As in each episode in the series, this one is descriptive not prescriptive in that I'll model my own discernment on these issues with scripture, contemplation and prayer but I'll never direct your grown-up Catholic choice as that's between you and the Lord! Get ready for some Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood vibes! You may know that you're supposed to "love your neighbor", but so many of us don't even know our neighbor's name. And most of us have friends, but somewhere along the line, we forget how to make friends. We are only forced to remember again when we find ourselves in a season where we "start over". Shannan Martin is a wife, mom, author, and a neighbor. She knows all about having to move and start over, not knowing anyone at first. The Lord took her on a journey, though, of learning how simple it can be to love your neighbor and she teaches us how to become connected in a very disconnected world. We talk about: - how to embrace and ease the awkwardness of meeting new people around us - how to prevent isolation in the post-grad era - how the vulnerability of putting yourself out there can bless and benefit others way more than it could embarrass you If you find yourself in an unfamiliar setting, this episode will save your life! When was the last time you reached out to one of your neighbors? Not just the people you feel comfortable with, but the ones who live near that you might not know beyond a “How are you?” in passing. As we continue our Community and Friendship series, we're taking a look at why it enriches our lives (and the lives of our neighbors) to invest in the people around us. It doesn't have to mean they all become our best friends, but a little curiosity, a little paying attention, and a little effort to listen will go a long way in developing the kinds of relationships that make life sweeter. To help guide this conversation, we're delighted to welcome author and speaker Shannan Martin back to the show!  Through her writing, Shannan has revolutionized the way we think about relationships with her refreshing perspectives. She articulates the need for genuine, deep-seated friendships that stretch beyond conventional norms. She also unravels the complexities of forging meaningful connections in our modern world, and her last book “Start with Hello” beckons us toward extending hospitality in ways that might feel awkward at first, but will net us that sense of community and belonging we all long for.  Shannan and Jen discuss:  How Shannan, a self proclaimed introvert, faced her loneliness after she and her family moved from the country to the city by getting outside her comfort zone and making herself available to meet her neighbors What it means to be deeply embedded in a neighborhood where you are both a good neighbor, and your neighbors are good neighbors to you How making new friends, no matter how big or small, always starts with a simple “hello”  and the small steps towards getting to know someone by making eye contact, paying attention and helping when we can Shannan and Jen agree that when we reach out beyond our fears, beyond our comfort level, and beyond our borders with radical hospitality, good things start to happen in our neighborhoods which then trickle out to our communities and begin to affect society as a whole. And, be sure to stay with us ‘til the very end–you won't want to miss a little bonus chat among friends about whether ice cream is healthy for you or not, and what flavors Jen and Shannan swear by. * * * Thank you to our sponsors!  BetterHelp | Visit betterhelp.com/forthelove to save 10% on your first month! Hospitality can be defined in so many different ways which makes it a very broad topic, but author Shannan Martin joins me today to talk about it and what it means to be a good neighbor. Her book Start with Hello covers how to create a sense of community with our neighbors, even if we are introverted. Shannan argues that we are all hungry for community even if we don't quite realize it, and she offers great advice on how to start creating that sense of community. Shannan offers ways to carve out space in our lives to create connections. I, for example, try to keep Fridays open for social gatherings, and Shannan offers examples from her own life as well. She defines hospitality as the door being easy on its hinges and explains what she means by that. Shannan also reveals what her favorite simple step is to build connection, and I really appreciate what Shannan is doing and really appreciate her time. Today I talk to author Shannan Martin, who wrote the book Start with Hello (And Other Simple Ways to Live as Neighbors) In this practical, compelling book, author Shannan Martin shares simple practices for living as a more open-hearted, empathetic neighbor who sees past what divides us, looks for common ground, and is rewarded with vibrant and enduring connection.   There are so many ways, both intentionally and unintentionally, we wall ourselves off from one another, yet we are truly better, healthier, and happier together. The good news is authentic connection can be found. Martin shares how to: Believe in the possibility of healthier, sturdier, more unified communities and be committed to the collective health of those at the sidelines. Trade feelings of loneliness, isolation, and disconnection for the security and camaraderie of living in connection with the people near them. Engage simple, accessible practices for living as a more open- hearted, empathetic neighbor. See past the headlines of division and become more curious about our shared humanity. Be equipped for the small, slow work of repair within a culture that often seems to have given up and experience the brighter life that comes through the persistent practice of solidarity.   This episode is so good!   Get Shannan's new book: Get to know Shannan on Instagram: Check out Shannan's website:

If you have been listening to my show for a while now, you may be familiar with today's guest. Shannan Martin joined me back in 2015 on Episode #45 to share about her family's life and mission. Today we talk about a number of things, including the practice of waking up and how Shannan defines ‘neighbor,' plus systematic injustice and the black squares that everyone posted on social media in 2020. Shannan is the author of The Ministry of Ordinary Places, Falling Tree, and her newest book, Start With Hello, which releases October 11. Connecting with neighbors in intentional ways is something that screams “Shannan and Corey Martin.” Shannan says Start With Hello started in her family's neighborhood as she found her heart gravitating toward connecting with the people around her, especially people who don't look like her. Shannan says her calling is to live as a neighbor, which she defines as anyone who her life intersects with. Everything she knows about living as a neighbor she said she learned from her neighbors. We can love our neighbors like Shannan by being intentional, starting with hello. Connect with JamieFacebook //  Instagram // YouTubeGET ALL THE LINKS FROM THE SHOW HERE
