Join us as we dig into the Roddenberry archives and discuss how Gene's early writing shaped the groundbreaking worlds he would later bring to our screens. Welcome to Gene-ology, where we explore the earliest TV writing works of Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek! We're in the midst of 1856. This is the year lung sickness took hold of the country, and it's effect was to push some people of the land over the edge. Nongqawuse living in Gxarha had prophesized about salvation which was at hand. The former Anglican now born-again Xhosa Mhlakaza had thrown himself into the messianic messaging business. You heard last episode about the causes of the Xhosa Cattle Killing, now we're going to deal with how it spread. The amaXhosa were not alone. Around the world, frontier battles had lit up the globe, the pressure of these new arrivals on indigenous people had burst into flames. In Seattle, U.S. Marines had been dispatched by ship in January 1856 to suppress a Native American uprising. The First People's were resisting pressure to cede land - they were being herded into reservations and opposed the plan. Just to set the tone, a few days before the attack on Seattle, Washington Governor Isaac Stevens had declared a "war of extermination" upon the Native American Indians. Seattle was a small, four-year-old settlement in the Washington Territory that had recently named itself after Chief Seattle - a leader of the Suquamish and Duwamish peoples of central Puget Sound. In Utah, the Tintic war had broken out in the same month between the Mormons and Ute people - it ended when the Federal Government took the Ute's land but intermittent clashes and tension continued. This went on all the way to the Second World War in the twentieth century, with the Ute's demanding compensation. In India, the Nawab of Oudh, Wajid Ali Shah, was exiled to Metiabruz and his state was annexed by the British East India Company. Following our story about Surveyors in South Africa, it is interesting to note that in March 1856 The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India officially gave 'Peak XV' the height of 29 thousand and 2 feet. We know Peak XV now as Mount Everest and its actually 29 000 and 31 feet. Also in March 1856, the Great Powers signed the Treaty of Paris, ending the Crimean War. Soon thousands of British German Legion veterans of the Crimean war would arrive in South Africa. In May 1856, Queen Victoria handed Norfolk Island to the people of Pitcairn Island — famous for being descendents of the Mutiny on the Bounty. The Pitcairners land on Norfolk Island promptly extend their Pitcairn social revolution idea - to continue with women's suffrage. David Livingstone arrived in Quelimane on the Indian Ocean having taken two years to travel from Luanda in Angola on the Atlantic Ocean across Africa. And in South Africa, since April, amaXhosa had been killing their cattle upon hearing of the Prophet Nongqwase of Gxarha, whose pronouncements were now being managed by Mhlakaza her uncle. King Sarhili had visited the mysterious River and pronounced his support for her visions which spoke of salvation through cleansing of goods and cattle. Killing cattle and throwing away goods, she warned of witchcraft destroying the Xhosa, she had been spoken to by two men in a bush. Nongqawuse and her little ally, Nombanda, were visited by Xhosa from far and wide to hear her story directly. The most privileged visitors were taken to the River and the Ocean, but most of these men and women heard nothing - no voices although Nongqawuse continued to relay the two stranger's messages to those present. A minority began to claim they heard the voices. Rumours of the happenings spread like wild fire and the official sanction of King Sarhili Ka-Hintsa of the amaGcaleka removed the last doubts from many who desperately wanted this prophecy to have power. And yet most of the amaXhosa chiefs intitially opposed the prophecies, but were ground down mentally, dragged into the worse form of cattle killing by the commoners. The believers began the comprehensive work of destruction. This back and forth went on until what is known as the First Disappointment.

Opieka medyczna należy do usług kluczowych.

The Homeopathy Health Show welcomes Dr. Christina Chambreau to the show to talk about her work as a Homeopathic Veterinarian, author and teacher. Dr. Chambreau is an internationally known homeopathic veterinarian, lecturer and author. She graduated from the University of Georgia Veterinary College in 1980. Several years later a client told her about homeopathy and a local veterinarian sent her bottles of Cantharis and Urtica from the Washington Pharmacy for “bladder problems.” Months later a cat with cystitis came into the practice and was able to stop taking antibiotics for the first time in 3 years after taking one or both of “this stuff that might help your cat”. Very interested, Christina attended a class at the National Center for Homeopathy Summer School taught by George MacLeod and began using homeopathy in her veterinary practice. Her successes (those initial miracles that keep us studying homeopathy) encouraged her to take a second class the next year with Dr. MacLeod and began Dr. Paul Herscu's yearlong training program. By then, Dr. Pitcairn was offering annual weekend classes on homeopathy for animals which she religiously attended. Since 1988 she has used primarily homeopathy in her practice and began teaching. She is a co-founder of the Academy Of Veterinary Homeopathy, was on the faculty of the National Center for Homeopathy Summer School teaching repertory and animal classes, was an adjunct faculty at the Maryland Veterinary Technician Program and is on the faculty of the Holistic Actions for animal health which is based on homeopathic principles. She teaches courses on homeopathy and holistic health virtually and around the world to lay and veterinary students. Her commitment is to de-mystify homeopathy, to show how healing of all types follows the principles of the Organon and to have people realize the power (for good and bad) of remedies, and how this approach helps our environment. Using the principles of homeopathy, she shows how to experiment with the myriad healing modalities available and evaluate their results properly. Writing the Healthy Animal's Journal (and now the dog and cat ebooks, soon the horse journal, too) was needed so people could easily track the symptoms and essence of their animals to be able to evaluate the direction of response to any treatments. She is very practical and eschews “Do this because it worked for me…” suggestions, rather teaches the underlying principles whenever possible. She also wrote the kindle book – Fleas Be Gone: A holistic veterinarians guide to natural flea control. She is co-author of the Homeopathic Repertory: A Tutorial (Karen Allen) and How To Have A Stress Free Wedding (Mort Orman). Be inspired and join the conversation. You know how everyone's heard of Everest and the Mariana Trench, right? But there are these other spots that are like, next-level remote. Like Tristan da Cunha, for starters - it's in the middle of nowhere in the South Atlantic, good luck getting there without a serious boat. Then there's the Sahara Desert, I mean, it's massive and seriously harsh, not exactly a walk in the park. And let's not forget about Veryovkina Cave, tucked away in the Caucasus Mountains, it's the deepest cave on the planet. Getting to these places? It's like playing an extreme version of hide and seek, except the hiding spots are seriously hardcore.
Simon Young is the first non-native mayor of Pitcairn. Originally from Yorkshire in the UK, Simon visited Pitcairn in 1992 and liked it so much he returned permanently in 1999 with his wife Shirley. Simon was elected mayor in 2022, becoming the first non-native to head the island's government. Pitcairn is home to fifty people, distant relatives of the mutinous crewmates of the HMS Bounty.
Rick Pitcairn, chief global strategist at Pitcairn, says that while the markets have been dominated by monetary policy for the last decade or more, the next 20 years will see fiscal policy will be equally or more important because of how the government borrows money and what it needs to take on in new debts to keep rolling. Pitcairn acknowledges that the current dysfunction in Washington worries him about how policies will be set and the potential fallout from gridlock. In the Market Call, Dan Kim, senior investment analyst at Saturna Capital -- co-manager of the Sextant International fund -- talks about the international opportunities available now, plus Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi turns to a long-time traditional fund manager making a recent move into exchange-traded funds for his ETF of the Week.
In the second episode of the Dakota Fundraising News Podcast, Pat and Konch provide an update on the Mariner acquisition of AndCo and Fourth Street Performance Partners, a deal setting new precedents in the consulting world. The episode also explores an array of impactful job transitions, including high-profile moves within Pitcairn, Seven Valleys, and NEPC, alongside a brief update on Citi group's major workforce reduction. In the realm of RIA/FA M&A, the spotlight shines on OneDigital's acquisition of WealthSource Partners and the aggressive expansion strategies of Rockefeller and UBS. Institutional coverage closes the episode as Mass PRIM's ambitious investment goals are unveiled, alongside updates on private debt strategies and fixed income searches. Don't miss insights on recent private equity investments and emerging manager moves, culminating with the latest fund launches and Dakota Cocktail events. Tune in to navigate the intricate dynamics of institutional consulting, investment strategies, and the evolving landscape of fundraising news.
In 1808, an American merchant ship happened upon an uncharted island in the South Pacific and unwittingly solved the biggest nautical mystery of the era: the whereabouts of a band of fugitives who, after seizing their vessel, had disappeared into the night with their Tahitian companions. Seven generations later, the island is still inhabited by descendants of the original mutineers, marooned like modern castaways. In 2018, Brandon Presser went to live among its families; two clans bound by circumstance and secrets. There, he pieced together Pitcairn's full story: an operatic saga that holds all visitors in its mortal clutch – even the author. Told through vivid historical and personal narrative, The Far Land: 200 Years of Murder, Mania and Mutiny in the South Pacific (Icon Books, 2022) goes beyond the infamous mutiny on the Bounty, offering an unprecedented glimpse at life on the fringes of civilization, and how, perhaps, it's not so different from our own. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. What do you do on your downtime at work? Mallory discovers teensy weensy islands in the South Pacific. Tonight, Mallory tells us about one of those islands, specifically Pitcairn Island. It has a population of less than 50 people and by all accounts the people seem happy and friendly. The island is beautiful and the people of Pitcairn are eager to grow their population and become completely self sufficient. But the population is dwindling. Not because of how isolated they are, but because of a horrible history full of disgusting secrets. (Trigger warning: sexual abuse) Then Ashley dives deep into the world of reality TV. Specifically the story of Tomoaki Hamatsu (or Nasubi - his stage name). In 1998, Nasubi, a 22 year old aspiring comedian auditioned for a mysterious reality show. As luck would have it, he would be the star! But little did he know, he would be isolated, starved, and manipulated for over a year. The show was a hit - which leads us to the question - what does this say about us as a species?

Yorkshire born actor, Samuel Edward-Cook made his screen debut in the BBC One series LAND GIRLS, before landing the role of Danny Whizz-Bang in the highly acclaimed and BAFTA award-winning crime drama PEAKY BLINDERS alongside Cillian Murphy, Joe Cole and Helen McCrory. Other television credits include the ITV miniseries BRIEF ENCOUNTERS, the ITV anthology series INNOCENT, the long-running BBC series SILENT WITNESS, and the Channel 4 comedy-drama PURE. Samuel will soon appear playing Ceri Davies in BETTER, a BBC series by Sister Pictures, the production company behind THIS IS GOING TO HURT, CHERNOBYL and GANGS OF LONDON, among many others. The crime drama follows a corrupt police detective who undergoes a major moral awakening and makes amends of her wrongdoings of the past. The series will also star Leila Farzad (I HATE SUZIE), Andrew Buchan and Anton lesser. Also in 2023, Samuel will play Isaac Hartley in Shane Meadows' highly anticipated BBC drama THE GALLOWS POLE, based on the novel of the same name by Benjamin Myers. Loosely based on true events, the six-part series set in 18th century Yorkshire will recount the rise and fall of David Hartley and the Crag Vale Coiners. The series will also star Michael Socha (PAPILLON), George Mackay (1917), Thomas Turgoose (THIS IS ENGLAND), Tom Burke (THE SOUVENIR) and Sophie McShera (DOWNTON ABBEY). As well as his screen credits, Samuel has numerous theatre credits, including BOYS for Headlong, directed by Robert Icke, Matthew Quintal in Richard Bean's PITCAIRN directed by Max Stafford-Clark, TITUS ANDRONICUS at Shakespeare's Globe, Edmund in Lucy Bailey's contemporary adaptation of KING LEAR, staring David Haigh and portraying Captain Wentworth in the Royal Exchange Theatre production of PERSUASION. His performance as Haimon in Ivo van Hove's production of ANTIGONE alongside Juliette Binoche attracted rave reviews, with theatre critic Stephen Collins praising his “passion” and "extraordinary range of emotions”. The play itself was described as “undeniably impressive” by The Independent and as a "production that combines a sombre aesthetic beauty with a sense of the ambivalence at the heart of Sophocles's play” by The Guardian.
In this episode, Gem Fletcher speaks to photographer and artist Rhiannon Adam. Her work is heavily influenced by her nomadic childhood spent at sea, sailing around the world with her parents. Little photographic evidence of this period in her life exists, igniting an interest in the influence of photography on recall, the notion of the photograph as a physical object, and the image as an intersection between fact and fiction – themes that continue throughout her work. In 2015, supported by the BBC/Royal Geographical Society, Adam travelled to the remote island community of Pitcairn in the South Pacific. Pitcairn measures just two miles by one mile and is home to just 42 British subjects, descendants from the Mutiny on the Bounty. A decade ago, the island's romantic image was tarnished by a string of high profile sexual abuse trials. As a result, islanders are particularly reticent about accepting outsiders. With trip duration dictated by the quarterly supply vessel, there would be no way off for three arduous months. Adam's project is the first in-depth photographic project to take place on the island, and made its debut at Francesca Maffeo Gallery in Spring 2018. The project won the Meitar Award for Excellence in Photography in 2020. The resulting book, Big Fence / Pitcairn Island (Blow Up Press), was formally released in April 2022 on the anniversary of the Bounty Mutiny and appeared in the final 10 titles selected for the Photography Book Award at the 2022 Kraszna Krausz Foundation book awards. In the show, we have a roving conversation about how projects unravel, creative intentions, working in discomfort, and the challenges of working within a broken system, VIA conversations about bookmaking, multifaceted careers, beauty, and going to space - which Rhiannon actually is doing with Space X and Dear Moon. But at the heart of it are some interesting ideas about what photography is and can do.
