtags are welcome. :)
