With beer. And hookers.

Ook diverse Nederlanders zoals o.a. Deel 3

Sagt dir der Name Roy Bates was, Lino?" On this day in 1967, Paddy Roy Bates, a former British Army major turned pirate radio broadcaster, declared that the abandoned naval base he'd been occupying for the past 9 months was now a sovereign micronation: The Principality of Sealand.
When, in 1967, self-made millionaire named Paddy Roy Bates inaugurated himself ruler of the Principality of Sealand, a tiny dominion of the high seas, he began the extremely strange, completely true story of Sealand, an indefatigable micronation located on a World War II anti-aircraft gun platform off of the British coast. Dylan Taylor-Lehman’s book “Sealand: The True Story of the World’s Most Stubborn Micronation and Its Eccentric Royal Family” describes how this rogue adventurer seized the disused Maunsell Sea Fort from pirate radio broadcasters, settled his family there and defended their tiny kingdom from UK government officials and armed mercenaries for half a century. Join us for a discussion of the Bates family’s outrageous attempt to build a sovereign kingdom on an isolated platform in shark-infested waters in this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large on WBAI.
In 1967, a retired army major and self-made millionaire named Paddy Roy Bates cemented his family's place in history when he inaugurated himself ruler of the Principality of Sealand, a tiny dominion of the high seas. And so began the peculiar story of the world's most stubborn micronation on a World War II anti-aircraft gun platform off the British coast.Today’s guest, Dylan Taylor-Lehman tells us the story of Sealand, a raucous tale of how a rogue adventurer seized the disused Maunsell Sea Fort from pirate radio broadcasters, settled his eccentric family on it, and defended their tiny kingdom from UK government officials and armed mercenaries for half a century. There were battles and schemes as Roy and his crew engaged with diplomats, entertained purveyors of pirate radio and TV, and even thwarted an attempted coup that saw the Prince Regent taken hostage. Incredibly, more than fifty years later, the self-proclaimed independent nation still stands--replete with its own constitution, national flag and anthem, currency, and passports. But Sealand is more than a quirky story. It hearkens back to the conquistadors who wanted to carve out their own sovereign nations and looks to the future of libertarian billionaires who want to build their own floating micronation of their own.
An abandoned WWII gun tower in the middle of the ocean became so much more - a base for pirate radio, the scene of many violent battles... and a country. 7 miles off the Essex coast here in the UK lies a micronation called Sealand. The abandoned World War 2 gun platform formally knows as Fort Rough was occupied by a maverick genius called Paddy Roy Bates. The history of this "nation" is fascinating....from shooting at military vessels, declaring independence and the royal family of Sealand halting mercenary coup attempt. Never a dull moment. In 1966 Paddy Roy Bates and his family took to an old army fort in the middle of the North Sea, and the next year decided to declare it as a nation, called the Principality of Sealand. This is a challenge for Matt who constantly mixes it up with Seaworld, however this has nothing to do with the marine parks and instead Sealand has a history you won’t believe. Whilst discussing Sealand’s bizarre history Matt also has a personal connection to a member of Sealand’s football team. And we finish by looking into becoming a lord and lady of Sealand. Midlife crises mean different things to different people, but to supreme weirdo Paddy Roy Bates, it meant taking over a sea fort in the middle of the English Channel and calling it a country. In this episode of Dented Dimension, we meet the founder of the world's first micronation, The Principality of Sealand... and attack it with Andy Johnson in a helicopter. Amen. And RIP Paddy Roy Bates, wherever you are. Featuring: Andy Johnson and Sonny Mishra @ Divine Droid Records: http://www.divinedroidrecords.com/

Its mass consists of what was HM Fort Roughs, a former Second World War Maunsell Sea Fort, off the coast of Suffolk, England, United Kingdom.[1][9] While it has been described as the world's smallest country,[10] or the world's smallest nation,[11] Sealand is not recognised by any established sovereign state, although Sealand's government claims it has been de facto recognised by the United Kingdom (after an English court ruled it did not have jurisdiction over Sealand as territorial water limitations were defined at the time)[1] and Germany (see below). Since 1967 the facility has been occupied by family and associates of Paddy Roy Bates, who claim that it is an independent sovereign state.[1] Bates seized it from a group of pirate radio broadcasters in 1967 with the intention of setting up his own station at the site.[12] He attempted to establish Sealand as a nation-state in 1975 with the writing of a national constitution and establishment of other national symbols.[1] Bates moved to mainland Essex when he became elderly, naming his son Michael regent. Bates died in October 2012 at the age of 91.[13] One of the other platforms which guarded a port Sealand PALM ISLAND Beginning in 2001, three man-made islands in the form of palm trees are being constructed off the coast of the Emirate of Dubai. The islands consist of Palm Jumeirah, the smallest island, Jebel Ali, and Palm Deira, the largest island.
