Segment 2, June 17th, 2023 What's the difference in a podiatrist & a pedorthist?  It's a question that many of us don't know the answer.  However, this segment helps clear this up as Kev Martin from Adrenaline Sports Marketing, rejoins the Carolina Outdoors. A podiatrist is a doctor that specializes in treating foot and ankle issues and problems.  Pedorthist are trained specialists that creates or modifies shoes, socks, and orthotics that aid in recovery from foot issues and problems.  Currently, Martin has worked in the footwear industry for the past thirty years.  He spent time as a certified pedorthist & continues his career representing, counseling & advising in the category. He talks about the fashion, function, support, & protection that makes up the industry.  But what are people looking for?  Martin says that they are looking for the ability to be more connected with lateral movement & the 100 moving parts within the foot (28 bones, 30 joints, & muscle ligaments, & tendons that make up the foot). So is fitting a science & art.  Kev Martin aptly answers this question.  Recognizing the measuring of foot & the feel of the shoe are what happens between a "sit & fit" store like Jesse Brown's.  Don't buy footwear by the numbers.  Respect what your feet feel because from the foundation of the shoe affects your ankles, knees, hips, & back.  We learn about the bones in the foot (there isn't one called the arch bone) & what happens with plantar fascia. Kev speaks to the recognition of getting back to basics.  One of the largest outsole manufacturers in the world, Vibram, has a brand called Five Fingers that brings footwear back to minimalism.  It garners more connectivity & strengthens the muscles & tendons in the foot.  It and another Vibram brand, Furoshiki, have had success in minimalistic footwear. Thank you to Kev Martin from Adrenaline Sports Marketing for joining us on the Carolina Outdoors.

And while there is no shortage of orthotics manufacturers, there is a great lack of understanding of the medical necessity of orthotics and their clinical use.Although many companies market orthotics to healthcare practitioners, there exists a great lack of understanding of medical necessity and their clinical use in rehabilitation. Dr. David Wedemeyer is on a mission to change that.In Part 2 of this two part training, we will dispel some common myths surrounding the subject of orthotics prescription and learn about the appropriate usage and benefit of orthotics in clinical practice.Today, we will learn the differences between a 3D volumetric cast and 2D methods and how they impact the finished orthotic device. We will also learn about the marketing and myths that entice doctors to buy generic brands. Buyer Beware! Not all "custom orthotics" are what they seem.ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:Dr. David Wedemeyer is a chiropractor and certified pedorthist located in Laguna Niguel, California. A native of Newport Beach, he pursued a chiropractic degree at Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles and returned to Orange County to open his practice. As we all know, the orthotic industry is somewhat dirty and custom doesn't always mean custom. We had the opportunity to tour Shawn Eno's lab in Idaho Springs, Colorado, and let me tell you, these things are custom! Shawn Eno has built Brett Winchester's orthotics for the last 15-plus years and is a true artist. The thing that really separates Shawn's orthotics is the communication with the ordering physician. Shawn really wants it to be a collaborative process and expects things like a gait evaluation, static and dynamic posturing of the foot and ankle, and also other MSK issues up the chain. We dove deep into casting, the differences in posting, and when and where orthotics give you the biggest bang for your buck. This is a perfect extension of our conversations with Dr. Tom Michaud and for all of the foot nerds out there! Enjoy! What is the difference between carbon fiber insoles like VKTRY and carbon fiber shoes? What are the benefits of carbon fiber insoles? Are there certain running related injuries that may respond best to carbon fiber insoles. Can these help plantar fasciitis, achilles tendon pain, and 1st toe joint arthritis? Is there an arch type that responds best to carbon fiber insoles?    Can carbon fiber insoles be used for road running and trail running? Dr Colin Dombroski has a PhD in Health & Rehabilitation Science and has spent the last 20 years loving every day as a Canadian Certified Pedorthist. His research has helped him understand patients can receive positive results from many different types of orthotics; there is no one right way.   He has treated everyone from Bad Ass Olympians to Octogenarians with arthritis, and he uses his experience as a researcher, speaker and writer to help them back to their feet. In this episode, we discuss: Why he chose to become a pedorthist and not a podiatrist. Why do we see irregular feet with zero problems and so-called normal feet with multiple problems? Making different orthotics yet getting positive results.  Orthotic adjustments and patient psychology.  We should be questioning what we are doing. Finding the WHO’s to allow you to do the HOWs - you don't have to be the leader in your business.  Different casting modalities and the results from research - it's not the modality; it's what you do with it that counts most.   Big Tip: Be open to the idea of adjusting your orthotics as much as your patient needs them adjusted.  "Half of everything we’re going to be taught in school will be proven to be wrong in ten years.
