In this episode, I'm joined by Shannon Martin to talk about her new book Counterweights and how we keep moving forward when life feels overwhelmingly heavy. We explore grief, collective trauma, and why quick fixes and toxic positivity fall short, alongside the small, ordinary practices that help us stay grounded and human. This conversation moves through faith, paradox, community, and the kingdom of God, not as something we wait for, but something we practice together here and now. If you're carrying more than you know what to do with and looking for a way to remain present, honest, and hopeful, this conversation is for you.Shannan Martin is the bestselling author of several books, including Start with Hello, The Ministry of Ordinary Places, and the popular Substack The Soup. Light In Ordinary Places-Jean Burger(Sir Lowry's Pass) by GraceLife Podcast
We trace the story of Jesus' presentation in the temple and ask where light can be found when the world feels dark. Simeon, Anna, and Miep Gies show how ordinary people carry hope that grows from small, faithful acts into a bright, shared flame.
In this message, Sam turns to Exodus 3 and 1 Samuel 3 to explore how God reveals Himself—not in spectacle, but in obscurity. Moses encounters holy fire in a desolate wilderness. Generations later, Samuel hears the voice of God in the quiet of the night, at a time when "the word of the Lord was rare." In both moments, heaven breaks in—but only the attentive recognize it. Moses is tending sheep in disappointment. Samuel is a young boy learning to discern a voice he does not yet understand. Neither setting feels dramatic. Both become holy. The turning point in each story is attentiveness. Moses says, "I must turn aside and see." Samuel responds, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." Curiosity becomes the doorway to encounter. Attention becomes the birthplace of worship. This teaching invites us to adopt the pace of Jesus—slow, responsive to the Father, led by the Spirit. Holy ground is not found by striving, but by noticing. God still hides holy fire in ordinary places. The question is not whether He is speaking. The question is whether we are listening.
It’s easy to notice God’s love on monumental days, but what about the quiet, repetitive moments of life? From dishes to diaper changes, the daily grind can feel invisible—but God’s love never is. Psalm 136:1 reminds us that His love endures forever, not just on the big days, but in the ordinary ones too. Intersecting Faith & Life How can you notice God’s love in the ordinary moments of your day? What daily routines might become opportunities to experience His presence more deeply? How can small reminders—nature, relationships, or Scripture—help you thank God for His enduring love? Do you want to listen ad-free? His love endures forever.” - Psalm 136:1 No one saw me most days. After my first child was born, I quit my teaching job and decided to stay home. Within four-and-a-half years, I had three little ones. Raising children at home is still a lot of work, but many days I wondered if anyone noticed all of the little, ordinary things I did. Things like the dishes, planning meals, cleaning up toys, and the endless piles of laundry. As a young college girl, I had dreamed of doing great things for God, but I also wanted motherhood. Could motherhood be grand and glorious? During that season, I leaned into the idea that the ordinary, everyday moments could be glorious. Within the regular rhythms of my life, I began to seek God in His word. I took online classes on how to study the Bible, even earning a degree. As I raised my children, loving them in the daily routine of life, I began to also see that God’s love for me was the same. In order for God to love me more, I thought maybe I had to do more. Instead, God’s love meets us right where we are - in the quiet, ordinary, everyday life. In a way, God has shown His love in the most extraordinary way—through the cross. Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension to heaven have sealed our eternity and given us new lives and purposes here on earth. It is truly a magnificent source of comfort when we think about this powerful example of God’s love. But when life feels quiet, repetitive, or unremarkable, we may wonder, “Where is God’s love now?” In Psalm 23:6, David says that God’s loving mercy will follow him “all the days of my life.” Not just the grand days, but the daily grind as well. Not just the milestones, but the quiet mornings filled with routine. During our responsibilities and routines, God’s love quietly and completely follows us. The word “follow” suggests activity, not passivity. God’s love is present, and it pursues us! Psalm 55 reminds us that no one seeks God, but God seeks us! His love also follows close by us. It is not a distant love or occasional love. It walks with us, holds our hand, and never leaves. The idea of God’s love walking with us is found in other Bible verses as well. In Micah 6:8, we read, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good and what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” God is calling everyone to walk with Him, in His love! The Bible often describes faith not as a leap, but as a walk. As we walk with God and in His love, we are constantly moving, changing, and going. God’s love consistency shows us for us - no matter the season or life circumstance. You can’t walk through anything in this life without God’s love. Step by step, day by day, God’s love can be experienced over and over again. Psalm 136:1 says, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.” God’s love is enduring. Forever! As a new mom, I would always have to refill my children’s juice cups. Over time, I realized that my spiritual cup was constantly running dry as well. It was during those moments when I felt weak, tired, and empty that I needed God’s love to fill me up! His love has no end. Unlike human love, which can grow tired or fade under pressure, God’s love is full and everlasting. God’s love is available on days we feel empty and have nothing to give. When sorrow fills our hearts, we can run to the God of love. You and I can come to God on ordinary days, weary days, and dark days. All of God’s love is always available. Each day gives us a fresh reminder of His love for us. We are not asked to endure our sorrow with yesterday's strength or tomorrow’s hope; God’s love supplies what we need for today. Intersecting Faith & Life: Our lives are filled with mundane moments. How can you remember God’s love each day? It is often a quiet, soft love. Look for moments like a beautiful sky or the bright sunshine. Maybe you have a pet or a friend who is constantly checking in on you. Let those reminders be there to help you thank God for His love for you. Scripture is a great place to be reminded of God’s love. Take the additional reading section and read a few verses each day this week to help yourself be reminded of God’s extraordinary love in the ordinary moments. This Sunday we will explore how joy enters ordinary and unexpected places through the stories of shepherds and Joseph. The shepherds experience sudden, loud joy when angels announce Christ's birth in their fields, demonstrating that joy doesn't wait for perfect conditions or qualified people. Joseph's experience reveals a different kind of joy: slow, quiet, emerging through confusion and obedience. Both journeys lead to the same Savior. The gathered church hears the good news of great joy, then scatters to carry that joy into workplaces, homes, and neighborhoods. Joy finds us in ordinary places because Christ meets us where we are.
This week Pastor John Starke preaches from Matthew 2:19-23, concluding our Advent sermon series "Home For Christmas".
The Christmas story is filled with familiar moments and unexpected settings. In this message, we're invited to look again at the places we often overlook and consider how God works powerfully through what seems ordinary. Sometimes the most meaningful transformation begins right where we already are.
What if God's greatest work doesn't start in the spotlight, but in the places we overlook? In Week 1 of our Christmas series His Name Shall Be Called, Deniel Sewell unpacks the story of Mary and shows how the Mighty God steps into the ordinary, the quiet, and even the forgotten parts of our lives. From Nazareth to your everyday routine, God's power isn't limited by your weakness — and His presence is closer than you think. If you've ever wondered whether your life is too small for God to care about, this message will remind you that He sees you, He's with you, and nothing is impossible with Him.

What if the things you don't have are exactly what God wants to use? In this powerful conversation, Tauren Wells joins The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast to share the story behind his new book Joy Bomb: Unleashing Jesus's Explosive Joy for an Extraordinary Life. Together with host Ginny Yurich, Tauren unpacks the deeper meaning of the Beatitudes—revealing how Jesus' first sermon wasn't just a list of virtues but a radical invitation to joy for the overlooked, the grieving, the struggling, and the spiritually empty. They explore how our culture's obsession with curated happiness leaves us chasing a version of joy that never satisfies. Instead, Tauren offers a bold reframing: lack, mourning, and hardship aren't roadblocks—they're invitations into a deeper, more explosive joy. With stories from his own life, parenting insights, and biblical truth, this episode will challenge everything you thought you knew about what it means to live a blessed life. ** Get your copy of Joy Bomb here Learn more about Tauren and all he has to offer here Learn more about your ad choices. In the final chapter of John, the disciples return to their ordinary lives, settling back into routine despite the miraculous events they witnessed just months earlier. Yet, in a powerful moment, Jesus appears to remind them of his unwavering presence and provision. How often do we as believers lose sight of God in the busyness of our daily routines? In this sermon, Pastor Ulysses challenges us to recognize that even in the mundane, God is actively present, calling us to align our lives with His mission.
As you listen to this message, we pray it will feed your faith, and encourage you to trust God with all your heart.

If you have been listening to my show for a while now, you may be familiar with today's guest. Shannan Martin joined me back in 2015 on Episode #45 to share about her family's life and mission. Today we talk about a number of things, including the practice of waking up and how Shannan defines ‘neighbor,' plus systematic injustice and the black squares that everyone posted on social media in 2020. Shannan is the author of The Ministry of Ordinary Places, Falling Tree, and her newest book, Start With Hello, which releases October 11. Connecting with neighbors in intentional ways is something that screams “Shannan and Corey Martin.” Shannan says Start With Hello started in her family's neighborhood as she found her heart gravitating toward connecting with the people around her, especially people who don't look like her. Shannan says her calling is to live as a neighbor, which she defines as anyone who her life intersects with. Everything she knows about living as a neighbor she said she learned from her neighbors. We can love our neighbors like Shannan by being intentional, starting with hello. Connect with JamieFacebook // Instagram // YouTubeGET ALL THE LINKS FROM THE SHOW HERE
The Celtic Christian tradition has a term for those spaces where we easily encounter God's presence. They call these moments thin places. But is it possible to experience God's presence when there are dishes to be washed, decisions to be made, planning to be done, emails to be sent? Yes - if we will pay attention. Here is a practice to help you do just that. Listen in. Can a book change your life? Today I'm answering that question with my good friend, Shannan Martin. Shannan is a speaker and writer who found her voice in the country and her story in the city. Shannan, her jail-chaplain husband, Cory, and their kids, live as grateful neighbors in Goshen, Indiana. She's also one of my favorite teachers who is constantly nudging me to follow God more fully and pursue Jesus and justice in real, tangible ways. But as you might remember me mentioning a few episodes back, when I recommended her Instagram account as my not-so-guilty-pleasure, she also points me to hope, tells me about the cutest things I can find at Dollar General, and shares my love for chips and queso. And today we're bringing all of those things to the table (or the couch, as the case may be) as we share some of the books that have changed our hearts and our lives over the years. Of course, because this is The Couch, where rabbit trails and side notes are always welcome, we also get into quite a few TV shows, a spinach artichoke dip from ALDI, and the merits of one Will Arnett. This might just be one of my favorite episodes yet, and I know you're going to love it too. Let's get to it! MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Tattoos on the Heart by Gregory Boyle The Hole in Our Gospel by Richard Stearns (this one is just $1.99 on Kindle) Never Change by Elizabeth Berg Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist (and also Bittersweet) Interrupted by Jen Hatmaker Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson (this is the young adult adaptation I read) How the Word is Passed by Clint Smith Harry Potter & the Sorceror's Stone by J.K. Rowling (free on Kindle, FYI) Abuelita Faith by Kat Armas Believing God by Beth Moore For a full list of the books that have changed my life (so far), click here. ALSO MENTIONED: The Ministry of Ordinary Places by Shannan Martin The Very Good Gospel by Lisa Sharon Harper Dear White Peacemakers by Osheta Moore Jesus & John Wayne by Kristin Kobes Du Mez The Color of Compromise by Jemar Tisby NOT-SO-GUILTY PLEASURES: Family Reunion (Netflix series) Spinach artichoke tzatziki dip from ALDI Seasonal banners on my mantel DON'T FORGET: Join The Couch on Facebook! Shannan had it all: dream home, comfortable paycheck, & a tight-knit Christian community, but God challenged her to exchange it all for something more abundant. Her family moved to "the wrong side of the tracks." She's learning everyday what it means to love your neighbor. Tune in to hear about re-defining the American Dream & how learning to love people who are different than us might completely change our views. “This is not something we can agree to disagree on.” 2020 has certainly been a year of political discourse and often-times heated conversations with our friends and family members. There are a lot of topics that we don't all see eye to eye on, but we can't always settle on agreeing to disagree if the topic has a direct impact on our own family. That's what I learned from Lindsay as we continued the conversation on interracial adoption and foster care today on the show. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) While foster care and adoption are beautiful experiences, there are obviously plenty of complications and messy experiences that come along for the ride. Lindsay is never hesitant to be open and honest about those, and it's something I appreciate so much about her because it has given me a much more realistic picture of what diving into the world of orphan care looks like! Whether you're interested in parenting through one of these methods or not, you're going to learn lot today. Lindsay will teach us about what it truly looks like to care for the marginalized and the vulnerable and those in need. This is something that I personally think her and her husband, Gabe, do a wonderful job at - you could say they put their money where their mouths are in this way. In Part 1, Lindsay and I chatted about the special story of how their most newly adopted son, Leo, joined their family and the decision process that led them to pursuing a private, domestic adoption. Today, Lindsay and I are picking up where we left off and chatting about what she has learned surrounding parenting children of different races than her own. We talked about this back on the first episode we recorded in 2018, but her kiddos were just toddlers then and so I wanted to know what it's like now with older kids and with the influence of all the events that have taken place in 2020. We also talk about what it's like for Lindsay to look back on the foster care experiences she shared about in that original episode - if she still feels the same way and if her and Gabe would consider doing foster care again in the future. This conversation isn't just for parents - you're going to get something out of it no matter where you sit in life. I'm honored to carry Lindsay's story and to share it with all of you, and I'm even more honored to be the exclusive podcast featuring the one and only Lindsay!
